On the one hand, this week is less than half the size of last week’s shipment? But, on the other, SAGA! The new FABLES TP! ONE TRICK RIP OFF! Yeah, those three right there are nearly equal to the rest of last week combined…

  1. Daredevil #22

…and a *bunch* of books that I want to get, but they are either not what they once were, not worth the price being charged, or both. Seriously, Waid on Hulk? Mignola on anything? And Cornell built up some serious goodwill on Demon Knights. I souldn’t have to be thinking once, much less twice and three times if I really want to read these books.

    But I am.

I am not saying that “All-Winners Squad: Band of Heroes” is at fault. But I am not saying it has nothing to do with my jaded enuii, either.

  2. LAST WEEK:
I read a a few recently completed Image mini-series. Infinite Vacation was alright, but that’s all. I would have been more impressed if it had stayed hard sci-fi rather than using it’s concept for a boy meets girl story. I like big ideas to be explored, not serve as window dressing for tired ideas. Not really good enough for a series that took two years to come out – and then charging $5.99 for a really padded out final issue? Sheesh.
Harvest had a great first issue, full of crazy and ugly, but each issue delivered less and less, and their decision to write this as the opening arc/pilot episode rather than a story in and of itself hurt the book to the point it won’t be continued by anyone, especially as the concept “Former organ trafficker is stealing organs back from former clients to atone for his sins” doesn’t have the legs for an open ended ongoing story/tv series.
Point Of Impact was Ok. Not Faeber’s best, and the art was only serviceable. Was interesting and entertaining up until you got to the end, and were left a bit “huh? that was it?”.

    THIS WEEK:

ALL NEW X-MEN #6 – This is like cigarette’s. You know they aren’t good, but keep coming back for more.

BLACK BEETLE #1 (OF 4) NO WAY OUT – It’ll be beautiful if nothing else.

BLACK KISS II #6 (OF 6) – Finally over.

CONAN THE BARBARIAN #12 – Why isn’t Conan sick like everyone else?

    DAREDEVIL #22 – !

INDESTRUCTIBLE HULK #3 – Last chance for this series. Waid really needs to show the concept for this book already, not just talk about it.

NEW AVENGERS #2 – I’ll give it a flick. Last issue didn’t inspire much confidence, but it felt like a prologue rather than a beginning.

    SAGA #9 – AWESOME SAUCE!

  3. LAST WEEK!

    ACTION COMICS #16
I enjoyed this for the sheer hustle and bustle of it all. If I were younger and less jaded, opening this book for the first time, you’d think accessibility would be an issue. I like to think a multi-faced imp demon, a superhero team from the future, a squad of oddly powered assassins, and Superman facing long odds would be interesting enough to pull me in.

BPRD HELL ON EARTH #103 ABYSS TIME #1 (OF 2)
Awesome! James Harren is a FORCE. I am telling you, get this book. A great little jump-in window! The Mignola/Allie team spin a wonderful heroic origin with a supernatural twist as things fall to pieces in the larger world of BPRD. Harren, while an accomplished GORESMITH, shines brightly here in page layout, design sense, and the deft touch of a GOLDEN silent panel or two. Seriously great comic-bookery and a counterpoint to David Oakes concerns re: Mignola. I too feel the apathy towards Hellboy in Hell but perhaps it’s Scott Allie’s influence that sets this apart. Dave Stewart colors never hurt anything either. But seriously, Harren, Crook, Cloonan, Francavilla and a few other Dark Horse regulars are getting my juices flowing this year like Aja, Rivera, Samnee et al did last year.

    DIAL H #8
A good deal going on here. A plot, B plot, the sense that something could come along and derail both. I really enjoy NOT being led by the nose.

    EARTH 2 #8
I enjoyed it. Look for me haranguing Graeme in the Wait, What? thread whenever that goes up.

    INFINITE VACATION #5 (OF 5)
Man, Ben Lipman I am so with you on this. I had a real screed lined up but now I don’t even feel it’s worth it. I didn’t spend $6 on it and I laughed – out loud – in the shop when I saw your arty tiny blue dot triple fold out wank job of a blank page comic. D’aw he gets up the nuts to say hello to his manic pixie dream girl! How…small.

