Arriving 12/04/13

This week could be characterized as the “eye of the storm.” With holidays surrounding us, a lot of the best books every month have shifted around some to accommodate, but we still get some great things in what is an otherwise small week. Garth Ennis’ post apocalyptic story of house pets, “Rover Red Charlie,” debuts this week, along with Brubaker and Epting’s second issue of “Velvet.” If those don’t interest you than follow the cut and see what you do have to be excited about!

  1. my pulls
BURN THE ORPHANAGE #2 – The first one was a pretty fun beat em up homage with a fun art style and somewhat crazed ending. It didn’t push the action concept nearly as far as it could have, but I enjoyed my time with it.

FEARLESS DEFENDERS #12 – RIP. Amazed it lasted this long though.

HINTERKIND #3 – on the fence. will let the first story play out. I feel like I just read the inverse of this with Sweet Tooth.

TRILLIUM #5 – still enjoying this and am really curious to see where it goes. This is such a “small” drama but told well. I think I like Lemire when he’s confined a bit.

VELVET #2 – the end of the first issue threw me for a loop. I’m eager to find out what kind of book we’ll actually be reading and I hope we get that info in this issue.

  2. AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #700.1–I think Peter Parker is back in these, right? I’ll probably pick ‘em up.

FEARLESS DEFENDERS #12–Last issue, alas. It’s been a fun title. Was especially glad to see Clea used again, hopefully she’ll turn up somewhere now. Why not a “Dr. Strange and Clea” mini?

GRINDHOUSE DOORS OPEN AT MIDNIGHT #3 (OF 8)–Got the first two, this one gets a thumb-through with a bias towards buy.

SIX GUN GORILLA #6 (OF 6)–Fun series, well-paced, interested to see how it ends.

SWAMP THING #26–Still enjoying this pretty well, my last DC title (though I may add Harley Quinn or the new Metal Men, we’ll see).

  3. yep, rather more “eye of the storm” than ‘eye of the tiger” is right.

CATALYST COMIX #6 – winding down on this fun odball anthology.

FOX #2 – another fun book. Not sure a market exists for straight-up, continuity-free, done-in-ones, but we will see.

GREEN ARROW #26 – had picked up steam with the Vertigo fight (and GORGEOUS art by Sorentino!) but this is a book where, once again, pretty much nothing ever happens. PROBABTION.

GRINDHOUSE DOORS OPEN AT MIDNIGHT #3 – jumping on for “The Prison Ship Antares.”

    HINTERKIND #3 – Vertigo, why can’t I quit you?

JUDGE DREDD #14 – thinking about dropping and just sticking with the UK mags. But that Cursed Earth Amusement Park bought some reprive…

LEGENDS OF RED SONJA #2 – I almost think short stories are how Sonja works best.

SECRET AVENGERS #12 – Nick Spencer, Ales Kot and Butch Guice? You bet. I’d have to think if I’m getting any other Marvel books right now….

SHADOW NOW #3 – WHO KNOWS….whether the Shadow can work without the 1940s?

SIX GUN GORILLA #6 – delivers on the two things it promises.

STAR TREK KHAN #3 – loved #1 and was totally turned off by #2. Death blimps? Bad map graphics? A stoopid plot from super genuises? Make or break time.

SWAMP THING #26 – wow. Last issue was some kind of awesome. keep it up gang!

TERMINATOR SALVATION FINAL BATTLE #1 – JMS tries his hand. Let the flame-wars begin.

VELVET #2 – the BOOK TO BEAT this week. Loved, loved, loved #1.

Ghosted, Fever Ridge and Storm Dogs were all great reads, and would make good gifts too. Check’em out!

  4. CATALYST #6- I like that the Amazing Grace story is at the forefront, but I’m bummed it will go to the back of the book next month. I have a feeling the Frank Wells and Agents of Change stories will finish big and Amazing Grace will go quietly.

DEADPOOL #20- Back in time again. Should be thoroughly enjoyable and I’d recommend this issue to anyone looking for a Marvel send-up. Better than MARVEL NOW WHAT? for laffs, I’d wager.

MICHAEL AVON OEMING’S VICTORIES #7- Lot of loose plot ends, but I don’t mind. Oeming’s superhero world is chaotic and kinetic and violent.

    REGULAR SHOW #7- Yuup

    TRILLIUM #5- Yep

YA #13- I miss Kid Loki. Seeing him go from a child to ‘stronger, smarter, and sexier’ than ever in one panel was more awkward than puberty.

  5. @Corey: I did want to check out Storm Dogs, but there were never copies on the racks. What’s it like tonally/stylistically?

  6. FEARLESS DEFENDERS #12–Another of my favorite superhero titles this year bites the big one. My unhappiness stems from seeing that the title’s commercial failure will act as disincentive for other female-dominant titles. At least it goes out with a great cover from Mark Brooks.

HELLBOY IN HELL #5–Hellboy. Mignola. ‘Nuff said.

PROPHET #41–Weird European-style comics SF without the frontal female nudity.

ROVER RED CHARLIE #1–Garth Ennis doing a book with dog protagonists? When do the three dogs learn to operate machine guns and blow away zombies?

VELVET #2–Ed Brubaker spy stuff. Definitely worth a look.

YOUNG AVENGERS #13–Another favorite Marvel comic coming to an end. *Sigh*

  7. I’m not through my whole stack yet, but Green Lantern and Earth II are done for me. GL might turn out to be good once the new creative team gets a chance to get out from under the huge rock Johns put on the book (and the concept), but Earth II is just…bleh. It’s like the new creators took over without ANY understanding of what the book was about.

    Mike
