  1. HELLBLAZER #277
    HELLRAISER #1

    Really? *Really*?

Do they go out of their way to make it hard for the Retailer and the Customer to have any idea what is going on? Because I am not so sure you can be this stupid by blind chance.

(And I say this as someone who will buy and love both books.)

  2. ALAN MOORE NEONOMICON #4 – How will he top a character falling for, and peeing in front of, the monster who raped her?

  3. Time to get at that shipping list like a scab and pick! Pick! Pick!

    ALAN MOORE NEONOMICON #4
(True fact: Initially I misread the title as NEOCOMICON and expected it to be a ficto-drama of that time Alan Moore went to a Con and some bloke wouldn’t let him tinkle in peace and he vowed over the yellowed porcelain to never darken another such event. Imagine my surprise! Alan Moore – when he’s gone you’ll miss him!)
    ASTONISHING SPIDER-MAN WOLVERINE #5
    (It’s okay.)
    BATMAN INCORPORATED #4
    (Now Weekly!)
    CREEPY COMICS #5
    (Patchy Comics more like.)
    DEADPOOLMAX #6
    (The Kyle Baker.)
    HELLBLAZER #277
(Didjaknow they were required to call it HELLRAISER to avoid confusion with HELLRAISER? Didn’t work did it?)
    SIXTH GUN #10
(Holy moley! This is some solid comic bookery right sure and true.)

    I’m buying:

SHOWCASE PRESENTS THE WITCHING HOUR TP VOL 01
(I hear there’s Toth, Kirby and Kane on these pages. And that’s a call I heed!)

    I’m dreaming fervently of affording:

    STARSTRUCK HC DLX ED
(Storytelling denser than osmium! Artwork richer than Croesus! Female characters that aren’t just victims or angry men with boobs! Byzantine and Machiavellian! The best comic series you (probably) didn’t read last year – available between two covers in exchange for cash monies! It’s good, that’s what I’m saying.)

Comics! Like my missus, they’ll always look good to ME!

  4. I meant they used HELLBLAZER to avoid confusion with HELLRAISER. Sorry, my mind is going. Or gone.

  5. BATMAN INCORPORATED #4
Ya know, I could get into this weird / bad scheduling. I remember enjoying B&R when it would have a mad run of like 3 issues in a month and a half

    CAPTAIN AMERICA #615 POINT ONE
Associated podcast comment: I bought the death issue and thought, hmm, I should read this from the beginning. Bought all the trades (when I was rolling in cash like a king) and thought it was A-mazing. Then I started buying single issues and it lost all steam for me. So, you see, what I’m hoping is to duplicate the earlier effect by jumping in and then going back to trades. (shrugs shoulders)

I piqued my own curiosity with the sales numbers breakdown I did a while back. So, you know, research.

    I like Hardman & Parker

    INVINCIBLE #78
Inertia, but like the good kind.

NEW YORK FIVE #3 (OF 4)
“Riley, you got some ‘splainin to do.” Also, was it just me or did the whole last issue practically de-rail when they said the band was opening up for Vampire Weekend in some tiny dive bar? How long was this script in the can and would it have killed him to change VW to something smaller? All in all though, awesome comic. finding myself drifting toward this and Archie style slice o’ life books. Weird.

Well, Bendis has been all over us on twitter saying, “End of an Era, beginning of another,” so I’ll likely take a look at this. Bagley’s art has always left me a little cold. Everybody looks the same facially. You can swap Peter Parker for Donna Troy and that’s not a good thing. I appreciate a clean and timely artist, but yeah, you know?

  6. looking forward to Wolverine and Jubilee.

See thoughts on retailing post for the whole story but my guy was shorted by Diamond.

    CAPTAIN AMERICA #615 POINT ONE
So, I’m the market for the .1 books in most respects. I was curious to see how Brubaker was going to play with the prospect of an entry issue because a great deal of the Cap stories I’ve read of his played off of the mining of character history and continuity between the men who’ve carried the shield. Within the first couple pages you can tell he’s going this route again so how would he wrap it up in a single issue? Dude is so practiced at this type of story he can do in one issue what he’s taken entire arcs to do previously. Whether that’s something to be judgmental over is your own decision. He introduces us to Dave Rickford (aka Captain America 1,000,000) recently amped by Power Brokers Incorporated and one Dr. Malus. If you know your merry Marvel history this is a dead hint that our new Captain America is bad news…or is he? If you can follow me, Brubaker is clearly playing with expectations of the “in crowd” while not alienating the newcomer the book is designed for. Here, here and a toast to that, sir. It’s a nice bit of craft in a story that otherwise sits on the rack next to many many “Who is worthy / not worthy of carrying Cap’s shield” tales.

