  1. LAST WEEK

BPRD HELL ON EARTH #100 RETURN O/T MASTER #3 (OF 5)
Manohman, I love this stuff. It’s strange too because I never even thought I would. Giving up Marvel inertia buys really opened up my reading. Thanks, Mr. @$$hole Editor and various other horrors!

    HAPPY #2 (OF 4)
    Yeah…no.

ROCKETEER CARGO OF DOOM #3 (OF 4)
    ***SPOILERS***
There is comfort in a Mark Waid / Chris Samnee comic.

    THIS WEEK

    ACTION COMICS #14
In it for the Moz finish wherein – presumably – he will somehow incorporate the Seven Soldiers. (fingers crossed)

BLACK KISS II #4 (OF 6)
“How debauched can it be?” He asked with a raised eyebrow and a queasy stomach.

    DIAL H #6
I liked how arc 1 tossed us into the deep end of the pool. If the fat schlubby guy ever becomes a competent hero I may bail. Fish out of water is not a trope that’s used effectively any more. Personally, I blame gaming structure. Always levelling up. Used to be if you sucked at Pac-Man you might just suck at Pac-Man forever. I hope this dude never gets his “Blackrazor” H-Dial

    EARTH 2 #6
Yeah…c’mon Robinson. Let’s…get…that…dialogue off of the ear bleed setting.

    SHADOW #7
Every post Ennis thing I’ve ever read has been shit. I don’t really look for this offering to break that trend.

    WORLDS FINEST #6
I likes it. Hopefully with a full freight train of Maguire this ish.

NIKOLAI DANTE SYMPATHY FOR THE DEVIL GN
A highly recommended compilation of the 2000AD serial may well come home with me!

    SPACEMAN DELUXE EDITION HC
I can’t really think of any book I’ve purchased a complete run of being less deserving of a Deluxe HC. I bet this is an orders only for Hibbs.

  2. Nope, I went fairly deep on SPACEMAN, actually — we sell a LOT of 100 BULLETS.

  3. AVENGING SPIDER-MAN #14–As usual with this title, it gets a flip-through if I like the team-up, which this week is…Devil Dinosaur and Moon-boy. Good chance I’ll get it.

    DIAL H #6–Still digging it.

    POPEYE #7–Flip through.

SWAMP THING #14 (ROT)–I’m surprised at how much I’m liking the rot story. Maybe I’m biased because cross-overs are usually brain-dead affairs trying to pump up X-Men sales. But when it’s done in titles with good writers, it seems a cross-over can be fairly interesting. Or maybe it’s because I’m already getting two out of the three titles, so I don’t have to resent shelling out for a bunch of crap I don’t really want.

  4. LAST WEEK:
Book of the week goes to Joe Kubert Presents #1, hands down. Beautiful book, and a great example of cartooning. This doesn’t just feel like ‘Kubert’s last’ it feels like his swan song – a brilliant goodbye from a great.
Aquaman made no sense to me, but I see I missed an issue. Would that make a difference?
New Deadwardians wrapped up leaving me hungry for more (and neither Zombies or Vampires are a particular draw for me).
Haunt #27 was good, although it’s a shame Lady Haunt isn’t going to be an ongoing character. What a great name.
Wolverine And The X-Men, it’s Marvel NOW! debut, and it was good – good, because it was like AVX never happened, it didn’t seem to be tying into anything and the book picked up where it had left of, leaving me to think we can list NOW! with ‘The Heroic Age’ on the list of comic book branding events that don’t mean shit to anyone.
And, in a shock move, I disagree with J_Smitty about Happy #2, I enjoyed it, and think the series will be fun, if not great.
I also read a bunch of Superman and Batman Elseworlds Annuals from 1994 – send copies of them to any big two comic pro who claims ‘comics have never been better’, as these annuals are better than you would expect, and much more fun and entertaining then any annual published this decade (possibly since).
Elliot S Maggin’s Superwoman story in DC Presents Annual 2 1983, and Batman Family #1 smashed most other superhero books I read this week as well. (The girlfriend set me the task of cleaning up my comics room, and we all know you can’t move comics around without a few days re-reading).

    THIS WEEK:
    47 RONIN #1 (OF 5) – I’ll give it a flick, but it’s a highly probably buy.

ACTION COMICS #14 – Is this where Mozza pulls out the twists that will make everyone re-asses this series

BATTLEFIELDS GREEN FIELDS BEYOND PT 1 #1 (OF 6) – I’ll probably wait for trade, even though I want to suport Ennis’ return to quality after Jennifer Blood.

BLACK KISS II #4 (OF 6) – Ever had so much sex it hurt? This book is like that, but without the pleasure of sex proceeding it. I’ll stay with it, but this might be the book that gets City Of Tomorrow out of bottom ranking in my list of HVC’s worthy works.

