  1. AVENGERS #2 NOW–Geez, I haven’t even gotten to my copy of #1 yet. That #2 is already out makes it likely I won’t even bother with this series, no matter how good it is. And it’s a $3.99 one, isn’t it? Fuck it.

CAPTAIN AMERICA #2 NOW–On the other, I did get to this, and liked it a lot. “Planet Cap,” as it were. Nice 70s science-fiction vibe. Very promising, I’ll pick this up and likely add to my pull list.

    DAREDEVIL #21–Still good.

FF #2 NOW–I’m dropping Fantastic Four but keeping this. Allred art, interesting team and concept.

HAPPY #3 (OF 4)–I think I see Morrison is going with this, but he makes it interesting enough I still want to go there with him. Then again, he could still turn it all inside out in the last two issues. Not the best thing of his I’ve ever read, but not at all bad.

INDESTRUCTIBLE HULK #2 NOW–First issue was decent, at $2.99 it would be a likely add to my pull list. At $3.99 I’ll pick it up but I doubt it’ll be a permament addition. Also, isn’t having another character guest-starring in only your second issue kind of a sign of desperateness?

NUMBER 13 #1–I’ll give it a look-through at the store.

    SAGA #8–Hell, yes.

SWORD OF SORCERY #3–Still getting this off the rack. I wish it were Beowulf with the lead and Amethyst with the back-up (did I say that last week?). Solid, fun, non super-hero comics.

WITCH DOCTOR MALPRACTICE #2 (OF 6)–This title really fills the erudite funny horror need in my comics reading.

  2. I don’t read a lot of Marvel books but every one is shipping this week. It’s going to be a wallet-buster.

  3. What a week!

AMERICAS GOT POWERS #4 – gorgeous, and never quite conventional, despite the title.

AVENGERS #2 – Buying on the rack. I agree with Mssrs. Lester and MacMillan that its the best David Kraft/Herbe Trimpe book you never read. The solicits for 5/6 really underlined that, and now 7/8 lock in that idea. Which will have me bidding adieu to it…..

BLACK BEETLE NIGHT SHIFT #0 – I love pulp. I love Francavilla. I am very happy with this.

    COMEBACK #2 – neat hook.

DAREDEVIL #21 – went Full Cray-Cray last issue. Here’s hoping Waid reigns this one in a bit, as off the chain is not really his forté.

FF #2 – and that was a great opener, with stellar Allred art. I miss zombie Gwen already…

HAWKEYE #6 – is this weekly now? Hourly?

HELLBLAZER #298 – aw crap, these last few are just going to make me sad.

INDESTRUCTIBLE HULK #2 – maybe Yu and Waid need to synch up their story telling just a bit more (WORLD’S MOST DRAMATIC DINER EVAR!), but I thought #1 was a bit of alright.

JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY #647 – Sif! You’re damn right.

JUDGE DREDD #2 – LOVED this.

MASKS #2 – Jeff/Graeme: you guys totally lost me in trying to deconstruct the zeitgeist of the implied backstory of this rather uncomplicated pulp setting. I guess I just took the tropes of pulp as ‘assumed to be in evidence’, and got on with reading what was GORGEOUS work by Ross. And without some of their weirder colour lime green, orange and mustard yellow hues he has been relying on lately.

MULTIPLE WARHEADS ALPHABET TO INFINITY #3 – aw yeah.

NOWHERE MEN #2 – probably not long for it, but really liked the initial set up, followed by the break. Nice bit that. And the last page twist was okay too. But I might prefer MANHATTAN PROJECTS for my ‘scientists gone mad!’ fix.

SAGA #8 – “damn cute kid”. This was stunning last issue

STAR TREK NEXT GENERATION HIVE #3 – issue 2 fixed everything that was wrong with issue 1, so I am back. Dropping was futile.

SUPERGIRL #15 – I have been singing the praises of Asrar here…, but it needs to be said: I probably go when he does.

SWORD OF SORCERY #3 – The Thelonious one makes a neat point. Wonder what the long terms plans are, Anethyst with a rotating back end, or two rotating storylines? Either is fine with me. The second thing I would say is my 7 year old looked at the cover and thought she would totally love this book. I do like it quite a bit, but it aint for her.

THOR GOD OF THUNDER #3 NOW – just got through 1, so of course I have missed 2 which came out, I dunno, 12 hours after #1. Hopping on with #3, but Marvel….you are costing yourselves sales here by jamming the schedule.

My LCS also shows me getting MARA #1 (woot!), BIONIC WOMAN #6 (now dropped) and BEFORE WATCHMEN NITE OWL #4 (ending). So check your local listings.

    ———–
And BATLELFIELDS #2 was my pick for last week. Great book. MASSIVE and WALKING DEAD rounded out the podium for a very strong and enjoyable week!

Too early for ‘end of year thoughts’, but what I think is notable (for me at least), is that I haven’t bought FOUR Marvel books in a month in all of 2012, and here I have four in a week. Maybe a good sign? Maybe transitory? It remains to be seen in 2013, as three issues a month per title is going to flood me away.

And I wonder how many are like ‘me’: I make it to the shop every week, buy signifcantly, but have not always the time to read everything in six days. If I ‘miss’ an issue now, it’s easier to press ahead. Which after all, is what we all used to do in the spinner rack days!

  4. LAST WEEK:
Changes #1 was my book of the week, and not just because the author seems to check here! Really good.
Avengers Arena was pretty bland and yuck – Mick Hucknell is a scary villain, but introducing the plot with “I got the idea from a YA novel” is lazy, as was the rest of it.
I’m dropping Fantastic Four and FF, three issues and the best they got was average. I’ve got plenty of other books with Allred doing better stuff.
Creep, The Massive and Saucer Country were all very good to excellent. I enjoyed the shit out of them.

