  1. Wow, great week. New LOEG, the issue of Prophet that Brandon Graham drew, Fatima The Blood Spinners, really excited to try to look at the Mazzucchelli Artist’s Edition of Born Again.

  2. SPIDER-MEN
    BATMAN INC.

BEFORE WATCHMEN: NITE OWL #1 (of 4). Yikes. I’m in the “no” camp.

  3. Aquaman #10:
Blah blah monthly decompression whining blah blah… Actually, I think Hibbs hit the nail on the head about this book: it’s less than the sum of its parts. But the parts are pretty decent, so I keep buying.

    Hypernaturals #1:
I missed the Abnett/Lanning cosmic stuff at Marvel, but it sounds like the kind of thing I would like. So I buy this to see. The FCBD preview was interesting enough, though not mind-blowing. I wonder if sci-fi/superhero (a la Green Lantern, Dreadstar, Strikeforce Morituri, etc) should be its own identified sub-genre? Anyone wanna write a thesis?

    Justice League #10:
The first issue of this second arc was pretty good. There was some actual graphic sequential story-telling from Jim Lee! Along with, of course, the usual pin-ups (can he ever draw a fight with some geography and logic to it? Or does it have to be all just posing?). The Shazam back-up’s conceit that the main character is a jerk makes it interesting enough, but it better do something magical soon before it wears out its welcome… it’s treading dangerously close to Aquaman territory of ‘it’s good but not enough of it’.

    Prophet #26:
This series maintains its quality even though I thought the too-sketchy art last ish was on the borderline of not-up-to-snuff. I wonder if this series turns into ‘sci-fi/superhero’ (my new made-up genre!) with the introduction of “The” Prophet? If he becomes THE focus I think I’ll be a bit disappointed at the loss of little stories about the explorations of the various random Prophets. I was kind of looking forward to a couple of years of that before there had to be some Big Story…

And last week was my all-Marvel week – it was less disappointing than I expected. The art and story of AvX took a quantum leap for the better. Waid continues to keep me coming back for more with a clever issue of Daredevil and another last page reveal that makes you desperate to read the next ish. Even “Inconsequential Fluff Starring Spider-Man” (Avenging) was better than I’d expected (and nicely self-contained for this buyer of no other SM books). Decent job, Marvel.

  4. COURTNEY CRUMRIN ONGOING #3 – If I can find it (unlikely, even in Manhattan!), I’ll buy it.

DOROTHY AND WIZARD IN OZ #8 (OF 8) – I can’t wait for the collected edition! I LOVE the art in these books and Shanowar is an under-appreciated genius!

HELL YEAH #4 – I’m on board. Weird book, but in a good way. Like, the plot is nothing more than twists and the character development is…stunted, but something about it works.

MANHATTAN PROJECTS #4 – I’m *really* enjoying this book. Hickman’s at his best when he’s just tossing crazy stuff out there kinda sorta based in real history.

MIND THE GAP #2 – This book is coming out now? I can never figure out that wacky Image publishing schedule.

PROPHET #26 – I cannot express my love for this book enough!

SUPREME #65 – I’m definitely getting kicked out of the cool kids club now. I don’t even think I like it, I’m just super curious to see how bad it can get.

  5. I don’t *want* the new LOEG volume; I NEED it!

  6. ALL STAR WESTERN #10 – A comic I like not quite enough to buy regularly, but you throw me a Batlash backup with Jose Luis Garcia Lopez art & I’m sold!

AMERICAN VAMPIRE #28 – Fascinated by the communist witch hunt/Hollywood blacklist era as I am, I’ll give this book another try

BATMAN INCORPORATED #2 – The 1st issue sucked me in with fun despite not being a fan of most of Morrison’s Batman run

BPRD HELL ON EARTH EXORCISM #1 (OF 2) – This is the week of comics I see the appeal of but don’t normally buy; here the draw is Cameron Stewart

NEW DEADWARDIANS #4 (OF 8) – Really digging this, along with, apparently, 14 other people

PROPHET #26 – Like Chris Brown, I was a little put off by the art last issue, and after loving #24 I didn’t think #25 followed up on the story very well until the ending (which rocked) but then there’s Brandon Graham on art

LOEG III CENTURY #3 2009 – ‘Nuff said, effendi!

  7. LAST WEEK!

GLORY #27 – Consequence, plot advanced, twist muscle flexing weirdness in the art department. Is this hulking out that Glory does pretty standard issue for the character or is it a new twist of the creative team?

