Comics Shipping 11/24 (+ a smidge more)

admin

Being sick, alone, wouldn’t have prevented reviews… but OF COURSE Diamond picks this month to deliver the PREVIEWS blackline THREE days late, so thoroughly bottlenecking the production of ONOMATOPOEIA, I’m STILL working on it at 9:30 at night, so I can print the damn thing tomorrow…. Anyway, Thanksgiving is coming, and just in case you thought it might, it isn’t going to interfere with comics delivery at all. In fact, none of the rest of the holidays seasons do — business as usual all Wednesdays. Comix Experience will, however, be closed on Thursday, Thanksgiving day, so don’t plan on seeing us then… After the New Years, I swear, I will be more dilignat about regular updating of the site. Really!…  Read More…

Bumblefuck!

Sickness reigns in the Hibbs/Friedman household. Benny got it on Tuesday, Tzipora on Wednesday, and on Thursday night I came down with the stomach flu, with nasty things flying out of my orifices at very high velocities. I’m strong enough to type a bit today, but the reviews will be delayed for a little bit until all of my muscles start working properly again… If you haven;t already seen it, or followed alink from Grim or Tom, the new TILTING AT WINDMILLS is up on Newsarama — http://www.newsarama.com/pages/Tilting/Tilting11.htm -B

The "reviews" for 11/10

admin

Not a lot of time this week (got to get the new Tilting written, and Garth Ennis came to town and so I kinda blew a day this week recovering), so a quick in-and-out on some notable books: ANGELTOWN #1: New Vertigo crime mini. Likable (enough) characters, nice art, strong plot and decent scripting. This won’t be a classic (or, really, I suspect, TPed), but solid enough and worth a GOOD. AVENGERS FINALE #1: I was liking it fine until we got to the double-page spreads, whereupon I started intensely disliking it. There’s a few pretty weird choices in here (Especially Jarvis’ “The BEST time of the Avengers? Oh, that’s easy – when the Wrecker beat me nearly to death…  Read More…

Some comics from 11/3

admin

Comment with Haloscan, will you — we know (from hits) that people are reading this, but it’s kinda enthusiasm-draining when you write a long post, and you see “COmments: 0″ at the bottom! ASTONISHING X-MEN #6: We open the week’s listings with, hooray, the PICK OF THE WEEK, getting that out of the way nice and easy. This is one of those books I don’t even actually want to say anything about, because it’s probably better that you get surprised, but there’s no doubt this is top-flight a#1 comics that are clever, fun, thought-provoking, intelligent, addative, and passionate. And you can’t ask for more than that, can you? My only quibble: the thingy that Whedon introduces here is almost TOO…  Read More…

Kibbles and Bits

Probably the last time you’ll ever see a political commentary on this blog, but is anyone REALLY surprised that Bush won? I mean, look, Kerry wasn’t running on anything other than being NotBush. NotBush is a nice position, to be sure, for some percentage of the country, but it’s not a way to win. The Democrats have to get thier shit together — that’s two elections in a row they’ve run a wonkish stiff who is defined by his opponent. Bush really should have been the most defeatable candidate ever, but the Demos blew it by running yet another woodman. Or to put it another way, Kerry won here in San Francisco, like 85%/15%…. and I don’t know a single…  Read More…

A Quick Sqwuack from the Parrot!

Jeff here, and I just wanted to second Brian’s comments about all the great book picks generally, and the Marvel Visionaries Jack Kirby hardcover in particular. I imagine all you Kirby lovers went and got this already but if not–holy cow. You get close to 350 pages of prime Kirby work for only $29.99, and it’s a pretty great sampler: I’m particularly happy about issue #7 of The Eternals with all its crazy design work, and having the Galactus Saga in one place on great paper for less than fifty bucks seems like a bargain all its own. If I try, I can fret about royalties, the way the book is weighted with stories about Jack’s happy days in the…  Read More…

Because I just finished doing the order form, here is the top 50, by quantity, that Comix Experience ordered for December 2004. Rememebr, not all of these things may ship in December. Not all of these things will make to the store in these quantities (Marvel’s, in particular, can have thier orders cut, potentially) Yadda yadda. 1 ASTONISHING X-MEN #8 2 ULTIMATES 2 #1 3 IDENTITY CRISIS #7 4 SUPERMAN BATMAN #15 5 SUPERMAN BATMAN #16 6 ASTRO CITY THE DARK AGE #1 7 GREEN LANTERN REBIRTH #3 8 NEW AVENGERS #2 9 SUPREME POWER #14 10 JLA CLASSIFIED #2 11 ULTIMATE SECRET #1 12 SUPERMAN #212 13 OCEAN #3 14 ULTIMATE NIGHTMARE #5 15 ULTIMATE FANTASTIC FOUR #14 16…  Read More…

Comics from 10/27

admin

Been a busy week around here — The Geoff Johns signing on Saturday (Thanks for coming, Geoff — you are a gracious and garralous man, and everyone who showed had a wonderful time), then Ben’s first Halloween on Sunday (well, OK, his second — but he was barely a lump for #1), and the order form is due tomorrow, but I have to get it done today because tomorrow we have to process the new comics… So, I still haven’t read a lot of last week’s comics yet! But I’ve read some, and there’s a few things I definitely want to say, so let’s get to what I do have…. Actually, first up, not a comic, but this week’s ENTERPRISE….  Read More…

Happy Birthday, Jeff Lester!

The title of the post says it all: Happy birthday to Jeff Lester, and may you have another fifty, at least. Happy Halloween to everyone else. Comics criticism will be back tomorrow, I promise… -B