COLDER #1 (OF 5) – Maybe. I’ll give it a flick through to win me.

DETECTIVE COMICS #14 – Yay! John Layman smashed it last issue. This is the Batman book for people not enamoured by the rest of the nu52.

DIAL H #6 – Yay! The zero issue knocked the pace of the opening arc out of whack, and seemingly gave away the game a bit, so hopefully the second arc gets off to a strong start, as I don’t want this book going away anytime soon.

EARTH 2 #6 – Yay! Robinson worked out his teething issues writing action stories with his Justice League and Superman books – this book is the result. I’m digging it. I wish all the nu52 had played with their concepts/characters this much. Nicola Scott makes it all look lovely and exciting.

    FREELANCERS #1 – I’ll buy that for a dollar.

HARVEST #4 (OF 5) – This series hasn’t lived up to it’s first issue. It’s not bad, it just isn’t that engaging or doing anything interesting.

IRON MAN #1 NOW – As much as I want to mock Marvel Now (I bought 52 books from DC in their first month of relaunch, I’ve bought 3 so far of Marvels offerings), I think this has a chance to be a good book. Land may even shine away from his usual safety nets.

MANHATTAN PROJECTS #7 – Yay! One of the best books going.

STORM DOGS #1 (OF 6) – I’ll give it a flick through. Wish they weren’t calling it ‘Season One’ though. Call it a miniseries or create your own term, you unimaginative fuckers!

BAKUMAN TP VOL 16 – Yay! Easily my favourite current series.

Good work on the election Americans!

  5. 47 RONIN #1 (OF 5) – Definitely worth a look

DAREDEVIL END OF DAYS #2 (OF 8) – Didn’t hate this as much as most people seemed to, and the excessive violence may be a byproduct of the cheapness of death in modern comics (i.e. nobody’s really dead unless you show them completely eviscerated). Hoping for more Sienkievicz painted panels.

FREELANCERS #1 – OK. I’ll buy that for a dollar.

GREEN LANTERN #14 (RISE) – Meant to pull this from my pull list. So I’m stuck with yet another GL crossover issue. Last chance, Green Lantern!

SHADOWMAN (NEW) #1 – The new Valiant line has been remarkably strong, and this looks pretty good anyway

STORM DOGS #1 (OF 6) – Anyone remember the Green Lantern/Phantom Stranger arc in Brave and the Bold from a couple years back? Same creators, and if what they do here is as good as what they did there, it’ll be pretty nifty

SWAMP THING #14 (ROT) – On board for this if not the whole Rot crossover

  6. A small but fun week.

AVENGING SPIDER-MAN #14 – Devil Dinosaur! But not thrilled about the $4.

BATTLEFIELDS GREEN FIELDS BEYOND PT 1 #1 – I have quite liked Ennis’ war books, and liked the just completed ‘hunting Panther’ arc best of all.

DAREDEVIL END OF DAYS #2 – yeesh. A pre-order regret. Like I said, #1 reminded me of Batman: Odyssey but with slightly better dialogue.

    “Better dialogue”

    “That’s what I’m saying”

    “Better. Dialogue.”

“Better Dialogue. Yes. Dialogue that is better.”

“I heard you. I was just checking”

    “Good”

    “Checking is good?”

    “No. I’m good”

    “Good”

    “Fine”

    DIAL H #6 – I am getting behind on these….

FLASH GORDON ZEITGEIST #7 – this book is good enough so let’s just get that out of the way. You are about to read some pretty angry comments. Now, I try and buy altruistically. I don’t have a boycott going like Mr. Jeff Lester or anything, but I try and use my puny buying power as an individual to do some good in the comics marketplace. Things are tough and numbers really matter.

So if I like a book enough to hope to get to read more of it, I will go the extra step and pre-order it. I know that $50 on e-bay does diddly for the creators and that buying shelf copies depresses sales numbers and hampers business planning. So I will order one and pay for it.

I probably had small but happy hopes for this book when I pre-ordered it. BACK IN JANUARY 2012. So I am reviving Hibbs’ ASSHAT OF THE WEEK AWARD. Shame on you Dynamite.

GI COMBAT #6 – Go read JohnK’s review.

MANHATTAN PROJECTS #7 – has been a book I LOVE…and I know Hickman says he is going somewhere, but I kind of lost it last issue. Still, one of my Top 10 books of 2012, easily.

STAR TREK NEXT GENERATION HIVE #2 – I thought that Braga was going to tell a great story. I had no idea what was going on, nor who it was happening to. Ugh. Another pre-order regret.

Comics! They frustrate, they educate and they illuminate!

  7. Popeye #7 has wall-to-wall Roger Langridge art–very pretty, and well worth a pick-up on that basis alone. Maybe he has more time now that Snarked has wrapped up?
