  1. LAST WEEK:
Bakuman rocked it – it went meta. Due to a character not seen since early volumes, the leads go back and re-read early volumes of their work to see if there’s loose plot ends they’d forgotten about which could generate new stories. (ie. I’d guess exactly what was done to create this story)
I read All New X-Men #1-3. #1 is horribly written but by #3 there’s hope for it all. I’d hate to read this book without Immomen.
Avengers #1 was good but weird. Like Hickman was playing it like a comic-book-Tarrantino, riffing on classic comics, but all the classics he’s using were written by Warren Ellis a decade ago. (And called Stormwatch and Authority).

    THIS WEEK:

AVENGERS ARENA #1 – I get it, Hunger Games was a smash hit so now’s the perfect time to rip Battle Royale! Kidding aside, it’s a strong concept and great for a superhero story, especially if they dare to keep it finite.

CHANGE #1 (OF 4) – Maybe. The art looks good, but I’m rather sour on Ales Kot after the rather dreadful, War Children. That said, WC was a dud but a more interesting dud than others will dare, so there’s hope for him.

CONAN THE BARBARIAN #11 – Keeps on killing.

CREEP #4 – I wish this was getting more attention.

DEMON KNIGHTS #15 – I got Cornell’s new novel yesterday. It’s entertaining so far.

FANTASTIC FOUR #2 – So with part 3 of Fraction’s multi-book epic I’m hoping characters do something.

MASSIVE #7 – I think Wood needs to really land this arc and generate excitement, because a lot of people sound bored with this series.

POINT OF IMPACT #3 (OF 4) – I’m waiting for all four issues before reading.

SAUCER COUNTRY #10 – We going to start a dead-pool? I’ll say #16. Wish it weren’t so, but can’t see how this will last.

    GRANDVILLE BETE NOIRE HC
GRENDEL OMNIBUS TP VOL 02 LEGACY
KAMANDI LAST BOY ON EARTH OMNIBUS HC VOL 02 – Thank god I’ve got a B’day soon after x-mas.

  2. Ben – thanks for keeping your hope alive. If you buy Change #1 and you won’t like it, email me at aleskotsays at gmail and I’ll paypal you back the money back. I’ll also send you #1 of my first ongoing series, Zero, for free when the time comes.

    This week I’m aiming for:

ADVENTURE TIME COVER SHOWCASE ONE SHOT
    BATTLEFIELDS #2 (OF 6)
    CONAN THE BARBARIAN #11
    CREEP #4
    CROSSED BADLANDS #19
    IRON MAN #4 NOW
    MASSIVE #7
    WALKING DEAD #105

    GRANDVILLE BETE NOIRE HC
JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY TP VOL 04 MANCHESTER GODS
    PARKER THE HUNTER SC

    …and eventually Kamandi as well.

  3. LAST WEEK!

    ACTION COMICS #15
Man, the odds are stacking up against Clark.

    DIAL H #7
This is the most super powered wood louse book you’ll read all year!

    EARTH 2 #7
Ah yes, good. Robinson is making the secondary characters more interesting than the primaries. Sound familiar?

    HELLBOY IN HELL #1
This was really very different from BPRD. You get the sense of the weight of serial history here and I wasn’t overly enamored. There were many redeeming qualities to be sure and I will be getting the series.

    INVINCIBLE #98
I don’t think Kirkman was kidding with the “everyone dies” tag line. We may be heading towards post civilization territory. It’s frankly pretty honest in regards to most books about capes these days. It’s rarely about “the little people” so let’s just get rid of them.

    WORLDS FINEST #7
Wow, Levitz has a good handle on Damian Wayne. Like, really good.

JACK KIRBYS FOURTH WORLD OMNIBUS TP VOL 04
OH COOL – HUNGER DOGS IS ACTUALLY IN THIS!

    ARCHER & ARMSTRONG (NEW) #5
Good stuff, buddy comedy done well.

    BATMAN #15 (DOTF)
I just…don’t know. After reading Inc. last week and literally feeling my heart skittering around in my chest while the worst things are happening on every page I haven’t felt the fear he’s going for. The first issue had it. The second had a “pause” feeling.

    BLOODSHOT (ONGOING) #6
Robert Evans voice “It’s basically a road picture!”

