  1. And just a minute ago, I was thinking, “Good grief! Hibbs actually forgot to post the weekly “New releases” list!” I was about to look for the list on another site!

  2. Whew! I was scared to head down the shop without writing out my shopping list! (Comics come out on Thursdays in Sydney.)

LAST WEEK: Batman #11 might very well be my last with the book – it just wasn’t enough for the end of a year long story, with a crossover, and an increased price point.
Wild Children was pretty boring, a little too desperate to be cool, and I usually enjoy the sort of thing it was trying to do.
Conan, Demon Knights, Frankenstein and Planetoid stayed good. Creepy and Eerie both had outstanding issues – Creepy will be better once the Monech/Kelly multi-part story is done, but it also had a story by Emily Carroll that was worth the price of entry, and another ripper of a Jones/Corben reprint.
Finally, The Massive and Saucer Country had issues which make me think people will hop off the fence, and just start loving the heck out of them.
All in all, a good week of comics.

DAREDEVIL #15 – Last issue was a real return to form. I’m really excited about this one.

DARK HORSE PRESENTS #14 – Last issue was a little underwhelming, as there wasn’t that much new content and Ghost was a bit meh, but I’ll stay with it a little longer. I’m really enjoying the Arcudi/Kieth Aliens story.

FATIMA THE BLOOD SPINNERS #2 (OF 4) – It’s been a month already? Wow.

GLORY #28 – I’m not too sure where this is heading, but the monster smashing looks pretty.

RED HOOD AND THE OUTLAWS #11 – They went to space last issue. I dig it.

RESET #4 (OF 4) – This feels like it’s ending before it got going, so I’m interested to see what curve-balls are coming our way.

SAGA #5 – It makes me feel all tingly knowing it’s coming.

SKULLKICKERS #16 – So there’s a cowboy and a red-headed dwarf, on a pirate ship with an all female crew, fighting a Lovecraft inspired inter-dimensional monster. It’s a laugh.

THE SPIDER #3 – #2 was a bit flat compared to the first, but like the first, it had a really good cliffhanger, which makes me want more.

BLACKSAD SILENT HELL HC – Probably too poor right now, but I do really want this. The collection Dark Horse released the other year was amazing.

  3. I’m happy to say that WONDER WOMAN #11 was sensationally good. This series is easily the best one I’ve read since the ’80s.

  4. LAST WEEK!

    BATMAN #11
Whew, glad that’s over. It should be said, the chief truth that came out of this run had nothing to do with closing the Earth 2 plothole re: Thomas Wayne but rather that Greg Capullo is f’ing awesome.

    BLOODSHOT (ONGOING) #1
This was verging on overkill but I can see, as a line, that they’re targeting specific segments of an older audience. This is the bloody one, hence the title.

CONAN THE BARBARIAN #6 and Massive #2
I’m as in sync with Wood on Conan as I am out of sync with him on Massive. That book is just not getting any traction with me. Not at all.

    HARBINGER (ONGOING) #2
So, a while back I stopped adding things to my pull because, seriously. The side effect is that my shop is constantly understocked on these Valiant books AFTER issue 1. Which, in retailer speak – I think – means demand is rising beyond expectations.

PUNK ROCK JESUS #1 (OF 6)
I liked this a lot. The title is getting some crap and deservedly so but Murphy’s art is just gorgeous and you can’t really see what’s coming around the corner. Additionally, if any human being can draw someone biting their lip and looking stressed more effectively than Sean Murphy I’d like to meet him / her.

    SAUCER COUNTRY #5
Go check out Colin’s take http://toobusythinkingboutcomics.blogspot.com/2012/07/on-story-climax-of-saucer-country-5-by.html SPOILERS AHOY!

    SHADE #10 (OF 12)
This one was a lull. The calm before the storm.

    SUPERBOY #11
I have no recollection of this comic except that it featured the participation of Tom Defalco which I found…I don’t know…weird?

    THIS WEEK er…YESTERDAY!

BPRD HELL ON EARTH DEVILS ENGINE #3 (OF 3)
Yay! They’re generally how comics should be done!

    GLORY #28
Holy crap that two page spread after the turn early on Amirite? I’m not saying this thing’s better than Lying Cat but this cat was pretty awesome.

SAGA #5 I won’t bore you with the details but Prince Robot and I shared circumstances when I flipped open the comic. Serendipitous

WONDER WOMAN #11 First WW I’d liked almost unreservedly. For those wondering, Apollo and Artemis riding up on a Trike looking like nouveau riche assholes would be the reservation.

X-O MANOWAR (ONGOING) #3 BLAST IT! See the aforementioned under ordering. It sucks that retailers can’t take chances or adjust the course quickly under the Diamond model.

  5. It will be a catch up week for me too, as I whisked Mrs. Corey (Ottawa) away for a well deserved tropical vacation. Deciding factor on the locale was there couldn’t be a comic shop on the whole island (“I’m sure I’ll be back in time for the couples’ salsa lessons hon….I just need to drive over ten villages to see if they have a copy of Night Nurse #4. I should be back in three of four hours…unless they have a dollar bin….).

So awaiting me upon my return from this tropical paradise is:

BEFORE WATCHMEN SILK SPECTRE #2 – the best Screw Alan Moore book so far.

CAPTAIN MARVEL #1 – Kelly Sue!

COBRA ONGOING #15 – Graeme got me hooked on this, and now it’s one of my favorite reads each month. Fuso’s art is awesome, and reminds me of JOCK on The Losers. And that is a very good thing.

CONCRETE THREE UNEASY PIECES ONE SHOT – awfully decent of Dark Horse to release these DHP tales seperately for us Concrete completists. (cue everyone under 30: “who’s Concrete?!”)

DAREDEVIL #15 – well, that Latveria issue was pretty damn EXCELLENT. Maybe the fan-internet can take a deep breath and just be HAPPY that this books has not collapsed. Later haters.

GLORY #28 – sounds like I have a good one waiting. You have me excited J_Smitty!

GREEN LANTERN CORPS #11 – this arc has built wonderfully. Tight plots, good use of B and C plots, great detailed art with tons of action…. This book is SO! much more satisfying than the main GL title which skipped right over space-opera and went to soap-opera. Nok.

HELLBLAZER #293 – that werewolf issue was fabulous!

MARS ATTACKS #2 – Ack! Ack! Ack!

SAGA #5 – not loving this. “Lying”

SUPERGIRL #11 – Asrar keeps bringing it. Let’s stick with the Krypton back story wich has been very compelling. This leads me to ask, however, what the main Superman book is supossed to be about?

YOUNG JUSTICE #18 – I mostly read this with Daughter (Ottawa) #1. That said, it is well-plotted with good character, zippy dialogue and nicley tuned ‘done in ones’. Why should that be so rare?

    BOOKS etc:

LONE RANGER VENDETTA SC – I have been liking the comics for quite a while now, so thought I should try the pulp-prose too. I mean, this chraracter has been a part of pop culture for what now, 70 years? I think I owe him that.

See you all soon. Until then, MAKE MINE MAI TAI!