I also like that Bru is sort of deemphasizing Cap’s edge on others via the Super Soldier formula. It’s not the played out “formula is dying and killing him” just rather time and technology marching on. Rickford is said to be at least as strong and TWICE as fast – no small edge. Good jumping on point for people who have been away and the Breitweiser family on pencils / colors really deliver an appealing package of motion and emotion quite different than previous work I’m familiar with (Drax). Lastly, the Steve Rogers as Captain America countdown starts now. Overall GOOD. As a BRAND new reader I would say this might even edge to VERY GOOD.

Both at $3.99 I passed. The .1 issues are 2.99 so let’s hook ’em with the old crack addiction strategy. Thanks, but no thanks. That’s a shame considering Hardman is one of my favorite artists. I’ve convinced myself the trades will be worth it. It’ll probably color my feelings on Cap ongoing as well.

    Invincible #78
A partial wrap of the Viltrumite War really delivers for the characters with emotional pay-offs all round. Mark reunites with Eve – Nolan and Debbie begin to deal with their unresolved and new feelings – Even Tech Jacket gets a touching and funny page with his Dad. The highlight, for me, goes to a couple comedy bits with Cecil who gets to shoot Nolan in the face to no effect and then break the news to a war asset who doesn’t get his big chance because of the ceasefire. Comedy gold. More often than not, this is a book about the set-up, the action, and the pay-off. It’s a clean through line where actions have repercussions, characters advance, and the dialogue rings true (to my ear at least) for heightened comic book reality. Really well done and for $2.99 you get 20pgs main story – 2 letters pages – and a 6pg back-up written by Kirkman that is also serialized. Also, a note about the art. It’s a clean line and people have compared him to Bagley. Don’t. Facial detail, body types, posture. Dude’s a cartoonist and provides a VERY distinctive visual package. Value. VALUE for YOUR comics dollar. VERY GOOD

New York Five #4 of 5
Wood sidesteps the dirtbag Frank issue between Riley and Angie to focus on Ren. It makes sense from a creator who’s obviously invested a lot in getting the tone of these girls right. Till now she’s been functioning in the background – racing off to something or other. Really reflective of how a lot of us live in that we spend soooo much time thinking about ourselves that the person in the next room has a life can genuinely be surprising to us. The central crux of this series is that shit happens, people become something else or don’t, you deal or you don’t. It’s really good and REALLY something to look at for a Black and White comic. Visually interesting and LABORED over. It’s been VERY GOOD from the beginning. I’ll be back to see how it’s wrapped up. The covers will be torn off the books to be framed on my shop wall. 2.99 for 32pg. of comics. Ads on inside, back, and exterior back cover only. No interruptions.

    Ok, shutting up, moving on.

I didn’t buy any of the Ultimate stuff. I opened Doom #4 and saw 2 double page spreads with no dialogue and my eyes kinda glazed over.

Went to the basement and got out the T’s looking for the aforementioned Twilight by Chaykin / Garcia Lopez and found some awesome Tom Strong I didn’t get the first time because I was poor and in college. Some Transformers UK (Target 2006 – Time Wars reprints by IDW) that were pimped by Mindless Ones and then I found this thing called TROUBLE.

Trouble was apparently a series by Mark Millar and the Dodsons upon which many dreams of re-invigorating the romance genre were pinned. It chronicles the summer misadventures of 4 teens: Two girls, May, who is an “easy” redhead and Mary, a blonde who is not. There are also two boys, Ben, a shy and not very good in bed wimp and Richie, the favorite shallow and callow brother who gets in everybody’s pants.

Nobody has a last name but yeah, it’s kind of obvious.

Holy shit this is a rather radical re-imagining of the Spider-Man mythos. It almost hangs together as a better origin for, I don’t know, the Ultimate line but this version of Epic came and went with this single series (which toilet bowled). While it can be said the dialogue isn’t authentic to the era, nobody is stacked like May and Mary in real life, and Aunt May BY ALL WE HOLD DEAR isn’t a slut it should be said that I…ahem…am on the lookout for issue #5.

    Total haul 15 books – $21.30

  8. A bit of this, and that.

BATMAN INCORPORATED #4 (this Batwoman gal is a great character. She should get her own book someday!)

GREEN LANTERN #64 (curiosity. Begun this Green Lantern War, has.)

    HELLBLAZER #277 (fabulous stuff)

    NEW YORK FIVE #3

SILVER SURFER #2 (pre-ordered. Sadly, this isn’t what I want in a Norrin Radd tale. Not so far, so this might end it)

Brereton’s RED SONJA might be an impulse buy , but five bucks. yikes.
