  1. Back to the AvX grind. It was so nice having a week off from all this crap…

    Avengers vs X-Men #4:
The preview pages suck as much as they did for #3, but they’re not funny this time. The slow-motion train wreck continues…

    AVX VS #2:
And then there’s this. I’m an old Claremont nerd so this Colossus doesn’t even remotely seem like the same character. Emotional resonance of any of this: zero. But punching! And webs in the face!

    Daredevil #13:
This is an objectively good comic, but I’m just not interested in the subject matter. So I’ll probably drop it just to make room for some more scifi/cosmic/wacky stuff when it comes along. Sorry DD. It’s not you, it’s me.

    Justice League #9:
Jim Lee returns and I have high hopes that this arc will be a lot better than the first. I don’t know why I feel this way… And Shazam! I actually rather like this back-up: look forward to it more than the main feature.

    Nightwing #9:
Now this is an event I like. Gonna watch Dick Grayson beat the crap out of the re-animated corpse of his great-grandfather! Maybe they’ll share a tender moment. Only in comics!

  2. Chris – You had me thinking for a second that Geoff Johns was writing Nightwing.

  3. ADVENTURE TIME #4 – YES!! My absolute favorite comic coming out right now. So excited!

ATOMIC ROBO REAL SCIENCE ADV #2 – I don’t buy the single issues anymore, but I do buy the trades. I’m just pointing this out so you know I read the newest Tilting! ^_^

DANGER CLUB #2 – I really enjoyed the first issue. It’s like a Mark Millar story but fleshed out and not as crass.

DAREDEVIL #13 – Again? I’m starting to get tired of buying this book. It just comes out too damn often. I don’t want to purchase a bi-weekly book.

GLORY #26 – Woo hoo! Another awesome book! I love how this book passes the Bechdel Test so well!

HELL YEAH #3 – I’m still trying to figure out if I want to keep reading this or not. Every time I think it’s totally cliche, it throws a curve ball at me. I’m not sure if I like that or not, but I’m intrigued enough to keep buying.

MANHATTAN PROJECTS #3 – I’ve always greatly enjoyed Hickman’s creator owned work, plus I’m a total physics nerd, so I love this.

SAGA #3 – I feel like we need a new approach of trying to figure out anything bad to say about this book. I’m sure tcj.com can and will, but those guys are pretty far removed from reality.

THIEF OF THIEVES #4 – This book is enjoyable in that it’s totally mediocre and takes no thought to follow or enjoy. It’s the comic book equivalent of CSI.

  4. AMAZING SPIDER-MAN ENDS OF EARTH #1 – It’s the tie-in to a storyline that involves Spider-Man, Silver Sable and Black Widow fighting to stop the cure to global warming, and it stars Union Jack, Kangaroo, Big Hero Six, Titanium Man and Sabra all fighting to save the earth. Seems like a no-brainer to me.

CONAN THE BARBARIAN #4 – What? No Cloonan? Let’s just hope a stoopid boy can draw Conan just as well!

    DANCER #1 – I’ll give it a shot!

DANGER CLUB #2 – Whoo-hoo! The first issue of this caught me totally off guard, and it was a blast. Chris Hero got it – it’s like Millar, but where super-types being mean and snarky ties into the plot/theme, not ‘just because’.

DAREDEVIL #13 – Khoi! Pham! Drawing in the style of the artist they’d rather have, but can’t because they upped the amount of issues shipping! DD has really gone from what I want in a superhero book, to having all the usual baggage I dislike about them, in a really short amount of time – hopefully, this is the last issue of that malarkey.

GLORY #26 – It’s like Wonder Woman, but good. (Weird it had to come out at the same time as there is a good WW, but that’s comics for you).

    HARDCORE #1 – I’ll give it a shot.

HELL YEAH #3 – Chris Hero is right again. I’ve started each issue thinking ‘this isn’t for me’, but by the end, I want to read the next one.

HULK SMASH AVENGERS #3 (OF 5) – This hasn’t been as fun as I’d hoped (Lee Weeks covers always get me over excited) but it has been fun. Could do with more smashing.

INCREDIBLE HULK #7.1 – I don’t really understand how this book needs a jump-on point seven issues in, just before a new storyline, but I’ll give it a go – no Whilce will be an improvement, and Aaron is just going nuts on this one.

