Not too much to entertain me over my x-mas break!
Good thing e-bay was kind, and I got a big box full of Superman Annuals and anniversary issues (and a few othr Batman and various DC one’s) I ordered on Sat (best thing to wake up to hungover ever!).
Probably shouldn’t have ordered quite as many of the elseworlds annuals that I did, but when I was 11-12, they looked awesome and I couldn’t afford them all – so now old me must pay the price for young me’s love of heroes looking different to normal.

  2. “Axe Cop” and “Reid Fleming: World’s Toughest Milkman” both have trades released for the first time, on the same day? It’s like some kind of SuperChristmas! Is this what Kwanzaa is?

  3. Get well soon, Mr. Hibbs!

    AMERICAN VAMPIRE #10
(Rafael Albuquerque(sp?) could probably do with a couple of issues to catch his artistic breath I feel but this remains an interesting and pulpy romp.)

    BATMAN INCORPORATED #2
(Really enjoyed last issue despite the fact that Catwoman appears to have had a fat man’s arse transplanted onto her chest.)

    DC UNIVERSE LEGACIES #8
(When I was a kid in The Long Long Ago I’d buy comics from ye olde spinney-racke. There was little rhyme or reason to what washed up on our shores, so you’d just enjoy what you got and kind of infer the wider context of any given issue. This was a surprisingly enjoyable mental exercise and this comic kind of replicates that. Mem-or-reeees! Um. Cough. Jerry Ordway is under-rated isn’t he?)

    HELLBLAZER #274
(Milligan on Hellblazer is just so…satisfying. Yes, that’s it…satisfying.)

    INCOGNITO BAD INFLUENCES #2
    (Nice art.)

    SIXTH GUN #7
(Probably a great Jumping On Point here, in case anyone was interested in sampling this well-done frolic blending The Old West and the supernatural.)

    USAGI YOJIMBO #134
(A constant source of delight and entertainment.)

Comics! They don’t care if you have flu – they are relentless!

And since my comments are sporadic may I just take this opportunity to send very special seasonal greetings to all The Savage Critics and all the wonderful Commenters who together have entertained and educated me throughout the year. I thank you, I thank you all. Heck, you all look good to ME!

  4. Lip,

Nice! Some of those annuals stand up, they really do!

Over at Colin’s blog I blubbered on at some length about a random elseworlds Superman Annual cranked out by Priest / MD Bright that told a better version of Straczynski’s Earth One in probably about 1/100th of the deadline time.

    Happy re-discovery Christmas!

  5. John Pontoon: My reaction was remarkably similar to yours, though not as hilarious. Well played, sir!

  6. Just a quick plug: If you have any fondness for NAMOR as a character, issue #5 is a self-contained issue looking at the different sides of his personality, which also sets up a supporting character for the future. And no vampires.

    Merry Xmas, all!

    -Stuart

  7. FANTASTIC FOUR #586
(One issue to go, and I’m not really being swept up in this. Sorry)

    HELLBLAZER #274
(and one issue to go here too… THIS makes my month, however. Expert story-telling)

    ZATANNA #8
    (Chris. Chiang)

  8. Smitty,

I’m pretty sure I got the Priest/Bright one – it’s either a Elseworlds or Year One annual, right?

The only Elseworlds one’s I consciously didn’t get were the Lobo, Catwoman and Teen Titans one’s – all looked waaaay too 90’s – then again, so are some of the one’s I got!
(Humberto Ramos on a Steel story, set during the time of slavery???)

The main draw for me was the post-apocalyptic DCU two-parter from Adventures Of Superman, followed up in Superboy – only ever got part one as a kid!

The unexpected delight so far (as I’ve barely dented the pile I got) has been the early 2000’s Superman anniversary (25,50, 75, 00’s) issues I got.
There’s one written by Stuart Immomen and Mark Millar which was solid, Adventures Of Superman #600 by Joe Casey, and Action Comics #775 and #800 by Joe Kelly – bloody fantastic stuff!
Think I may be going online again to check out more of that era!

(Action Comics #550 was a rip-off though – the cover promises the world exploding, but it only almost explodes! Damn you Julie Schwartz!)

  9. “The main draw for me was the post-apocalyptic DCU two-parter from Adventures Of Superman, followed up in Superboy – only ever got part one as a kid!”

    YES!

  10. Happy holiday, Hibbs…. And get better!
