Arriving 7/25/2012

So, I totally fucked up and forgot the order form is due, and I haven’t even STARTED my portion of it (Matt did his parts though, so we’ll be fine… I just have to buckle down) — which means, with that and ONOMATOPOEIA and the TILTING I need to write, whoops, not going to get to the reviews for last week’s books today or tomorrow, so, yeah, probably late in the week, with two weeks jumbled together. Sorry!

  1. URGENT SHIPPING UPDATE ON BATMAN INCORPORATED #3

Out of respect for the victims and families in Aurora, Colorado DC Entertainment has made the decision to postpone the release of BATMAN INCORPORATED #3 for one month because the comic contains content that may be perceived as insensitive in light of recent events. We request that retailers do not make this issue available as previously solicited. Its new on sale date is August 22, 2012.

This includes all versions of BATMAN INCORPORATED #3, previously set to go on sale 7/25 and arriving at retail on Tuesday 7/24 and Wednesday 7/25:

    MAY 120220 BATMAN INCORPORATED #3
MAY 120221 BATMAN INCORPORATED #3 VARIANT EDITION
MAY 120222 BATMAN INCORPORATED #3 BLACK & WHITE VARIANT EDITION
MAY 120223 BATMAN INCORPORATED #3 COMBO PACK

Please note that the Digital version of this title will also be postponed.

Retailers will receive a credit for invoiced copies with their 08/01/2012 invoices from Diamond.

Please do not make this issue available at this time. Please hold the copies. If you have any questions, please contact Vince Letterio at DC Entertainment.

  2. I can hear eBay drooling from here…

  3. A hefty week, none of which I will have time to get to.

ALL STAR WESTERN #11 – the focus on Tellula made #10 a real winner. Moritat really was on his game.

AMERICAN VAMPIRE #29 – Albuquerque was in peak form, last ish. This should be stellar.

BEFORE WATCHMEN COMEDIAN #2 – Not sure why JMS felt the need to rewrite the JFK/Marilyn bit, but he did.

EVERYBODY LOVES TANK GIRL #1 – If they don’t, they should.

EXILE PLANET OF THE APES #4 – last issue bogged down a bit in weighty issues, and muddled inks. Expect thing to end with a bang here. BOOM’s Apes books have been very well done, and are worth the effort to seek out.

I VAMPIRE #11 – Zombies vs vampires. Seen it. Still, should be lovely.

JOHN CARTER GODS OF MARS #5 – wrapping up. I expect Carter will go into the Disney vault and it will be another 35 years until we get a Barsoom comic.

MANHATTAN PROJECTS #5 – Book of the Week early leader. #4 took everything I thought I knew about this book, balled it up, deep fried it, and made me eat it.

NATIONAL COMICS ETERNITY #1 – intrigues me.

    PROPHET #27 – awesome sci-fi every month.

RESIDENT ALIEN #3 – #2 got too wordy, too plot hammered and too busy. Hopefully we can tie things up, with the air and heart restored. This was been a solid GOOD so far.

SPACEMAN #8 (OF 9) – saving these for a massive mind blowing read-a-thon.

STAR WARS BLOOD TIES BOBA FETT IS DEAD #4 – last issue was the best so far. Not sure what I expected, but this has been a bit wide of the mark.

SUPERMAN FAMILY ADVENTURES #3 – Aw yeah, Krypton!

WINTER SOLDIER #8 – “it’s not the first bomb I’ve rode” Superb book, this is. Well done Brubaker. Well done indeed.

    BOOKS and such:

BACK ISSUE #58 – JLA issue with lots on offer. I think I might be most looking forward to the Gerry Conway-Geoff Johns fireside chat, on how they write the League.

KISS GREATEST HITS TP VOL 01 – no blood mixed in the ink, but the price is right.

  4. ADDENDA: not sure how I missed it but LORD OF THE JUNGLE #6 and NEW DEADWARDIANS #5 are also on my list. Both have picked up the pace, and are delivering on their potential quite nicely. VERY GOOD stuff there from Vertigo, and a solid GOOD from Lord Greystoke.

  5. LAST WEEK!
I already talked through everything I picked up last week so I will instead simply fast forward to…

    THIS WEEK!

