  1. hey Brian, can we have mini reviews from you every week?
Even oneliner’s + verdict, would work for me…

  2. Only poverty can keep me from clawing at the defenceless legs of:

ALL NEW BATMAN THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD #7
(It’s The Golden Age Green Lantern! That’s nice!)
    BATMAN INCORPORATED #6
    (Bat-tastic!)
    DOC SAVAGE #14
(How’s that new artist working out?)
    HELLBOY BEING HUMAN ONE SHOT
    (Corben? Corben. Corben!)
    JOHN BYRNE NEXT MEN #6
(Should anyone ever need to know anything about John Byrne’s work they need only gaze upon the cover to this issue to learn everything about John Byrne’s work.)
    JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY #623
    (The Hibbs says thee Yay!)
    NEW AVENGERS #12
(“Comics Legend” Howard Victor Chaykin is pretty much the living definition of right man, wrong place and wrong time. i.e. Marvel in 2011.)
    NORTHLANDERS #40
(That’s 40 issues of quality, folks. C’mon give NORTHLANDERS some love. Open your heart and pucker up!)
    PUNISHERMAX #13
(Like The Kids say: I predict a riot! Yeah, I’m hep, I’m down! Nixon out! Nixon out!)
WARLORD OF MARS DEJAH THORIS #3
(I hear Dynamite are expanding the WoM line with a book about (the incomparable) Dejah Thoris’ sister. Y’know the one, she seems familiar but it’s just an illusion? Dejah Vue? Ba-da-Bing! You’ve been a wunnerful audience don’t forget to tip your waitress!)

Had I not already bought them I’d also buy JEW GANGSTER and YOSSEL by the shadowy man of mystery known only as “Joe Kubert”.

COMICS! Shaking my face with their papery awesomeness!

  3. Spam filter looks like tt doesn’t like my http://freesf.strandedinoz.com/wordpress actual website address it seems, but blogger is ok? Whacky, but seen wordpress trust itself less than other sites before. :)

    BIRDS OF PREY #12
    HELLBOY BEING HUMAN ONE SHOT
MICE TEMPLAR VOL 3 #4 MICHAEL AVON OEMING CVR
    NEW MUTANTS #25
    REBELS #28
WARLORD OF MARS DEJAH THORIS #3
    X-MEN LEGACY #248

    These, I think.

    Never read a Northlanders…

..and I think jokes Dejah jokes like that would be about six capital crimes in one for the Tharks!

  4. I dropped Flash with the announcement that Manapul was off the book and Johns appears to be in stall mode on the book while waiting for Kubert to get all of Flashpoint drawn.

Speaking of Flashpoint, I’ll give it a shot. I hope it’s fairly self-contained despite all of the spin-offs. Too much to ask for…?

The book I’m truly looking forward to this week in Superman. I though the last issue was a bit of a misstep, but other otherwise I’ve enjoyed Roberson’s take and am genuinely interested in seeing where it goes. I hope DC has the sense to leave him on the book after he wraps up the JMS story and we can see what Roberson has up his sleeve when he’s given a bit more creative freedom.

Having just picked up last week’s books today, I’m about to read Fear Itself #2. Depending on how that goes, I may give Journey Into Mystery a shot.

And I agree with John K(UK); Northlanders is definitely worth everyone’s money and time. I’ve never had an issue completely blow me away (although both parts of “The Girl In The Ice” were pretty close to doing so), but I’ve never been disappointed. Definitely a book that reads better in monthly format as opposed to collected novels.

  5. Had a great FCBD with my 6 and 3 year old girls, and am feeling the comics love again. The kind you get from laying on your tummy in the middle of the carpet reading a stack. So I am awfully disapointed to see this is my week of licensing and low-expectations. Whatever the opposite of synchronicity is, this it it.

ALL NEW BATMAN THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD #7
(Our favorite show, but the comic is for Dad. The slayer of decompressed storylines, and the legacy-bearer for Bob Haney. OUTRAGEOUS!)

