  1. Butcher Baker / Detective Comics / Dollhouse / Jimmy Olsen.

Tony Lee’s Doctor Who comics are pretty good, as well, though I’ve decided to switch to trades for the Eleventh Doctor stuff.

  2. ACTION COMICS #899
    AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #657 BIG
    CALIGULA #1 (OF 6)
    DETECTIVE COMICS #875
    HALCYON #4
    JIMMY OLSEN #1
    TEEN TITANS #93

  3. AMERICAN VAMPIRE #13 – I’m ready to give this new arc a try since dropping off after the 1st 5 issues. I thought the opening Scott Snyder-written story started off well but went downhill as it went along, whereas the backup written by this newcomer Steve King had some pretty clunky storytelling at the outset but got better as it went and eclipsed the lead, but then it was over and this King guy was off the book. Hopefully he’ll get some other work somewhere, because he really had potential.
CALIGULA #1 (OF 6) – Maybe David Lapham writing about a crazy debauched Roman emperor will be good (even though Neil Gaiman broke the mold on crazy debauched Roman emperor comics with his Heliogabolus mini years ago). But really I just wish he’d find a home for Stray Bullets that will pay enough. Vertigo? Image? How ’bout Marvel? C’mon Quesada, sign him to an exclusive & let him do SB as an Icon title.
CAPTAIN AMERICA #616 – 70th Anniversary Issue! Because Marvel clearly doesn’t do enough Anniversary Issues! I bet there’s a new #1 coming up for Cap.
ELEPHANTMEN MAN AND ELEPHANTMAN #1 – It’s time for me to give the Elephantmen thing a shot again: Cool concept, nice art, nothing compelling enough to hold me (See also Hellboy)
GREEN LANTERN EMERALD WARRIORS #8 (WAR OF GL) – The GL titles have so much Event Mania that they need to drop the Event they’re already in to start a new Event! Even though I kinda liked the 1st 2 chapters of WAR OF GL, I may talk myself out of this once I get to the shop.
INCOGNITO BAD INFLUENCES #5 – It’s sort of like Criminal but not as good, but Incognito sells 10,000 more copies an issue cause in this one they wear superhero costumes! I hate comic fans, including myself.
JACK OF FABLES #50 (NOTE PRICE) – This has been a pretty amusing spinoff of the parent title, & I appreciate that they’re ending it before it grows stale, despite decent sales (at least for a Vertigo book).
SCARLET #5 – After a stellar 1st issue, this has been pretty meandering, but I decided to commit to the 1st arc. I like that it’s set in Portland instead of NY or LA like everything else, but in this case, really, isn’t Portland one of the coolest cities in the nation? How much police/government corruption can there be? I get that some corrupt asshole cop shot the title character’s boyfriend, but would Portlanders really jump on board for a revolution? May get some added cache because midway through the storyline, the entire Arab world launched their own Facebook revolution. Bendis’ power at Marvel now enables him to read near-future world events! Still, once he & Maleev launch their Moon Knight series this’ll come out once or twice a year like Powers.
WALKING DEAD #83 – Perennially this a great read from issue to issue, and the No Way Out storyline is no different. I have nothing snarky to say about this.
And I apologize for the long-winded snark in the rest of this post, because it really is a good week for new comics.

  4. What looks good to ME and who amongst the creatives involved particularly makes that so:

    AMERICAN VAMPIRE #13
    (Rafael “Down‘n’Dirty” Albuquerque!)
    CALIGULA #1
    (David “Clap Hands” Lapham!)
    CAPTAIN AMERICA #616
    (Howard “Shaking” Chaykin!)
    INCOGNITO BAD INFLUENCES #5
    (Sean “No Limits!” Philips!)
    SCALPED #47
    (R M “Hoo-ha!” Guera!)
    THOR #621
    (Pasqual “Raspberry” Ferry!)
    WOLVERINE #7
    (Jason “Harem Scarum” Aaron!)

Comics! They’ll outlast me, Sonny Jim, you see if it ain’t so!

  5. Without trying to salvishly homage Jolly John K-UK, my choices for this week’s funny books are also principally about the artists.

    AMERICAN VAMPIRE #13 (Albequerque!)
AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #657 (Marcos Martin! This man needs to be drawing Spidey. I will accept his doing Daredevil, however)
BLACK PANTHER MAN WITHOUT FEAR #516 (Francavilla!)
    DETECTIVE COMICS #875 (Jock!)
GODZILLA KINGDOM OF MONSTERS #1 (okay, I don’t even know who’s drawing this. This one is about the crush-kill-destroy)
KING CONAN SCARLET CITADEL #2 (nicely done book, #1 was)
    SCARLET #5 (the symbyotic Bendis-Maleev)
    ZATANNA #11 (Jamale Igle!)

and….the fact that I’m the only one who is apparently NOT reading CALIGULA makes me wonder about all y’all.

And is a slavish homage called an image? Bazinga! I’m here all week folks! Try the veal.

  6. ACTION COMICS #899 You know, arguably we are on the cusp of a true Golden Age of Superman. With Cornell, Roberson and some truly great artists presenting a consistent and dynamic visual element we’re right there folks. Adios to the stink of JMS’ vision.

JIMMY OLSEN #1 A little bummed that this will be the final summation of DC Nick Spencer. I hope he finds peace and tranquility stumbling over Marvel’s “Inifinite Crossover.” See what I did there? Still a shame DC lost him. Hope he gets some rope at Marvel.

SPIDER-GIRL #5 BIG Paul Tobin makes good comics, eh? Art good, character good, Facebook / Tweet thing kinda used up at this point. This series ends with #8

CAPTAIN AMERICA #616 Sink or swim moment for Captain America at 3.99 will I buy it? DARE I BUY IT>!?

Also catching up on Supergirl – buying Batman Inc 4 which was shorted last week – and going to look into the Stan Lee books. May scoop the first 4 issues of a couple and see how they are in a oner.

As always, the basement awaits. Don’t worry about big posts James. I enjoyed it.

I suppose Lapham will mention Incitatus at some point. Sheesh you make ONE horse a member of the Roman Senate and suddenly it’s like you did nothing else with your life!

  7. Whoops, missed one:

    BUTCHER BAKER RIGHTEOUS MAKER #1

I’m surprised it’s not on more peoples lists!
