  1. Looks like a final push before NYCC.

  2. AVENGING SPIDER-MAN #13–The $3.99 price is a hurdle, but I pick these up if I like the team-up. This month is, let’s see, issue #13… Hypno-Hustler! Holy shit, that presses the right buttons. I’m highly likely to get this one.

    BATGIRL #13

CONAN THE BARBARIAN #9–I think Becky Cloonan is back this issue.

DAN THE UNHARMABLE #6–Is this funny? I keep thumbing through it at the store and I can’t decide if it looks funny or not.

FANTASTIC FOUR #611–Soon to be reset. I’m just marking time on this one ’til the end.

FRANKENSTEIN AGENT OF SHADE #13–The #0 issue was actually pretty good. And normally I’m not a big fan of crossovers, but it seems like Frank should be a good fit for the Rot. We’ll see how it goes.

HOAX HUNTERS #4–DROPPED! Great concept–TV reality show “debunks” various Bigfoot, Nessie-type phenomena, but are actually covering up to protect them from publicity. But for some reason, rather than showing us the interesting things, the title kept revisiting genre cliches (redneck sheriff hinders investigation, etc.) Also, terribly stilted dialogue.

POPEYE #6–I’ll check it out in the store. $3.99 means I only get this sometimes (same with Peanuts).

WALKING DEAD MICHONNE SPECIAL–This looks awesome.

  3. One more comment. (Can you tell I’m at work on Columbus Day? In a government office, where the contractors are the only ones here?)

I believe Marvel NOW! begins next week, and in my opinion, it will pretty much be a disaster.

When the Nu52 started, I picked up a good dozen #1s, and a year later, I’m still following five titles regularly. Up from four before the re-boot, so for DC that counts as a big temporary bump, and a 25% long-term increase. Sure I’m just one customer, but I don’t think that’s unusual.

But with Marvel NOW! I’m only trying a few #1s because most of them are $3.99. Not that I can’t afford the extra dollar, but $3.99 simply breaks the psychological barrier that makes my subconscious calculate “this is not worth it.”

So, of Marvel NOW!, I’ll pick up
    Avengers (Hickman)
    Fantastic Four
    FF
    Indestructible Hulk
    Captain America

Of these, I’m already a regular reader of two (Fa4 and FF), which I’m just as likely to drop with a new team as to continue getting. And the $3.99 titles had better be pretty damn good for me to continue getting them. So Marvel NOW! may very well end up REDUCING my monthly Marvel tally.

Again, I’m just one reader, but if I’m typical, and you multiply me by all Marvel readers, things aren’t looking real good. Even at best, I think it will end up a wash for Marvel. But more likely to be a real cluster.

  4. The Saga trade, $9.99 for six issues, released a month or so after issue #6 was on stands, is an almost too generous, too convenient way of doing collections. Thank you, Image. I bought the Glory trade, and I’m buying this one too.

There’s a good chance Batman #13, with it’s trumped up “Joker more dangerous than evar!” story, will read like a Spawn or Kiss Psycho Circus comic from 1995. Even if it does, half the internet will instantly hail it as best Joker story ever. I buy this series because it’s fun, though, honestly, only marginally better, and only marginally different, from anything Tony Daniel did in his much-less-critically-acclaimed Bat-tenure.

Wolverine & The X-Men has an AvX banner on their book this week. I hope it’s just an epilogue thing. Otherwise, why on earth put the Doop issue out before this one? I shouldn’t complain. We ALL needed a break from the AvX tie-ins.

Uncanny Avengers #1 — It just feels wrong to even write “Avengers” after the word “Uncanny”. There’s no way I’d pay $4 for this. There’s no way I’ll pay $25 for the first 4-issue(!) collection. But I’ll probably get this for free on store credit this week. Marvel Now does not excite me at all. Remender is generally quite good, though. If Cassaday’s interior work doesn’t look rusty, I’ll be pleasantly surprised.

  5. Popeye!! YAY!

    The Saga trade! YAY!

I think that’s all for me…other than the Adventure Time book.

  6. The Spongebob comic has the first Steve Bissette comic book art since forever. (Also work from Tony Millionaire and Al Jaffee.) That rates a pickup sight unseen.

I’m also down for the penultimate issues of the current Captain America & Iron Man runs–which I’ve enjoyed but I think I’m ready to enjoy not buying them for a few years–Conan, Popeye and the latest Essential Thor volume, which ought to bring the run up to where I first came in, back in the mid-70s.

  7. Hey, Once Apon A Time Machine is coming out in Trade Paperback.
Its Sci-fi imaginings of Fairy Tales, with art by Farel Dalrymple (sp?), Brandon Graham, Marian Churchland and others. Looks like it’ll be fun.

