Comix Experience 2011 Best Sellers: Comics

Brian Hibbs

New Year, so how’d the last one do? Let’s Find out!

So, here’s the list sorted by QUANTITY SOLD.

Yes, comics for 25 cents outsell anything, by a factor of about 10x. Hardly a surprise, I’m sure, though worth noting that I couldn’t possibly survive with that as my business model.

Straight-up for a buck comes next, and the generic “back issue”…  Back issues, generically, sold about 50% more units than the best-selling comic.

After that, pretty much a straight-up rout for the DC New 52, with 31 of them placing in the Top 100, yow. Marvel places only a single book in the Top 20. Double yow.

Either way, this was very much DC’s year for comical books — Marvel is is deep trouble here.

Any trends you see, worth commenting on?

  1. In the span of ten issues – 81 to 91 – “Walking Dead” went from 96th to 41st to 86th. Is this a matter of a couple dozen issues one way or the other? Or did the TV show pump it up huge, and then lose it just the same? (Though I guess we need to look at the correlated Trade sales there as well.)

And with “Fear Itself” being Marvel’s only horse in the race, I fear (ahem) that the lesson learned will be “If you are going to do a line wide event, commit fully and involve the entire line”. So long “WWH:X-MEN”, say hello to your completely new 2012 Marvel. And 2013. And…

  2. David, Walking Dead (the comic) sells in a wave pattern — There are “jump on to the comic now” points at every sixth issue as people who bought all 15 TPs in a 2 week period get desperate for their next fix, and decide to start in on periodical version. But of course, not ALL of those stick around, and so it flows back out again… until the next trade is released. Thus far, the last 2-3 years, each wave leaves the “base” number a little higher.

  3. Considering that we are at a hundred issues and people are still joing, how much do you think it has to do with having all the TPBs in print and available? (Relative to the quality of the work, just to have a metric.)

  4. Is there a valid number above 100 percent?

  5. I wish every store had sold as much of Xombi as you had. I feel like you were probably selling like 1% of the print run by issue six.

  6. Something like a half of one percent, at least.

If XOMBI had been a New52 book, though…?

  7. What’s “Starter Set”?

  8. Why is Marvel in trouble? Statements from Marvel, and anecdotal evidence from other retailers, seemed to suggest the “rising tide” theory that while DC was outselling Marvel, Marvel’s books were still selling better or at least the same numbers as before the 52 hit. Is this not your experience as well?

  9. Brian: a block of themed comics, packaged together for a lower price — ex “25 comics starring women” or “Avengers #1-12″ or “15 different Elseworlds Annuals”

Joseph: No, Marvel is gasping for breath here.
