Arriving 5/19/2010

Older business first: I quite liked Tom Spurgeon’s thought piece on Digital. If I didn’t have mildly more information than he, I’d probably agree with it 100%, but I’m fairly hopeful, at this instant in time (which can always change), that I’m closer than he is. We’ll see, I’m sure. Go read it, anyway.

Here’s what’s shipping this week (I’ll start reviews again tomorrow):

  1. Just have two this week:

    Batman: Streets of Gotham 12
(is this title necessary? No. Do I enjoy it? Yes. Plus I’m looking forward to Dini’s follow-up to “Heart of Hush”)

    Dark Tower: The Gunslinger 1
(Really excited to see a more mature Roland. That was my only problem with the other series, kept waiting for Roland to be a bad-ass and it didn’t happen to the end – same problem as the Star Wars prequels….)

Thats it – I’m afraid to see how many titles will be available next week……

  2. Will one of Len Wein’s DC Universe Legacies recount him telling Alan Moore it was OK to “cripple the bitch” in KILLING JOKE?

  3. BRIGHTEST DAY #2

BATMAN STREETS OF GOTHAM HC VOL 01 HUSH MONEY
GARTH ENNIS BATTLEFIELDS TP VOL 04 HAPPY VALLEY
SCALPED TP VOL 06 THE GNAWING
JUSTICE SOCIETY OF AMERICA BAD SEED TP (maybe)

“Will one of Len Wein’s DC Universe Legacies recount him telling Alan Moore it was OK to “cripple the bitch” in KILLING JOKE?”

Why is everyone so upset about a guy saying that about a fictional character?

  4. Week after week I’m surprised by the absences in your list. This time, you don’t have one single customer interested in the Mary Perkins On Stage or Juliet Jones strip reprints. And yours is a prominent store in a major American city. Makes you think how lucky we are that things like that get published at all.

  5. Ben: I think a comment like what Len allegedly made kind of goes beyond the context it was used in. If he had said “cripple the character” then I can see your point, but by using the word “b*tch” (sorry I’m at work) it implies a certain attitude about women in general. Barbara Gordon has never been written as anything but friendly and intelligent, so why would Len feel comfortable referring to her as he (allegedly) did?

    INVINCIBLE IRON MAN
My first foray into the monthly comic. I’ve been enjoying the tpbs and the way the stories are broken out, I think Fraction’s structuring works in monthly installments. I love Larocca, but my one quibble is his use of the same 3-4 Sawyer-from-Lost photo references for Stark. Didn’t Larcocca used o draw “normally” and not so heavy with the photos?

    DEATHLOK
Proud to be one of 2,000 people buying this book. This is another title that worked surprisingly well as a monthly. Maybe Marvel can kill interest in this altogether by releasing the collection in hardcover first. (I see now that they’re releasing the paperback first! Nice change of strategy).

  6. I tell ya what – there’s nothing like taking a 25 year old quote out of context and lambasting the speaker for it!

  7. R.e. The Len Wein Thing: I’m thinking that if there isn’t actually a statute of limitations for unfortunate utterances, maybe after a quarter of a century it’s time for the healing to begin.

    Here’s what I’m buying anyway:

    AMERICAN VAMPIRE #3
(This is really, really good in both words and art!)
BATMAN THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD #17
    (for Jnr)
    CREEPY COMICS #3
(Can’t afford the reprints so this’ll do me.)
    DC UNIVERSE LEGACIES #1
(I had a dream last night. Len Wein was dancing. He was beautiful. He was dancing. Actually, I’m buying it for Kubert Snr.)
    GARTH ENNIS BATTLEFIELDS #6
    (Geordie Combat Action!)
    HELLBLAZER #267
(Shade The Changing Man! Awesome rising! You have been warned!)
    JOE THE BARBARIAN #5
    (‘snice this is.)
    SPIRIT #2
(What If The Batman Was Skint? Okay.)
    TINY TITANS #28
    (Aw, yeah!)

Good stuff, but bestest of all is Kubert. Or Shade. Hard Choice.

    Comics! Aw, yeaaaaaaaahh!

  8. BRIGHTEST DAY #2
    So far it’s been great!

    LEGION OF SUPER HEROES #1
What? Am I alone in wanting to see what Levitz has in store for his return?

  9. Picked up Zatanna 1 as well (see, if it had come out next week I would’ve never picked it up amongst the trillion books that are sure to arrive). Fun book, great replacement for Power Girl once it switches creative teams. I’d recommend it to anyone looking for a fun, simple book with some nice art and a new (relatively) protagonist.
