Haven’t actually checked what is in the Slaine book though, so would have to see

  2. I’ll be ordering the following nasty scamps:

    AMERICAN VAMPIRE #15
(Fiends Of The Eastern Front was good wasn’t it? How’s this? I’m a bit behind.)
    ASTONISHING SPIDER-MAN WOLVERINE #6
(I totally forget I’m buying this every time. That’s the magic of senility, right there! Every day’s full of surprises!)
    CAPTAIN AMERICA #618
    (Chris Samnee?)
DC COMICS PRESENTS GREEN LANTERN WILLWORLD #1
(The late Seth Fisher’s incredible art at a bargain price! If you only buy one Green Lantern comic buy the one you want, obviously, but buy this as well. Your eyes’ll love you for it!)
    IRON MAN 2.0 #5
(Can War Machine triumph over his greatest fear – Negative Equity!! With a big hammer!!)
    KIRBY GENESIS #0
(In which Pa Kirby rubs Ma Kirby’s belly, wishes in her ear and 18 months later The King of Comics steps out from behind a bush! “C’mon, crazy lady!!!” Kirby-Time! Hoo-HAAA!)
    MIGHTY THOR #2
(Forsooth, verily pre-ordering canst sucketh unto the root!)
    STRANGE ADVENTURES #1
    (Azzarello & Risso’s Spaceman!)
    WOLVERINE #9
(Man, Wolverine: Weapon-X was good, wasn’t it?)
    XOMBI #3
(The comic so good the backlash has already begun!)

Hey, I should get some actual comics this week.

COMICS! I like reading ‘em I do! Do YOU?

  3. JohnK(UK) the only way that post would have been better is if you had double posted the Spider-Man Wolverine pick.

    That’s ADVANCED senility!

Xombi backlash gives me a good chuckle. Thanks for the picks you guys.

  4. John,

If you like new stuff like Fiends of the Eastern Front, you could check out this cool series Tomb of Dracula that has been going for a few months.

  5. @J_Smitty: Oh, it could have been far better particularly if it was as funny as your joke. That’s ADVANCED comedy!

@Blue Tyson: I’m not reading Tomb of Dracula because I refuse to encourage Marvel after they raised their prices to 7 whole pence! Also Gene “The Dean” Colan is clearly drawing Vlad as Jack Palance in the vain hope that he’ll play Dracula in the inevitable movie. Palance as Dracula; dream on Colan! And lay off the photo referencing, Colan! And, oh dear, Wolfman’s dreary attempt to infuse “realism” into this stuff pretty much makes it certain the title won’t see 12 issues! Or I’ll eat a bug! Comics’ll be lucky to see the ’80s if these trends persist, I tellya!

Ooops, it suddenly strikes me that maybe Blue Tyson was not in fact ripping the proverbial out of my age. Maybe there was a new Fiends of The Eastern Front (the one I read was in 1980)? Maybe there is a Tomb of Dracula comic? Is there? Who do dat? Is good, ja?

    But J_Smitty! BlueTyson!

    (Quid pro quo, Clarice!)

    What looks good to YOU!?!

  6. Actually, mea culpa, you already said what looked good to YOU, Blue Tyson!

Which is why I was on the Internet in the first place: looking up Slaine The Horned God thanks to your mention. Looks like it’s the MIlls and Bisley stuff which is almost as awesome as the Mills and McMahon stuff. Okay, so this stuff has been collected many times…but I did not think it too many! Ho! Nice stuff so it is.

  7. ACTION COMICS #901 (DOOMSDAY)
Cornell…if you can pull this together I will buy pretty much whatever you put out. If not, well, I still like you but I think it’ll be a just friends kind of thing.

    CAPTAIN AMERICA #618
Can Chris Samnee make me care about Captain America? We will see! Oh, and what in the hell is up with the Rogue variant cover? Who is Marvel catering to with this?

    FF #4
Well, the son of a bitch has gotten almost $12 out of me. Better see where this first arc winds up…glacially paced or not. Oh, and Valeria sucks.

    KIRBY GENESIS #0
JohnK(UK) If I had been drinking milk sir…

    SECRET WARRIORS #27
Funny story. I bought the first, I dunno ten issues of Secret Warriors and the big reveal was that oh no! Fury has been working for the bad guys all along. So I heard some good hype and was feeling generous towards Hickman so I picked up #26 HA! F%$KER~! Joke’s on you! You’ve been working for FURY! That sixteen issue intermission is yours for the cost of a car payment!

