Arriving 4/27/2011

Huh, this is a pretty hefty-ass week, with lots of comical goodness! I’m especially happy that my new favorite comic, XOMBI, is shipping this week!

(Though I really question the wisdom of shipping two different “point one” issues of Avengers-franchise titles, especially since there is ALSO a “regular” issue of SECRET AVENGERS this week)

  1. HUGE week! I’m looking forward to 14 (!) titles.

  2. The Toth book. Been looking forward to this one for a long time.

  3. RASL and Haunt in the same week? I feel like there’s a joke to be made there….

  4. FF#2
    Xombi#2

    I guess it’s a good thing I didn’t go last week…

  5. Both Flash and Batman, Inc. will be waiting for me this Wednesday. I might pick up Captain America too. With that uninteresting (to me) Bucky back-up done, I don’t mind paying $3.99 for two Ed Brubaker written Captain America tales.

  6. Oh, and I picked up Xombi #1 based on Brian’s recommendation, but I’ve yet to read it. I’ll take care of that before W

  7. Oh, and I picked up Xombi #1 based on Brian’s recommendation, but I’ve yet to read it. I’ll take care of that before Wednesday and maybe grab issue #2 of that.

  8. 16 Titles… mostly from titles I’ve been enjoying the heck out of!

    ACTION COMICS #900
    AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #659 BIG
    BATMAN INCORPORATED #5
    BRIGHTEST DAY #24
DC COMICS PRESENTS NIGHT FORCE #1
    DETECTIVE COMICS #876
FF #2 – Last time I try it, unless it improves. #1 was a bit of a dud, but Slott wrote the team great in ASM, so I just want to see if this book shows any of that potential.
    FLASH #11 (FLASHPOINT) (RES)
    HATE ANNUAL #9
JUSTICE LEAGUE GENERATION LOST #24 (BD)
    MARINEMAN #5
    MORNING GLORIES #9
POWER MAN AND IRON FIST #4 (OF 5)
    RUSE #2 (OF 4)
    VENOM #2
    XOMBI #2

  9. This week I’ll be laying snares for the following:

    AMERICAN VAMPIRE #14
    (Our Nosferatu At War.)
    BATMAN INCORPORATED #5
    (Yeah, okay, it’s pretty great.)
    CAPTAIN AMERICA #617
(Last ish I greatly enjoyed HVC’s story concerning erectile dysfunction in post traumatic stress disorder sufferers.)
DC COMICS PRESENTS NIGHT FORCE #1
(NIGHT FORCE! About as scary as a sleepy horse! But it’s gonna make ya scream! ‘Cos Gene’s The Dean!)
    MIGHTY THOR #1
(On probation. I’m hoping for a JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY (it’s Hibbs-Approved, kids!) rather than another Journey Into Mediocrity.)
    RASL #10
    (Re-order And Sell Loads!)
    SCALPED #48
(One day your HBO will come, Jason Aaron.)
    WARLORD OF MARS #6
(He’s jolly ripped for a Virginian gentleman of the late 1860’s isn’t he?)
    XOMBI #2
(The Tastemaker Hibbs hath spoken and his words are ripe with Truth!)

And of course (following the inevitable harrowing negotiations with The Sensible One):

    Books / Mags / Stuff
GENIUS ISOLATED LIFE & ART OF ALEX TOTH HC

(Also: that SHOWCASE PRESENTS THE WITCHING HOUR VOL.1 from a few weeks back? Loads of Alex Toth in that for a reasonable price. Just saying.)

Comics! The reason God/Nature/Sheer Happenstance blessed you with eyes!

  10. Brian,

After fifteen years in the business, I’m sure “logic” and “practicality” have little to do with the way the big two do things these days. Especially as far as retailers are concerned. DC, to be fair, is much better than Marvel at these things, however.

    The Comix Gallery

  11. ACTION COMICS #900
    (and, lo…a new beginning!)

    AMERICAN VAMPIRE #14
(Our Nosferatu At War..I think I owe John K(UK) a nickel)

    BATMAN INCORPORATED #5
(That Batwomen tales in #4 was pretty great comics. Awesome fusing of art styles. Anyone else notice how the 50s flashbacks were colored with big pixels so as to look newsprinty?)

