As always, what do YOU think?

7 Responses to “ Arriving 4/10/13 ”

  1. I think if it weren’t for kids books, I would only be getting SAUCER COUNTRY.

(I love DC for doing LIL GOTHAM, and love them more for printing it. But still…)

  2. Saga’s the only book for me this week. Whether I pick it up or let it wait for next week depends on how nice Wednesday turns out to be for a bike ride.

  3. Last week:
Re-read Mozza’s Action Comics in one go. Eh? It actually felt lesser read that way, rather than more cohesive. I really couldn’t stop wondering why they didn’t just do a full reboot.
Read Kindt’s Mind MGMT issues in one go. Loving it.
Got hooked on Judge Dredd the other week due to the Origins trade. Well worth checking that one out, but you’ll probably end up as hungry for more as I am, and them trades be pricey.

HAWKEYE #9 – Maybe. I’m an issue or two behind due to just plain forgetting a new one was out, and then the store selling out.

    SAGA #12 – It’ll be amazeballs.

SAUCER COUNTRY #14 – Bring on season 2! Anyone else get a laugh out of the Bleeding Cool article? It said DC changed the last caption to “The end” instead of the scripted “The end of season one”, and then the editor complained, because it wasn’t “DC” it was him! Ahh, that awkward moment when you realise you’re a suit for The Man.

SEX #2 – The first time’s often awkward and not quite what we hoped for, so let’s hope it gets better with practise. Or at least there’s more to say than sex puns.

STAR WARS #4 – Shit better start exploding soon.

THOR GOD OF THUNDER #7 – How is this a second arc? HOW? The first one didn’t have an ending! I’d probably pass, but there’s not much else this week. It ain’t bad, it’s just not great.

UNCANNY X-MEN #4 – Paul O’Brien’s X-Axis brought up some clear objective faults with Bendis’ x-books, but fool that I am, I’ve found them to be page turners.

WOLVERINE #2 – It sounds like Cornell forgot the first issue was the first issue, and it’s in this issue things really kick off.

  4. BATGIRL #19

BATMAN #19–Maybe, I’m liking Harper Row, is she in this one, or is she still a once every 6-7 issues kind of thing? If she’s in this, I’ll get it.

FEARLESS DEFENDERS #3–This book is fun but not necessary, at $2.99 it’s doable, if it were $3.99 there’s no way. Why why why does Marvel have so many of these books at the $3.99 price point?

SAGA #12–Oh geez, this and Walking Dead are the only comics I really think about in between reading issues. And this is going on hiatus after this issue, I think? One month is too long to wait between issues, never mind several.

SAUCER COUNTRY #14–So I read issues #10-13 in one fell swoop, and I have to say that was quite a change in pacing. As of #10 it was still, shall we say, rather stately in its pacing, but as of the last arc it’s now burning through the sub-plots every three pages. I think the faster pace benefits the book but to tell the truth, #14 is way too soon to end it. Too bad DC didn’t let it go to, say, #18 (and that would fit nicely into 3 trades, as well) to give it a little more time to wrap things up.

SEX #2–Ha, ha, what’s my joke for this one? How about, Sex: the first time was kind of disappointing and now I only get it once a month. But let’s talk about comics! OK, I may have to add this to my sublist just for the chuckles.

STAR WARS #4–My son’s review of #3: “That was awesome.” So I’d say it’s nicely recovered from the second-issue lull. I keep meaning to get around to reading them myself but haven’t managed it yet.

TALES OF FEAR #1–Horror anthologies almost always get a flip-through, at least. The computer-generated art the preview showed doesn’t look promising, but we’ll see.

WALKING DEAD #109–I am so interested in seeing where this whole thing with Ezekiel and Negan is going. I’m afraid it’s going to end up with a fairly boring shoot-out kind of situation, but there are so many more intriguing possibilities and I really hope Kirkman follows one of them.