JUSTICE LEAGUE #9 – Please be good! I like the set-up/status quo the last two issues gave us for the JL, but they were static, clunky exposition-fests. Hopefully, it’ll pay off with this issue being awesome.

RESET #2 (OF 4) – It’s Bagge being Bagge, and that’s enough for me.

    SAGA #3 – Can’t wait!

SAUCER COUNTRY #3 – This is good, with chances of getting gooder as it goes along.

SHADOW #2 – Waaaaaay better than Ennis’ Jennifer Blood. Should be good times.

SUPERGIRL #9 – This is a maybe. Mahmud Anjum Asrar is the star of the show here, but his absence last month made me realise how lacking the plots/script are… so now I’m really hesitant about it. Will have to decide after a flick through.

    BACK ISSUE #56
DEADENDERS TP – Good things come to those who wait!

  5. Holy smokes, kids. I’ve got some spendin’ to do.

    ADVENTURE TIME #4
The effervescent praise of Chris Hero has won this an issue. I struggle with absurdity based children’s / stunted children’s programming (I occasionally count myself a member of the latter category…BROCK SAMPSON!) but I will give this a shot.

BPRD HELL ON EARTH DEVILS ENGINE #1 (OF 3)
Maybe it’s because I’m a late convert but I’m feeling none of the over extension of the line that some long time fans have been expressing. What I’ve read so far has been accessible and open so while some people may be clamoring for more or less of X or Y I’m just soaking it up when the mood strikes.

    CONAN THE BARBARIAN #4
I really enjoy how Wood is giving in to the material. A lot of the previous issues have been internal and caption heavy. Lyrical in places. That’s one of the key components of Howard’s writing, maybe the most obvious, the juxtaposition of raw beauty and crushing violence. Any good take on Conan is going to have that but with a spin. The seafaring and Belit are looking good to be “that spin.”

    DANGER CLUB #2
Digital salesmanship BEARS FRUIT! Three copies of Danger Club #2 sold! I think last (1st) issue was a very good introduction to the world. Also, Walker has a good/great handle on kids and that panel of the audience sidekicks sitting in the bleachers was great. It REALLY looked like a shot of kids sitting in a classroom and was utterly heartbreaking. How easily influenced kids can be and how painful betrayals of trust are at that age should make for some powerful stuff. Again, this is the team that made this ( http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_16vaepAqX-c/SwMQaEC2kTI/AAAAAAAAA1Q/rq2bT2B5zks/s1600/space+brains.JPG ) I have no worries.

    GLORY #26 (Spoiler!)
I was in the minority finding the last issue wanting. I felt it rushed to a major reveal – spent too long dwelling in a rote “you must kill me my only and oldest frenemy!” fantasy that was not particularly dream like – and then returned us to a plot that is my least favorite trope. That being the “misunderstanding drives a wedge” between friends. Hoping it gets back to a better spot for me but I’m along regardless.

    JUSTICE LEAGUE #9
I’ll check back in after hearing from Wait, What!? that things have gotten slightly more offbeat. The first issues just felt so exceedingly bland and by the numbers that the splash page bonanza of 4 (or was it 5) was just too much.

    SAGA #3
Weird, wandering spirit disembodied children with vague motivations? Could I be any more in?

    SAUCER COUNTRY #3
Graeme said something along the lines of this maybe being a personal story that Cornell just had to write and needed to get down on paper. While I’m not sure that it’s necessarily a passion piece I know that writers are more like a river than a faucet and that things will just “come out.” I’ve been reading it as it’s published but I may buy and sit on a few issues to try to artificially tweak the pace.

    SHADE #8 (OF 12)
This series is just going peak after peak for me. Enjoyable, well drawn, well written, questioning and yes, emotional.

    SHADOW #2
Great first issue and high hopes here for the extended cast especially Margo. Ennis has tone DOWN at issue 1. That’s a great sign.

    WONDER WOMAN #9
Chiang me and hurry up about it.

Also, currently about a 1/3 of the way through Duncan The Wonder Dog. That’s a passion piece, bros and er…bro-ettes.