    DETECTIVE COMICS #876
(Snyder and Jock are back, and a killer whale is dead)

    GODZILLA KINGDOM OF MONSTERS #2
(giving it a second chance, but #1 was not to my taste. Not sure if Phil Hester is really the right artist for this book)

    KING CONAN SCARLET CITADEL #3
(nicely done, Dark Horse, nicley done indeed)

    NEW YORK FIVE #4
    (great work)

    PLANET OF THE APES #1
(a criminally treated property…we’ll see if this is ANY better than the last few tries have been)

    WARLORD OF MARS #6
(needs a bit more sense of wonder and scale, and a bit less people posing nekkid. Dejah Thoris Princess of Helium should NOT be a visual punchline. I would read the hell out of a book drawn totally by Paul Renaud)

    XOMBI #2
(Nun the Less says: “Don’t Ask, Just Buy It!”)

  12. ACTION 900
Get some cosmically powered Luthor-y goodness. Also Damon Lindeloff stops by to be herded through the celebrity author machine.

    Age of X Universe 2
I have a sickness for alt universe storytelling. Especially when Cyclops has something in his past that makes him even more of a human car wreck.

    Batman Inc 5
Scheduling issues aside this series is humming along. I’m waiting for the inevitable left turn to crazy Grant’s Batman always takes. “No, seriously, manly man love god Bruce this time. I swear!”

    FF 2
Curious to see if sales fall off the cliff as predicted. Also curious to see how far afield Marvel lets Hickman run. Will Dr. Doom get an FF uniform? Will said uniform cause him to weep a single, solitary, poignant tear? I DEMAND ANSWERS.

    New York 5
This is the book, man. I am in no way the target demo and I’m flipping out for this thing. It’s the art – you know?

    Spider-Girl 6
Ah, sweet Miss Corazon, we hardly knew ye. Although, good news! She’s got a part of that insipid everybody becomes spider powered…thing…in…a couple (goes into coma)

    Uncanny X-Men
Jeez, Kieron! First you get me to buy Journey into Mystery and also get me to love it. Now you make me buy X-Men again? You’re Gillen me! (OOOOOOOOOH)

    Xombi
    Pretty. Weird. Like.

  13. RECAP

    ACTION 900
Not really feeling the issue as a whole. I enjoyed the Cornell and damnation Gary Frank can draw Superman forever. BTW, nice legs, Lois. The Doomsday segments left me cold as well. They almost had me with the demonstration comic but then the last page kinda killed it. It’s not Kent State over there, you know? In the end, I’m certainly on board for the future.

    Age of X Universe 2
First story – gross. An implausible change of heart and death for death’s sake. Second Story very slick. Dazzler and Dr. Strange, nice story-telling tricks, trades on expectations of alt universe. Definitely should have flipped the page count and, I feel, dumped the main story.

    Batman Inc 5
Awesome. The character play between the second level Bat Inc team was excellent, the man draws a mean Batwoman, Batman had a nice turn in his own comic and we’re given reason to suspect another “wheels within wheels” arc is dead ahead. Left turn to weirdness, here we come.

    FF 2
Didn’t hate it, that’s for sure. Nice final page. I do still struggle with seeing entire pages spent on width of page panels where the only thing happening are reaction shots. It seems frivolous. At the depth Epting uses expressions are minimal so you get 5 or so panels of people turning their heads and exchanging about 3 lines of dialogue. They can be momentum killers for me and take me out of the flow of the book. If it’s your thing then go forth! Enjoy!

    New York 5 – (4of4)
Oh, damn you NY5. Word is out that somebody dies. Not as hackneyed as you might think but I can’t help feeling the last issue fumbles the ball a bit trying to wrap up all the threads here by hanging them on (what I felt to be) the weakest and most softly developed character. For some reason as the series was wrapping up I kept hearing the “Strangers With Candy” theme in my head and unfortunately not in a good way. “These are life lessons. Let’s all pay attention as time rushes on.” Diminished my love for the series overall but not enough to make me outright deny or decry it. The art is still pretty freaking great despite the look of a little rushing to the finish line. At the end of a limited series I always ask myself if I would buy it again. In this case, I would.

