  1. “Why are there three “Green Lantern” comics in a single week?”

Because Geoff Johns is exempt from the deadline pressures put on all DC creators not in management?

(I’d be curious, what percentage of late “New 52″ books have had Johns, Lee or Didio in the credits?)

This weeks books, I think I’ll get the BOOKS OF MAGIC hardcover. Surprised it took them this long to put out a decent edition of that book. Way to strike while the iron is hot.

And if I were made of money I’d get that MAD ARTIST EDITION.

  2. LAST WEEK!

ARCHER & ARMSTRONG (NEW) #6 Sold Out

BATMAN #16 (DOTF) Urgh. This was A) Pretty gross and B) Pretty dumb. The one redeeming panel, for me, was Batman’s reaction shot to the flaming horse coming down the hallway.

BLACK BEETLE #1 (OF 4) NO WAY OUT Sold Out

BLOODSHOT (ONGOING) #7 Valiant has done a very nice job incorporating all the aspects of a shared universe without making me feel as though I’m missing out by not reading EVERY book.

BPRD 1948 #4 (OF 5) The art’s a real standout. This ish felt a little bit like a time waster but it was pleasant enough company.

CONAN THE BARBARIAN #12 Good choppy, choppy here. A little less enthused about the loss of the baby but let’s be honest here. At this phase of his career, it would be tough for Conan to find a sitter.

    SAGA #9
    Man, Lying Cat. Great.

    SUPERBOY #16
So, Silva wasn’t back but I’ve gotta say his backups were ok this ish. I think DeFalco’s remedy for not knowing how to write the Nu52 versions of every hero was thrilling in its simplicity. “I’ll write them like they’re the old versions.” CLAP…CLAP…CLAP.

ONE TRICK RIP OFF DEEP CUTS HC Sold Out – on Order.

    THIS WEEK

    PROPHET #33
    SAUCER COUNTRY #11
    WONDER WOMAN #16
    X-O MANOWAR (ONGOING) #9

YOUNG AVENGERS #1 NOW – This is the one that is really going to test me. Gillen, McKelvie, a largerly isolated book. Hrrm. Anybody want to give me the Jeff Lester treatment? (digital code)

    Happy Reading all!

  3. Light week:

FF #3 NOW–The stories so far haven’t been any great shakes, but the artwork is great. She-Hulk, in particular, has never looked so adorable, and I love how the fill-in FF interacts with the kids.

PEANUTS VOL 2 #5–$3.99 price point is, as ever, a tough sell, but Peanuts gets at least a look-through.

SAUCER COUNTRY #11–I understand this is going to be cancelled. Cornell really should have done this through Image, so he could see his vision through to the end. Although I imagine he didn’t anticipate what seems to be the winding down of Vertigo….

SWORD OF SORCERY #4–Still picking up off the rack. This will likely be the make-or-break issue as I believe the second feature is switching to something new this month.

WITCH DOCTOR MALPRACTICE #3 (OF 6)–The Surgeons in the last issue were one of the most chilling things I’ve ever seen. This continues to be awesome.

  4. Medium week:

BEFORE WATCHMEN MINUTEMEN #6 (OF 6) – and lo, this is the end of the beggining.

FF #3 NOW – a nice fun book. I need a poster (black light, natch!) of “the Machine That Goes Boop-Boop.”

HELLBLAZER #299 – lights are coming on, and the bar staff is starting to look impatient. But I’m here with my mates, and I’ll drag out every last minute with them. At least DC has a clear vision and stable creative team in place for when they steal John away, right?

JUDGE DREDD #3 – good action, good attitude.

LEGION OF SUPER HEROES #16 -buying this more for the Fatal Five than for Giffen, but hope the new team gives this book a boost.

LORD OF THE JUNGLE #12 – I like this, but surely this will suffer for #11 having just come out last week….

MASKS #3 – Seeing the Green Lama and Miss Fury was a surprise. And I guess I thought Ross was doing all the art. Still, a nice pulp book.

MASSIVE #8 – I am loving this. Great political book.

PROPHET #33 – stratight out of Metal Hurlant.

SAUCER COUNTRY #11 – sad to see this go. A book which challenged and frustrated, but was always rewarding and [pushing to try something new.

STAR TREK COUNTDOWN TO DARKNESS #1 – yeah ‘nerd’

SUPERGIRL #16 – Asrar is staying! Woop! (but this cross-over Needs To Go)

SWORD OF SORCERY #4 – this works for me, both the main and the back-up.

WINTER SOLDIER #14 – dropped after this when Brubaker gets pulled. Guice has pulled some great Steranko inspired art on this.