  8. LAST WEEK!

    ACTION COMICS #13
Hey, I really like the way that the Phantom Zone mirror was more cracked at the end than at the beginning. Almost like things aren’t supposed to come out of it, right? Also, probably expressing an unpopular opinion, I don’t see the point of bringing Krypto into this reality. I like Krypto, he’s great in a manner of speaking, but given carte blanche it’s telling that DC (and arguably their most imaginative creator) are seemingly rudderless when it comes to defining their masthead. Beyond saying, “Well, I’m sure it’ll be better when he’s not married.” I struggle to find much that’s well defined about the new Superman.

BLACK KISS II #3 (OF 6)
(digital) I can’t unsee that JohnK photoshop of Chaykin winking.

    DANGER CLUB #4
I am a fan of this creative team. Evidence: After scouring the back issue bins for individual copies of Supergirl Cosmic Adventures in the 8th grade I’ve risked FBI targeting by purchasing the trade online. Thanks, Landry Walker!

    DIAL H #5
After a particularly divisive 0 issue (that I didn’t read, whew) this series picks right up and resolves the initial magilla. I wonder if the mandate was “NO MORE YEAR-LONG STORIES, DAMN IT.”

    EARTH 2 #5
This is about as Super Powersy as I want it to get, honestly. There’s some incredibly clunky “LOOK AT MY VILLAINY” in play here and the GRUNDY looks like he stumbled out of your local S&M dungeon. What, you don’t have those? However – if we grant the story as taking place on an alt earth that’s a little less gritty and a little more “Type of a place that oddly chose “Wonders” as a stand-in term for Superhero” type of place – if I squint I can let it get through. Also, nice to know the Green Lantern still remembers the boyfriend that was killed less than 24 hours ago? Do I have that timeline right? As usual, with Robinson, there’s a warm-up period.

    WORLDS FINEST #5
Welp, turns out Maguire had nothing to say about it after doing all the lifting on the one zero issue. That part sucked. Issue was ok, as I recall. As much as I feel they should just go throw money at some of the writers Lena Dunham has on “Girls” to make this book the guys do ok. Don’t know how much longer I’m going to be cool with PG constantly getting her breasts blasted free from captivity though. You know, just, leave it alone. Seriously, we get it.

    THIS WEEK!

    ARCHER & ARMSTRONG (NEW) #3
Selling really well and reading really well.

    BATMAN #13
What’ll you do without the owls, mate? Oh, Joker? O….k? I have to agree with Will B. I think, at minimum, Snyder gives me a semi-vulnerable Batman fighting for real stakes. Also, Capullo brings the dynamism that IMHO no other Bat artist has really pulled off since BREYFOGLE. All that said, I think the reaction has been hyperbole laden.

    BLOODSHOT (ONGOING) #4
The Fall of Valiant doesn’t really have the same positive ring that Summer of Valiant does and yet I continue to pick up what they’re putting out.

    CONAN THE BARBARIAN #9
Also looking forward to Wood’s Star Wars book. This has been an easy buy for me. Add me to the chorus – CLOONAN!

MACGYVER FUGITIVE GAUNTLET #1 (OF 5)
WHAT THE HELL? The MacGyver? For real?

PUNK ROCK JESUS #4 (OF 6)
My stomach twists when two of my favorites don’t like each other. Good value.

    SUPERBOY #13
Hrm…how much do I love RB Silva? This much. Please start making this more about Fairchild again soon.

FINDER TALISMAN HC – I enjoyed Voice. I’ll look at this for sure.

SAGA TP VOL 01 – I never do this. NEVER. I’m buying a trade copy for myself (because I cut up all my singles to make a cover gallery for the Donut Shop) and I’m buying one to be my “loner copy” for philistine conversion. Friends, beware!

    Best to everyone!

  9. LAST WEEK:

BIONIC WOMAN #5, THIEF OF THIEVES #9 and LONE RANGER #10 were noted as potential disapointments and sad to report there were no surprises, as they each scored a solid OKAY on the Savage-o-meter. DAREDEVIL END OF DAYS #1 was set to be my book of the week, but it too managed just an OKAY, and reminded me a bit overmuch of Batman: Oddysey (and not in some impossible to imagaine ‘good way’). GI COMBAT was GOOD as birthday boy HV Chaykin brought the stuff, as one would expect.

A real surprise for Book Of the Week, which was ACTION COMICS #13. J_Smitty_ recommended it, and freinds, it was EXCELLENT.

