  1. BEFORE WATCHMEN DOLLAR BILL #1
Wait, that wasn’t a joke announcement?

JOE KUBERT PRESENTS #4 (OF 6)
Waiting for news on how/if they’ll collect this, so I can decide if I’ll pick it up digitally, or wait for the collection.

    HELLRAISERS GRAPHIC BIOGRAPHIES GN
I had to look this up, since it sounds like a biography of Pinhead. Unfortunately, no…

    JACK KIRBY COLLECTOR #60
Finally went to mail order on this, so I already have the digital edition, with the print on the way. The digital reads pretty good, I’m wondering if I need the print at all in the future…

SILVER SURFER BY STAN LEE AND MOEBIUS #1
The Kirby Silver Surfer was the only real Silver Surfer, and the Moebius Silver Surfer was shit.

  2. LAST WEEK!

    PROPHET #33
I have this weird button as a reader that can only be punched by the “Here’s the thing you never expected with no explanation,” move. **Spoiler** When they pull back on the power source of the ship and his head is all disintegrated it fulfills that moment for me where – as a reader – you get to fill in all the gaps in a flash and indulge yourself as a fantasist.

    SAUCER COUNTRY #11
On the pile…back to its we’ll read ‘em all eventually status.

    WONDER WOMAN #16
Hrrm. This one was narratively tedious and really just provided one link in the chain of the ongoing story. I try desperately not to be the guy that says, “Orion doesn’t sound right,” but for this to be the reintroduction of something so grand as the New Gods and to give it this level of dialogue and even exposition from such a central character is just…not doing the future any positive service. Visually nice as per the usual Chiang-ness.

    X-O MANOWAR (ONGOING) #9
“You should have kept me in the air.” Digging it.

    YOUNG AVENGERS #1 NOW
Still curious if the Ben Lipman might come through. Heard lots of good things! Also heard lots of bad things from people threatened by the upfront sexuality of the characters and the weird dialogue. ALSO GOOD SIGNS FOR MY ENJOYMENT!

    SCOTT PILGRIM DIGITAL OMNIBUS
So I got 3 ten dollar gift cards and blew it on this. What an amazing and fun series. I’d never read any of it (heresy, I’m sure) and now I find myself particularly obsessed with it. Really taken with how forgetful Scott is throughout. It’s a telling commentary.

    THIS WEEK!

    BATMAN INCORPORATED #7
The most divisive thing ever is back for another installment. I’m excited to read it, cite a bunch of examples why it’s really thoughtful and weird and interesting and then read other people say, “nuh-uh” a bunch.

    INVINCIBLE #100
Oh sh*t they pulled a chromium cover.

    MARA #2 (OF 6)
I’m so curious to know where he’s going with the disgraced superstar as a character. There’s a war on, the pinnacle athlete has been outed as a cheater, but a cheater with something so game changing on her side that it’s impossible to ignore. Doyle’s art is really good and confident as well.

  3. BATMAN INCORPORATED #7–I’ve noticed the last couple issues the storytelling has been unusually…straightforward. A sign, I suppose, that Morrison’s getting ready to wrap it up.

EMILY & THE STRANGERS #1 (OF 3)–Looks fun. I’ll give the first issue a chance, at least.

MARA #2 (OF 6)–Curious to see where this is headed, but still not sure if I’m board.

SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN #2–The first issue was better than I expected but still not great. My budget and patience really only have room for one 2x/month, $3.99 comic and I think that’s going to be Captain America going forward. I’m looking for any excuse or misstep to drop it, so this is likely to be the last issue unless it’s monstrously good.

  4. @J_Smitty – Sorry buddy, I haven’t forgotten! Went interstate for a long weekend, starting new comic day, then got back up and my net had gone down. Only got it back on last night. How’s the best way for me to send you the code? Twitter or Email? Or do you just want me to post it here and hope you get it first?

    LAST WEEK:
Didn’t get to my LCS so only brought books I don’t have on standing order (Marvel/DC).
Deadpool #4 feels like the dead president’s joke has run out of steam.
Wonder Woman #16 read like every other issue of the series. Avengers #3 was a bit of a mess – but it marks the point where Hickman’s pretensions stopped being a drag and became laugh out loud funny, so it’s got that going for it.
Wolverine And The X-Men #24 could possibly the least issue to date, even the AvX tie-in issues felt more naturalistic and less “characters make decisions based on other writers plots”. Basically, this is the issue where Aaron cedes franchise control to Bendis, and basically becomes Claremont to his Morrison.
Young Avengers #1 felt like a misfire. Like Gillen spent too long planning what this series would be/feel like, that it just doesn’t get to breathe and be it’s own thing. This seems backed by his letter column where he talks about a book that wasn’t the book I read. Things like Marvel Boy dancing to the Ronettes is fine, although I thought Goldfrapp was Marvel Boy’s music of choice, but having an 18 year old girl talking about how he loves the music her parents loved is weird. How old are her parents to have loved The Ronettes whilst she was growing up in the late 90’s/early 2000’s? That felt more “Nearing Middle Age But Figthing It Avengers” than “Young Avengers”. There’s potential, and McKelvie rocked it, but this was a bumpy start.

Saw Django Unchained. Tarrantino’s finally topped Jackie Brown!

    THIS WEEK:

AVENGERS #4 – Is it not weird that Hickman’s “great idea” for the Avengers is expansion, yet the last writer had about that many people on the team? Also, why the need for so many team members, if most of them aren’t to play a role in the book except background poses?

