  1. This is a pretty solid week for me:

BATWOMAN #5: Few things prettier than these JH3 pencils.

NORTHLANDERS #47: Can’t believe there’s only 3 issues left after this and then Brian Wood is basically done at DC.

SCALPED #55: With DMZ recently wrapped, this is now the best book currently being published at Vertigo.

SECRET AVENGERS #21: Last Warren Ellis issue! Nice to see the Nextwave team together again, with Stuart Immonen on.

  2. AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #677

AVENGERS 1959 #5 (OF 5) – John K (UK) was right about this one. I read 1-4 weekend before last, and it was a rollicking good time.

BATMAN AND ROBIN #5 – Everyone should at least give this a flick through, as last issue Patrick Gleason really came of age. It was great looking stuff.

    DEMON KNIGHTS #5
    FRANKENSTEIN AGENT OF SHADE #5

INCREDIBLE HULK #4 – 1-3 was good fun, but at $3.99, I’m not sure Aaron’s script can keep me around through Whilce’s pencils. Wonder who they’ll get to do the pages he can’t finish next issue?

    LEGION LOST #5
MISTER TERRIFIC #5 – The sort of book everyone says they want, but no one reads. (Well, to be fair, it’s heading that way. It’s a little bit wonky, but their hearts are in the right spot).

SCARLET SPIDER #1 – I’m pretty much only buying this because the other month Wacker slammed JMS on Facebook, for being bitchy, and ended it with a plug for this book.I want to reward that kind of guerrilla advertising campaign.

SECRET AVENGERS #21 – I took a dim view of all but the first issue of this run, but last issue won me over as well.

SEVERED #6 (OF 7) – Geez louise does Scott Snyder need to speed his comics up. I could live with the delays on this title, but last issue the plot didn’t move at all.

    SUPERBOY #5

  3. Frankenstein #5:
OMAC! I haven’t read OMAC #5 yet, so I don’t know if I should be all that excited. But: I read an interview with Lemire and I like where he’s headed with this (in concept anyways) so I’m sticking around.

    Incredible Hulk #4:
Please, comic, let me like you! Still more wonky story-telling in #3:
Piggie gets punched through the ocean floor to a mountaintop – next panel he’s back underground with Hulk. Their fight seems to cause disasters all over the world. Huh? Piggies fall down lava pit, Hulk seems to leave, then Piggies look like Hulk did a number on them in truly unsettling last page. C’mon Silvestri – I read your X-Men lo those many years ago: I know you know how to make a comic! What the hell?

But random Hulked-out animals keep bringing me back…

    Demon Knights #5 – maybe:
I shall look at this with a jaundiced eye, rather than habitually picking it up. Kick this sputtering bike into gear or else I’m gone.

  4. And to think I was saying last week was a bit light…

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #677 (for the Daredevil crossover… it’s actually the first issue of this title I’ve ever bought, and the first Spider-Man comic I ever paid full price for, as almost everything else has been borrowed from friends or libraries)
    BATWOMAN #5
    DEMON KNIGHTS #5
FRANKENSTEIN AGENT OF SHADE #5 (I plan to pick up OMAC in trade when it comes out, but in the meantime I hope this reads well enough on its own)
MEGA MAN #9 REG CVR (eh, the old Archie TMNT series was my gateway drug to comics, I guess this is my nostalgia where the rest of you guys have X-Men)
RAY #2 (OF 4) – probably should have dropped this, but I liked the preview so much, and it’s “only 4 issues” or something
    SECRET AVENGERS #21
SHADE #4 (OF 12) – picking this up thanks to Robinson’s “we’re gonna get canceled!” stunt, but so far glad of it

  5. AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #677
Echo Carl on this one. Daredevil brings me in for the first time in the “modern” era

    AVENGERS 1959 #5 (OF 5)
Oh yes, my friends…it shall be brought. HVC wraps up his jaunt through “Guys that might have lived in the 50’s and had a shared interest in Nazi extermination.” Good enough for me.

