  1. I would totally buy “Batman & the Young Avengers”.

  2. We all would Oakes, we all would.

  3. LAST WEEK!

    ACTION COMICS #18
Yeah, that was messy but it was such a glorious double bird to DC as it is currently constituted that I couldn’t help but love it for its ferocity. The backup was heartwarming and pure and a good summation of Grant’s underlying pillar of All Star Superman. We have been given the aspirational blueprint for how to be better people through the power of our imagination. That DC would throw that away to give readers an edgy, self-interested outsider is a brutal portrayal of corporate mismanagement. My farewell to the title.

BPRD HELL ON EARTH #105 COLD DAY IN HELL #1 (OF 2)
    Good, good, good.

    CONAN THE BARBARIAN #14
Best issue yet. While I loved Cloonan’s work this feels more solid and traditional (artwise) in a good way.

    INVINCIBLE #101
Well, this was very middling for me as Invincible goes. While I was glad to see lingering resentment towards Mark over the whole Dinosaurus fiasco this issue was a breather between what will be the new direction for the book. With Angstrom Levy out there somewhere and Robot having been shown to have A) real issues with Mark and B) tendencies toward “problem solving” I can only expect a return to the highs and lows of Mark Grayson.

    SAGA #11
Really great issue. “These days I use it as a bookmark.” touching little details make the title live up to its name.

    WONDER WOMAN #18
Crap. Good spot to drop out. Last issue. I will say I thought it was nice to see Azzarello developing the next threat while WW dealt with the present threat but I’m just out.

    THIS WEEK!
    BATMAN INCORPORATED #9
Yeah, man, I love this stuff. I really struggled with the brutal depiction of Damian’s end. Really. So much so that I was struck by the thought that where death matters so little in comics I actually felt this one. Was it a result of the way it was done or to the character killed? The work and development of Damian into a fully harnessed fictional piece of work is what made that so brutal.

BPRD VAMPIRE #1 (OF 5) If it’s part of the ongoing Hell on Earth piece or loaded with creators I like I’ll pick it up but I generally avoid vampire genre material.

    COMPLETE ZAUCER OF ZILK
Kinda shitty, IMO, that they released this in two parts so recently.

    GARTH ENNIS RED TEAM #2
Ennis’ genre work is some of the easiest to enjoy.

  4. BATMAN INCORPORATED #9–But, last issue felt like the conclusion of the series? A long-drawn out anti-climactic finish, or does Morrison have something else up his sleeve for the final issues?

DIA DE LOS MUERTOS #2 (OF 3)–The first issue was great, an over-sized horror anthology with each story set in Mexico. More of the same, please!

EAST OF WEST #1–Looks interesting, gets a flip-through.

FF #5 NOW–I think I’ve said before I’m kind of in love with Allred’s She-Hulk, can’t blame the Moloids for being jealous of Wyatt! My favorite Marvel title right now– I’m pretty sure an issue of the Future Foundation eating breakfast would be entertaining at this point.

WITCH DOCTOR MALPRACTICE #5 (OF 6)–The good doctor Morrow now traveling through his own body in astral form to clear up medical problems. Very similar in both concept and execution to an episode of the Brave and the Bold cartoon with the Atom and Aquaman inside Batman. Unfortunately, the B&B episode was better. I am glad to see the return of Morrow’s love interest/rival Dr. Macabrey!

  5. LAST WEEK:

BPRD HELL ON EARTH #105 was good, and I say this as a BPRD tourist. LEGION OF SUPER HEROES #18 looked like CRAP and got put back. SAGA #11 was terrific, but got me all verklempt as my father in law’s name *is* Barr. SUPERGIRL #18 told me it had Asrar and didn’t so it got bumped to the bottom of the pile. DAREDEVIL #24, JUDGE DREDD YEAR ONE #1 and JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #2 were all enjoyable, so last week was pretty damn terrific. But need to catch up on my reading this long weekend.

    THIS WEEK:

ALL STAR WESTERN #18 – this is really getting into the drop zone for me. Why is the book insisting on being about Gotham City? As an editorial fiat to start in the nu52, okay…I get that. Get some interest and get somes readers, and then move it back to the West. We are a year and half on, and the book has yet to cross I-95. It should be called ‘all star north-eastern’

EAST OF WEST #1 – already did a compass joke.

FF #5 NOW – best She-Hulk since Juan Bobillo. This is the book I will probably read first. I did get my Miss Thing cover for #4 so am doubly happy.

GUARDIANS OF GALAXY #1 – the point one issue was less Bendis-y than expected, so I am here for this. Gaiman’s Angela and ‘Stark in Space’ stunt will probably chase me screaming from this book though.

I VAMPIRE #18 – riding off into the sunrise

    JUDGE DREDD #5

MARK WAID GREEN HORNET #1 – can pulp magic strike twice?

MASSIVE #10 – time for the Kapital to get back out to sea.

MISTER X HARD CANDY ONE SHOT – Somnopolis or bust.