    STAR WARS #1
It’s a hot button, sure, but I read it digitally a few days ago and found enough in it to get me back for issue 2. Wood is good at relationships and I’m sure it’ll be fine. Also, Graeme is kinda cranky about the lack of comedy but the Chewie, Han thing is going to be laughs and if Threepio is involved it’s going to happen. The art didn’t do much for me but I’m stupid spoiled when it comes to Star Wars comics art so…

    WORLDS FINEST #8
I am utterly conflicted about this comic book. On the one hand the characterization of the principals is very good, the art verges on beautiful on a monthly basis, and Levitz really knows how to hammer out the points of a hallucinatory dream sequence to illuminate a character’s history with just a handful of big splashy images. Also, Maguire moved the PG logo off of Karen’s boob on the cover so that’s fixed. On the other hand, I think some sensitivity training may be in order for Leviitz’ handling of race relations. Seriously, the Muslim bad guy thing really feels particularly ham-fisted here. Like, Dixon level ham-fisted. Not great.

    THIS WEEK!
    ARCHER & ARMSTRONG (NEW) #6
I love this creative team. Don’t stop the music.

BATMAN #16 (DOTF) Make or break week for me. This is a drop if the Joker continues to be so much LESS in the hands of Snyder as opposed to Morrison.

BLACK BEETLE #1 (OF 4) NO WAY OUT
Heard so many good things about this.

    BLOODSHOT (ONGOING) #7
Yeah it’s definitely at odds with my gentle nature.

    BPRD 1948 #4 (OF 5)
Kid Hellboy continues to be adorable.

    CONAN THE BARBARIAN #12
Um, I don’t really remember what happened last issue so…new reader jumping on point?

SAGA #9 When I think diseased scrotums I think SILENCE! and Saga, of course.

SUPERBOY #16 Nah, this is pretty dropped. I’ll look to see if Silva is back and if he’s got his inking sorted out. Ugh, so many “ifs.”

ONE TRICK RIP OFF DEEP CUTS HC
Hey, Paul Pope. What the hell, right?

  4. BATGIRL #16 (DOTF)–These last couple of issues are a farewell to Batgirl for me, as I’ll be dropping it as soon as Simone is off the title. Is it time to re-assess? Could these be the best title of the past 25 years?

BATMAN #16 (DOTF)–I’m not a real Joker fanatic, but a lot of his behavior for, oh, two decades now, seems to have been pure sadism, just to show what a badass evil guy he is. What I like about the Death of the Family is that we’re seeing Joker’s sadism in service of a larger point. A sick, twisted point, to be sure, but a point: he’s trying to “cure” Batman of all the familial ties that are weakening him for his true mission of fighting crime. It makes him almost sympathetic.

CAPTAIN AMERICA #3 NOW–JR Jr.’s art is hit-or-miss for me, but I feel it’s really working here. Don’t know how long I’ll follow the $3.99 twice-a-month, but I’m on board for now.

CONAN THE BARBARIAN #12–Ben has a good point–why is Conan the only one not to be infected? Is this some disease Cimmerians are exposed to as children?

    DAREDEVIL #22–Superior Spider-Man appearance, I think. Hmm.

FRANKENSTEIN AGENT OF SHADE #16–Almost to the end. Glad I followed this, it was a nice, offbeat little series.

NEW AVENGERS #2 NOW–Still haven’t finished the first issue, so highly unlikely to get this one. Am I an atypical customer, or is Marvel’s new-issue-every-ten-minutes publishing schedule driving away customers in droves?

    SAGA #9

SAVAGE WOLVERINE #1 NOW–Frank Cho drawing dinosaurs and babes in bikinis. This is the kind of title and concept that needs to be as lurid as possible to work, I think.

  5. @J_Smitty – “D’aw he gets up the nuts to say hello to his manic pixie dream girl! How…small.”

And all it took for him to work the courage up was to first visit the world where he was married to her. The whole “I chose you” thing really loses it’s edge when the character has already seen it leads to a perfect life.

@Thelonious_Nick – Y’know, they put Simone back on Batgirl. And then denied they’d ever fired her.