    CONAN THE BARBARIAN #11
Watching the wanks in the letter column go apoplectic over Conan getting down while captured was worth the price of the last issue.

    SAUCER COUNTRY #10
Re-invigorated by a read through of my purchased but not read back log. DC needs to let Cornell have at least the space for a truncated conclusion.

    SUPERBOY #15
I can’t emphasize enough how much RB Silva means to this book. That said, a change in the inking style last issue completely torpedoed it for me. If I pick this thing up and those weird f’ing squiggles are left in the center of figures like some child’s version of a topographical map this is getting dropped. DROPPED. How’s that for bold art criticism fellow Whatnauts?

It’s a filthy Brandon Graham Christmas everyone! Happy reading!

    BATGIRL #15 (DOTF)
    BATMAN #15 (DOTF)
    CONAN THE BARBARIAN #11
    FANTASTIC FOUR #2 NOW
FRANKENSTEIN AGENT OF SHADE #15 (ROT)
    SAUCER COUNTRY #10

  5. AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #699.1

BATGIRL #15 (DOTF)–Gail Simone is a trooper. This is the second event in a row Batgirl’s been a part of, and she just continues to turn in solid superhero comics, advancing her own story where she can. Nothing flashy here, but I wonder if she’s not the last true professional writer in comics.

BATMAN #15 (DOTF)–This is pretty good. The Joker playing up his role as jester to “King” Batman makes a lot of sense, in an insane way.

CONAN THE BARBARIAN #11–This book has got me more hyped about Conan than I’ve felt since I was 15. I even got out the REH books the other day so I could go back and read some of the stories. Like Lipman said, “keeps on killing.”

FANTASTIC FOUR #2 NOW–First issue did not excite me. Unless #2 is excellent, I’m dropping after this issue. Thanks to Allred, I’m still on board for FF.

FRANKENSTEIN AGENT OF SHADE #15 (ROT)–Happy to follow through to the end. It’s a nice little comic, but I won’t miss it after its cancellation. 16 or so issues is about right for a title like this. I just hope it really wraps up.

SAUCER COUNTRY #10–On the hand, I’d be sorry to see this one go, just as it’s getting warmed up. Was all the talk of this one being cancelled in the comments above just speculation? God, I hope not.

WALKING DEAD #105–This has been hitting so hard lately.

  6. Um, Nick…

    http://www.wired.com/geekmom/2012/12/gail-simone-off-batgirl/

  7. Lots under the tree this week:

ARCHER & ARMSTRONG (NEW) #5 – heh. Had a very strong start, but I somehow missed #4 and didn’t notice. That’s not a good sign.

BATGIRL #15 – yep, the last true pro.

BATMAN #15 – quite liked last week.

BATMAN AND ROBIN #15 – looking forward to Damian, actually.

BATTLEFIELDS #2 – nice war book, of a fairly awful war.

    BEFORE WATCHMEN DR MANHATTAN #3
BEFORE WATCHMEN RORSCHACH #3 – remember when the promise was one a week? This is the second week with mutliples, and solicits for some #5s are cancelled which means we may have a skip MONTH. And yet, have we had a DC editor get tossed for failing to deliver?

CHANGE #1 – Nice to have Mr. Kot here!

CLONE #2 – good story hook, and I’ll give it a chance to get going.

CONAN THE BARBARIAN #11 – I can totally hear the lamentations of their women.

MASSIVE #7 – REALLY think this is a strong series. Loving it.

POINT OF IMPACT #3 – good mystery so far.

SAUCER COUNTRY #10 – Liking it, and sometimes loving it. Never, EVER bored with it. I am afraid, esp after events of this month, that a book which is #225, and selling 7k copies (2k fewer than HELLBLZER) is not long for the world, however. Which says more about current Vertigo than about this book. And this is why we can’t have nice things.

SHERLOCK HOLMES LIVERPOOL DEMON #1 – nice moody art, and hopefully a smart story.

WALKING DEAD #105 – Thelonius_Nick is right. And so was Carl for choosing the really big gun because it looked cool.

WINTER SOLDIER #13 – was a nice bit of something different, so it’s gone too. Loved the sketchy Guice art.

