  1. Hey! Always read what the regulars have to say, thought I would join in this week!

ALL NEW GUARDIANS OF GALAXY #4
Story is fine, if unimpressive, but I am really digging the art. I’m still on for now but it needs to get moving. OKAY!

    BLACK HAMMER #10
With Lemire totally bailing on Marvel and I refuse to read Valiant due to their beetleheaded (yes, that’s a word)chasing of speculators, this hits that spot for the mans work. Bonus! It’s a fine read. VERY GOOD!

CAPTAIN AMERICA STEVE ROGERS #18 SE
    DOCTOR STRANGE #22 SE
SECRET EMPIRE BRAVE NEW WORLD #2 (OF 5) SE
    SECRET EMPIRE UNDERGROUND #1 SE
I don’t know why I insist on hurting myself, but I do. EH!

    DAREDEVIL #22
Half brilliant, half beetleheaded (Still a word, I promise!),this book wears me out. It’s just good enough not to give up on. Good! (I guess)

    ICEMAN #2
    Bought #1, wasn’t impressed…at all. Eh!

    LUKE CAGE #2
David Walker is a pretty good writer when he doesn’t get in his own way being preachy. So far, I’m really enjoying this but we’ll see. Very Good!

    MAN-THING #5 (OF 5)
My surprise of the year! I thought I would hate this but it’s witty and pretty damn funny. Somehow it manages to stay true to the character despite the overly silly tone. And the backup horror shorts by Stein are a great throwback to EC/Warren. I will truly miss this book. EXCELLENT!

    MONSTERS UNLEASHED #3
I love Kaiju, I hate inhumans being shoved down my throat. So far I’m hanging in there but I’m not sure for how long. OKAY!

    NICK FURY #3
Sure, it’s experimental but that does not not make it good. I miss Nick Sr. Robinson isn’t holding up his end against the cool art. I think I’m done with this. Eh!

    PETER PARKER SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN #1
Liked the FCBD story and the pages Bleeding Cool leaked looked pretty good so I’m down! NO RATING YET!

    ROYALS #4
Despite being sick of the Inhumans this is actually a damn good read. Maximus is a great villain and he’s on fire in this. Plus Marvel Boy always causes fun problems. Very Good!

    UNCLE SCROOGE #27
Bringing over Italian and other stories from around the world to give us new to the US material is good by me! Really enjoying this! Alas, the last issue of Mickey Mouse (#21) hits this week so it’s not all good.It looks like Hibbs didn’t even order it so I guess that’s why it’s getting canceled. Can’t sell something to folks that are not interested. Shame as all of IDW’s Disney titles are pretty great.

  2. Sorry, I forgot the Uncle Scrooge #27 rating is EXCELLENT!

  3. Black Hammer
    Mighty Thor
    Royal City

  4. Fairly heavy week for me. Also, welcome to Dennis!

ALL STAR BATMAN #11–Definitely enjoying the new Alfred-centric story arc. VERY GOOD

BATMAN #25–Added this to the pull list, at least for the duration of the Joker-Riddler thing, which looks fun. Issue #23 was VERY GOOD. My shop sold out of #24, so don’t know about that one. Also, hey, I think this is the first time since like, 1990 (really!), that I have two Batman titles on my pull list at once!

BLACK MONDAY MURDERS #6–I can’t imagine this title is for many people. Slow-moving, intellectual and abstracted, emotionally cold. Most people don’t consider those good things. This is for those of us who appreciate black coffee, black licorice, black comedies directed by Danny DeVito. Basically, things that are black. For a certain narrow definition of the word, this verges on EXCELLENCE.

BRITANNIA WE WHO #3 (OF 4)–Finally tracked down the first two issues at a different store than my usual (but they were also sold out of Batman #24), and haven’t gotten to them on my stack.

DOCTOR STRANGE #22 SE–Is this coming out weekly now or something? I feel like there’s a new issue of it every time I pick up my comics. Haven’t gotten to issue #21 on my stack yet, so can’t say if the new creative team is upholding the VERY GOOD standard of Aaron & Bachalo.

MAN-THING #5 (OF 5)–Pretty much agree with Dennis here, silly but still true to the character and his story, let’s call it GOOD but I’ve really been digging the VERY GOOD back ups.

PETER PARKER SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN #1–Looks promising. What I’m looking for here is a Spider-Man title that’s allowed to breathe a little more than the well-executed but non-stop-action main title. More character work. How’s Peter Parker’s love life? Etc.

SILVER SURFER #12–Is this the final issue? Issue #11 felt elegiac. I’m afraid this is the last issue. A most EXCELLENT run by Slott and Allred. The best run of the Silver Surfer, ever.

THE CHAIR #1 (OF 4)–Not picking this up (based on a movie starring Roddy Piper? for realz?), but I do want to go on record of liking the name “The Chair.” Sort of reminds me of George Constanza’s ideas for baby names–Seven and Soda. My future comic about “The Table” will literally be panel after panel of a table in a kitchen.

  5. Welcome Dennis, as well! This thread can always use a lot of different voices.

I echo Thelonious_Nick’s feelings about the Slott-Allred SILVER SURFER. It’s never been less than fun and sometimes it’s more than that. For one thing, I will never look at a Subway Sandwich outlet the same way again thanks to this series. Definitely worth a toast if it’s departing.

Of the rest of the titles:

THE WILD STORM has been Warren Ellis getting his futuristic mad science mojo on, which is why I love it.

The first issue of David F. Walker’s LUKE CAGE had both laughs and grimness, and I’m still a little freaked at Luke finding his ace in the hole doesn’t matter. So I’m back.

BATWOMAN gets a nod thanks to the character simpatico creative team of Marguerite Bennett and Steve Epting.

VICTOR LAVALLE DESTROYER impressed me with its update of the Frankenstein monster story, so I’m back for another go-round.

THE OLD GUARD wraps up the first storyline for this strong series from Greg Rucka and Leandro Fernandez about immortal mercenaries.

And getting a flip-through because it’s Pride Month is SHIRTLESS BEAR-FIGHTER.