    Spider-Girl 6
Really very good. Engaging. Seeing Clayton Henry art tends to make for a great reading experience and Tobin knows how to use it. The superhero costume under a bathrobe bit never really gets old, does it?

    Uncanny X-Men
Gillen’s got X-men style riffing down pat. Oh, my heart. No Wolverine! Yay! Told you it could be done. About as big a fan of Whedon’s run as possible and always felt Ord danced the line between being played for laughs and danger. As such he doesn’t really inspire much fear here. Also, I thought “the cure” was established as being permanent. Oops, sorry franchise character. Nice knowing you?

    Xombi
Good again, totally worth it. Art is just so great. The explanation of the coins is pretty great but also you have to wonder about the “seeding” process. Reminds me of the Upright Citizens Brigade “Ass Pennies” sketch. You decide whether it’s good or bad. ;-)

Additionally, I was feeling flush with cash and confidence this week so I bought the AWESOME Blazing Combat softcover by Fantagraphics and the Bulletproof Coffin TPB. I would have gotten it in singles but my LCS continued to under order and I have sworn off pull lists for the rest of my life. Both are well worth your time but the art in Blazing is just stupendous. Orlando, Toth, Heath, Severin, Colan…just a cavalcade of talent. By the way, John Cassaday owes Russ Heath something. Maybe a milkshake.

  14. J_Smitty –
I haven’t read those things you have read but I always enjoy hearing people’s thoughts about the comical periodicals. Thanks to you, sir.

No, wait, I have read BLAZING COMBAT and you are spot on there. BLAZING COMBAT is totally boo-coo rikky –tikk, f’sure! Russ Heath doesn’t get enough love, does he? None of the guys in there get enough love. It’s impossible for them to get enough love. They are that great. And that includes Archie Goodwin on words, editing and slide trombone too.

And isn’t BLAZING COMBAT the one with the Severin story where there’s three panels of a kid’s face as he fires a rifle and in the first panel he’s scared and lost but by the third panel he’s an emotionless killing machine. Three panels but they sure say a mouthful. (Were I proper writery-man you would know I am implicitly referencing your FF#2 art comments here. See, I had a point after all – twist!)

BLAZING COMBAT – it’s practically a manual on storytelling by some of the greatest masters of that undervalued craft. Ayup! Old man likes old comics – NEWSFLASH!(Put those sticks down, I like new comics too.)

  15. BATMAN, INC. #5! (And #4… I can’t trade-wait on this anymore.)

    XOMBI #2!

    BULLETPROOF COFFIN!

Regretfully, my LCS didn’t order NIGHT FORCE… in search of. (Is it worth the hassle?)

(And John K, you are dead on correct about the Severin story. I was astonished how fresh & vital some of that “old stuff” felt when I read the HC edition of BLAZING COMBAT a while back.)

And can anybody explain to me the SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN #1000 thing that apparently came out last week? Why is it “#1000” when the story is set “a few years back”???

  16. JohnK(UK)

Yes, it’s actually the cover (Severin Blam – Blam – Blam)

And the Goodwin! How could I neglect the Goodwin? It’s so easy to open that book and just be overwhelmed by the art. The print is so f’in good you can see striation in the ink line from the original. Just geek central. The writing process interview is similarly awesome:

Archie: “What do you want to draw?”

    Toth: “Jets~!”

Archie: “Cool, gimme a day or two”

Holy crap. In and out in 8-10 pages. You hear guys talking about how to break in and they always say, “Be able to tell a story start to finish with a limited page count.”

So, my counter question is – where the hell did that go?

  17. FF#2 – I think I’m dropping it.
It wasn’t that entertaining, and then I got to the two pages, mostly silent, of one conversation.
It wasn’t just that it was decompressed that pissed me off with it, it’s that the conversation would have worked better if it wasn’t so dragged out.

And then, for the second month in a row, Dan Slott wrote the Future Foundation better in ASM, than it’s being written in Future Foundation.

So yeah, I imagine sales will fall right off that cliff, and splatter at the bottom.
