  1. Light week–which is good, since I haven’t touched the stack from last week (busy!). Looking forward to checking out the new Sandman, I just can’t get to it yet….

ALEX + ADA #1–So dude gets a new fembot and can’t decide whether or not to keep it. Intriguing, could be good, could be really creepy. Gets a flip-through.

CAPTAIN AMERICA #13–Not as good since Cap’s come back from Zola’s dimension. I’ll give it another arc and see if it improves.

GRINDHOUSE DOORS OPEN AT MIDNIGHT #2 (OF 8)–First issue was entertaining, not really sure I need to keep following, but it is a light week so I’ll probably pick this up.

SWAMP THING #25–My last non-Vertigo DC title. Fortunately it’s consistently good.

  2. Also plowing through a pile, but since they’re mostly really good, who can complain.

    This week’s additions will include:

ALEX + ADA #1 – cute goth girl at my LCS recommended it, and who am I to argue with cute goth girls?

    CATALYST COMIX #5

FOREVER EVIL #3 – all this is missing in order to feel like a true bronze Age JLA/JSA cross-over is a floating heads cover.

GREEN ARROW #25 – winding down on this, I think.

    HINTERKIND #2

JUDGE DREDD CLASSICS #5 – long lost Progs.

LEGENDS OF RED SONJA #1 (OF 5) – nice assortment of talent, and a Frank Thorne cover.

SWAMP THING #25 – I really liked that annual! Bronto-swampy needs an action figure.

  3. CATALYST COMIX #5- Always really good. Art and colors are just perfect. Keep the crazy-ass bombast coming, Joe Casey. If you don’t like unnecessary and redundant bombast I can’t recommend it.

EAST OF WEST- Is anyone reading this and what do you think? I read issues 1 and 4. I was totally lost, but it also seemed like not much had yet developed. I’d just like to know how it’s truckin’ along.

GREEN ARROW #25- I recently jumped on and DC has made it really hard to stay on. End of arc, villain month, start new arc, zero year. Might just skip it, might just pick it up. Hoping Ollie goes “I’m green you!” to Bruce. Maybe Batwing can go “I’m black you!” in his tie-in too.

MICHAEL AVON OEMING’S VICTORIES #6- The numbering has made this book nearly inaccessible. It started with an introductory 5 part mini. Then there was a 3 part serial in DHP where I was introduced to it (and had no idea wtf was going on). Then there was a slow building 5 part mini that was really great by the end. Now it’s just ongoing from there. It’s heady, inky, darker than dark (child rape, eating disorder, concentration camp, cannibal) stuff in Oeming’s signature style and it works for me.

REGULAR SHOW #5- Might be Skippin’ some issues from here on in. It’s good but not crucial.

STAR WARS #3 (OF 8) LUCAS DRAFT AKA THE STAR WARS- This sucks I need to stop.

TRILLIUM #4- Still liking it a lot. Gunna get to some good stuff here I think.

  4. @Brendan: I read the first issue of East of West when it came out. Then I waited and read the first collection when it came out. My experience was the same both times: a dozen storytelling elements and tricks that I’ve seen hundreds of times before, and this time around the remix isn’t as interesting. Hickman keeps stringing things along, but there are many bizarre things that don’t seem to make much sense and I have no confidence at all that he will make the payoff worth the wait. Some of the questions I had after reading issue 1 were indeed revealed in the next few issues, and the payoffs there just weren’t that great. I run hot and cold on Hickman, but I’m definitely not just dazzled by his “intellectual randomizer” of a storytelling process. I’m passing on this one.

  5. LAST WEEK/S – Pretty Deadly looked good, but unfortunately my retailer had ripped it up and sticky taped it back together out of order, so the story didn’t make much sense.
Velvet hit my sweet spot and then some. A nice mish-mash of everything espionage – a few online seem to be getting caught up in ‘is it a Steranko or is it Fleming homage’ when it seems be pulling from everywhere. I hope for Le Carre plots and characters, in movie Bond adventures, done in a Steranko style. But it was a VERY GOOD.
Five Ghosts was a let down due to Garry Brown being on art. Nothing against Brown, he’s alright, but he keeps getting put on books after their opening arc, when the announced artist leaves with no warning. (Conan and The Massive as well). He’s the new Luke McDonnel! It was an alright issue, but without Chris Mooneyham returning on art, I can’t see the book lasting as long – the was the appeal to the book. No one was reading it for the story.
I also bulk read all of Astro City to date (in trade) and then got caught up on the ongoing, and read Chester Brown’s Louis Riel. Both were Excellent.

    CATALYST COMIX #5 (OF 9)

DAREDEVIL DARK NIGHTS #6 (OF 8) – I have a particular fondness for Lee Weeks and David Lapham, which is why I was on getting this series, but it doesn’t extend to this creative team, who can be quite good, but also decidedly mediocre, and also Before Watchman-y. ick. Maybe.

EAST OF WEST #7 – Nick Dragotta is the star of the show.

FATALE #18 – I’ve been digging this grunge era arc. I hope horrible things happen to all the characters.

HINTERKIND #2 (MR) – #1 was much better than I’d expect given the publisher. It felt fresh, despite drawing from the same well as other popular ‘properties’ in film and prose right now. This deserves to be a hit, and hopefully finally crack the US market for Ian Edington.

MIGHTY AVENGERS #3 – #2 of this came out? My store either didn’t get it, or sold out fast – which is odd as they still have a heap of #1.

@Brendan – East Of West is trucking fine. It’s a book where you have to read every issue for it to make sense. It can be annoying reading it monthly as the book expects you to remember everything that’s happened – and Hickman isn’t a man who writes memorable scenes or lines of dialogue, often trying to be cryptic rather than entertaining – but if you read them in bulk, it all makes perfect sense.
But really, it’s Nick Dragotta’s book – his art is perfect for a mystical sci-fi apocalyptic western romp.

  6. @wattan: Hickman does have a reputation for big buildups and payoffs. It’s a little scary to hear that you don’t have confidence in this one. I guess time will tell?

@Ben Lipman: Cool, thanks. I agree Dragotta’s art the main attraction. I find myself going back to look at the pictures instead of the words. I think I’ll go in for the trade in that case.

  7. Ben, your store may have sold out of Mighty Avengers 32 so fast because they saw how many copies they didn’t sell of #1 and slashed their orders for #2 at FOC.

  8. @Ralph – Well, they had a few of #2 and #3 this time, so either there was a shipping issue, or #2 had the most generic looking Infinity villain cover, with the team reflected off a helmet and a tiny logo in the lower left corner near the bar code where my eyes aren’t going to be drawn, so I just missed it.
    It’s a really bland cover.
