  1. LAST WEEK:

Wolverine #1 was… alright? I think Cornell and Davis (with Farmer!) will eventually land this series, but the first issue wasn’t great. Not much original in it – clearly the plot has more to develop, and could be going somewhere really cool and new, but there’s just not enough to go on in the first ish. Cornell’s commentary on his website makes it seem like the put a lot of thought into it, and a had a lot of fun making it, but what’s on the page for the reader feels generic.
Wolverine And The X-Men was a Wolverine solo issue (because Marvel hate making any kind of sense with their shipping schedules), and it wasn’t great either. The artist, Ramon Perez was in fine form, but who cares about a Sabretooth-wannabe who appeared in the universally reviled Origins series? It’s like bringing Hush back into continuity – you can’t polish a turd. You’ve got to at least wait until that style of turd has some nostalgia value!
Uncanny X-Men rocked it though. Bendis’ best X-issue yet.

Buddy Cops and Sledge-Hammer ’44 were two impulse buys, and I’m glad I made both of them. Dark Horse are head and shoulders in front of everyone in the visual storytelling department, I think.

Saucer Country is on fire with #13. Shame it’s about to be put out.

    THIS WEEK:

ACTION COMICS #18 – Whoo-hoo! No more having to look at Rags Morales art! He’s the Chas Truog of the 21st century! What did Mozza do to editors, to make them so uncaring when it comes to his artistic collaborators?

ALL NEW X-MEN #9 – Should it not be called “Some Old X-Men”?

CONAN THE BARBARIAN #14 – Let’s get that war happening then. Not quite sure I buy into/understand this whole “She’s on the wall, he’s in the crowd’ aspect to the arc, but Conan in a siege is always a winner.

CONSTANTINE #1 – HAHAHA! Fuck no. You want to point at thoughtless, fan-hating shit like this, and say “See DC, this is what happens if you let a 90’s EIC run your company”, except the last Constantine series was from the 90’s! “The Nu52 – worse than the 90’s!”

FIVE GHOSTS HAUNTING OF FABIAN GRAY #1 (OF 5) – The house ads have a design style I find appealing. If this carries over into the series, this comic may win the week!

INDESTRUCTIBLE HULK #5 – If Simonson weren’t coming aboard with #6, this book would be dropped. But just the promise of Waid and Simonson will keep this one alive for me.

MIND MGMT #9 – ’nuff said!

NOVA #2 – I hope we get some space adventuring!

    REVIVAL #8
SAGA #11 – Looks like Image will steal the show this week.

COMICS: They take up more of my brain-space on a daily basis than is probably healthy!

  2. LAST WEEK!

I literally read nothing I bought because work was a grind and we had to string together a series of backflips to get family time. Comics! Sometimes they are a distant 12th place finisher in the race that is life!

    THIS WEEK!

    ACTION COMICS #18
I get the feeling that this is going to be messy.

BPRD HELL ON EARTH #105 COLD DAY IN HELL #1 (OF 2)
    Hasn’t let me down yet.

    CONAN THE BARBARIAN #14
I think Belit on the wall and Conan on the siege is just a good show of obsession. Conan, as I read him, was a guy who could let just about anything go once his personal stake was removed. Belit is a thread that he just can’t help pulling. Until she is “resolved” he won’t let it be.

    INVINCIBLE #101
After what feels like a long pause we plunge into the new game that is Invincible post Dinosaurus. I’m kinda hoping that the “explain-a-thon” of the latter half of 100 wasn’t as much of a panacea reset as it seemed last issue. Should be an okay starting point for people joining the title.

    SAGA #11
    My favorite fantasy comic.

    WONDER WOMAN #18
My least favorite fantasy comic and possibly my last issue at that.

    X-O MANOWAR (ONGOING) #11
Why is this tagged ongoing? Some retailer-y thing?

    Happy motoring, everybody.

  3. ALL CRIME #1–I looked this up, but all the reviews are from November 2012… Late release? What went wrong? Or is this a different issue? Anyway, looks intriguing, I’ll check it out. I like the noir comics, and since dropping Fatale I’ve had a noir-ish hole in my monthly comics haul.

CAPTAIN AMERICA #5–This is picking up steam. Turns out Cap with a kid works out pretty well.

    CONAN THE BARBARIAN #14

DAREDEVIL #24–I’m in awe. 24 straight issues, there are at least three or four awesome things every issue, only maybe two or three wrong notes in the whole series and those were like twelve issues ago. I almost wish it wasn’t so uniformly high-quality if only because I take it for granted. I don’t even read it first every month because I know it’s going to be good.

HOLLOWS #4 (OF 4)–Absolutely beautiful Japanese woodcut-style drawing, but I forgot to get issue #3, and um, issue #2, and just not sure if I want to bother catching up. I’ll thumb through it and consider.

SAGA #11–So for the past month I’ve been, maybe not actually on the edge of my seat, but worried about that damn cat in space. Yeah, I guess I’m invested in these characters.

SWORD OF SORCERY #6–Frankenstein, Saucer Country, Batman Inc., and this are getting canned within a few months of each other. DC, I’m trying to buy your comics, but I can’t do it when you cancel everything good! God knows I’m not getting #2 of that terrible Justice League comic I bought the first issue of because it had Iwo Jima on the cover.

  4. Almost through the backlog…I am thinking I need a short box labeled “TO READ.” When that gets to be a long box, its time to admit I have a problem. Or buy another box.

LAST WEEK: FEARLESS DEFENDERS #2 was kind of ‘eh’ which is a shame. Having a Wonder Woman analog with the initials WW based in Greek mythology is not the most inspired idea, and really makes this all too easy to drop.