When you’ve got two tiny….TINY panels (I’m talking like 1/64 of the page) of black and slightly less black that show the difference and convey the motion of the rising and falling sea at night then that is cartooning. Add in that those panels simultaneously give you the strangest feeling of scale and story…

    That’s urgent.

It may not be for everyone but that book is freaking urgent.

  6. Back from my travels, albeit with a suitcase full of back issues (only one more issue of ROM to go!!). Lots of good floppies coming, although I am sadly behind on my current reading.

CONAN THE BARBARIAN #4 – Woods has been great. Sad to see no Cloonan.

DANGER CLUB #2 – I’ll admit, this sounded a bit “Brat Pack by way of Irredeemable” to me, but the Other Scottish Comic Blog tipped me off that it was surprisingly good. So while I was off in the big city I picked up #1. Good stuff indeed.

DAREDEVIL #13 – I for one am going to keep reading for a while, as this book has earned some trust. So for now its Keep Calm and Carry On.

GLORY #26 – I finished reading #25 and just sat there awed. Sorry it didn’t work for you J_Smitty, but it just left me remembering why I love comics. Here’s hoping that carries through for us both this month.

GREEN LANTERN CORPS #9 – Johns has chased me away from GL core book (what with the prison rape, oedipul issues and Hal recharging his ring on a picture of a Green Lantern, and then being surprised it fizzles out). Conversely, GLC seems to have most of the things I want in a GL book (except Sinestro), so I’m happy to park my three bucks here.

HELLBLAZER #291 – Great stuff month after month.

JOHN CARTER GODS OF MARS #3 – a great little book, even if the clamoring for a movie sequel has not quite reached its crescendo yet. I’m hopeful, however.

MANHATTAN PROJECTS #3 – finally got my #1, so time to read all three and get caught up. That black ink Image is using seems to be resulting in huge numbers of books being declared ‘damaged in shipping’, so please fix it, or change the design.

SAGA #3 – makes me happy just knowing it exists. There were four or five absolutely perfect beats in issue #2. This has clearly been the book of 2012 for me. “Not an exageration, I REALLY SAW THAT!”

SAUCER COUNTRY #3 – yeah, Graeme is just wrong. This is a very good book.

SHADOW #2 – about as well done as a SHADOW comic can be. And this issue has all that *and* Pan Am Clipper flying boats? I am in two-gun pulp heaven.

SUPERGIRL #9 – with props to Ben Lipman, I also agree that Asrar’s art has been the star. I am getting enough value out of this I will be sticking around for a while yet, however.

THIEF OF THIEVES #4 – we got this last week out East, but you Westies should buy it, despite probably being the weakest issue so far.

WINTER SOLDIER #5 – golly Mister! This is a book that should not exist, featuring a character I loathe, but boy-howdy has it been fun and frentic. To date Guice has been drawing the hell out of it. If they still made Super Villain Team Up, this is what it would be. DOOM CARES NOT!

    And in OTHER STUFF:

BACK ISSUE #56 – the topical “Avengers” issue. Back Issue is traditionally great, even if this particular issue seems a bit “post bronze” focused for my taste. At least its not about the headbands and “Members Only jacket” era of the Avengers. That said Marvel gets my personal thanks and thirty of my hard-earned bucks, for the forthcoming HC reprint of the “Bride of Ultron” storyline.

SECRET SOCIETY OF SUPER VILLAINS HC VOL 02 – My shipping list also shows I’m getting this, which is awesome sauce. SSSV was such a 70s bronze wonder. Who the heck is Captain Comet? dunno! Keep reading? Mantis? looks neat, keep reading! Manhaunter is cool! Keep reading. Such innocent times. I have great memories about this book, although its spotty availability on the spinner rack kept me from ever finishing reading it. Now is my time.

I may also try JUSTICE LEAGUE #9, as like those above, I’m digging SHAZAM and hoping for some actual new direction for the lead story too. JL hasn’t been something I read, but I try to keep an open mind.

Also may give SECRET HISTORY OF DB COOPER #3 a go. Bought and read the first two, and they piqued my interest, I’m just not sure how much… I was not expecting Buckaroo Banzai meets Steve Ditko’s Dr. Strange. There is an obvious high level of craft and passion here, even if it isn’t quite the book I wanted it to be.
