Arriving 1/26/2011

Brian Hibbs

What a strange week: the death of both WIZARD and the Comics Code. What could possibly make that a trifecta, I wonder?

Meanwhile, I’m waist-deep in sorting the BookScan numbers (I’m dreaming in Excel, yes) — guess I picked the wrong week to stop sniffing glue!

What was the “something else”? Mm, I have to call an ASSHAT OF THE WEEK, this time — what the hell is wrong with Marvel comics for shipping ALL THREE primary AVENGERS titles this week, as well as THREE different “Ultimate Universe” comics, as well as TWELVE (yes, TWELVE!!!!!!) X-Men comics? That’s BEYOND fucked up. Do they WANT them not to sell? *sigh*

Anyway, what looks good to you?

  1. My Brian, that just has got to be unbelievably frustrating with Marvel’s crazy shipping. Any chance of a special Tilting calling them on it? They need to be held accountable; it shouldn’t just be ignored like “oh there goes Marvel again”.

I know YOU don’t need to be told this…. it is just ridiculous that this goes on.

  2. Does the sort of title-overlap that you point out with this week’s Avengers titles occur due to monthly publishing expectations? My biggest week of purchases is almost always the last Wednesday of the month, and I wondered if it was scheduled that way or if late books just tend to fall to that week.

Also, what’s your take on Marvel allowing retailers to sell Fantastic Four on Tuesday? I’m thinking that I will have to make 2 trips to the store this week to ensure that I don’t miss this issue.

  3. As I’ve said numerous times on retailer forums, companies must have some reason for these end of month huge title dumps (and Marvel seems the most guilty here), but they’re reasons that we (retailers and end consumers) aren’t going to be privy to. I call lame / asshat (you should have copyrighted that, Brian – grin!) also, but they don’t ask me.

  4. As far as I can tell (I may be wrong!), the last week is so heavy because that’s “publish or perish” week for monthly projections.

I think the FF on Tuesday thing is “fine”, but it’s objectionable to not have them, in hand, the week before (CF: BLACKEST NIGHT), because who knows WHEN the books will show on Tuesday? For example, our truck route shows somewhere between 1 and 4… odds are not great that I *can* get FF out before, let’s call it, 5 PM on Tuesday. The IDEA of Tuesday deliver is “so we don’t have to run around like chickens with our heads cut off”, and this method would appear MAKE us headless…

There prolly won’t be a TILTING on this specific week’s shipment — #200 is BookScan, which will take me into March, and odds are terrific that I’ll want to write about the ComicsPRO meeting at that point.

However, you can be fairly sure that the topic will come up at the ComicsPRO meeting, so maybe…

  5. Smallest week in a while for me:

    GLAMOURPUSS #17

JUSTICE LEAGUE GENERATION LOST #18 – This has become a title that I wish could become an ongoing.

  6. “What a strange week: the death of both WIZARD and the Comics Code. What could possibly make that a trifecta, I wonder?”
Does the death of one of the Fantastic Four not count? (sarcasm)

  7. These are the comics I will buy with my money and read with my eyes:

    AMERICAN VAMPIRE #11
(Still the same great taste – but cheaper! I think it is anyway, I lose track.)
    CAPTAIN AMERICA #614
(It’s still just sort of sitting there. Wait…no, false alarm.)
    GLAMOURPUSS #17
(Thrill and swoon to old white dudes getting snippy about brush vs. pen techniques! Seriously, it is fascinating. Who knew?)
    MAGNETO #1
(Howard Victor Chaykin’s writing this, isn’t he? 5 to 1 it involves Magnetos’ Bar Mitzvah.)
    SCALPED #45
    (Solidly good genre stuff.)
    SHAZAM #1
(Where’s MONSTER SOCIETY OF EVIL, DC? Where?!?)
    SIXTH GUN #8
(Still enjoying every cleanly drawn and tightly scripted issue of these western supernatural shenanigans!)

Comics! Yeah, they still look good to ME!

R.e the overload of Marvel titles – does this practice actually affect sales at the retailer level? Doesn’t the target audience just buy all The Irresistible X-Men titles in one visit instead of three (or whatever)?

As far as I can tell it won’t affect Marvel’s sales on these titles since they sell to the retailer who ordered in advance (see, Mr. Hibbs, I’ve been paying attention) so I guess there’s no real incentive for Marvel (or whoever) to fix this practice. Which is why I hope the retailer doesn’t have to eat the loss in sales.

  8. A markedly small list for me, which shows that going ‘double or nothing’ on interwoven families of books might not be the best business model.

DETECTIVE COMICS #873 – everything I want a Batman book to be. Awesome stuff.
FANTASTIC FOUR #587 – even pre-stunt, my interest had been waning….
ZATANNA #9 – golly mister! That last issue was superb.

BACK ISSUE #46 – some Bronze age love for Warlord, Beware the Cat and Worlock.

  9. Hey, is that Wizard Magazine I see there at the bottom? So funny….

  10. Actually 13 X-books in this shipment. Assuming that you’re including both Deadpools but omitting Namor.