GREEN LANTERN THE ANIMATED SERIES #12 – had a nice enviro message that Daughter(Ottawa) appreciated, although she didn’t want the planet to be sad anymore.

STAR WARS #3 was OKAY, with nice moments but that’s about it.

WALKING DEAD #108 has tigers. But it also had ping pong. So it too can score no higher than OKAY.

UNCANNY X-MEN #3 and TRIGGERGIRL 6 #1 both remain VERY GOOD, as did SHADOW #10, the book I probably enjoyed most. The rest are on deck for the weekend, including SLEDGEHAMMER 44 which I forgot I ordered; glad to hear Ben Lipman that it’s good.

    THIS WEEK:

ALL CRIME #1 – agree with Thelonius on some noir. That Bruce Timm cover is mighty nice too.

BPRD HELL ON EARTH #105 COLD DAY IN HELL #1 – dropping in for my occasional BPRD fix.

    COMEBACK #5 (OF 5)
    CONAN THE BARBARIAN #14

CONSTANTINE #1 – I agree with Ben Lipman 100% about this being fan hating shit. Hypocritically, I guess I was giving thisone issue. I am NOT hopeful however, for even setting aside the creative team shenanigans, that preview hurt my eyes so much I litterally could not read it. I just can’t figure out who this book is for. And at the risk of being an internet troll, Hellblazer #1 was dated Jan 88, meaning it likely came out in Nov 87. Which I say only because it will always be a “late 80s” book to me.

DAREDEVIL #24 – yep, 24 issues and still going strong.

    JUDGE DREDD YEAR ONE #1

JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #2 – art aside, I was pleasantly surprised by JLA 1, and am back for this issue.

LEGION OF SUPER HEROES #18 – crikey. Sun Boy killed off panel and eaten. Talk about a change in tone. Bring on the Fatal Five.

    MIND MGMT #9 – Kindt

SAGA #11 – this doesn’t really do it for me. “Lying…”

STAR TREK COUNTDOWN TO DARKNESS #3 – not yet clear how this ties to the movie, but a nice story so far. I actually laugh when I see the art having CGI lense flare added to some panels. Oh JJ….

STORM DOGS #4 (OF 6) – a bit of a wait here, and last issue lost some momentum. But I have really liked this thoughtful book. Great color palette and feel to the art, and it is clear that a ton of thought has gone into this universe.

SUPERGIRL #18 – Asrar is doing some amazing art. That WW/SG fight was stellar.

SWORD OF SORCERY #6 – enjoyable, but it seemed to struggle to find the balance between character and action. It’s just unfortunate that 6-8 issues is all anyone gets anymore to get something going these days.

COMICS! They still print them, so I still buy them!

  5. LAST WEEK!
BATMAN AND ROBIN #18 – The wordless thing made it rely on Patrick Gleason’s visuals, which as usual occasionally required a 2nd glance to figure out What Is That? in the panels, but it was a touching sendoff to Damian and very well done

WALKING DEAD #108 – Corey is right. Ping pong cancels out tigers

    THIS WEEK!
ACTION COMICS #18 – Very on the fence since I dropped off a while back due to the unevenness

ALL CRIME #1 – I’ll Third the notion. Yep I like me some noir and the Bruce Timm cover is lovely, but I’ll give it a flip through first

CONSTANTINE #1 – Hellblazer is still on my pull list, so the LCS might have earmarked a copy for me. But, god, I hope they didn’t

DAREDEVIL #24 – Is it ironic that Marvel’s $2.99 books are so much better than their $3.99 books?

DOCTOR WHO PRISONERS OF TIME #3 (OF 12) – I’ll give this until the 4th Doctor to prove itself, because Tom Baker rules! OK, Jon Pertwee is also cool

FABLES #127 – I’d buy it anyway, but I feel like if I don’t Vertigo might cease to exist

    REVIVAL #8
SAGA #11 – Image is in one of its Renaissance periods right now, and these are definitely 2 of its best

X-O MANOWAR (ONGOING) #11 – Time to give it another look with the Cary Nord and the importantness and all. I do think this Valiant relaunch is pretty well conceived even if I’ve been kinda off-and-on with it

  6. You all want to add this to your “pull” for the week.

  7. How does Mind MGMT sell? That is a real good book.

  8. I recently started buying comics aafter a 23 year absence, with ASM 700. The Marvel Now titles got me in again cos Im just a sucker for a no 1. My main concern I suppose is how long will the new Capt America, Superior Spidermans and Thors actually last before the titles are either cancelled or reverted back to a previous numbering system?. I found your comment about the Daredevil series interesting “24 issues and still going strong.” Are people nervous that its not gonna endure or something? Is 24 issues really a big milestone these days? Doesnt give me much confidence that Thor, Capt America and All new Xmen etc are gonna get into the 100 or 200 issues range. Which is something I really do wanna see happen rather than be looking around for more short term titles in the near future that too only endure for less than 30 or 40 issues. Im really enjoying Thor, Cap, All new Xmen and Superior and DD. i just hope Marvel gives them the respect they deserve and dont dick around changing the creative teams and the numbering.

  9. Adrian, I think the 24 issues comments were more about that many isues being written by one guy, Mark Waid, and keeping up a very high level of quality throughout that period.

Nevertheless, it does seem Marvel and DC have little respect nowadays for the integrity of their issue numbering. Captain America in particular seems to be cancelled and re-numbered every 40-50 issues, and although Marvel is being coy about it, my impression is that Superior Spider-Man is not meant to be a long-running title.

It’s annoying to those of us who collected in the 1980s, when the companies took pride in having long-running titles. Still, it’s just something you have to get used to when collecting in today’s environment. Oddly, I feel like Image’s popular creator-owned series, like the Walking Dead or Saga, have a better chance of making it into the very high issue numbers.