SAGA #4 – Look, this is just it for me right now. Giving the sleaze guy on Sextillion the “You Mad, Bro?” face was quite inspired. At this point I care about every character that we’re supposed to and even some that we’re not. “I wonder how Prince Robot’s E.D. is going?”

SHADOW #3 – Campbell started to get a little loose late issue. But the characters got some maneuvering in and Cranston got duped a little bit, which is nice. Makes his opponents more formidable, ya know.

WONDER WOMAN #10 – No Chiang, Two Puns, and a Goddamn Elvis Costello lyric to close the issue.

ART OF HOWARD CHAYKIN HC – Not available for review

    THIS WEEK!

BATMAN INCORPORATED #2 Is Robin Dead as part of a soft new 52 boot almost a year after the fact? Would kinda make the whole Talia thing…moot…eh, don’t think about too much. Let’s ride!

    JUSTICE LEAGUE #10
Edging towards becoming an inertia buy and I’m not really down with that any more so we’ll see what this does in my hand.

PROPHET #26 I heartily endorse this comic. Thinking clearly and methodically about the rest of what this comic embodies and encompasses is a little much for me this morning.

    SPACEMAN #7 (OF 9)
Oh, hey, thing I forgot existed. How you been?

DAVID MAZZUCCHELLI DAREDEVIL BORN AGAIN ARTIST ED HC NGGGGHN!

  8. New LOEG this week??? SQUE!!! Sooo happy!!

  9. Chris Hero: MIND THE GAP #2 came out two weeks ago, but it had a problem in which a couple of pages were printed way too dark, and was supposed to be pulped. I believe this week’s printing corrects that error.

  10. And Lo, There Shall Come:

ALL STAR WESTERN #10 – I’m a regular buyer, but am extra stoked for the Garcia Lopez back up.

AMERICAN VAMPIRE #28 – a bit backlogged on these, but vampires in Hollywoodland sounds great. Albuquerque’s art looks utterly gorgeous here. Stunning stuff.

BEFORE WATCHMEN NITE OWL #1 (OF 4) – judgement witheld.

I VAMPIRE #10 – that last issue was a bit oblique, but still enjoyable. Nice in that it built expectations for a very standard new status quo (essentially the reverse of Season 2 of Walking Dead) and then went “yoink!” in the last few pages. Great art, wonderful tone and keeps me guessing! Exceeding expectations, disappointing in sales.

JOHN CARTER GODS OF MARS #4 (OF 5) – nice solid comics to cash in on a bit of IP which is now utterly radioactive.

JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK #10 – a bold new direction which is working for me quite nicely. Liking Black Orchid, Constantine is much improved and the new hook is interesting. Keep it up, Mr Lemire!

LORD OF THE JUNGLE #5 – after a brief foray into cheesecake in #3 for no discernable story reason, a return to jungle action and adventure in #4. Let’s keep that going.

    MANHATTAN PROJECTS #4 – yes!

MIND THE GAP #2 – actually got my nicely Francavilla’s cover last week (shipping screw up?) Listed here for moral support.

NEW DEADWARDIANS #4 – #3 was tremendously enjoyable and nice world building. Really liked, even if the book is awash in “vertigo brown”.

    PROPHET #26 – bringing the sci-fi crazy!

RESIDENT ALIEN #2 – I love this quiet book. Fabuolous art by Parkhouse, and great narration and heart throughout. I’m not sure at all where this book is going (nor why) but I’m intrigued enough to want to follow along.

SPACEMAN #7 – collecting for one single, big brain-destroying, read-through.

STAR WARS BLOOD TIES BOBA FETT IS DEAD #3 – fell for the graphic genius of the first cover in solicits, but have been really disapointed in this. Having already pre-ordered 1-3, I’ll see it through, but if this was six issues, I’d be dropping.

    MAGS AND BOOKS:

BACK ISSUE #57 – DC in the early 80s, as run by Jenette KHAAAAAAAN! KHAAAAAAAN!

LOEG III CENTURY #3 2009 – let fly the crazy! Hope in doesn’t beat up my copy of Night Owl. Saw pages whilest in London, and this looks stellar. Mournfully sad to be missing the signing with O’Neill and Moore.

AND OF BLESSED MEMORY, BOOKS BEING DROPPED:

ANGEL & FAITH #11 – this has just run its course. Has been reasonably fun, but that’s waned. Nice that my last issue on the book was by the awesome Chris Samnee. Good times. At least A&F has not become the big steaming pile of awful which Buffy is now.

So the score this week: DC 7 (three nu52); Image 3; Dark Horse 2, and tied with one each top Shelf, Dynamite and Marvel’s Licensing Division.
