Arriving 11/14/12

Brian Hibbs

It’s a, frankly, dynamite week for high profile periodicals — Like waiting for a mass transit bus, they’re all coming this week, with four brand new MarvelNOW! #1 launches (and a #9) (and another issue of She-Hulk, so, 6 I guess?), and three installments of the “Death of the Family” crossover. PLUS, the last issue of BOYS, the first post-TP issue of SAGA (yay!), and, mm, yes, ZAUCER OF ZILK.

Plus, a number of awesome reprint graphic novels, too.

  1. LAST WEEK:
I tried two Marvel NOW! #1’s – Deadpool and Iron-man. Deadpool won by a country mile – Tony Moore can do comedy really well.
Iron-Man, was kinda boring and felt like everything you’ve ever seen in an Iron-Man comic before, but less so. The only problem with Land’s art is he isn’t given much to do. It also challenged Batman #13’s “He told… a joke” for most ridiculous worst line of the year with the last line of the issue “We’ve all got our demons Maya, and I promise you… yours go back in the bottle”.
Dial H #6 was mad-good, with Lapham on art. Earth 2 #6 was alright, although I’d hoped the team would be together from this point – I loved that they dumped their defeated enemy on the moon, it sets up future plots but was so Silver Age at the same time – and am starting to think this may be more Heroes than JSA.
Detective Comics #14 continued Layman writing a Batman who should be coloured blue and grey. My only complaint was a caption that said “Arkham Asylum” being placed on an illustration which included a clear sign that said “Arkham Asylum”.
I’m dropping Green Arrow after #14 even though I’ve not read the issue – it’s part of a crossover with Hawkman and Grifter, and Noncenti is leaving soon anyway, and as Freddie Williams is on art I’m not sure I’ll ever read this ish.
The Thought Bubble anthology from Leeds Festival was probably my book of the week – it’s a format and style of anthology I’d like to see more of, and the strips are nearly all great. The lonely Bond villain was my fave.
(Still got a heap to read from last week).

    THIS WEEK:

ALL NEW X-MEN #1 NOW – I’m curious as to how this is going to play out, but advance reviews say the first issue cliffhanger is the reveal of the concept we already know, so maybe I’ll just wait till #2 is out.

BATMAN #14 (DOTF) – Will this be the month I summon the nerve to go with my instincts on this book?

CONAN THE BARBARIAN #10 – Yay!

CREEP #3 – This is the sort of book Dark Horse does so well: good creators doing something that’s unique.

DEMON KNIGHTS #14 – I’m not sure if I’ll stay on after Cornell leaves.

FRANKENSTEIN AGENT OF SHADE #14 (ROT) – It’s getting canceled and I wasn’t thrilled about buying Rot crossover issues…

    GREAT PACIFIC #1 – I’m intrigued…

    MASSIVE #6 – …and I’m a sucker for environmental disaster books.

MIND MGMT #0 – Cool. Is this the web previews in print form or something else?

PUNK ROCK JESUS #5 (OF 6) – People keep wondering what’s next for Vertigo now that they’ve lost Hellblazer – hopefully more books like this. They should always have had more of this in their line-up. Get ready to read a thousand blog reviews once it gets collected.

    SAGA #7 – Yay!

    SAUCER COUNTRY #9 – Yay!

WOLVERINE AND X-MEN #20 – I think Aaron’s done what only Claremont and Morrison have achieved before, writing a book that is clearly X-Men, but has such a personal stamp on it.

X-MEN LEGACY #1 NOW – I used to love Tan Eng Huat’s art on his and John Arcudi’s low-selling Doom Patrol book, but not sure if it’s enough to get me onto this.

ZAUCER OF ZILK #2 (OF 2) – Zikes!

  2. Looking forward to finally reading SCENE OF THE CRIME.

  3. LAST WEEK!

    ACTION COMICS #14
Huzzah for a return to “disturbing character trait” Grant Morrison. Seeing the 5D villain going “Hnnhnn” “Hnnhnn” over and over while turning people into piles of goop was the right kind of disturbing. The silly back-up has Chris Sprouse on art. CHRIS SPROUSE!

BLACK KISS II #4 (OF 6)
I don’t think the shop is stocking this any longer. To digital or not to digital?

    DIAL H #6
Good news, this was a cool issue and Lapham is a fine change of pace.

    EARTH 2 #6
Everybody I listen to was all “Blah” about the team not getting together. I’m just the opposite. Don’t hit the rote points. Thank you! Skip all that shit. If Earth 2 is different – make it so. “Wonders” still has terrible mouth feel for something that supposedly rolls off the tongue.

    SHADOW #7
2/10 would not buy. I don’t get how people can continually F*$k up such a simple concept. Flick, flick, Shadow fights a big guy and gets hurt. (Whips comic across room.)

    WORLDS FINEST #6
God, I love this art team. Making Perez only responsible for half the page count is one of the few editorial decisions of the last xx years I can legit call a genius move. Maguire gets a lot of love for his expressions – and I love them as well – but his figure work is unreal. People have persistent scale. I never see any technical problems and that’s something to hang your hat on.

    THIS WEEK!

This week is a bank breaker for me and as such a lot of these titles are going to get the flip test. Telling, also, that the comics getting the harshest flip will be my remaining DC buys.

    ARCHER & ARMSTRONG (NEW) #4
    BATMAN #14 (DOTF)
    BLOODSHOT (ONGOING) #5
    CONAN THE BARBARIAN #10
    INVINCIBLE #97
PUNK ROCK JESUS #5 (OF 6)
    SAGA #7
    SAUCER COUNTRY #9
    SUPERBOY #14
ZAUCER OF ZILK #2 (OF 2)

  4. Wait!!! Whoa!

The last LOCKE & KEY arc starts this week? How do I keep losing track of this stuff? That’s the most enjoyable comic I’ve read in years, by one of the most consistently entertaining pop writers out there.

  5. @Ben Lipman: Are your instincts to stop reading Snyder’s Batman?
