  1. I just finally got my wife to read the first issue of LOCKE & KEY’s first miniseries on Friday. She was fully caught up with me by Sunday. Soooo ready for #4…

  2. LAST WEEK

    BATMAN INCORPORATED #9
I felt this was really good despite the art mash. I loved the portrayal of Nightwing and wish that it would basically end up as an arc that develops him moreso than Bruce. Since it’s Morrison’s kiss-off we may get some really crazy outro moments before the Snyder, “No really, this one is Batman,” return. Batman’s Darth Vader (from Revenge of the Sith) at the end was pretty crap.

    BPRD VAMPIRE #1 (OF 5)
I’ve not really been enamored with Ba and Moon in the past but as I’ve opened my eyes more to the stylings of Graham, Stokoe, Harren, Crook, et al it’s become more palatable. With these guys it’s more about choosing the one “right” line as opposed to just being busy. Script felt a mite thin but it’s got a nice set-up from ’48 so I have faith they’ll land it.

    GARTH ENNIS RED TEAM #2
With a few exceptions Ennis’ dialogue choices are just beautiful. Page layout for the “Rules” was pretty good too. Each of these characters has voice and depth and I’m enjoying it.

    THIS WEEK! CONDITIONALLY!

ABE SAPIEN DARK & TERRIBLE #1 (OF 3)
This will be my first intro to Abe as a character as everything since I’ve joined up has been him in a coma in a jar.

    DIAL H #11
Weird will domination games playing out here. Pretty daring for a nu52 title.

    EARTH 2 #11
James Robinson’s birthday party must have been amazing.

    GLORY #34
So, I totally thought last issue was the last issue. That woulda been ballsy. I was really into this and then Glory’s sister showed up and I checked out. Seeing it through.

GODZILLA HALF CENTURY WAR #5 (OF 5)
    Crush EVERYTHING!

    WORLDS FINEST #11
Levitz is a wizard if he keeps this jumble rolling in a positive direction.

ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN JOSE LUIS GARCIA LOPEZ HC
Holy Crap. I will drop everything else this week to get this. Garcia Lopez is probably my favorite everything when it comes to visual storytelling.

First, look at how the page flows for goodness sake, the upper right panel is the most effective motion turn I think I’ve ever seen. Reversing Wonder Woman with a pivot into the wide panel underneath allows her to throw Superman not only into the window but practically out of the damn comic via a well constructed panel break.

Second, he is the physical artistic embodiment of the DC comics that I actually gave a shit about.

    Third, this anecdote:

“…in MODERN MASTERS #5. Legendary European artist, Jean Giraud, also known as Moebius, was looking at Garcia-Lopez’s work. He asked Helfer, “This Garcia-Lopez, he uses models, no?” When Helfer said, “No,” with a smile, Moebius’ only answer?

    “SON OF A BITCH!”

  3. Light week this week…

DIAL H #11–I’ve decided if I ever write a comic I want to do it China Mieville style. Take a property in some corner of the DC or Marvel universe that hardly anyone remembers or cares about so you can get as weird as you want on it. Seems like this was also Grant Morrison’s MO back in his early days. I might add I’m digging the Harold and Maude thing Nelson and Roxie have going on.

MEMORIAL IMAGINARY FIENDS #2 (OF 3)–I didn’t realize a new series was out until I saw #1 on the shelf. I’m glad to see it’s back. This is so beautifully drawn and whimsical, it just makes me happy to read it. I have the feeling it may be a “girl comic” but I don’t care.

SWAMP THING #19–I guess we’re starting a new storyline now?

COMPLETE PEANUTS HC VOL 19 1987-1988–Oh, geez, another one of these. I’m only up to the 1977-78 one. I guess it’s not like I have to buy it right on schedule. I love Peanuts, but a massive chunk every 6 months is a little too much. (See my review of the last one I read: http://nicholasbruner.blogspot.com/2013/02/what-im-reading-complete-peanuts-1977-78.html)

  4. @J_Smitty: That’s a hellacious sequence! I sure bet that book is a feast for the eyes! The mind, maybe not so much.

