  1. SHAKO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. Last Week:
I thought J_Smitty made a great point in the comments last week about the freshness of Kirman’s Invincible versus current big two output. Having just read Marvel The Untold Tale, I think he hit the nail on the head in regards to the strength of a story with consequences versus a story with resets.
I only got my comics from the last two weeks yesterday, and had a blast reading them, a winner every one. (Except maybe New Avengers. Not sure how I feel about it.)

    This Week:
ACTION COMICS #16 – this has really picked up lately.

    CHANGE #2 (OF 4) – I loved #1.

DETECTIVE COMICS #16 – Emporer Penguin? Yes please. Layman is doing great guns on this. It’s been what, 3 or 4 issues now, and he’s already done a great Penguin vs Bruce Wayne story, had Posion Ivy and Clayface married, and now has Emporer Penguin stealing the Penguin’s mob whilst Penguin helps Batman. Only thing missing is Aparo, but Jason Fabok ain’t bad.

DIAL H #8 – This is a solid read, month in month out.

INFINITE VACATION #5 (OF 5) – This has been a long time coming. I’ll have to re-read the lot, as I can’t remember the others at all.

POINT OF IMPACT #4 (OF 4) – I hope Faber has an ad for his next series at the back, I love his crime books.

STAR WARS #1 – This should fun, and it’s been awhile since I thought that in relation to Star Wars.

THOR GOD OF THUNDER #4 – Getting the Walt Simonson omnibus for Christmas has really raised the bar in regards to Thor for me, but this still ain’t bad. I was glad to read Aaron plays a lot of Zepplin to psyche himself up for writing Thor.

WOLVERINE AND X-MEN #23 – Bendis has done a better job at writing an X-Men schism than the schism event did, but this book makes a better contrast of the differing philiosphies of the two factions than Bendis has achieved by bringing back the original x-men.

ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN GIL KANE HC – Not really got the cash for it, but I do have a birthday coming up, so maybe…

  3. CHANGE #2 (OF 4)–Yep, added this to my sub list after reading #1. Not sure it’s actually good, but it’s definitely different.

DIAL H #8–It occurred to me lately, this and Saga both have old people in heroic roles. I mean AARP, grandparent-type old. You almost never see characters like that in comics, except maybe Aunt May, and certainly never as heroes. I don’t think you do. The last one I remember is that Marvel Team-Up where Aunt May got the power of Galactus, and that was 30 years ago. But now there are two comics on the stands with elderly folks.

INFINITE VACATION #5 (OF 5)–Oh, yeah, I’d almost forgotten about this. I really liked it back when the first four issues came out, like a year ago.

STAR WARS #1–Getting this for my son, but I intend to read it too. Looks pretty awesome!

SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN #1 NOW–Interested to see the first issue, but anticipating it will be…not very good.

    SWAMP THING #16

WALKING DEAD #106–So the series for its first several years have been about Rick, but lately it’s been subtly shifitng to Carl, I think. I wonder if Rick won’t gradually be pushed out of the picture (or killed!) and Carl takes over, like Snuffy Smith pushing out Barney Google.

  4. Sorry, didn’t realize ’til after I posted that Ben and I had nearly the same list this week, and many of the same comments….

  5. LAST WEEK!

    BATMAN INCORPORATED #6
I don’t know why I assumed this was the final issue but I was just blazing through and realized too late that the end would not arrive. Overall, not the worst surprise when the trip has been such fun. I read somewhen that Morrison abhors “killing” characters but would rather see them change. Seeing poor Cyril and Beryl in this issue made me hope for the best. Been a while since I’d felt that about fictional constructs.

    GLORY #31 SHORTED

GODZILLA HALF CENTURY WAR #4 (OF 5)
Jeez. I have to say that I came purely for the insanity – the feeling of lovingly crafted detail and art honed to a bleeding edge. I never thought I’d feel the connection to this character so strongly. The sense, in this issue, that time has marched forward and left Ota marginalized and on the sidelines really hit me as poignant and timely. The things that “matter” are constantly redefined and often without our say so. Also, holy sh*t that little panel of King Ghidorah in silhouette had me pumped for the net issue.