KAMANDI LAST BOY ON EARTH OMNIBUS HC – aw yeah, KIRBY!

SPACE 1999 AFTERSHOCK & AWE – probably! A reprint of the Gray Morrow books, or new? The website isn’t particularly helpful, but I’ll likely buy either way.

and those Brandon Graham books with the naughty titles too, if Her Majesty’s Customs has let them through.

Just scrolling back up for typos, notice that is really a pretty good mix: some sci-fi, some mystery, some war, some alt, some capes. Its easy to be mad at “comics,” and Yoda knows I rant with the best of them, but there really is plenty of good out there.

    Happy Holidays fellow Whatnaughts!

  8. “I wonder if [Simone]’s not the last true professional writer in comics.”

So we’re already starting with this? It’s only a matter of time now before we start seeing her Batgirl run spoken of as the definitive superhero run of the last quarter century.

For the record, in interviews Gail always spoke of what Snyder was doing in glowing terms, so I doubt she minded doing the events. She even did an issue (Annual?) in which she tied into the Owl stuff months after it was over, which suggests that she just felt like going back to it.

  9. I’ll be getting AGE OF BRONZE #32. What’s it been, like 2 years since the last issue? Good time to re-read a few issues, I guess. And from what I can tell, we’ll be getting some awesome Troilus and Cressida action this time around. I love this book — just wish it came out more often.

  10. @Ales Kot – Awwwww shit. Sorry mate, that can’t have been fun to read.
I’d feel I was patronizing you if I tried to backtrack, so instead I’ll go the other way and say I didn’t just dislike WC, I actively disliked it in a way that made me swear at the book a few times whilst reading and then threw it across the room when I’d finished, which makes it more fun than most other new comics that I try where I end up so bored that the comic slips through my fingers whilst I enter a waking-coma and dream of the comics from my youth (at least they had hologram covers!).

Very classy of you to make the offer you did, but I’ll have to decline. Before I saw your response I saw some of the online previews and Greg Burgas’ review, so Change #1 had already become a probable purchase, and if I don’t like it once I’ve read it that’s on me, not you.
Same with Zero – I’ll probably check it out, and if I do that you’ve earned your money regardless of how I feel after reading it.

  11. Oh, that’s ok. No need to backtrack, I value openness and do my best to not base my sense of self-worth on what other people think. I laughed out loud when I read you threw the comic across the room! I think that’s awesome and hilarious. Just say whatever it is you want to say and I’ll do my best to take something from it and hopefully become a stronger writer & human being.

Please let me know what you thought of Change if you decide it’s worth a response.

  12. Eh, it was ok.

Who am I kidding? That was pretty damn good comics right there! A+
I can’t imagine a comic I’ve gone into recently with more trepidation after being caught out here, but I not only enjoyed it, I was absorbed. Laughed out loud the first time at page 4, panel 2, and it wasn’t the last. Swore out loud in appreciation at a few layouts/sequences. Morgan Jeske – holy shit! Have you guys been making comics together for decades in secret?
I still feel I’m underselling the book! Needless to say, I’m on board, and Zero is definitely going on my list as well.
    Keep it up!

  13. @J_Smitty: If DC hasn’t fix the dreadful presentation of THE HUNGER DOGS from the hardcover version of the Omnibus, this is far from the optimal way to read it. As Evanier’s text explains, THE HUNGER DOGS was originally created as a comic one-shot inked by Royer, and then was expanded into a graphic novel after DC editorial decided the one-issue story felt confusing and choppy.

To satisfy fans who’ve demanded the “original” version, they’ve restored the original pages within the context of the lengthened story. The problem is, the new pages were differently proportioned and inked / finished by Theakston, who tweaked the Royer pages to make a consistent whole. 4WO Vol. 4 systematically *undoes* that work so you end up with a story that distractingly switches inking styles and proportions, sometimes on a page-by-page basis. In short, it becomes a difficult-to-read mess, feeding right into THE HUNGER DOGS’ already dodgy reputation. Which is a shame, because it’s MUCH better than rumor tends to indicate.

I finally broke down and found a cheap copy of the original GN on eBay — to replace the one I sold, partly to finance my purchase of the 4th World Omnibus! Caveat emptor!