(Here it comes…)If only DC Comics would collect TWILIGHT by JLG-L and HVC! It might actually have an audience in these days of STARSTRUCK, PROPHET, GLORY etc getting fan acclaim. Or maybe everyone would still just get upset because HVC made Space cabby a shithead. Space Cabby was always a shithead!

    Anyway, thanks for that, J_Smitty!

  5. @J_Smitty Great Moebius anecdote there.

Anyhow, Brian, this’ll be a light week for me. Definitely “Dial H,” “Earth 2,” and “Fashion Beast.” Don’t know if I want to finally break down and get the Batman/Judge Dredd HC that’s been out for a while.

  6. How about an Atarie Force trade? I loved that series. Wish Garcia-Lopez along with Golden would do more work these days. They are my two favorite artists.

  7. Oops, meant to say Atari Force.

  8. @John

Absolutely. On the subject of Twilight, I did find it cheap on eBay and got the Chaykin Blackhawk thrown in for free so my heart is kind of ok with “dumpster diving” for it. Garcia Lopez really invested himself in this, however, so I could definitely see a nice “remastered” edition as being a compliment to him.

    @Brian

I would imagine that’s all tied up in licensing hell. They likely missed their chance to snap it up when Atari was finally imploding back around the turn of the century. Still, you might be interested in this:

    http://www.atariage.com/comics/

Art on Atari’s first “volume” was handled by no less than Ross “f’ing” Andru and Gil “f’ing” Kane

Also notable on this page, Swordquest by George “f’ing” Perez.

    Goooood sh*t.

  9. LAST WEEK:

It all seemed just ‘okay enough’. MASSIVE #10, JUDGE DREDD #5, MARK WAID GREEN HORNET #1, SAVAGE HAWKMAN #18, TRANSFUSION #3 and even (surprisingly) FF #5 were all just okay enough. POWERS BUREAU #3 was of a higher standard, and probably a Savage GOOD. But wow, I did not like EAST OF WEST even a little bit.

MISTER X HARD CANDY ONE SHOT and PLANETOID #5, both started before family called me away, each looked very good as well, but rate an ‘incomplete’ for now. Did catch up on all of MISTER X: CONDEMNED #1-4 from Dark Horse and it was VERY GOOD.

As expected, the STAR WARS KENNER ROCKET-FIRING BOBA FETT 12-INCH ACTION FIGURE was pure weapons grade awesome.

    THIS WEEK:

ACTION COMICS #19 – this Diggle fella sounds like a breath of fresh air.

DIAL H #11 – the little book that dares.

GLORY #34 – damn. Going to miss this book. Thanks Joe and Ross.

GODZILLA HALF CENTURY WAR #5 (OF 5) – Stokoe!

GREEN ARROW #19 – Lemire has finished his 180 degree turn, kicking up much dust, and Sorentino is killing on the art.

PHANTOM STRANGER #7 – deMatteis is on. And Ha/Cannon art makes me very, very happy. But last issue took me somewhere short of 45 seconds to read.

SNAPSHOT #3 – I like this, even if the buzz (read: eBay frenzy) has died down.

THE LONE RANGER #14 – back to done in ones, after learning the lesson that ALL-STAR WESTERN refuses to take on board.

ULTIMATE COMICS X-MEN #25 – I was really let down by last issue, figuring it was my jumping on point for Wood and Asrar. Sadly, it reminded me why I left the Ultimate Books years ago.

    MAGS AND SUCH:

BACK ISSUE #63 – the ‘British Invasion’ issue. Looking forward to Lloyd reminiscing about V, and the Marshal Law feature.

    THE FALLEN and THE HOPEFULS:

I’m done with INDOMITABLE HULK. And AGE OF ULTRON is totally a flip mag after that first issue(although some folks may like paying $4 for a one page reveal). May give MISS FURY a chance, but suspect it is heading the way MASKS did, which doesn’t actually interest me. The JOSE LUIS GARCIA LOPEZ book looks stellar, but as DC COMCIS PRESENTS #24 was a cherished childhood fave, I’m sad to see it absent. There’s always the SHOWCASE,….

COMICS: They go great with Hostess Fruit Pies!
