  1. “With Jake The Dog and
    Hibbs the hu-man the
    fun will never end!”

    Aw yeah, COMICS time!

    ADVENTURE TIME #3
(Comics! Sometimes they are for EVERYBODY! What a novel idea!)
    BATWOMAN #8
    (Interest fading fast!)
    FRANKENSTEIN AGENT OF SHADE #8
(AKA The Comic Jeff Lester Just Can’t Quit.)
    GLORY #25
(It’s a bit like Wonder Woman but with 100% less Internet upsetting misogyny!)
    HELLRAISER ANNUAL #1
(We old folks know that should be #2, don’t we Corey (Ottawa)?)
    NORTHLANDERS #50
(Final issue spectacular, yes? Going to miss this one. It had a spectacular run of artists, beautiful covers and the stories were refreshingly atypical. Fifty issues is nothing to be sneezed at these days. Particularly for a historical drama series set before the internal combustion engine, or even shoelaces. Well done everyone on NORTHLANDERS!)

Because it’s never the end with COMICS!!!

  2. @John K – Your Glory statement is dead on the money.

ADVENTURE TIME #3 – I truly hope finding this book will stop being the bane of my existence. It’s extra depressing since each issue has cool covers done by some of my favorite artists. I’m trying to make a cool collage style poster from the different covers, but with the price I had to pay for one copy of #2 ($8 plus shipping), I’m starting to think it’s going to be a goal best left unfulfilled. But it’s not all sour, this is an *awesome* book. It’s like everything awesome about comics all in one package each month. I believe #3 has a Michael DeForge cover, so fingers crossed!

GLORY #25 – HELL. YES. This is possibly my favorite book of the revamped Extreme. The art is crazy gorgeous (the women look like *real* women!!) and the story so far has passed the Alison Bechdel test with flying covers. I’m very, very high on Glory and have been giving issues to my female friends.

HAUNT #23 – I bought a run of this book on the cheap. I like Joe Casey, so I’m willing to give it a few issues to see how it is.

    PETER PANZERFAUST #3
THIEF OF THIEVES #3 – A review on tcj.com claimed the only people who could like these books are people who want to write comics themselves. The writer of said review needs to get his head out of his ass. Sometimes I don’t want comics that are high art, sometimes I just want something fluffy to read.

SAGA #2 – Once again, Hell to the Yes.

SECRET #1 – I *really* like Hickman’s creator owned work. He’s still on my list of “buy all creator owned work sight unseen.”

SAMMY THE MOUSE TP VOL 01 – I’m embarrassed I don’t have this book yet. I will be rectifying that oversight this week!

  3. @Chris Hero: One issue of ADVENTURE TIME for $8 plus ?!? Dang, I’d get the TPB! It’s a great book, though! (Not $8+ worth of great though, kids!).

Goshdarnit! I mistook HELLRAISER for HELLBLAZER again (AGAIN!)! It’s HELLRAISER ANNUAL #1 not old Con-Job! Sigh, best thing about the Internet? Having your senililty tracked in public!

Anyway, looks like DC read my stuff because I’m pretty sure that SHOWCASE PRESENTS THE LOSERS has some of that John Severin stuff I was blah-blah-ing about a bit back. Clearly this reprint is down only to me. Hey DC, while you’re paying attention to my mighty voice: Where’s that Chaykin BLACKHAWK collection and that CC Beck CAPTAIN MARVEL: MONSTER SOCIETY OF EVIL collection? Hey? No, I don’t give a chuff about Geoff Johns’ moody reboot. Oh, “purist” am I! Why, I oughtta. See, there I go – totes senile.

  4. Avenging Spider-Man #6:
Actually looking forward to the ‘Omega Effect’ mini event. But after that, I want my kooky Spider-Man team-ups! Like when MTU was Aunt May and Franklin Richards vs Galactus.

    Frankenstein #8:
It’ll do, I guess. Just good and promising enough to warrant not dropping. This is another good example of the 2.99/3.99 break: at 3.99, this would have gotten the boot.

  5. @JOHN K(UK)

Yeah, dude, $8 plus shipping. I know it was foolish, but I’m really bullish right now on both reading print comics and making my collage of Adventure Time covers. But since I only have the one cover for #2 and I’m wary of my ability to suddenly find all the covers for #3, I’m pretty sure the collage is going to be uncompleted. I can’t express how maddening it is to find Adventure Time in the States. I honestly believe it’s harder to find than Shanowar’s Oz and Allred’s Graphique Musique were when they were released. Back then, there were oddball shops that used to specialize in that stuff.

  6. SAGA #2 – I like this book. I don’t LOVE IT like the rest of the comic blogsphere, but I also don’t get weak in the knees every time someone namedrops the initials BKV in quick succession, so I was never on that hype train. But it’s good! It’s a good comic book. Probably reads better in trades, but eh. I’m gonna keep checking it out.