PLANETOID #5 – I have really liked this, although it seems to get missed amid Prophet, Glory and others. Issues are all extra length too, and an obvious labour of love. Great sci-fi in the Heavy Metal mold.

POWERS BUREAU #3 – We have reached an understanding. This needs to keep coming out consistently and I will buy it. No more excuses and no more delays.

SAVAGE HAWKMAN #18 – Last issue was the first I had tried of this, purely for nostaligia reasons. I liked the Shadow Thief, but am left scratching my head at N-th metal ‘Extremis’ Hawkman. Huh?

SHERLOCK HOLMES LIVERPOOL DEMON #3 – the game’s afoot.

TIME WARP #1 – let’s…do…. Nah, just messing with you. I remember when this was outrageously a DOLLAR COMIC.

TRANSFUSION #3 – robots vs vampires vs sheeple. Great moody art.

Lots of non-comic stuff Wed as well:

    JUDGE DREDD MEGAZINE #333
    JUDGE DREDD ORIGINS TP
PREVIEWS #295 – and out come the Post-it flags again!

and something I have waited for since last fall (or more accurately that I have waited for since I was nine):

STAR WARS KENNER ROCKET-FIRING BOBA FETT 12-INCH ACTION FIGURE.

Comics! The make me happy and fill my basement!

  6. What’s the over/under on East of West? 5 issues?

  7. @ Chris Hero: need some clarity before I could lay odds. Do you mean before it is cancelled (which really isn’t how Image rolls), or before Hickman loses interest and wanders off (SECRET #3, anyone…..)

  8. LAST WEEK!
ACTION COMICS #18 – Read this 1 1/2 times, because I had the same WTF reaction that Graeme talked of in the podcast & put it down, then picked it up again & was still so WTF that I think I forgot to read the backup.
DAREDEVIL #24 was solid as ever.
DOCTOR WHO PRISONERS OF TIME #3 (OF 12) was stupid enough that I may jump off before they hit my favorite Doctor next issue (Really? The US is gonna nuke all of Britain because of some aliens south of London? Nixon wasn’t that bad). FABLES #127 still gives Vertigo a reason to exist.
JENNIFER BLOOD #24 – Not a regular reader, but this was horrific & brutal in a good way. Is Al Ewing really leaving the title?
REVIVAL #8 wasn’t quite as compelling as the last couple issues, but I missed the 1st arc & still need to pick up the trade.
SAGA #11 was lovely and probably pick of the week.

    THIS WEEK!
BPRD VAMPIRE #1 (OF 5) – Like Corey I’m a tourist, but I dig those Ba/Moon brothers, and I read all of 1948, which was nice to look at and entertaining enough but seemed inconsequential. That last statement kind of sums up all of my previous experience with Hellboy/BPRD.

COMPLETE ZAUCER OF ZILK – I’m not picking this up because I bought the 2 issue series, but I’d recommend this for lovers of art and weirdness. I think Smitty is right that they could have just released this or the 2-fer rather than both

FATALE #13 – Jumped off this a while back, but it’s a done-in-one & if it’s got a good essay in the back I’ll buy it. Yes I enjoyed the backmatter essays more than the actual comic when I was buying it.

GUARDIANS OF GALAXY #1 – The 0.1 was enjoyable enough that I want this, but Marvel will again need to give me some extra pages to justify the $3.99 price tag

JOE KUBERT PRESENTS #6 (OF 6) – Joe’s last comic. RIP, sir.

POWERS BUREAU #3 – Bendis strikes again! Not usually excited by that.

TIME WARP #1 – I like these quarterly “What title of an old DC comic can we dust off and renew the copyright of” Vertigo anthologies.

WITCH DOCTOR MALPRACTICE #5 (OF 6) – This longer arc hasn’t been as successful, but it’s still a lot of fun.

  9. Over/under until Hickman falls way behind schedule, blames the artist, and then goes on to something else.

Pax Romana when like a year between issues.
Red Mass for Mars had one issue before disappearing for over a year and then limped toward a conclusion. I seem to remember him blaming the artist for the delay there, too.
Manhattan Projects is just a wholesale repackaging of The Authority.

I’m guessing East of West goes 5 issues before it’s cancelled and the artist takes the hit.

  10. Wait…Manhattan Projects is an Authority repackage? What?

As for Red Mass for Mars…well…it’s the same artist as Secret. So it kinda makes sense.

  11. @James:

Fatale #13 has, I think, the best stand-alone story but the weakest essay, FWIW.

    @Corey:

Planetoid also reminds me of the original Planet of the Apes, and so I invariably read Silas w/ Charlton Heston’s voice.

  12. I missed this weeks postings, but I’m also intrigued as to how Manhattan Project is a “wholesale repackaging of The Authority”. I’d love to hear that argument articulated.

  13. @Bubba:

Thanks for the info. Yeah, I flipped through it at the store and put it back because the essay didn’t look so intriguing. I might’ve enjoyed the story, but too many comics, too little time/money.
