  1. Conan #2: That’s some gorgeous art by my eyes.
Glory #24: As a comics reader since the late-80s, my level of shock in being excited for a new issue Rob Liefeld creation is really high.
Saga #1: Can’t wait to read this. It’s gotten a ton of hype from the upper crust of comics literatti but still seems to be flying under the radar at mainstream sources. This might be a good book to be hipper-than-thou on by picking up the first issue.

Speaking of Liefeld, what happened to the third book in the revitalized Extreme line-up, Bloodstrike? (I think that’s what it’s called?) Is it late already? Admittedly I don’t pay attention to release calendars, but it just *feels* like it should be out by now with Prophet and Glory already on their “second” issues.

  2. Lots of stuff, and much of it should be very, very good.

BATGIRL #7 – I am afraid I am wrapping up Batgirl. The art has been awesome, and the dialogue super. But its weird; the book seems to spend all its time trying to show how she’s still Babs in continuity, without ever letting her be Batgirl. There has been some real joy here, but lots of navel gazing.

BATWOMAN #7 – another victim of the ‘gorgeous but….’ syndrome. The weeping mother storyline has done nothing for me, and knowing it will run a year is depressing. Now we have bullets bouncing of Kate, and she seems to be losing the flaws which made her so multi-dimensional, just to be another cape. I worry about hints of “artistic differences’ now reaching the interwebs. That aint never a good sign.

BTVS SEASON 9 FREEFALL #7 – Buffy has some mommy issues. This has been consistently a very strong book.

CONAN THE BARBARIAN #2 – this is also beautiful and well-written. Very pleased.

EXILE ON THE PLANET OF THE APES #1 – Boom, plugging away at one story at a time. No spin offs, no franchise. Now sub books. Well done, stylistically achieved, and stories that actually go somewhere. A real break from some other companies.

GREEN LANTERN #7 – Johns is playing all those same chords in teasing “the third corps” he played in setting up the Sinestro Corps War. And I am just as excited now as I was then. That said, the art in SCW really helped sell the book, while the current team is not at that level, to my eye.

NORTHLANDERS #49 – one issue left of this. Will be sad to see it go.

SAGA #1 – I don’t think I’ve ever had three image books on my pull list before. Looking forward to a good solid story.

SAUCER COUNTRY #1 – ditto. The wave of new Vertigo books looks like things I will be trying, and I hope to be sticking around too.

SUICIDE SQUAD #7 – dirty deeds, done dirt cheap. A witty, brainless book done with surprising style. I just wish the thin veneer of sexual sadism would vanish though.

So the tally: DC 6, Dark Horse 2, Image and Boom at 1 each.
The Number One Comic Company was kept scoreless. Not due to boycott or protest, but because they aren’t publishing thigs I want to read. So those dollars are shopping for new homes at Image (Saga) or Vertigo (Suacer Country, New Deadwardians, Fairest).

  3. BUCKAROO BANZAI #1 (RES)
The bastards can always get an issue out of me for Buck Banzai and the gang.

    CONAN THE BARBARIAN #2
Get some you magnificent hyborian bastard.

    GLORY #24
Take two – if my shop misses the pull on this one then it goes to digital.

    SAGA #1
The preview pages have me suitably weirded out. Forward!

    SAUCER COUNTRY #1
Paul Cornell and Ryan Kelly sounds like a winner on the face of things. Ryan going through some very tough times physically so please support his projects if you can.

    SHADE #6 (OF 12)
When I get this book I generally save it for last. That’s the best compliment I can give a monthly, really.

    SUPERBOY #7
Still liking this really well. RB Silva – awesome and on time. Deadline shmedline.

BATMAN YEAR ONE DELUXE EDITION HC
Not buying this and it bears repeating here that David Mazzuchelli doesn’t want you buying it either.

    WOMANTHOLOGY HEROIC HC
Time to see what 109,000 dollars makes. If you want to analyze what makes a GREAT kickstarter pitch begin here. I am excited for this – scared for this – and hopefully I’ll be a fan of the product. I’ve been a fan of the idea from day 0 so I hope they’ve got something amazing coming out.

  4. Another week that has me wondering why I bother with these things. OR, maybe I’m just buying the wrong stuff. Anyhoo:

    Frankenstein #7:
For reasons discussed in other comments sections, I’m buying this but not loving it. So no excitement for this issue, but not quite bad enough to drop. Not ‘bad’ at all, really… just ‘meh’.

    Incredible Hulk #6:
Why am I buying this book? “Legendary artist Marc Silvestri” is so ‘legendary’ that he hasn’t even shown up for, what, about 3 issues now? The ‘plot’, such as it is, is on a leisurely trip to nowhere. And are there any characters or character-arcs in this story? Banner-is-nuts, I guess.

In my Grumpy Old Man voice: When John Byrne did this same story 25 years ago, the first six issues saw the newly-separated Hulk fighting and escaping from Doc Samson and the Avengers, Banner starting the new Hulk-Busters and marrying Betty, character-arcs for Samson, Betty, and Bruce, and (arguably) some of Byrne’s best big fight sequences at a clip of about 1 per issue. Message to Marvel: more entertainment per issue, please.

  5. @Chris Brown
Man, I remember the marriage issue where drunken wino Thunderbolt shot Rick. Ooops, 20 year old spoiler alert?

Anyway, the panel layout in that was freaking amazing. How each Hulk sequence had a Banner counterpoint up till the moment you thought Hulk was going to ruin the wedding but it turned out he got thrown into a different church. Awesome.
Still think about it to this DAY when I see really lazy and wandering perspective changes.

Say what you want about Byrne but as a formalist he could really be impressive.

  6. Adventure Time #2!!! YAY!!!

I’ll also be picking up Glory #24 and whatever odds and ends I’ve missed so far this month. (Likely a new Daredevil, Prophet #22, ummm…that might be all.)

I’m *really* excited for more Adventure Time!

  7. BATMAN AND ROBIN #7 – I get this book for Mick Gray’s inks. He’s made a man out of Gleason.

DEMON KNIGHTS #7 – Will the raid on the village end this issue?

FRANKENSTEIN AGENT OF SHADE #7 – Y’know, I like the art on this one. Not as good as when the artist was on Unknown Soldiers, but still good.

    GLORY #24 – I’m a keen bean for this.

    INCREDIBLE HULK #6 – A guilty pleasure.
@Chris Brown – Silvestri was only ever on for 3 issues. Hopefully, so is Whilce – how many inkers can a man need?

    LEGION LOST #7 – I’ll be giving Tommy D a chance.

MISTER TERRIFIC #7 – Fair play, I’ll stay to the end.

SAGA #1 – This could be good.

SAUCER COUNTRY #1 – This could be good too! I always love a month with a few new #1’s to try!

SCARLET SPIDER #3 – The art’s the draw for me, along with the set-up of a Spider-Man who doesn’t want to help, in a city that’s begging him to.

SUPERBOY #7 – I hope this book stops going N.O.W.H.E.R.E

WOLVERINE AND X-MEN #7 – When they launched, I didn’t like this, and liked Uncanny. Now I read this, but not Uncanny. X-books are roller-coasters these days!

@Anthony Casaldi – Bloodstrike isn’t late, it was just scheduled for later. At least there’s a house ad in an image comic I read last week saying it’s coming later.
It’s probably a smart move – the hype for Prophet and Glory will help it. (There’s also Supreme and a Youngblood to come, isn’t there?)

  8. Saga, Saga, Exile on the Planet of the Apes, and Saga.

  9. You forgot Saga.