YOUNG AVENGERS #1 NOW – altghough my LCS cancelled my Brian Lee Omalley cover. ??

  5. Decided to answer my own question. If anyone is interested, there have been 16 late “New 52″ comics, and with one special exception none more than two weeks late, which is pretty good.

That exception is BATMAN INC. #4, which was delayed two months because of the theater shooting, so that shouldn’t count.

Of the other fifteen, there are two issues of AQUAMAN, four issues of JUSTICE LEAGUE, four issues of GREEN LANTERN, two issues of PHANTOM STRANGER, one issue of BATMAN INC., one issue of SWAMP THING and one issue of GREEN LANTERN CORPS (this week’s, likely delayed so it didn’t come ahead of the GREEN LANTERN issue in the crossover).

So of 15 late books, 12 have had DC management in the credits, one was likely delayed because of lateness on one of those 12, and there was one each from their golden boy writers Grant Morrison and Scott Snyder.

  6. Thanks BobH! Revealing statistics indeed!

  7. Since I had the spreadsheet out and the formulas set up, I quickly checked Marvel and they’ve had 43 late books since October 2012, plus another dozen plus pending (some of those were cancelled). That’s not all “Marvel NOW!?!”, it includes some licensed books and Icon, but there have been more late “NOW!?!” books since October 2012 then there were late “New 52″ books since September 2011.

  8. And the slips keep coming at DC. Score another for Geoff Johns.

    http://www.bleedingcool.com/2013/01/22/justice-league-of-americas-flag-day-to-skip-a-week/

but what strikes me is PHANTOM STRANGER….twice late and its only on issue #4?!

  9. Wha’ chu mean VIBE is goin’ to be late? Oh, dia de los lobos, amigo!

  10. Last Week:
Re-read all of Waid’s Daredevil, fell in love with Samnee’s art all over again. Then I re-read Morrison’s JLA. Very gripping when read as a continuous work. Very much a blue print for everything he’s done at DC this decade. I got the run in the recent hardcover release, and I think it should have been three volumes rather than four – they are thin hardcovers – and it suffers for not including DC One Million.
On the cheap I grabbed an 80’s hardcover of Wolverine/Nick Fury: The Scorpio Conncection, by Goodwin/Chaykin. Great showcase for Chaykin, and the story was better than it needed to be.
In more recent books, Waid’s Hulk finally got going, Black Beetle was brilliant, Saga keeps on delivering, All New X-Men was glacial paced, and Conan was… Unexpected.

    This Week:
    Turn 30!

    AVENGERS #3 – Faux-Ellis scripting meets faux-Euro art!

DEADPOOL #4 – It’s a funny book. The first three issues seemed to come out one month, then a wait for this one. Marvel crazy.

MASSIVE #8 – The rig seemed to turn on them very quickly last ish.

MIND MGMT #7 – need to catch up on #0-6!

NUMBER 13 #2 – I really liked the art in #0, but in #1 the art looked like Rob Liefeld attempting to imitate the art in #0. There was a new inker, but it looked like it went deeper than that.

PROPHET #33 – Much like Saga, it’s the book of the week gauranteed to meet, if not exceed, expectations.

REVIVAL #6 – This moves at Saucer Country’s pace, if not slower, yet it seems to be a success. Does Vertigo branding hold books back?

SAUCER COUNTRY #11 – A damn shame it’s going. It was nice to have a book with a high concept that didn’t feel plot driven, more interested in atmosphere and stimulating imagination. I’m a complete skeptic to UFO’s, and I’m not sure if I liked the book despite or because of that.

WITCH DOCTOR MALPRACTICE #3 (OF 6) – Excellent.

WOLVERINE AND X-MEN #24 – I’ve seen both Storm and Wolverine in the exact same pose, kissing various X-Men members on multitudes of covers, that the cover of Storm and Wolverine making out of this issue just makes me apathetic towards a book I usually enjoy a lot. Last ish had endless armies of Clowns shooting out the doors of toy cars and attacking the x-Men.

WONDER WOMAN #16 – I disagree with the podcast, I think this book is doing just fine.

YOUNG AVENGERS #1 – I’ll hook you up J_Smitty. I’m sure enough people will check this out that Jeff will get a copy.

  11. @Corey (Ottawa): Welcome back! We were so worried last week we got the dogs out and scoured the land for you. Another week and your face would have been on milk cartons. We found no trace of you but in retrospect we’d probably have had more joy if we’d concentrated on the Ottawa area.

@Ben Lipman: Happy Birthday, Birthday Boy Ben Lipman! 30, eh? Don’t rub it in, ey! Don’t worry, MIND MGMT remains awesome.

  12. Thanks, Ben Lipman! On twitter? If not I can send you an email.