    BATMAN INCORPORATED #3
Throwing in 2 cents on the delay I think it’s absolutely the right call to err on the side of caution and good taste. If it’s that bad, pull it completely. Anyone who can’t prioritize this needs a lesson in civility and human decency.

DC COMICS PRESENTS WONDER WOMAN ADVENTURES #1
Having not read solicits I’m hoping this is an all ages thing. I’ve recently started stocking free comics at the donut shop that advertise my local comics place and I like to be able to set them out without screening them for content.

    PROPHET #27
Love it – Let it wander.

    SPACEMAN #8 (OF 9)
Needs to have a good closing couplet for me to sign off on money well spent.

  6. Well, i remember the Graduation Day episode of Buffy got pushed back after Columbine, but was there a comic that got pulled under similar circumstances before?

  7. Hellblazer 141 by Warren Ellis and Phil Jimenez, “Shoot,” was cancelled entirely by DC because it would’ve come out shortly after Columbine.

    http://www.qusoor.com/hellblazer/141.htm

  8. Yeah, call me cynical but I think 90% of the reason DC pushed Inc back was because of fear for blowback. It’s extremely unlikely that any of the victims or their families would have read that comic, much less that they’d have been offended by a scene obviously written and drawn weeks ago.

That probably sounds insensitive. Personally, it spooked me out to even see guns in the Dark Knight Rises film this weekend. That made me feel a bit bad, actually. And, who knows, maybe the scene in Inc #3 really IS too close for comfort.

But pushing it back an entire month? Will Inc #4 be pushed back as well? Of course, these are relatively petty issues, but it always seems like Morrison and his Bat-artists are finding new ways to take longer on their projects.

Oh, and now DC is getting positive mainstream coverage for pushing this comic back. So it seems convenient. They get positive press from this, and Chris Burnham gets even more lead time. Maybe I’m just too used to always seeing how companies play the media one way or the other. On one level I think if we could separate reality from fiction and have more respect for human life, then we wouldn’t have so much violence in real life, or quite so much over-the-top desensitizing violence in our fiction.

  9. BATMAN INCORPORATED #3 – They pull this book, but not the film? The film had a zillion scenes of dudes running into rooms and shooting guns at civilians. It was hard to think of anything else whilst it was on.

DEBRIS #1 (OF 4) – The art looked nice in the previews.

    HAUNT #25 –

MANHATTAN PROJECTS #5 – Who will turn out to be a doppelganger this issue?

NEW DEADWARDIANS #5 (OF 8) – I think this book should win Eisner awards for ‘Best Pun In Title’ and ‘Best at making you forget how sick of vampires and zombies in pop culture you are right now’.

PROPHET #27 – When this gets collected in a big omnibus in the future, the kiddies will laugh at us lame-o’s for being so puzzled by this book.

RESIDENT ALIEN #3 – He’s the alien posed as a doctor, who is investigating a murder, but would rather be fishing. The arts really nice. I hope this gets another mini.

SUPER DINOSAUR #12 – He’s a talking dinosaur side-kick, with missile launchers on his back! How is this not the book setting the sales records?

    SUPERMAN FAMILY ADVENTURES #3 –

TRIO #3 – If I’m feeling generous. I don’t hate it, but there’s nothing to love. I just like that John Byrne is stubbornly doing whatever it is he wants to do, with no care if anybody else likes it.

BACK ISSUE #58 – I’ll grab this digitally, once I’ve finished last months issue.

HAUNT #25 – I don’t know that the concept of Haunt actually works all that well, but I don’t think Casey or Fox care.

SUPER DINOSAUR #12 – He’s a talking dinosaur side-kick, with missile launchers on his back! How is this not the book setting the sales records?

SUPERMAN FAMILY ADVENTURES #3 – The most fun there is!

  11. My LCS is selling Batman Inc 3. Should I report them to the authorities, in exchange for a new identity in a glamourous locale?

Also, are they any consequences they could actually face?

  12. My shop hadn’t heard about the delay when I bought my books yesterday, and I was mildly surprised to see the new Batman Inc. in my pull list. They’re a lot more than a comic shop, so maybe they hadn’t had the time to check their emails.

My copy of Batman Inc. #3 also had two covers, a random error I haven’t seen in decades–since my issue of What If by Frank Miller where Matt Murdock joined SHIELD.