Let’s see what THIS WEEK holds:

ARCHER & ARMSTRONG (NEW) #3 – just read the first two yesterday. This is a rioutousely fun book!

BATMAN #13 – now Owl Free! but OH NOEZ the Joker!

BEFORE WATCHMEN DR MANHATTAN #2 – Great art. Yep, that’s all I can say.

CONAN THE BARBARIAN #9 – great book.

GREEN LANTERN CORPS #13 – still my preferred GL book. I was more excited by the ‘third corps’ before I actually saw it…it all seems so, derivitive. I don’t know why I was surprised at how “Geoff Johns-ey” it is as an idea, but I was surprised.

KEVIN KELLER #5 PARENT VAR CVR – I am a total slave for riffs on Action Comics #1 covers.

PHANTOM STRANGER #1 – Nostalgia buy. This is effectively pre-DROPPED after reading the AWFUL #0.

STUMPTOWN V2 #2 – Good Rucka-fueled first issue. So what’s the deal with the guitar?

    THINK TANK #3 – #1 was good, but I missed #2.

    BOOKS AND SUCH:

JUDGE DREDD DIGEST TP DARK JUDGES my LCS tells me that this is awaiting me tomorrow. Ten bucks for a lot of Mega City One ultra violence.

    SAGA TP – of course.

Thelonious_Nick made it one issue further on HOAX HUNTERS tahn I did, but I am totally taking his recommendation for AVENGING SPIDER-MAN #13. Dude! It’s the Hypno Hustler! And Cole Moore Odell tells me Stephen R Bissette is on SPONGE BOB #13 ?! That is simply too intriguing to miss! And Dave Clarke has sold me on ONCE UPON A TIME MACHINE! I already have HELLBLAZER THE DEVILS TRENCH COAT TP in singles, and thought it was creepy fun! Toss in a flip through RED SHE HULK, and it looks like a worthwhile trip to the shop.

    COMICS! I do, do YOU?

  10. First I’ve heard of this BARACK HUSSEIN OBAMA HC, and the blurb on amazon sounds very interesting. I’m gonna give it a look.

  11. Bah, spoke too soon. I checked out the preview pages, and now I’m done with it. Nevermind.

  12. Everyone else has probably got their comics, but I’m not off to the shop for another hour or so, and had some time to kill…
LAST WEEK: Splurged on the Jim Aparo Batman collection. Great stuff as Aparo pencils Haney’s the Brave And The Bold scripts (which are of course bug-fuck crazy – too hard to pick a highlight, be it Batman going in for an operation wearing his uniform, or Black Canary messing up a stakeout by stopping to get her hair done, then going undercover in a women’s lib meeting that was smuggling smack).
I really enjoyed John Layman’s Detective Comics debut, and bought a Life With Archie comic for the Francavilla variant cover, and it turns out that’s the most depressing comic in the world. Growing up sucks.

    THIS WEEK;
BATMAN #13 – I will, but I don’t want to! I wish Snyder was writing stories rather than events. Thank god for Capullo!

CONAN THE BARBARIAN #9 – Conan Vs the Conan impersonator! Who will win? Cloonan leaving sucks, but this book still kicks it

CREEP #2 – A PI with giangantism investigates the suicide of his high school sweetheart’s son and his best friend. This book is kooky, yet has some real emotion to it. Arcudi writes well, and Case’s art is up to Dark Horse’s high standards.

DEMON KNIGHTS #13 – Did the #0 issue mean Jason and Etrigan are conning everyone else on the team with their hatred of each other? Because that’s pretty cool, and hilarious in the context of their relationships with Xanadu.

FRANKENSTEIN AGENT OF SHADE #13 – this depends on how tied in to Rotworld it is. May skip it.

MASSIVE #5 – Something will happen this issue, I’m sure of it! Still an intriguing read even if nothing happens at all.

MORNING GLORIES #22 – The book Nick Spencer writes that is good.

POINT OF IMPACT #1 (OF 4) – Near Death was spectacular, so I go into Faeber’s next book with high hopes.

PUNK ROCK JESUS #4 (OF 6) – If it’s anything like the previous three issues, I’ll probably spend more time looking at this comic than any other comic I buy this week.

UNCANNY AVENGERS #1 NOW – I’ll give Marvel a shot with their latest attempt.

BAKUMAN TP VOL 15 – If not this week, then at some point. It’s comic book perfection, and it’s about making comics! That’s doubleplusgood!

  13. I heard that the one book I was looking forward to this week, the Alan Davis “Batman” collection (loved, loved, loved those stories he did with Mike W. Barr back in the ’80s), was delayed due to a couple of missing pages. Does anyone know if this is true?