BATMAN INCORPORATED #7 – After re-reading JLA and noticing lots of Final Crisis and Batman riffs getting generated, I’ve moved on to 7 Soldiers, and Klarion comes across Leviathan. I think it’s a different one, but it made me laugh. He gets value out of the ideas he sells to publishers.

    HAWKEYE #7 – It’ll be ok.

JOE KUBERT PRESENTS #4 (OF 6) – I hope this continues The Redeemer storyline, as Kubert went Moorcock with that one.

MARA #2 (OF 6) – I’ll be getting this despite the first issue, which I felt was poorly paced and too vague at times. I usually like Wood and I loved Doyle’s art, and I think the premise is good and timely, I just hope I start to enjoy it more.

SUPERMAN FAMILY ADVENTURES #9 – Soon to be the last Superman title for me, and they’re taking it away too!

Y’know, I’m more up on comics than the above would lead you to believe.

  5. @J_Smitty_ Sorry buddy, there’s no code in Young Avengers. Was flicking through it back and forth looking for it before noticing it’s a $2.99 book, which means no download code because Marvel.

  6. @Ben Lipman

No worries, mon frere. Thanks for looking into it!

Also, excellent point re: Ronettes. It’s just that little anachronistic detail that can be a burr under an otherwise fine saddle.

  7. @J_Smitty_ I was just reading a commentary by Gillen, and he said they originally had “music my parent’s parents were listening to” but it got removed in the final proof read as a believed mistaken double word, and will be changed back in collected editions. If I were him, I’d just write “Grandparent’s” next time.

  8. @Ben

Jeez, that would be maddening. I wonder if it was a UK thing? Like, grandparents isn’t said and it’s usually something more familiar like, I dunno, Nan?

  9. LAST WEEK!

FF #3 was the book I enjoyed best of what I made it through. And all you Wyatt Wingfoot completists out there, you don’t want to miss this issue! Allred is having a great time, and it shows. John Storm just weirds me right out though, which I’m sure is the point.

HELLBLAZER #299 needed a bit more gravitas, but (SPOILER) having Piffy blow the back of mob-boys head off served nicely. #300 should be — and serves to be — a doozy.

LEGION OF SUPER HEROES #16 let me down a bit, as really, funny books with Validus that skip action are pretty lame.

STAR TREK COUNTDOWN TO DARKNESS #1: the voices and dialogue are so absolutely pitch perfect it’s spooky. This was great fun….with a superb twist at the end.

WINTER SOLDIER #14 ends on a quiet note, but with eye bleedingly gorgeous art from Guice. Thank you very much, sir.

YOUNG AVENGERS #1 just did not do it for me. Did get my O’Malley cover though.

SWORD OF SORCERY, SUPERGIRL, SAUCER COUNTRY, PROPHET, MASSIVE, LORD OF THE JUNGLE and JUDGE DREDD roll over…which is a really good bundle of reading. Did get my new kitchen lighting rewired without zapping myself, however.

    THIS WEEK:

ALL STAR WESTERN #16 – I read the last three of these at a go, along with a bunch of singles from Jonah’s solo book….and this just isn’t holding up. Heading to drop territory, I fear.

ARROW #3 – after hearing that Young Justice — which is Daughter(Ottawa)’s favorite show — was canned because the book and toy sales were low, I guess I should buy ten of these.

BEFORE WATCHMEN DOLLAR BILL #1 – Rude Dude!

BEFORE WATCHMEN OZYMANDIAS #5 – Jae Lee is one of my faves, and he has been at the top of his craft here.

HAWKEYE #7 – the rooftop BBQ scene with his neighbour was utterly priceless (“like on MASH!”), as was having Tony Stark hook up his stereo. Keep this coming.

I VAMPIRE #16 – well, not for long. A nice diet-horror book, with atmosphere and character galore. But I guess it wasn’t people’s cuppa.

MARA #2 – The best book about professional women’s vollyball ushering in a global utopia I’m likely to read. But seriously, I was very confused and frustrated with issue #1. Litterally, in the “did I miss a few pages?!” vein. Had I less faith in Wood, I would not otherwise be coming back.

NOWHERE MEN #3 – please listen, the world is at your command.

RED LANTERNS #16 – more fun than it should be, and with gorgeous art. And happily doing its own thing, while Johns tells THE EXACT SAME STORY AGAIN AND AGAIN over in the main GL title.

SHADOW #9 – pulp awesome. Mood, tone and guts are done just right.

SUPERMAN #16 – great art, but this book needs to unwrap itself and get going. The H’el crossover is a mess, so here’s hoping for a quick end. I do wonder if it was Lobdell’s idea, or Editorial edict, however. Knowing the answer to that may decide how long I stay with the book.

and PREVIEWS! It’s like the Sears Christmas Wish Book every month!

  10. BEFORE WATCHMEN: DOLLAR BILL #1 – Wow… wow. I… well, god bless.

BATMAN INC. #7 – So fun, but feels like a throwback these days. No big, still fun.

Books I Would Be Buying If They Were Less Than $3.99

SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN #2 – So… Peter is a spirit inside of Dock Ock who is a spirit inside of Peter. Okay. I can wrap my head around that, as a lifelong comics guy, but not sure how that fits into the “Marvel NOW!” objective. Ah, whatever. Sounds fun.

    AVENGERS #4 – I liked the first issue but… just can’t. Not for $3.99, and I certainly can’t pay that on a bi-weekly basis.

    Discounted trades for both!
