Hey! Do you remember I used to have a feature called “Asshat of the Week”, for Fucking Stupid Publishing Decisions?

I *could* grant it to Marvel comics for publishing TWO issues of “Amazing Spider-Man” (and a spin-off mini) this week. Yeah, that’s pretty fucking dumb.

I *could* also give it to DC for publishing two installments of the “weekly” 5 issue semi-mini-series “Joker’s Asylum” this week. Yeah, that’s also pretty fucking dumb.

But I think I *actually* have to give it to Moonstone for publishing THREE different “Phantom” comics in a single week! I mean, at least people *like* Batman and Spider-Man. Almost no one (in America) likes The Phantom any more, and no one is going to change their mind at all when you dump that number of comics on to the rack in a single week.

What the fuck is wrong with these people, anyway? Do they WANT their comics to not sell?

What looks good you YOU, anyway?

  1. I would guess that Moonstone is trying to churn out as much Phantom material as they can before they lose the license to Dynamite.

    Mike

  2. I’m sure Moonstone is trying to get all their remaining Phantom stuff out on the shelves before the the license moves over to Dynamite Entertainment. There must be a date that they can no longer release any new content, and they have to get everything out before that day hits. Didn’t this kind of thing happen when G.I. Joe was at DDP and they lost the license to IDW?

  3. There’s also a new PHANTOM movie premiering on the-channel-formerly-known-as-the-SciFi-Channel next week so perhaps the license is moving across media (or, far less than likely, Moonstone are releasing all them PHANTOM books to capitalize on the scant exposure the movie will give the property).

  4. Are you “permitted” to rack them as you like? In other words could you rack them yourself on a staggered schedule, or is that in violation of something?

THOR Vol 3 TPB. Too bad JMS had to go.

  5. Amazing Spider-man 633

    Amazing Spider-man 634

    Dark Tower Gunslinger 2

As an Amazing Spider-man customer I don’t really mind buying 2 issues this week. I’d noticed that the last issue for the Lizard story was running late, kinda glad they didn’t hold up the Kraven story because of it. I wasn’t going to buy the mini anyway – its $3.99 an issue. Still don’t understand why the minis are at that price point – minis are about the easiest thing to NOT buy.

Oh, and I dropped Red Sonja completely because they expanded the line to 3 titles and bumped them all up to $3.99 an issue. Way to pull a “Marvel” Dynamite! Kill that niche-market!!! Not interested in overpriced oversaturated metal bikini comics. Not. Interested. Oh, and an ongoing Red Sonja series of REPRINTED comics at $3.99 an issue is fucking insane.

  6. Amazing Spider-man 633
    Amazing Spider-man 634
    Amazing Spider-man: Black Cat 1
Arkham Asylum: Mad Hatter (Sienkiewicz was casted great for this tie-in)
    Arkham Asylum: Harley Quinn
Hellblazer 268 (Milligan doing a Shade/Hellblazer team-up is even better than Sienkiewicz on the Mad Hatter)
    Spirit 3
    Web of Spider-man 9

Yea, I’m buying the non-asshats of the week. You forgot to mention the fourth spidey title getting shipped this week! At least we get two pulido/rodriguez comics this week with the black cat and web of Spider-man. That title is quickly becoming a haven for some good working foreign cartoonists these days, with marcos martin waiting in the wings.

And some Quinones with the Mad Hatter special, it’s really a top notch week for some good cartooning.

  7. Actually, I like the Phantom, but being in New Zealand much prefer to read the Australian published Phantom comics (http://phantomcomicstrips.blogspot.com/). I read the Comic Shop News article about the upcoming Dynamite series, it doesn’t sound like anything I’d be interested in, and frankly I hated the art shown too. So, one Phantom fan, not buying either Moonstone’s or Dynamite’s books.

  8. I’m old enough to remember when I could find and buy consecutive issues of a comic book on a spinner rack. This was before the direct market. Consecutive issues of “the Avengers” (yes, without adjectives)! What luck! Nowadays, not so much.

  9. Apparently Marvel doesn’t want to sell Hulk comics in September. Not only are the solicits all classified (even tho some have already been revealed in interviews), but they were only shown in an entry on Marvels own site and not with all the other solicits that were released earlier today.

  10. How about some DARKWING DUCK #1? A former CE pull list subscriber done good after all! Yes, I’m shilling but this is a book everyone involved in worked hard on to make sure it’s worth readers’ time and money!

  11. Amazing Spider-Man (#633)
    Amazing Spider-Man (#634)
    Boys (#43)
    Brightest Day (#4)
    Lone Ranger (#22)

I’m enjoying the (very) slow burn on the Lone Ranger, although the massive delays in a supposed monthly is annoying.

I don’t mind AMS shipping twice in one week. I don’t mind the minis shipping at a $3.99 (or $6.50 Australian) price point, as it makes the decision to skip them incredibly easy.

I’m actually enjoying both the DC fortnightlies at present, and far more than either Countdown or Trinity.

And The Boys is always interesting, and usually in a positive way.

  12. It’s worth mentioning that Birds of Prey #2 came out as well, at least in Philadelphia.

  13. >>>It’s worth mentioning that Birds of Prey #2 came out as well, at least in Philadelphia.< << Yes, but it DID NOT ship on the West Coast at all, and this is a shipping list of things that arriving to my store, on the West Coast :) -B