SECRET AVENGERS #25 – But Rick Remender? I buy anything that man puts out. This is looking to be a strong conclusion according to the preview, with Venom adding another interesting wild card to the team, and the Avengers fight Adaptoids and a Master Mold!

UNCANNY X-MEN #10 – I wish this book had better art. Also, I can’t remember the last X-men book where the villains were consistently more interesting then the protagonists, but here we are.

WINTER SOLDIER #4 – Bucky vs a super Communist machine gun-totting gorilla. I love comics.

AVENGING SPIDER-MAN #6 – And so begins the crossover between Daredevil, Punisher, and this week’s Avenging Spider-Man. Luckily, I like all the characters and the creative team, even if I’m not overjoyed about having to buy an issue of Rucka’s Punisher.

WOLVERINE #304 – The final Jason Aaron solo Wolverine book. He’s been writing Wolverine stories, literally from the very beginning of his career, and he’s done some great, versatile work with the character off and on over the years until they eventually just handed him the book a few years ago. He’s still writing Logan in the excellent WATXM, but it’s not the same. The stories weren’t all golden, but he always had Wolverine’s voice down to a science, and tried his damnedest to push this unbreakable character in new, interesting directions. I hope this is a good epilogue, and Cullen Bunn/Paul Pellitier really bring their A-game when they take over later this month.

AMERICAS GOT POWERS #1 – I’ll give a Bryan Hitch-drawn ongoing a try, sure. I LOVE his artwork, but I haven’t really enjoyed anything he’s worked on since Ultimates 2.

SCARLET SPIDER #4 – This book is much better then it has any right to be. A Peter Parker clone with a troubled past, fighting the darkness that lies in the South. Eye-balling concept, but goddamn, Yost and Stegman are making it work. It’s a fast-paced action comic with enough real heart and character to back up it’s 90s hard-edge. Stegman is just the SHIT. He’s got McFarlene’s wild Spider-Man proportions and kinetic action, but he can actually draws humans that don’t look like anime characters with Down Syndrome. He’s amazing, and I hope he and Yost are on this book for a very long time.

CARNAGE USA #5 – This has just been ok. It’s the bad Zeb Wells who drags out 2, maaaybe 3 issues of material to 5, and I’ve never been a big fan of Crain’s dark artwork. But, it promises to have SYMBOITE ZOO ANIMALS. SYMBOITE GORILLA. SYMBOITE LION. That’s worth the price of admission alone.

  7. AMERICAS GOT POWERS #1 (OF 6) – I’m in it for Ross, not for Hitch!

AVENGERS ASSEMBLE #2 – Because I enjoyed the first issue, even though it’s painfully uncool to do so.

BATMAN AND ROBIN #8 – The only problem with the first storyline was it didn’t have enough for seven issues – so a new storyline is hopefully just what the book needed.

CONAN THE BARBARIAN #3 – Enjoyable enough to see where it’s going.

DEMON KNIGHTS #8 – Finally free of that darn village!

FRANKENSTEIN AGENT OF SHADE #8 – I read #1-7 last weekend, and am loving this book.

    GLORY #25 – Really good.

HAUNT #23 – Hopefully this issue has Nathan Fox art. (Last month’s cover lied!)

LEGION LOST #8 – I still need to bulk read this and make up my mind.

MISTER TERRIFIC #8 – It never fully clicked, but it was a fun book whilst it lasted.

SAGA #2 – Had to go digital with #1 as the store sold out in a day. Now I need to decide whether to switch back or stay digital with this one.

SAUCER COUNTRY #2 – After issue one this could go either way, so I reckon this ish will give a better feeling for the book.

SCARLET SPIDER #4 – I’m with Jeremy. This book is better than you’d expect.

SECRET #1 – Hickman’s worth checking in on.

SECRET SERVICE #1 (OF 7) – Maybe. For Gibbons, not for Millar.

SUPERBOY #8 – The last issue was pretty yucky, and nothing seems to be happening. Heading for the chopping block.

  8. CONAN THE BARBARIAN #3
I’m down for any Conan this committed to archery.

    GLORY #25
First issue the art felt a little boxy to me but I think it just came down to what I was used to seeing and looking for. Liking it very well. Probably a strong 3-4 in my “new reading” behind Prophet and Saga.

    SAGA #2
Having totally supported Hibbs’ aggressive marketing strategy I have to think there was at least one guy who was like, “TV head robots doing it?”

    SAUCER COUNTRY #2
If anyone follows Paul Cornell on twitter then you know he is ALWAYS writing. Multiple platforms – TV, short stories, novel, comics and it goes on. He’s a disciplined dude and that earns him a lot of leverage with me.

    SECRET #1
I have no idea what it is. I’ve either avoided it or just missed it but everybody seems pretty interested so unless it’s under the Marvel umbrella I’ll certainly take a look.

    SHADE #7 (OF 12)
Remember that time I blathered on about how Robinson needs to get comfy in his slippers again on properties he’s written in the past? I think I was correct on that score and well before the halfway point this started going in the right direction for me.

