  1. Week Two DCnu always seems the biggest. And the Bat-est!

ALL NEW BATMAN THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD #13 (that’s a lot of Robins. Great book, this)

AVENGERS ORIGINS VISION #1 (Golly Mister! That Ant Man/Wasp book of last week was pretty good stuff! Perhaps a low EXCELLENT. As a child of the Bronze Age, How can I resist the… VISION….!)

BATGIRL #3 (a nice straight up book, which has just a pinch too much angst. And I miss fun Steph)

BATWOMAN #3 (Sad to say, I was VERY meh about #1, but sweet Rao, did #2 set me right. Gorgeous, smart book)

BLACK PANTHER MOST DANGEROUS MAN ALIVE #525 (Liss is winning me over. Interesting how this book is going after Bat aluimni…I adore Francavilla – now just on covers – and think getting one of the better and stylized Bat artists in Martinborough is no accident.)

BTVS SEASON 9 FREEFALL #3 (started strong, and needs to work to keep that going. REALLY needs to work….)

DEMON KNIGHTS #3 (dragon steak, anyone…)

GREEN LANTERN #3 (a GOOD solid book. Which given its near flagship status is a bit of a let-down. Is Johns saving his A-game for Aquaman ?? OUTRAGEOUS! )

JOHN CARTER OF MARS WORLD OF MARS #2 (I may be losing the thread on all these Barsoom books. Good craft here, but even my slavish ERB fanboy is wondering why this book exists)

JURASSIC PARK DANGEROUS GAMES #3 (Aw yeah, Dinos!)

STAR TREK LEGION OF SUPERHEROES #2 (Live Long and Legion! But seriously, this better get somewhere)

TERMINATOR ROBOCOP KILL HUMAN #4 (geez, its been like three months since #3. That last human really hung in there)

So, bat people and imitation bat people, killer androids, weepy androids and DINOS! That’s why I read comics!

  2. The magic of pamphlets!

ALL NEW BATMAN THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD #13
(Best Batman book on the stands! Holy hyperbole, Batman!)
    DEMON KNIGHTS #3
(Not really tickling my fancy despite Jack “KOIBY!!!” Kirby’s The Demon. Still, I was always more of a Call of Cthulhu man myself.)
    FRANKENSTEIN AGENT OF SHADE #3
(Pleasingly whacked out stuff. Be better though if it was actually Frankenstein rather than his monster. And by “Frankenstein” I mean “Peter Cushing”. PETER CUSHING AGENT OF S.H.A.D.E.! Turning back the tide of Evil with understatement, manners and a nice cup of tea. Call me, DC! I can lose YOU money!)
    KIRBY GENESIS SILVER STAR #1
(We bore him!!! Hope he doesn’t bore us!!! The man who had to happen!!! Will it be “burn-out” or “flare-up”!!? Are roller skates evidence than primitive Man was visited by a space-race who appeared to us as Gods?!!? KOIBY!!!)
    PUNISHERMAX #19
(I’m sorry, but seeing the Kingpin banging away at Elektra like the Chief Accountant on top of his PA at the office Xmas party was one of the dumbest things I’ve seen this year.)

Remember, you don’t love someone until you love them enough to give them COMICS!!!

  3. All of a sudden, a small week for me, such that I might sit this one out and come back next Wednesday. But here’s what’s what if I do make an appearance:
BATWOMAN #3 – I had the opposite reaction to Corey(Ottawa), in that I really enjoyed the 1st issue but found myself in a quagmire of meh with the 2nd
DEMON KNIGHTS #3 – I really dig the concept but the first 2 issues were really uneven & left me wanting to like it more than I actually did
GREEN LANTERN #3 – I suspect it might be better if it were called Green Lantern #69, but I’m still entertained
JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY #631 – Wherein this quite good series starts to pull itself up out of the nosedive called Fear Itself, at least I hope
UNCANNY X-FORCE #17 – There’s been a lot of talk on Wait, What? about a Marvel boycott, and this is the series that pulls my own personal semi-boycott of Marvel into sharp relief (basically, I don’t buy Marvel comics that are $3.99 with no extra content, MAX and Icon excepted because presumably they have a smaller market more in line with indy books). But I agree with Jeff Lester that this one delivers the goods enough to justify the price, especially if Jerome Opena is providing his lovely art. But there’s no consistency to Marvel’s pricing, especially now that a lot of the books, including this one, are down to 19 or 20 pages. It seems so random I wonder if the individual editors are actually calling the shots on this. WTF Marvel?
UNWRITTEN #31 – The special issues always pull me back in just when I’m feeling bored, so hopefully the .5 thing will do so. At some point they need to resolve something, rather than keep layering on the mystery

  4. RE: John K(UK)’s PETER CUSHING: AGENT OF SHADE – This would automatically make my pull list. I read somewhere that Cushing liked to do his own stunts and actually worked with directors to get more action into his roles to make things more exciting. The anecdote I remember was that it was his idea in Horror of Dracula to run across the table and dive at the curtain hiding the fatal sunlight instead of just pulling it off the wall. Peter Cushing, BAADAASS!