    HELLBOY IN HELL #2 SHORTED

    INVINCIBLE #99
In what largely felt like a place setter for the all out carnage sure to follow in issue #100 Mark Grayson realizes that he is now forever tied to the mad genocidal plans of the radical eco-terrorist known as Dinosaurus. “There’s no coming back from this!” Indeed. Bravo.

    PROPHET #32
Simon Roy takes the wheel and I was very happy to see our boy John Prophet (he of the freaky dolmantle arm) from arc 1 showing back up in the waning pages. I love the inversion – we should fear him now as much as we rooted for him at the outset. It’s this push / pull of shifting allegiances and perspectives that pushes Prophet – for me – beyond standard “Space Opera” fare.

PUNK ROCK JESUS #6 (OF 6) On the READ pile.

    THIS WEEK!

ACTION COMICS #16 – Show me the way to go home, Grant. Quickly, fantastically, and with some life affirming tonic please and thank you.

BPRD HELL ON EARTH #103 ABYSS TIME #1 (OF 2) – LIZ SHERMAN LIVES!

DIAL H #8 – Nice comics for leisure entertainment. I appreciate the inside out nature of this. The characters picking up more and more information about themselves and the larger picture. After that initial rush of forced action this arc has had the feeling of learning to walk as a hero before being forced to run.

    EARTH 2 #8
With the last issue I felt the comforting grip of Robinson asserting himself. He’s gotten the rough, awkward, introductory pieces out of the way. The obligatory comic book forms have been completed. Now, hopefully, the series will be given room to breathe.

    INFINITE VACATION #5 (OF 5)
Oh, really? Terribly disappointed with this series. In retrospect the “big idea” was just window dressing for a bland “discover your own potential” 5 issue wank fest. TWO Full Years after issue #1! Beyond bad and trademark “WHAT NOT TO DO” when given the big blank slate.

    STAR WARS #1
Yeah man, show me something cool. Give me STAR WARS.

    WORLDS FINEST #8
Yes, continue to tone down the “Let’s find ways to get Power Girl” naked and push forward the two women stranded with weird knowledge of alternate realities. That’s interesting.

ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN GIL KANE HC
    SHAKO GN
It’s like John K(UK) ran wild in the “Special Projects” office.

  6. LAST WEEK: sick with the flu, and experiencing fevered dreams like the first eight pages of ASM #700. So no reviews this time.

    THIS WEEK:

    CHANGE #2 (OF 4)

    DIAL H #8

EERIE COMICS #2 – some Allred please.

GHOST #3 – this has zagged when I thought it might zig, and I dunno. Pretty enough but a starnge book.

HUMAN BOMB #2 (OF 4) – First issue was good enough. Despite loving the last DnA Freedom Fighters book, I really, trully have to believe the market has responded with a resounding “no” to the whole idea, and can’t quite fathom why DC is trying to push ahead all the same.

MARS ATTACKS KISS (ONE SHOT) – Rock and roll all night and ack-ack-ack! There is something oddly compelling about the shameless self-promotion KISS does.

STAR WARS #1 – my book of the week.

THOR GOD OF THUNDER #4 NOW – subtle writing and very nice art. Even if I’m not thrilled about the price.

WALKING DEAD #106 – some exceptional, complex emotional beats last month. Very impressed with this book right now.

    BOOKS etc.

    JUDGE DREDD MEGAZINE #331
NORTHLANDERS TP VOL 07 THE ICELANDIC TRILOGY
SHAKO GN – trained by the CIA? How can I say no!

  7. SHAKO!!!!!!!..oh, you all noticed already! You are all The Awesome!!!! Bless all your cotton socks!

What kind of sadistic beast releases SHAKO! and SUPERMAN ADVENTURES GIL KANE HC in the month when I am guarenteed to have less money than ever! Luckily, like Ben Lipman I have a b’day coming up sooo….

Also, Corey (Ottawa) – SHOWCASE PRESENTS WEIRD WAR TALES TP VOL 01. You’re a nutter for those too, yes? There can only ever be one victor in the weird war – DEATH!

    SHAKO!!!!

  8. Gagh! SHOWCASE WEIRD WAR is likely the besy $17 I’ll ever spend. I will report back on how awesoem it was next week. Spolier: VERY!
