Comix Experience Best Sellers: First half of 2014, Books

Brian Hibbs

Can I just say that I very very very much enjoy owning a comic book store with this kind of range and diversity?  For I do!
SAGA v1 is still selling, some 18 months after its initial release something very close to a copy a day.  That’s…. well, it’s kind of unprecedented, really.

Still, one game you could play at home is: “How many of these best-sellers are not actually in print at this moment?” It isn’t QUITE double digits, but it’s kind of close….

Sort it by dollars, and it changes a lot, and here you can really see what price points can do for the bottom line – clearly, you have to sell far fewer $60 books than $9.99 books to make the more money…

Meanwhile, across The City at Outpost, here is what they look like – but at the end of the day, this is just a tiny fraction of the main store…. So far.  The top is about 1/5th, while anything under #62 wouldn’t have even made the sales chart from Experience (that’s like 3 copies here, which is lower for now – but I’m building the section and selection) the top 25 are meaningful and profitable numbers, however.

It is still early over at Outpost for Book Format work (I was flatly told “Outpost can’t sell Graphic Novels” – but it is almost a quarter of business), but I’m pretty much OK with what we’ve done so far.  These numbers will climb as the stock level increases, and as people come to understand that we’re supporting the category on the south side of town.  But look: a lot of the same trends are there: smart genre comics for adults, strong kids comics, they sell at both stores.

I’m not going to do a mix chart because, frankly, Outpost’s numbers don’t change Experience’s placements by any significant amount because there’s just that much of a difference in scale.  Maybe at the year-end report?

That’s how two comic stores look to me at the moment; what do you think?

  1. That $199.99 sandman collection boggles my mind…..why would anyone pay full frate for that when you can get it 45% off online (cheapgraphicnovels.com or instocktrades.com), tax free with free shipping?. I get the artist editions. The online discount on those is almost nonexistent and for an artist edition I would want to look at one before purchasing it. Is it your clientele in san francisco used to paying $3000 for a one bedroom apartment so they don’t bat an eye at overpaying by almost $100?

  2. Thaddeus,

Maybe there are still some Americans who believe that retail businesses are worth supporting, rather than turning over the consumer economy to a network of distant warehouses and faceless data processors?

This is how “freight” is spelled.

    Brian,

I am somewhat surprised that our #1 book, LAZARUS VOL 1, is nowhere on your lists. We’ve sold 33 copies to date, which is phenomenal for us – it’s our SAGA.

    Alan

  3. […] | Brian Hibbs, owner of Comix Experience in San Francisco, breaks down the bestselling comics and graphic novels/collections for the first half of the year at that store and at Comic Outpost, by both copies and dollars sold. […]

  4. What TPB’s specifically are in your top sellers but are not currently in print?

  5. Pretty sure “frate” is “rate” in that instance.

Never correct someone’s grammar. It doesn’t fix the problem and it certainly does not endear you to the corrected individual. Basically nobody gets what they want, so don’t do it.

  6. Given that the Comics sales are so different between the two shops, any thoughts on why the Book sales are so different? Are you stocking what you already had at Experience, so of course they look the same? Are you stocking what is available, and the Publishers are losing “Comic” Book sales for you? Or are Comic sales diverse, but Book sales more similar, so Spider-Man can compete with Saga on a monthly basis, but never sell in Trades? (I see at least Batman makes a strong showing in Trades. Again, is that Marvel leaving money on the table not supporting a back list?)

  7. I would also like more of your thoughts on whether Marvel leaves money on the table by not supporting their own back list.

  8. AwesomeDude, the term is actually “full freight”.

  9. @Thaddeus: I’d actually say that $S3k studio apartments makes it harder to blow money on fripperies like comics than easier, but ymmv!

To answer, though: I would suggest that most sales of something like the slipcase in my store are impulse purchases, created because we have a dedicated Neil Gaiman boutique, well-merchandised.

