  1. I am getting three tiles for my kids.

I am getting three titles for myself. But all three titles are more “I think I should get these” more than “I really want to get these”.

And half a dozen more I tell myself I will look at. Again, creators or concepts that I have liked in the past – and in one case, both – but that just haven’t been enjoyable enough to want to pay money for.

I am with Brian. I just want *one* book that I *really* want.

  2. LAST WEEK:
SHAKARA! SHAKARA! SHAKARA! I started reading SHAKARA! by Robbie Morrison and Henry Flint (Both of whom I loved on Nikolai Dante: Too Cool To Kill) published by 2000AD. It’s about a robot thingy that goes around blowing up meanies and yelling yelling “SHAKARA!” Three chapters in, it’s Excellent. (I also grabbed 2000AD’s The Bendatti Vendetta and Skizz. There was a sale!)
Also been reading through vols. 1-5 of Eagle: The Making Of An Asian-American President by Kaiji Kawaguchi, for the first time. It’s pretty nifty – the blurbs keep trying to make it out like The West Wing, but there’s too much sleaze, blackmail and possible incest for that! I’m midway through the 4th volume, and no idea if Yamaoka winning would be a good thing or not!
These two old serials are far out performing any other comics I read last week, although Brandon Graham’s books were nifty and in Superman Family Adventures, Toyman crashed a Tooth Fairy party Supergirl was throwing for Superboy, so that was pretty rad.

    THIS WEEK:
ACTION COMICS #15 – Last issue was cool. Very much the sort of adventures for Superman that I’d like to read more of.

AVENGERS #1 – You’ll have to wow me for the start Hickman! Uncanny Avengers blew it with #1, so me reading Avengers book are on your shoulders!

BLACK KISS II #5 (OF 6)

DETECTIVE COMICS #15 – Hopefully it’s not too much of a tie-in to Snyder’s book.

DIAL H #7 – Last ish was tops and here’s hoping for more of the same!

EARTH 2 #7 – As the JSA failed to form at the end of the first storyline, this may be our first taste of what the book will be like moving forwards.

GREAT PACIFIC #2 – A re-read much improved my opinion of the first issue, so I’ll sitck with it.

HAWKEYE #5 – The book strains without Aja, especially showing the light plotting, but it’s still interesting to read.

STORM DOGS #2 (OF 6) – I wasn’t blown away by the first issue, but Braithwaite’s art is lovely and a successful sci-fi from him and Hine sounds like something there should be more of, so I’ll give this time to warm up.

THUNDERBOLTS #1 – I doubt it as I’m no fan of Way’s writing, but NOW! got me to buy a Deapool book after I flicked through it, a first, so I won’t rule this out.

BAKUMAN TP VOL 17 – David Oakes meet Bakuman, the book you will *really* *really* want. Comics about making comics are always the best comics there is.

  3. LAST WEEK!

    BATMAN INCORPORATED #5 (RES)
The shudder brought on by parts of this issue are testament to the creeping sickness Morrison induced with Dr. Hurt. That whole run still makes the skin crawl.

BPRD HELL ON EARTH #101 RETURN O/T MASTER #4 (OF 5)
    Monster Fight MF’er

MULTIPLE WARHEADS ALPHABET TO INFINITY #2 (OF 4)
I just flip through these pages over and over. It’s not a propulsive story where I’m just tearing through it. The word play is really over the top and he’s really plugged into this thing people do where they’re not exactly delivering lines. You know, zingers. Rather, we perform for each other. We give people our best “material.” It’s a cool blend of heightened realistic dialogue.

    PROPHET #31
Milo pulled back on the anatomy wank this issue and I appreciated it. Graham brought the weird really well and I can’t say it any better than Bobsy Mindless re: my feelings on Diehard. While I’ve enjoyed the dated “Vision Cry Face” project in something between an ironic and genuine way Diehard’s attempt to rehumanize himself strikes me as fresh and vibrant.

    THIS WEEK!

    ACTION COMICS #15
Morrison continues to bid farewell to the DCU proper and I am in. It has ever been.

    BLACK KISS II #5 (OF 6) (A)

    DIAL H #7
    Arc the second begins!

    EARTH 2 #7
Arc the second begins! Wait, What?

    HELLBOY IN HELL #1
Though Hellboy and his cast have been in truly capable hands this is the Ur materials. Mignola pencils!

    INVINCIBLE #98
After last issue’s batshit interlude and the “for now” return of Mark’s abilities the table is set for a cataclysm of Kirkmanian proportions.

    WORLDS FINEST #7
Again, editorial move of 2012. Give Perez half the pages and timeliness is not an issue. Don’t sleep on Kevin Maguire. Ever.

JACK KIRBYS FOURTH WORLD OMNIBUS TP VOL 04
Is this it? Last volume, right? On to Hunger Dogs?

  4. Busy week, I haven’t even read any of my comics from last week yet…

    AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #699

AVENGERS #1 NOW–Is this Hickman’s? If it’s Hickman’s it’ll be in my box, but I’m highly skeptical it will have enough propellant to accelerate out of the $3.99 gravity well.

AVENGING SPIDER-MAN #15–Again, the $3.99 means it has to be an awesome team-up and look good on an in-store page-through for me to pick it up.