    THIS WEEK:

ALL NEW X-MEN #4 – Maybe. #1 was awful, #2 was ok, but #3 was kinda good. There’s an outside chance he’ll land this. Immonen makes up for a lot, although I’m nowhere near as taken with Bendis’ X-Men as some folks I know.

AMERICAS GOT POWERS #4 – How good is that Bryan Hitch interview on CBR? Hilarious. Good to hear why this one’s been delayed – all the right reasons.

AVENGERS #2 – I’ll give it a go. #1 was only alright, I thought, much like All New X-Men the art seems to be lifting it in people’s opinions.

BLACK BEETLE NIGHT SHIFT #0 – Oh yes.

CAPTAIN AMERICA #2 – I’ll be deciding on whether this title is a keeper from this issue.

DAREDEVIL #21 – Still the best Marvel book right NOW!

    HAPPY #3 (OF 4) – I like it.

HAUNT #28 – This book has been revving up the crazy, so I’m hoping it explodes this ish.

    HAWKEYE #6 – Aja’s back!

INDESTRUCTIBLE HULK #2 – I echo the call that this should be a $2.99 book. But then again, so should Captain America. Team books are ok at a higher price as you get more characters.

MULTIPLE WARHEADS ALPHABET TO INFINITY #3 (OF 4) – Graham’s on a Marvel schedule? Or is he just giving us an x-mas present? Or has it been a month already?

NUMBER 13 #1 – I really enjoyed the #0 of this. Great weird kids surviving in a post-apocalyptic world type-thing, with really cutesy art. There’s a lot of potential here.

SAGA #8 – I guess I better grab it fast rather than wait for a second printing.

WITCH DOCTOR MALPRACTICE #2 (OF 6) – The zombie phenomenon is worth it because it funds this book, and this comic is where all the imagination missing from uninspiring zombie comics and films has ended up.

WOLVERINE AND X-MEN #22 – Poor Bendis, Hitch and Medina say his scripts are boring to draw, and then his x-books pale in comparison to Jason Aaron’s. This is my second favourite Marvel book.

THOR GOD OF THUNDER #3 – I really should put on some Zepplin when reading this one.

  5. FF – Allred is my most favoritist comic talent ever.

  6. Thank god for JSA Liberty Files: The Whistling Skull!

  7. An EMPOWERED special? It’s a Christmas miracle!

  8. ARCHER & ARMSTRONG (NEW) #5
Good issue. Really nice kinetic fight art from fill-in Lupacchino. Little to no drop off.

    BLOODSHOT (ONGOING) #6
Another propulsive Valiant issue. Exceedingly bloody, but you know, what else would you expect by this point? I went into this issue thinking this might be my last here but Duane set the hook with the last page. A good cliffhanger that tells us Bloodshot won’t get his answers but this will move him forward and into tighter alignment with the rest of Valiant proper.

A quick word. $3.99 is dangerous ground Valiant. Very dangerous. At 3.99 I hope you keep the line small.

    BATMAN #15 (DOTF)
I was bored by this. I think a problem inherent in multi-issue tie-ins is the sense that the central book really becomes a placeholder when it should be the ONLY book that is essential. The large supporting cast whinges about Bruce’s lack of care / concern which sets up all their individual struggles in their own books. Bruce is stubborn. Jock’s back-up artwork was really beautiful in it’s usual way. The shot of Joker from behind as he drops a joker gas pellet into Riddler’s cell was an especially nice choice. I will say that the back-ups in Batman have, on the whole, worked much better and more tightly than those in Action Comics.

    CONAN THE BARBARIAN #11
    DECLAN!

    SAUCER COUNTRY #10
    Purchased, on the read pile.

    SUPERBOY #15
Three inkers – Three pencillers – none of them are RB Silva. I will say that Roger Robinson (I think) has some really cool proto Simonson style. Really thick line that has a rough, almost charcoal quality. I will look for more of his work.

KAMANDI LAST BOY ON EARTH OMNIBUS HC VOL 02
May wait for the paperback…although I do have vol 1 in HC…

PERVERTS OF THE UNKNOWN GN (NEW PTG) (A)
PILLOW FIGHT GN (NEW PTG) VOL 01 (A)
SOLD OUT! I’m not a previews guy so this came as a surprise. Very cool to see people flocking to Graham as a “name”

    THIS WEEK!

    BPRD 1948 #3 (OF 5)
BPRD HELL ON EARTH #102 RETURN O/T MASTER #5 (OF 5)
Having just read Hellboy in Hell I get the feeling Mignola actually has aspects of producing these books that he prefers. Looking forward to these.

    HARBINGER (ONGOING) #7
Harbinger has been the most difficult “Art Swallow” I’ve had of the Valiant line so far. It just gets goddamn sloppy. This is the kind of thing 3.99 makes it hard to ignore.

JSA LIBERTY FILES THE WHISTLING SKULL #1 (OF 6)
Hey everybody! Tony Harris! Man, he’s been quiet. I wonder what…oh…um…okay.

MULTIPLE WARHEADS ALPHABET TO INFINITY #3 (OF 4)
Graham overload. Last issue’s travelogue was such a nice wandering miasma of style.

    SAGA #8
More Giant Alien Ogre testicles? Who can say?

    WONDER WOMAN #15
Yay, f*ck nuDC story continuity. Wonder Woman is burying the gristle missle with Superman? The only “world” that hangs together is Earth 2? This whole thing wasn’t just a huge poorly thought out stunt?

    X-O MANOWAR (ONGOING) #8
I’ll admit I didn’t see it coming that the real characters of this arc would be The Vine. That said, it was a poor, poor choice to put their dialogue in italicized black balloons.

    Happy Reading! Merry Christmas!