I also think there are a significant number of people who actually prefer supporting local businesses who keep the money within the community.

There is NOTHING that I sell that can’t be gotten cheaper on-line — yet I still sell buckets of comics and books to hundreds of customers who are “paying too much”. That would suggest, to me, that the service we provide: the knowledge, the display, the curating, and so on, has some measure of value to these customers.

And thank god for that :)

    -B

  10. @ “AwesomeDude” — like I said, it is nearly 10% of that list. I’ll start you off with the first being: “Nowhere Men v1″

@David Oakes: We started off stocking Outpost with Experience Best Sellers, but have spread out from there… but, yes, generally Spidey can compete with Saga for comics, but much less for books.

ABSOLUTELY Marvel is leaving money on the table because they can’t keep the right products in stock at the right time…

    -B

  11. Alan Ekblaw,

Funny you should accuse me of not supporting local retail as dcbservice.com (who also own instocktrades.com by the way) has a retail store in Indiana. So I am supporting the retail market. By shopping through them I am able to buy 40% more comics than I would otherwise. The discount they give me I plow directly back into the market by trying new titles. I have a $100 limit a month I spend on comics both collected editions as well as singles. If I had to pay 3.99 a pop for each title…..yeah I would read one-half to 1/3 the books I do (this is why I have switched to marvel unlimited for marvel with there almost line wide 3.99 price and double shipping). I apologize for the spelling error, but get off your high horse. I shop at a retailer that gives me 40% off every month and I have never had a damaged book or a screwed up order. If you can’t compete thats your problem not mine…

  12. “Maybe there are still some Americans who believe that retail businesses are worth supporting.”

You can support a local retailer without blowing wads on cash on a single useless overpriced product.

Besides, nobody OWES their local retailers anything, especially if shipping companies offer better deals and quick service.

  13. It’s spelled “phull phreight,” on the streets.

  14. On the same page with Brian , at our store. We find the same thing , if not even more so, on the higher priced books. Instant gratification , the vast majority of our customers have no problem paying a bit more for their comics / trades. Sales are climbing each year , and on a side note , the Sandman Slipcase has been a monster for us , trailing only the various New 52 Batman collections

  15. Unrelated, but it looks like your 2013 Bookscan column is missing a bunch of content: http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=50992

  16. Just looking at the Experience numbers…

Wow, your entire top 10 is Image, and only one WALKING DEAD in that. That’s unexpected

DC seems to be almost all backlist and Vertigo. The only New 52 book I noticed was the BATMAN v1: COURT OF OWLS, none of their actual 2014 releases.

And business as usual for Marvel. Can’t sell CAPTAIN AMERICA or SPIDER-MAN even with movies in the theatres. X-MEN gets a few in there, at least, but not with huge numbers on the most direct tie-in to the movie.

  17. Holy shit, #9? That is great.

  18. Oh, Thaddeus, I was going to leave you alone, but then you had to post again.

If you reread my post, I didn’t “accuse” you of anything. (Yes, it could be inferred, but I didn’t state it.) You were the one passing judgment, describing a retail purchase as “overpaying.” I merely answered your (probably rhetorical) question.

To make it clear: I take offense when people on the internet suggest that my line of work be entirely eliminated. I would imagine that you might feel the same, if your profession were attacked. If that’s a “high horse,” so be it.

Like Brian, I’m not unable to compete. Electric City Comics is 32 years old and still hanging in there.

As for “Oh Well,” it is true that customers owe retailers very little, beyond whatever agreements the two parties have made. An individual’s choice to buy a product online is valid, though I question how many online companies can ship me anything faster than I can drive to Electric City (five to ten minutes, depending on traffic).

Let’s make this the last word. I’m not going to change your opinions, nor are you going to change mine.

  19. Has someone tagged Thaddeus’ posts with SPAM yet? I can’t find the button here.

  20. We call it “full frites” around here.
