  1. I wish THE SHADE was a HC to match my new STARMAN books but I’ll take what I can get at this point. Glad to have the reprint at all.

Casey’s SEX looks weird and I hope he can keep up a schedule. I hate seeing these books disappear after a half dozen or so.

  2. LAST WEEK!

    BATMAN INCORPORATED #8
On the one hand I think it’s utterly contemptible to depict the brutal murder of a 10 year old in a comic. On the other hand it was emotionally wrought and carefully constructed to at least not be a wanky, empty death. Robin and Nightwing were the heroes comics needed – then and now – but they’re not the heroes we deserve because we are regressive and stupid. Morrison offered us Pop comics nirvana and the powers that be spurned it for crass and base reasons (ie not enough people are as good as Morrison). This is what we get. Blood and Death. At the conclusion of Batman Inc…I am out of the Batman universe.

    PROPHET #34
It’s pretty clear to me that a lot of the things I really like about Prophet are the vamping that the team had to build in when the order changed from producing 6 issues in a year to 12. This is overlooked – a lot – by people commenting but it explains everything to a T.

    NEMO HEART OF ICE HC
People throw a lot of crap at Alan Moore as “greatest living comics writer” and to be honest I’ve bought but not yet read Heart of Ice (catching up with all the other new LoEG). That said, I also snagged an old issue of his 1963 imprint No One Escapes The Fury and I’ve gotta say the tone, pace, and style is so utterly immersed and spot on that he more than deserves the label. In my mind being the “World’s Greatest Writer” in any given medium has less to do with innovation and more to do with a mastery of the full tool box. The craft genius, as it were. Discuss?

    THIS WEEK!

    DIAL H #10
The exploits of China Mieville are now hitting territory where I get worried. Last issue’s “Glimpse” was really another level of character perfect for the book and an example of top class creation. Where I worry is that it’s getting good enough that I will really miss it if DC gets bothersome and ruins it.

    EARTH 2 #10
In a pattern familiar to all readers of Robinson the man is clicking now after a (for some) shuddering start. The big guns are developing in the background, gradually coming around to their destiny. The tertiary characters are flourishing and becoming interesting. The art, consistent and clear. As has been an overlooked benefit of this book and background, Robinson KNOWS the history and flow of this world. Everybody else is flailing in the DCU proper. Here it’s a given. We’re in good hands.

    HELLBOY IN HELL #4
Last ish I really felt something of a connection here. Less poetry and weird association. More family drama and interplay. Mignola has taken Hellboy to Hell and it may be some time – if ever – before we feel his influence in the corporeal world. Big props, as always, to Scott Allie who has proven a collaborative equal to Mignola’s minimalist masterpieces throughout the Dark Horse library.

    MARA #3 (OF 6)
You know, Brian Wood’s got a lot of haters. You know what they say.

    WORLDS FINEST #10
Loved last issue. Felt just enough of that old school vibe. Additionally, the artists that they get to pitch in (and there were a lot that issue) never felt disruptive, out of place or outclassed by Perez (who, to be fair, has come back to the pack a bit as he has aged.)

Happy reading every one and, if you feel like continuing the discussion, I’d be curious to hear what people think about that “makeup of the great ones” topic. How important is innovation, melodrama, pacing etc? Do you tend to have a “type” when it comes to the books you read?

  3. AGE OF ULTRON #1 (OF 10)–Flip-through. My expectations are so, so low. And yet, decades of Marvel fandom compel me to at least take a look.

DIAL H #10–I’m actually digging the relationship between Nelson and Roxie more than the fantastical elements of the story. I find myself fairly invested in them, while the mystery about the dial is starting to feel less and less relevant. I’d be happy just to see these two having adventures turning into ludricrous superheroes.

GREAT PACIFIC #5–I’m leaning towards not picking it up this time.

HELHEIM #1–Vikings and stuff. Could be interesting.

MARA #3 (OF 6)–The second issue was better than the first. This alterna-future doesn’t seemed very well fleshed-out, but it’s kept my attention so far.

SEX #1–Sex? Yes, please! Or has somebody made that joke already? Seriously, this will get a flip-through, with a strong bias towards buy.

SWAMP THING #18–After the not-really-an-ending last issue, hoping we get a new storyline in this book, and not just more tracking down Abby with obstacles thrown up in Swampy’s path.

  4. re: Sex
Kelly or Casey? I’m thinking Casey

  5. Hey Brian- just read about you’re getting a gun in your face the other day (http://robot6.comicbookresources.com/2013/03/comics-a-m-comix-experience-robbed-werthams-distortions/). That is a majorly shitty thing to have happen to you. Condolences or something like that.
I guess those guys read about the big comic auctions recently and thought comic store = big bucks. That is sort of funny, except an idiot pointing a gun at you is probably more dangerous than an intelligent person doing so!
    Keep on keepin’ on.

On a lighter note, add me to the fanbase of Dial H. I enjoy it as much as I enjoy Unwritten, my favorite non-Morrison book. Don’t fuck with it DC!

  6. Lots this week:

AGE OF ULTRON #1 – Avengers #162 from Aug ’77 is pretty much the perfect comic of my childhood. But they don’t make ’em like that anymore, so I am ready to be disappointed.

BEFORE WATCHMEN RORSCHACH #4 (OF 4) – The End is Nigh

DIAL H #10 – bring back Lacrymose Man!

GREEN ARROW #18 – Loved last issue, which was my jumping on point, so clearing the deck didn’t bother me. Lovely, lovely art by Andrea Sorentino.

HUMAN BOMB #4 (OF 4) – finishing off the run, but with little enthusiasm. #2 was really nice, #3 was formulaic.

PHANTOM STRANGER #6 – oh my yes for Gene Ha and Zander Cannon.

POWERS BUREAU #2 – IF THIS IS ACTUALLY THERE, I will buy it. But I am running a serious goodwill defecit.

SEX #1 – “the one thing I never thought I’d find in a comic shop!” Sorry, all the good jokes were taken.

SNAPSHOT #2 (OF 4) – remember when peoople got all excited about black and white comics?!

SUPERMAN FAMILY ADVENTURES #10 – aw, yeah ZOD!!

    WORTH A FLIP: DETECTIVE COMICS #18, EARTH 2 #10, WORLDS FINEST #10

DROPPED: GREAT PACIFIC, MARA #3, SUPERMAN #17 (“he meets Galactus and it is TOTES ORIGINAL, m’kay!” H’el on Earth has been a Dis’Aster), and WINTER SOLDIER #16 (Brubaker had a great run and a personal vision, with Guice quo Steranko drawing his heart out, and that was enough to compensate for a forgettable and entirely generic main character)

COMICS! I care too much to hate.

  7. I’m not going to buy the AGE OF ULTRON event. Bendis has no ability to write any material involving any aspect of science. His MIGHTY AVENGERS arc that had Skrull-Pym using a Commodore 64 virus to break Ultron’s hold on Iron Man; various flubs in SECRET INVASION; the mishandling of the Vision in his last NEW AVENGERS arc and the mishandling of the Microverse in his last AVENGERS arc. If I want to read scientifically illiterate writing, I can read screenfuls of it for free.

    SRS

  8. ^Shame. I was really hoping you’d footnote it page by page, Steven.