    ASTONISHING X-MEN #37
(Fin Fang Foom is his name! Purple Underpants are his game!)

    BATGIRL #21
(a pop art bit of fun, but one which has seems, I dunno, a bit flat for the past few issues. Stellar MOMENTS, and the best dialogue going, but just missing…something)

    DOC SAVAGE #14
(On notice: great pulp story but criminally mis-matched art)

    LONE RANGER #25
    (the end of the story.)

    NORTHLANDERS #40
(Proving viking isn’t a genre. Always interesting, and never predicatble. I agree with Anthony, a great piece of serial fiction)

    TOTAL RECALL #1
(Get you ahss to Mahs! Low, low expectations for this, but I’d hapilly settle for fun. Bit worried it will try and be Serious Comics Art, though, which would be a shame)

WARLORD OF MARS DEJAH THORIS #3
(underneath the slopurbbering ient art, is a decent enough story. Not sure how long I can excuse the former..)

BACK ISSUE #48 (Dead heroes and bronze age awesome! Elektra! Aunt May! Earth Two Batman! Corey says DONT ASK, JUST READ IT!)

And I fully endorse John K(UK) on the Kubert picks. You simply can’t go wrong.

  6. AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #660
    BATGIRL #21
BATMAN ARKHAM CITY #1 (OF 5)
    BATMAN INCORPORATED #6
DC COMICS PRESENTS LEGION OF SUPER HEROES #1
DC COMICS PRESENTS THE FLASH #1
    FLASH #12 (FLASHPOINT)
    FLASHPOINT #1
    SUPERMAN #711

  7. At the risk of being put on some kind of Register I’d like to address Cory (Ottawa)’s comments about WARLORD OF MARS. Prurient seems a bit harsh, effendi? If anything it all seems a tad perfunctory.

And then I thought about why I thought that and wrote too many words about it for no real reason: I mean, don’t get me wrong, all the artists do fine work delineating the contours of those (incomparable) knockers. And the men are given (almost) the same degree of attention, which is good. But it’s just…there. It could be argued that there’s only a limited audience for vanilla T&A anymore now when there’s the Internet and Everyone Doing Everything To Everyone All The Time) (EDETEATT) just a click away. But if I’ve learned anything from reading about comics retailing (and I haven’t) it’s that when the competition threatens to render you obsolete it’s a good idea to diversify, so can T&A be used to perform more than its most basic function?

Yes, I’m saying to Dynamite, that when it comes to T&A don’t just stick it in try using a little bit of technique as, so I’m told, the results tend to be more satisfying. Oh, I know, if only I had an example of T&A actually being used to fulfil a narrative as well as a sensual purpose. Wait, what’s this…

My, is it hot in here or have I been reading the Dark Horse JOHN CARTER OF MARS: WARLORD OF MARS TPB? I’ve not finished it off yet but it’s pretty salty and heated stuff so far. I mean no one’s going at it like chimps in heat or anything but when Gil “Sugar Lips” Kane’s around Spring is always in the air for starters and then John Carter’s persistently (and sweatily) anticipating how when he gets back from his latest nonsensical romp (not a criticism) he’s going to be loving (the incomparable) Dejah Thoris as only a husband can love his wife (joylessley with the lights off?).

I haven’t read the Claremont stuff yet but I imagine someone will get mind-raped or something which, okay, is no one’s idea of a good time. Tony “Homina Homina” Dezuniga turns up later and all his ladies look like they are auditioning for the mesmeric Caroline Munro epic STARCRASH. And it’s not just (the incomparable) Dejah Thoris, no, old JC’s a bit of a stud too.

Basically the bits I’ve read are surprisingly mature in using the sexual elements; they are subtle enough for the kids to miss ‘em (I did back then) but overt enough for adults to notice and also have a useful purpose in enhancing the characterisations while also being a little bit naughty. Overall I rated this book POTENT.

I knew I should have stuck to banging on about NORTHLANDERS.