SPIDER-GIRL #7 Swings on a rope any size…catches thieves with pluck and gumption…look out there goes Spider-Girl

    STRANGE ADVENTURES #1
    (On spec)

UNCANNY X-MEN #537 Gillen as great as Journey Into Mystery is an enjoyable little gnosh every month thus far I am nearing the middle of my middle. I have seen Ord at his most dangerous and menacing. Let’s go somewhere new, yes? Or at least somewhere more distinctly yours. This feels like a bridge and I’m okay with moving in different directions at a reasonable pace but…feeling a lil wobbly on this one.

    XOMBI #3
Why? How? Who? Frankly my dear I don’t give a damn. This series is not really into the whole hand holding thing despite being very accessible and I’m fine with that. Get me to a place where I can enjoy the book and things develop. That’s fine. Tragic if this is the only piece that even remotely ties to the McDuffie legacy.

  8. ACTION COMICS #901 (DOOMSDAY)
(I see this less as Superman Vs Doomsday, and more Paul Cornell Vs Doomsday. Will Cornell be able to make him interesting, or will Doomsday topple another writer into mediocrity?)
    AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #662
    BUTCHER BAKER RIGHTEOUS MAKER #3
    DETECTIVE COMICS #877
    KIRBY GENESIS #0
(Is this an actual story or just a preview issue type thing?)
POWER MAN AND IRON FIST #5 (OF 5)
    RUSE #3 (OF 4)
    SKULLKICKERS #7
    SUPER DINOSAUR #2
    VENOM #3
    XOMBI #3

JUSTICE LEAGUE INTERNATIONAL TP VOL 06

“DC COMICS PRESENTS GREEN LANTERN WILLWORLD #1
(The late Seth Fisher’s incredible art at a bargain price! If you only buy one Green Lantern comic buy the one you want, obviously, but buy this as well. Your eyes’ll love you for it!)”

    Hells yeah!
‘DC Comics Presents’ has been putting out some good stuff (among a few wtf choices), but this has to be the best one so far.
I brought the hardcover earlier this year, and anyone who doesn’t already have a copy of the OGN should check this out.

    J_Smitty:
    “FF #4
Well, the son of a bitch has gotten almost $12 out of me. Better see where this first arc winds up…glacially paced or not. Oh, and Valeria sucks.”

I’m out, and it feels good.
Dan Slott and Fred Van Lente have done a much better take on Future Foundation in ASM that it seems like Hickman would be capable of.
It’s been fun, funny, exciting, and packed full of far out ideas – none of which Hickman has felt the need to go with in his book.

  9. There are Fiends of the Eastern Front novels, amazingly enough, and pretty good, too, speaking of newish. They did reprint it in a trade a few years ago.

And some new Tomb of Dracula titled thing soon – but good, I sincerely doubt it.

Strange Adventures 1 I should add – any SF looking anthology is always worth a look to me, too.

  10. I hate chiming in late, after John K and J_Smitty have slung all the zingers that can be zung. But here goes, True Believers:

AMERICAN VAMPIRE #15 (a nice package of art, pace, mood and story, in a day and age when I usually only get one of those things per book)

DETECTIVE COMICS #877 (that last issue was pretty much all I want in a Tec. Great stuff)

DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS #7 (proof that good storytelling is its own reward)

KING CONAN SCARLET CITADEL #4 (yes more genre, but genre is hard. It’s like poetry: it has rules which a violent group of purists vocally defend and which bind your hands, and there is the risk that by following the rules, you deaden the thing into lifeless garbage. Good Conan is hard. This is good Conan)

PLANET OF THE APES #2 (I was surprised at issue 1. That’s enough to get my sheckels for issue 2)

STRANGE ADVENTURES #1 (okay, DC: Show me what you gots)

XOMBI #3 (the comic the Internet loves to hate that it loves except for some haters! John K(UK)’s buying it, WHY AREN’T YOU!?

  11. Hey now, Corey (Ottawa), now the Canadian contingent showed up we can get this party started! There’s nibbles and dip left!

I hear what you say about Genre, Corey (Ottawa)! And I like what I hear! Raise your hands into the air, throw back your everloving head and testify, bubba! TESTIFY! Let them hear The Word all the way down in KANSAS!

Actually I’m shamefaced to say I’m rubbish on poetry but I do like Laughing Larkin and Happy Hughes. Shakespeare? Does he count? He had his moments, I guess. Dodgy on history, i hear. And as anyone who has read MICRONAUTS will vouch – Bill “The Bard” Mantlo! (Oh yes, he did!). I should read more poetry. Okay, any poetry. I’m feeling bad about my cultural laziness now. I’m sure some Kirby OMAC will sort that out! What? It’s poetry too! Damn straight!

I just hope comics don’t end up emulating poetry on the sales level. Eeeew!

  12. Anyone who has a ready compliment for Mantlo’s MICRONAUTS at hand is a friend o’ mine.

    And thanks for the dip!