  5. @James Woodward: Yeah, that scene of swashbuckling Cush action was one of the most awesome things I remember seeing as a child. Peter Cushing was The Statham of the’7os. I remember (O! How the years pass like bubbles in soda pop!) being a bit older and seeing The Cush on some chat-show talking about STAR WARS™ and saying that the boots Grand Moff Tarkin™ wore really pinched his feet so he asked George Lucas™ if he could wear his slippers in close ups. So, every time you see The Cush in close up in STAR WARS™ he’s totally wearing some comfy footwear, probably tartan to boot. Respect The Cushing!

I’m also getting BATWOMAN #3 but I forgot as I was distracted wondering which country J H Williams III is monarch of.

  6. HOT MOMS #15
(The cliffhanger at the end of Hot Moms #14 has me on the edge of my seat. Because the rest of my seat is covered in semen. I don’t want to sit on that part, so– sitting on the edge. Warning– not a great jumping on point. Wait for HOT MOMS #15.1, #15.2 or #15.3 if you want to jump on a Hot Mom. The spin-off, SECRETLY HOT MOMS, was underwhelming, though).

  7. A small week like this is just what I needed.
And to run contrary to Corey, it’s Weeks 1 & 3 that feel like the big DCU weeks to me

    BATMAN AND ROBIN #3
DC COMICS PRESENTS BATMAN BAD #1
    DEMON KNIGHTS #3
    FRANKENSTEIN AGENT OF SHADE #3
GARTH ENNIS JENNIFER BLOOD #6 – It’s over. Thank god, it’s over.
KIRBY GENESIS SILVER STAR #1 – I’ll check this out, but I do wish all this Kirby stuff had stuck to one book for a while longer. Is waiting for the launch mini to end before spinning it into six different titles too much to ask? Did no one learn anything from First Wave?
    LEGION LOST #3
    MISTER TERRIFIC #3
RESURRECTION MAN #3 – I’ve not read #2 of this or Legion, despite having them… better get onto that!
STAR TREK LEGION OF SUPERHEROES #2 (OF 6) – Missed #1, so this depends on that being in the store as well. I’ve heard this is not so great
    SUPERBOY #3
VERTIGO RESURRECTED MY FAITH IN FRANKIE #1

CHRONICLES OF WORMWOOD LAST BATTLE TP – I’ll wait for a sale before getting this, I think. The other two volumes were ok, but I can’t bring myself to read this in the same week as the end of Jennifer Blood. My Ennis love is strong, but he’s really testing me at the moment.

  8. I expect on Earth-UK “PETER CUSHING: AGENT OF SHADE” far outsells Ultimate Comics the Ultimates of Ultimatums. But I haven’t lived on Earth-UK since 1867.

And Abhay needs some kind of special Eisner Award for taking the “dare I…no I musn’t…!” in my brain and printing it in electrons that, lo, the seven of our eyes have seen. I bow to the master. Well played, sir. (PS: ew!)

And while I note a level of contrariness to my own selections this week, it is a shadow of the treatment being heaped on Adam Smith and Macroeconomics on some of the other Savage Threads. #OccupyMetropolis !

But if comics fans cared about the 99 percent, we’d all read Spawn and Deadpool! Bazinga! I’m here all week folks, try the veal.

So yeah: COMICS, THEY DON’T COST 35 CENTS, BUT I STILL BUY ‘EM WITH MONEY I MAKE EXCHANGING MY LABOR AT MARKET VALUES TO BENEFIT THE OWNERS OF THE CAPITAL!

  9. I had no idea the next THE BOYS trade is out. It’s always a crap shoot with this series. It will either be great or it will be awful. But Ennis is my favorite (I’m currently rereading his Punisher MAX run from the beginning) so I’ll stick around.

ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN – I’d decided to buy the first arc in serial form to support Miles, but the $3.99 price tag is KILLING me. Not because of the expense so much as the value for that expense – I haven’t read a Bendis series in years and I see he’s still in love with sound of his own dialogue. Story be damned. The art is lovely, though.

BATWOMAN – “The art is lovely” multiplied by JH Williams.