DIAL H #7–I laughed and laughed through #6. This is really good, and though it’s turned out to be a little more conventional than I thought it would after the first couple issues, I’m still not quite sure where Mieville is going with it.

GREAT PACIFIC #2–The characters in #1 seemed flat to me, but I’ll give it another chance based on the premise. It’s just nice to see somebody try something new.

HAUNTED HORROR #2–I don’t remember–is this is the one reprinting the 1950s non-EC horror comics? If so, I’ll pick it up.

HAWKEYE #5–I’m leaning towards not picking this one up.

SWAMP THING #15 (ROT)–Still enjoying the rot.

  5. If I never read another novel where the protagonist is a writer, it will be three lifetimes too soon. Reading comics about making comics feels even more pathetically incestuous.

(And that is even setting aside my crippling anti-Manga bias.)

  6. Dave, well thanks for shitting all over a series I love just because I committed the crime of wanting to share it with you!
Nah, it’s not what you’re thinking at all – protagonists of Bakuman are two high school kids dreaming of making manga, with the goal of becoming the best manga artists ever, getting a chance in Shonen Jumpmmagazine (One of them can only marry his secret love once he gets an anime because… because.)
It’s nothing like what you are thinking of – no white writer whinging syndrome here. More like a soap opera comedy starring a group of eccentric comic creators, all competing to outdo each other in Shonen Jump, whilst also working towards their own side goals ( love, respect, independence etc), with musings about craft and industry thrown in (and what a crazy industry Shonen is).
It’s not a book with ‘write/draw from the heart’ as it’s moral, more ‘figure out what you do well and how to do it in a way the market will support, and then work at your desk redoing it until it’s good enough’.

As for that anti-Manga bias… I used to not like Jack Kirby art. But then I committed to the Fourth World Omnibus hardbacks and… WOW. Same with Manga. Bakuman is the first manga series I’ve followed passed the first volume, but since then I’ve discovered and loved Crying Freeman, Eagle, Drifiting Classroom, and Saturn Apartments. About to start on Vagabond.
It takes a few false starts, but there’s definitely manga out there you’d enjoy.

  7. Where is the SHAKO! hardback!?!

SHAKO is THE ONLY BEAR ON THE CIA DEATH LIST!!! and I understand his frolics were caught between hardcovers for posterity and released this week!

Yet SHAKO! is not on this list!

Is SHAKO! not available in the US of A? Are the CIA responsible? Is it a cover up?

    SHAKO! It means simply…KILLER!

    SHAKO! SHAKO! SHAKO!

  8. @John K – Thanks to your heads up I just ordered SHAKO, and the edition that came out yesterday (the only I could find) was a paperback. I’d guess it’ll ship next week top shops. SHAKO should sit nicely next to SHAKARA on my shelves.

  9. @Ben Lipman: Cheers for the confirmation that the SHAKO! TPB is in fact real and not a mirage!

    I hope you enjoy it!

When I read 2000AD back in the day I liked SHAKARA! too. Henry Flint is zarjaz! Hey, you can put your SHAKIRA CDs inbetween your SHAKARA! and SHAKO! TPBs!

    Best!

  10. late to the party again!

Things I bought, and will try to read before Brian gets the list up in three days’ time, are:

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #699 – I thought the twist was very well done, and will be back to see where it goes.

AVENGERS #1 NOW – Ben Lipman notes that he needs a wow from the start, and I do too. The tease of the Imperial Guard in 5, and Capt Universe in 6 suggests things will get big rather quickly. Here’s hoping this is MANHATTAN PROJECTS in the 616.

AVENGING SPIDER-MAN #15 – love me some Devil Dinosaur. I was going to suggest that folks save their 2 x $4 and buy the Kirby HC, but I see it is (of course) OOP and going for $$$

BEFORE WATCHMEN COMEDIAN #4 – All nice enough, I’ll see it through

BEFORE WATCHMEN MINUTEMEN #5 – ditto.

BLACKACRE #1 – some strong endorsements means yet another Image book I will check out. Why can’t I quit you Image?

DETECTIVE COMICS #15 – will we ever get the LEFT half of the Joker’s face?

    DIAL H #7 – L-I-K-E.

GI COMBAT #7 – CLACKACLAKA Its Howard Hictor Chaykin with photoshop and Jane’s All The World’s Armor!

GREAT PACIFIC #2 – #1 was okay; great hook but read a little flat.

    HAWKEYE #5 – #4 was…odd.

HUMAN BOMB #1 – sucker for these Freedom Fighters titles. It will be nice to see some Ordway art again.

LEGENDS OF THE DARK KNIGHT #3 – really like Hairsine.

LORD OF THE JUNGLE #10 – classic illustration.

SWAMP THING #15 – impulse buy, after dropping at 12.

STORM DOGS #2 – had missed, but thanks to Ben Lipman’s tip ion Braithewait art, I will seek and I will find.

THE LONE RANGER #11 – completist is another word for masochist.

    and:

JACK KIRBYS FOURTH WORLD OMNIBUS TP VOL – aw yeah, Darkseid!

Thanks folks. Stay warm and read comics!
