  1. Some good books buried in there.

DARK HORSE PRESENTS #1 FRANK MILLER CVR
(the return of Concrete! Hurray! And under a Frank Miller Xerxes cover guaranteed to – once again – annoy the Ayatollahs!)

DMZ #64 (I always enjoyed the backdrop more than the characters, so now I’m getting my wish. Good stuff)

DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS #6 (written by a screen-writer and yet it comes out every month. Pay attention Big Two)

HELLBLAZER #278 (This is a golden age. John C is back to being a right bastard, the big bads are big, bad and really truly scary, and the art and dialogue are bare-knuckled awesome)

LEGION OF SUPER HEROES #12 (some nice team super-heroics here, with just the right bit of nostalgia. Levitz gets that it’s a matter of tone, not ‘easter eggs’ in the art or dialogue)

SPIRIT #13 (a beautiful book. Great writing, and tone-perfect art)

THUNDERBOLTS #156 (looking to increase my ‘right bastard’ quota, this book is doing well for me. Hyperion really got the snot kicked out of him, too)

TINY TITANS #39 (it is the ALL PINK issue, which will be as big a bed-time hit in my house as the BIG CURLY HAIR issue was. Blathazar and Franco really merited that Eisner.)

ZATANNA #12 (Jamale Igle hit that last one off the wall. This book could be a showcase for him)

and for both the guys out there who always wanted a two inch tall die-cast figure of Saturn Girl in her pink bikini, well, this is the week for YOU!

  2. I want to do this is the style of my favorite comic commenter, John K(UK):

AKIRA KODANSHA ED GN VOL 06
(I want to get this series, but I’m scared of the printing errors)

    ASTRO CITY SHINING STARS HC
(Busiek is the best superhero writer ever)

NAOKI URASAWA 20TH CENTURY BOYS GN VOL 14
    (Oh Hell yeah!)

Nothing else looks appealing. Sorry, bad week to try I guess….

  3. Looks like another week without anything piquing my interest. I’m wrapping up volume 1 of 20th Century Boys, so seeing volume 14 releasing is great, but I have 12 more volumes to go. Maybe this week I’ll pick up an Essential or Showcase volume. From the Wait, What podcast Graeme and Jeff have me really interested in reading/experiencing Showcase JLA volume 5.

  4. After a couple of slack weeks where nothing drove me to the comics store, there’s all kinds of stuff here:
DARK HORSE PRESENTS #1: I’m really happy this is returning, as the original was one of my favorite anthologies ever & I miss it. There’s a somewhat astonishing level of talent here (Frank Miller’s 300 sequel! Paul Chadwick’s Concrete! Neal Adams! Harlan Ellison! Etc!) but at $7.99 it’s going to be an uphill battle to keep reaching that level. They really need to introduce a “must have” serial on the lines of Sin City to keep folks coming back.
FABLES #104: I’m curious if this costumed superhero arc will result in a spike in sales (& I’ll probably be annoying if it does)
GREEN LANTERN #65 (WAR OF GL)
GREEN LANTERN CORPS #59 (WAR OF GL): I’m approaching Event Fatigue Critical Mass with GL, so I may pass on Corps which I’ve not been buying or maybe drop both after this
HELLBLAZER #278: Corey is right that this is a new Golden Age for JC, as well as breaking a Peter Milligan slump
SIXTH GUN #11: Really enjoying this indie horror/western. Brian Hurtt has hit his stride as an artist, & I hope Cullen Bunn doesn’t get absorbed by the majors
SPIRIT #13: One of my very favorites right now, so I’m bummed about the First Wave cancellation news, but new issues keep hitting current solicitations, so I still have hopes this can be another Jonah Hex. This was a book I think ill served by DC’s “whole line $2.99” imperative, as the all-star black & white backups could have been a good selling point if properly promoted ($2.99 did the historically anthological Action & Detective no favors either), but they were always the potatoes to the meat of the David Hine/Moritat lead. And those Ladronn covers make some good gravy!
SUPER DINOSAUR #1: Looks fun, & I’ll give any new Robert Kirkman series a look on the strength of his Walking Dead.

  5. RE FABLES #104 in my last post:
It should have read “I’ll be annoyed” if the superhero arc provides a spike in sales. I’m annoYING regardless of what happens in Fables.

  6. Well, if Brian Hibbs is asking it would be rude not to tell him:

    DARK HORSE PRESENTS #1
(Franklin “Delano” Miller, Neal “Restraint” Adams, Richard “ Corky” Corben, Harlan “Lagniappe” Ellison and Howard “Victor” Chaykin? It could only be better if they’d baked me a cake in the shape of my face!)
    DEADPOOLMAX #7
(I’m a bit behind on my comics but I’m guessing Kyle Baker is still a drawing machine?)
    HELLBLAZER #278
(278 issues in and it’s as good as it’s ever been? Remarkable. Well, I remarked on it.)
    IRON MAN 2.0 #4
(Being tech-savvy I access the exclusive content contained within IRON MAN v.2.0 using the popular App: “My Eyes”.)
    SIXTH GUN #11
(Brian Hurtt! The George Stubbs of Modern Weird Westerns! Not a crowded field, no. But, still.)
    SPIRIT #13
(Fine as this is I’m with James Woodward in pining for the B/W back-ups. It’s still good though!)
    TINY TITANS #39
    (Aw, yeah!)
    WOLVERINE #8
(Imaginary New Back-up! Wolverine’s Diary: “Wednesday: Possessed again. Cancel Zumba class.”)

One bright and shining day I’ll also get this:

DAN CLOWES MISTER WONDERFUL LOVE STORY TP

(Why thank you, Chris Hero. If I work on my self-control I may one day be worthy of your words. I enjoy your comments too, sir.)

Comics! More exciting than two toffs getting hitched, I’ll be bound!