  5. LAST WEEK:

Work has been a right pain, so all I made it through was ACTION COMICS #19, which I loved. And that made me sad. Did read Age of Ultron on the stands. As expected it took 45 seconds and made me happy I saved $4. Are there people BUYING this who think it is well-done? I’m being serious.

THIS WEEK (more books to buy and toss in the den for later!)

BATMAN #19 – the Maleev backup was oh so nice.

BATMAN LIL GOTHAM #1 – Nguyen!

CONSTANTINE #2 – worth a second look (read: first issue was better than I feared), but it all seemed so generic. It hs very House Style. Which saddens me enormously.

GI JOE COBRA FILES #1 – not sure why the restart (probably the movie?), but Mike Costa and Antonio Fuso have been killing it on this book (even if the Russia arc was a bit of a let down). Great spy book, with tons of style. Reminds one of the LOSERS at its best.

HAWKEYE #9 – I would read those romance comics in a minute.

LORD OF THE JUNGLE #14 – seems unusually long between issues. Nice art on a book that is really just IP mining.

ROCKETEER HOLLYWOOD HORROR #3 – the Bone art has actually been a hinderance, which suprises. I guess I just don’t think of ‘my’ Rocketeer in that style.

SAGA #12 – and hitaus after this means I will read it and savour it.

SAUCER COUNTRY #14 – controversy! At last! Sorry to see this fade, although when it launched most figured it would never make double digits (qv Dominique leVeau). Wither Vertigo?

SEX #2 – controversial, but. Yeah, that’s it.

SHADOW #11 – the Spanish Civil war unwinds and this has been top drawer pulp. Great stuff.

STAR TREK COUNTDOWN TO DARKNESS #4 – good book, but seems totally unrelated to the film. For now.

STAR WARS #4 – wish I was at Toshii Station with my friends.

SUICIDE SQUAD #19 – I will see what the Unknown Soldier is up to, but again, preferred the Vertigo take.

WALKING DEAD #109 – more Negan; less ping-pong.

X #0 – Dark Horse is picking up steam, aren’t they?

COMICS! Not reading any this week as I need the promotion so I can buy more COMICS!

  6. LAST WEEK!
Bought some books, but only GODZILLA HALF CENTURY WAR #5 (OF 5) really stood out

    THIS WEEK!

BATMAN #19 – That’s a cool rack focus effect on the cover, Mr. Capullo, and Maleev draws the backup? Maybe. I had sworn this off after DOTF in favor of the much better…

BATMAN AND (RED) ROBIN #19 – …which has been excellent the last couple of issues, although I’m not sure how well the revolving team-up format will work in the long run

BATMAN LIL GOTHAM #1 – Art looks splendid, so I’ll give it a flip through at the store

GI JOE COBRA FILES #1 – Heard great things about the previous series, so I’ll give it a “Go, Joe!”

INVINCIBLE UNIVERSE #1 – If this is compelling enough maybe I’ll give the whole Invincible thing a try

JENNIFER BLOOD #25 – Not a regular reader, but that last issue was a real eye-opener

SAGA #12 – Can’t add much more to the love the previous posters have given this. Hope Vaughn and Staples enjoy their much-deserved vacation

SAUCER COUNTRY #14 – Dropped off of this midway. The slow pacing made me think the story wouldn’t get anywhere before it got canceled (self-fulfilling prophecy?) I’d surely give “Season 2” a shot if they find a home. Image seems a good home for sci-fi right now

WALKING DEAD #109 – Not feeling this as much recently. Is the meh-ness of the TV show bleeding over into my enjoyment of the comic?

  7. I bought HAWKEYE #8 because of a bunch of positive comments and raves. Nice artwork, some nice scenes–but the story’s flimsy plot fell apart at the end, and the crime lords meeting seemed to be written for kids.

There seem to be ordinary readers and comics aesthetes who think that vivid characters are enough for a good story, either because they think that plots are optional, or because doing a solid plot in a superhero story is difficult, if not impossible. Those viewpoints both treat superhero fiction as trash.