    DEMON KNIGHTS #5
Cornell got his hooks into me by pushing Shining Knight to the front and embracing the feeling of being called to duty. Morrison nailed that in the Shining Knight mini and this was the first inkling I had in this series that Ystin was going to be more than a weird Orlando style cypher.

    INVINCIBLE #87
Best and most innovative cape book being put out. A little preoccupied with “the getting laid” but hey…who isn’t?

    SHADE #4 (OF 12)
Robinson writes my kind of comics for the most part and I find myself drawn to his ability for re-interpretation without destruction. One of the few I see who are comfortable “world-building” within an acceptable framework.

    Superboy #5
I’ve liked RB Silva since I first saw him on the Jimmy Olsen special which made us all think Nick Spencer could write the shit out of an awesome modern comic. Oops. Anywho, Fairchild has been a pretty slick insertion and I like the feeling I’m getting that Superboy is cobbled together from more than just Supes + Lex. There’s a little bit of Legion of Super Heroes in there, methinks.

In the digital realm this week I’m reading Smoke by Alex DeCampi and Igor Kordrey. It’s a shame the only thing people think of when Kordrey’s name comes up is the awful and rushed fill-ins he did on Morrison’s New X-Men. To my limited eye this series has a Corben + Neal Adams kinda thing going on. DeCampi has only made me squint once or twice in the first issue and at the comixology price of .99 cents an issue (150 pages-ish of ad free content for under $3) it’s a bargain.

The Kickstarter for her next book “Ashes” cleared the funding goal on December 18th and hey Jimmy Broxton of Knight and Squire!

  6. Its a bat-a-licious week here!

ALL NEW BATMAN THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD #15 – Mister Miracle in town for some good Kirby madness. Only one issue left of this great series, which is a madness all its own.

BATGIRL #5 – #4 didn’t quite work for me, but the art still remains among the best of the nu.

BATWOMAN #5 – utterly gorgeous stuff. I will have happy eyes.

BTVS SEASON 9 FREEFALL #5 – being inventive and moving the story along quite well.

GREEN LANTERN #5 – last issue suffered from Johns Decompression Disorder. Here’s hoping this issue wraps things up, although the 5 page teaser doesn’t give me confidence of that.

NORTHLANDERS #47 – the best comic you’ll read about Iceland in 2012. Guaranteed.

SHADE #4 (OF 12) – wow, and not a good ‘wow’. Last issue was totally “meh” for me, except for that last page. I might have been happier having ONLY that reveal be the issue.

SUICIDE SQUAD #5 – guilty pleasure. Despite the ludicrous outfit, Harley is the clear star. Last issue REALLY made that evident.

THE STRAIN #2 (OF 12) – the dollar teaser did its job, and did it very well indeed. While I haven’t read the novels, I was very impressesd with the comic and am back for more. Good horror.

  7. BATWOMAN #5
    LEGION LOST #5
LOBSTER JOHNSON THE BURNING HAND #1 (OF 5)
    PIGS #5 (MR)

BLUE ESTATE TP VOL 02 (MR)

  8. 5

Smoke is indeed a fabulous deal at that price. Often recommend this one.

  9. ****SPOILERS?*****

@JohnK(UK) and all other right thinking comics fans:

    Avengers 1959

    You guys – DOCTORANGUTAN, FTW!

  10. @J_Smitty: Seriously? OMG! What is that now Baron Blood, Brain Drain,The Planner, Leopard Woman(?),Axis Annie etc. For someone who says he couldn’t give less of a chuff about the actual super hero characters HVC sure went back and dug up some obscure doozies. DOCTORANGUTAN! Bojemoi, that HVC guy!

Also, I’d like to thank anyone who took a spin on AVENGERS 1959. As I’m sure would Howard Victor Chaykin’s barman. If you did try it and didn’t like it…um, sorry?

  11. Did HVC create those nasty Nazi ladies?
Their names escape me right now, other than the just mentioned Axis Annie, but they were great.

Also that Chaykin… he sure can draw good speed boats. It’s not often enough one gets to say that about an artist.