    SUPERBOY #8
@Ben Lipman – I kinda feel you on this one. I’m all about RB Silva, though. He’s hitting, for me, like Joe Mad did when he broke in on X-Men. Different, stylized, not overly busy. It’s almost like he’s blending Bacchalo and I don’t know, Dan DeCarlo. That may be a horrible comparison but I find his faces emote in a way that I always associate with DeCarlo’s house style. There’s a dynamic quality in his layouts as well. He doesn’t waste pages on no action splashes. Hmmm, maybe I’m betraying an uncultured comics background.

JACK KIRBYS FOURTH WORLD OMNIBUS TP VOL 02
I was under the impression that this was out last week? My guy at the store said all his copies went to folks who had it on order.

We really should reconvene here in the comments and bullpen our weekly reads. There is enough overlap that we would have multiple perspectives. Just a couple lines on each like we do with our buy list and then just bounce conversation off each other from there.

    Any interest?

  9. My longboxes may be secretly judging me, as, quite to my surprise and theirs, the influx of Marvels has dried to a Daredevil sized trickle, but Image Comics have begun to show with alaming regularity.

    This week’s haul will include:

68 SCARS #1 – yes, its Full Metal Jacket. With zombies.

BIONIC WOMAN #1 – Paul Tobin: bring on the fem-BOTS!

BTVS SEASON 9 FREEFALL #8 – er, no more Fembots in Buffy please. And * oops * SPOILER!

CONAN THE BARBARIAN #3 – wonderful stuff. Fabulous, moody and exciting. Although the ‘tongue in the teeth’ thing Cloonan draws Bêlit doing all the time is geting distracting.

FRANKENSTEIN AGENT OF SHADE #8 – Mad I tell you! MAD!

GLORY #25 – yes, I have dropped Wonder Woman and am buying (and liking!) Glory. Life is farce. The cover to #24 really weirded me out, though. Eeeeeek.

GREEN LANTERN #8 – the problem with a slow boil is sometimes the pot goes dry, and you don’t get anything cooked. This may be nearing the end for me.

KEVIN SMITH BIONIC MAN #8 – just like the Internet, Col Steve Austin has a kill switch.

LORD OF THE JUNGLE #3 – more ERB public domain lawsuit bait from Dynamite. But a good book so far. The pencil tone on the art is great, even if the coloring has been a little too Flex-o-Graphic for me.

NORTHLANDERS #50 – will be missed. But John K is right (as he usually is!): fifty issues is pretty damn good these days.

SAGA #2 – has its own big shoes to fill.

SAUCER COUNTRY #2 – I liked it. And glad the announcement of her candidacty was not folded into her announcing her abduction. here’s hoping Cornell lets these two themes develop a bit before crashing them together.

SUICIDE SQUAD #8 – This is pretty crazy stuff. I like it, but I could totally get where others would not: Deadshot wears the Joker’s bloody face like a mask, while Steampunk Stripper Harley sexes him. Hey Kids! COMICS!

WINTER SOLDIER #4 – @Jeremy said it all: “Bucky vs a super Communist machine gun-totting gorilla.” I could NOT care less about Bucky, but this has been great stuff. Guice has shifted his style again, to give it a Gene Colan style energy and he is tearing through the book. That aid, the covers so far (and not by him) are AWFUL.

and @Jeremy has convinced me to totally pick up SECRET AVENGERS now that I know its a bunch of Adaptoids. Fighting.

Sadly, we now get to THE LIST OF THE FALLEN: Batgirl and Batwoman will both be staying on the rack this week.

J_Smitty: I’ll see you back here Wednesday night/ Thursday am! Comics! I love ‘em so I’ll talk about ‘em!

  10. 68 Scars – Yes. Yes. Yes.
Batman and Robin – Really enjoying this so far. Beautiful artwork by Gleason.
Northlanders – Can’t believe this is it. What a run. Hope for something similiar in the future.
SAGA – Hate all the hype deserved or not. Waiting this one out.
Saucer Country – Intriguing, but maybe not enough.

  11. @Ben Lipman – Your comment about enjoying Avengers even though it’s painfully uncool really struck me. I’ve been thinking on it and it’s like – it’s just a shame we have to proactively defend our choices. I feel like the new tcj.com and their ilk have really brought comics discussion to this awful place where if it’s not some new comic artist with great potential, then we suck for liking it. And it’s like…we’re just trying to read books we like, not split the atom, so who cares? I understand the person who’s advocating for better comics, but I don’t understand the person who attacks anyone who might read a book as a knuckle dragging mongoloid.

I’m going to buy an issue of Avengers Assemble just so you’re not alone.

    @J_Smitty

You know, I think you have something really good to your idea of us Savage Critic commenters having our own discussions. I can tell you I suck at message boards. I get all worried about not commenting enough and my comment count being too low and people seeing when I last logged in, so I’m not to sure about a message board for us, but I think you have a winner of an idea at the core of your appeal. I’d be open to hearing more about ideas from you.
