Hey, here’s a weird one — a Leap Year Day New Comics Day! We don’t get THOSE very often! (quick, someone tell us how infrequently!)

And the publishers respond by… erm, the smallest ship week I’ve seen in years (seriously, look at that “book” section!) There are some TERRIFIC comics in this week… but not very many of them!

  1. Light-ish week for me:

    AVENGERS #23
    FF #15
    JUSTICE LEAGUE #6
    NEW AVENGERS #22
    SCALPED #56
    SHADE #5 (OF 12)
    SPACEMAN #4 (OF 9)
    THUNDER AGENTS VOL 2 #4 (OF 6)
    UNWRITTEN #34.5

I’m really looking forward to the new Unwritten. I was behind on the series because it wasn’t going anywhere, but finally got around to reading the last six months worth and I’m back on board. It’s as if I was an English major comic book nerd instead of a math major.

  2. February 29 falls on a Wednesday every 28 years (i.e. 7×4). So you’ll probably see two and certainly no more than three during your career.

  3. orc stain makes me very happy

  4. Leaping Lizards! Its Leap NCBD!

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #680 – I have been loving what Giuseppe Camuncoli has been doing on HELLBLAZER, and his Spidey has been surprisingly good. I was giving this a ‘yeah, why not’ in pre-orders, before I knew it was the start of a big arc I probably won’t follow. Still, should be pretty.

ANGEL & FAITH #7 – well, this Whedonverse series hasn’t gone head to head with Big Issues (except well, death and saving friends from themselves) but it is fun, superbly drawn and a nice highlight in the pull list.

KEVIN SMITH BIONIC MAN #7 – that preview left me confused. Being a completist now, rather than having an actual curiosity as to where the story is going. Yes, I am part of the problem.

LORD OF THE JUNGLE #2 – I’ll give most ERB adaptations a chance.

SPACEMAN #4 – liked #1, but I’ve been stockpiling these since. May be time for a read-a-thon.

I’m iffy for SHADE #5 (loved last issue, but the solicits seem to indicate this will be a story I don’t want to read); I might get the penultimate TINY TITANS for the daughters; and UNWRITTEN is what Dan Billings recoimmends so I may try and pop back in to that, as I really loved the first year on it, and keep WANTING to like the book.

    Leap of faith!

  5. Hey Brian,

Curious about your thoughts on Marvel’s apparently quiet policy of shipping some books twice a month.
Avengers and New Avengers just came out two weeks ago, and now we’ve got the newest issues already.
And when I was buying Hickman’s Fantastic Four I recall a few issues coming out within weeks, rather than months.
I haven’t seen a lot written about this and think it really deserves more scrutiny. As a long time reader (30 years) I recall Marvel occasionally ANNOUNCING special bi-weekly runs of titles in the summer but now it appears to be policy.
On the one hand as a fan I’m fine with this.
And yet given Bendis’ ability to streeeeeeeetttttttch storylines out per issue, it bugs me to think Marvel is intentionally decompressing stories so they can get that much more $$$ each month.
Why not just give us one issue of Avengers per month without all the splash pages and nonsense banter?

  6. I should elaborate by saying “As a fan I’m fine with this BECAUSE like everyone else I get excited by the prospect of new comics on Wednesday.”

  7. BATMAN BEYOND UNLIMITED #1

Beechen’s one of the good guys. Breyfogle’s one of my favorite Batman Artists. Therefore, I am looking forward to this book.

    SHADE #5 (OF 12)

    Loving the Shade.

STEED AND MRS PEEL #2 (OF 6)

I don’t think I finished this back during its original appearance, so I’m happy to rediscover it for the first time. Morrison understands these characters, and Gibson renders them perfectly.

JUDGE DREDD MEGAZINE #319 (Hi, Robson!)

    ..oh, hi!

  8. Justice League #6:

So now the entire DC line gets held up because Jim Lee can’t make deadline? Or was this planned?

Anyhoo, yeah, this book ain’t great. In fact it’s rather dopey. When Jim Lee’s off, I probably am as well. With Aquaman faltering as well (#6 last week was godawful), I’m wondering if Geoff Johns can write anything other than Green Lantern…

  9. Just to be pedantic (hey, it’s the Internet, I’m obligated!), it’s every 28 years, on average. Because there is no Leap Year in years that are divisible by 100, but they are added in again for years that are divisible by 400 (or 1000, depending on who you are talking to), it can be as little as 12 years or as many as 40.

But in this case, the next Wednesday, February 29 will be 2040. So yeah, a store may see one, two at most, but all of comics have only seen four. And that is being generous.

  10. ORC STAIN!!! YAY!!!!!

I’m definitely stopping into a comic store for that!

I found a local bookstore and bought some new Unwritten trades. I’m going to ask them to order the FF trade if they can.

  11. And technically, I don’t think “new comics day” was Wednesday in 1984. And I’d be surprised if it is in 2040.

Is Diamond really shipping two non-consecutive issues of 2000 AD in one week?

  12. That’s a spiffy point, BobH. Hm, now I wonder if there HAS ever been a Leap Day NCD?

For your Q, yes, it would appear so. I liked the packs better.

@Chris Brown: No, JL is a third week book. This is the fifth week. But, I think, once they realized it WAS going to be off by a week, they held it the second week, so as to have a DCU book (and the big one) ship this week at all…

  13. INVINCIBLE #89
With Mark seemingly infected via the viltrumite killing virus by his own half-brother who will take up the mantle of Invincible!? Yes, I will shill for this book.

    JUSTICE LEAGUE #6
I am off officially and I could go long on the reasons why but I think I’ll save the venom.

    SHADE #5 (OF 12)
Keep it coming, JR. Hopefully he’s done that recent era Robinson thing of “I forgot how to write this – aha, I remember how to write this – now I’m writing the shit out of this.”

    SPACEMAN #4 (OF 9)
Still enjoying it very much – cheaper paper, mongo spacemen, washed out colors, 1984 newspeak and all.

    STAR TREK ONGOING #6
Checking back in to see if the team has decided to stop playing “Hey remember when?” with such blind devotional gusto.

    TWELVE #10 (OF 12)
Damn it, Weston. I can’t quit you.

  14. SIX GUNS for me. I dropped SPACEMAN, but maybe I’ll get the back issues when it’s finished.

  15. Yikes, just one book for me…

SCALPED #56: Can’t wait to see where this goes next after the absolute BOMBSHELL moment in the cliffhanger end of last issue!

  16. AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #680 – The reveal of the sixth genius at Horizon labs was a slight let down in the point one issue, as it felt a bit like when Lost would explain a mystery that the writers had stopped caring about a season ago, where it’s not just a let down, it was rushed through and shouldn’t have been allowed to build in one’s mind as long as it was.
That said, this is a great series so I’ll be staying with it.

JUSTICE LEAGUE #6 – I dig it. It’s got heroes standing around waiting their turn to show off their powers, bad guys who have unclear motivations at best, and hilarious dialogue between heroes… seems like it’s on track for being considered a classic Justice League run!

  17. LEGION SECRET ORIGIN #5 (OF 6)
    LORD OF THE JUNGLE #2
    PIGS #6
    WALKING DEAD #94

    Books / Mags / Stuff
    2000 AD #1765
    2000 AD #1767

  18. Lord of the Jungle is also Arvid Nelson. Who is generally EXCELLENT!
