Arriving 7/28/2010

Reviews soon — order form and ONONMATOPOEIA first…

By the number of comics shipping this week one might guess there was some sort of, dunno, major comic book convention or something? Next week, I suppose, for the flood of TPs and GNs…

  1. ACTION COMICS #891
BATMAN RETURN OF BRUCE WAYNE #4 (OF 6)
    FLASH #4 (BRIGHTEST DAY)
    GLAMOURPUSS #14
JUSTICE LEAGUE GENERATION LOST #6 (BRIGHTEST DAY)

    Hmm, no trades.
    Maybe Sable omnibus?
Was planning to pick up James Sturm’s ‘Market Day’ this week anyway – just read America. Great stuff.

  2. UNKNOWN SOLDIER

Once that ends and Morrison is off BATMAN & ROBIN, I think I’m down to one or two monthlies a month.

  3. The World War Hulks stuff have been oddly mesmerizing. On the one hand, they’re kind of distasteful in the way Marvel is milking one of the least interesting aspects of the Hulk crossover. On the other hand, it has been utterly fascinating to watch the lengths Monsieurs Parker, Gillen, Clevinger, and Tobin go to in order to squeeze life out of the weakest concept ever.

  4. (I’m referring just to Hulked Out Heroes, Spider-Man vs Thor, and Wolverine vs Captain America, BTW. The rest of the Hulk crossover is high quality, and Jeph Loeb.)

  5. Comics! Thousands of them! (N.B. This is not strictly true.)

    7 PSYCHOPATHS #3
(Let’s Hunt And Kill Adolf Hitler! With added Sean Philips!)
    AMERICAN VAMPIRE #5
(If only they sparkled as well this would be the dreamiest!)
BATMAN RETURN OF BRUCE WAYNE #4
(Batman! Swimming up the Time-stream like a great Darkseid propelled trout of doom!)
BATMAN THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD #19
(Try explaining “Cancelled” to a four year old, DC! Go on!)
BILLY BATSON AND THE MAGIC OF SHAZAM #18
(The magic of Mr. Mike Norton!)
    FIRST WAVE #3
(Pulp heroes of the past giving the present a good drubbing. Getcher Pulp on!)
GI JOE HEARTS AND MINDS #3
    (Mr. Howard Victor Chaykin.)
    GLAMOURPUSS #14
(Seems those old timey dead guys who could draw were actually pretty interesting.)
    NORTHLANDERS #30
    (New arc! Jump on!)
    PUNISHERMAX #9
    (Aaron! Nastiness!)
    RASL #8
    (Really Awesome Sequential Literature.)
    UNKNOWN SOLDIER #22
(Remember when he killed Hitler? Too late, 7 Psycopaths!)
    USAGI YOJIMBO #130
(That’d be Japanese for Faultless Entertainment, I guess.)
    WOLVERINE WEAPON X #15
(Is Deathlok’s fave song “If I could Turn Back Time…” by the fragrant Cher? It should be. Deathlok! Aaron! Cher!)
YOURS TRULY JACK THE RIPPER #2
    (Mr. Joe R. Lansdale hissownself.)

I hope my missus doesn’t see this list because they all look good to ME!

  6. OK, this looks good to me because I just bought it:
ACTION COMICS #891: Alright, I didn’t buy this, but I like Paul Cornell & heard good things about his 1st Luthor issue, but the ubiquitous preview didn’t do it for me; is this good?
AMERICAN VAMPIRE #5: I liked the 1st issue more for the Scott Snyder written front than the Big Steve King back, but over the subsequent issues the Snyder story has gone flat & a bit confusing, while King seems to have found his rhythm as a “new” comics writer and kinda rocks. Since this is King’s last issue it’ll have to impress me to buy #6.
BATMAN RETURN OF BRUCE WAYNE #4 (OF 6): Georges Jeanty? I’ve got nothing against him, but wasn’t this supposed to be Cameron Stewart’s chapter of the saga? Have I gone weeks in waiting for a new Sin Titulo post to see the man replaced? Anyway, didn’t buy it.
GREEN LANTERN #56 (BRIGHTEST DAY): I think this has lots of Larfleeze. I WANT IT!
JUSTICE LEAGUE GENERATION LOST #6 (BRIGHTEST DAY): I hate crossovers, but I got sucked into Sinestro Corps and then Blackest Night, & when it was over, what, I gotta buy Brightest Day? F that! But I’m a sucker for the JLI so I gave this a shot, & enjoyed the characterization & the slowly building plot & it’s probably the best successor DC’s come up with to 52 & the more than monthly comics game, then (this is the 1 comic I’ve read yet) it’s basically a Captain Atom solo story. Bad thing, right? No, this totally blew apart the story, served up intriguing plot twists, provided one of those “only in comics could this work” crazy moments, & got me on board for the rest of the series. Still wish Aaron Lopresti could draw every issue though.
RASL #8: A hard one to pass up, but I decided to buy this series in the oversized trades, because that’s the way Smith wanted it! Plus I think it reads better that way. And I’m not a “wait-for-the-trades” guy. I think this is my 1st.
TORCHWOOD #1: Despite the plethora of new comics this week, there wasn’t a lot I wanted, so I picked this up, because Captain Jack actually wrote it with his sister, & because I’m an Anglophile & was glad that Titan UK produced this rather than one of the American licensing shills.
Sorry, that was a bit long of a response to the simple “What Looks Good to You?” question. Was John K’s longer?

  7. It beggars belief that no one has yet mentioned that B:TROBW is the one where Batcowboy vs. Jonah Hex! Sockamagee! Oh, and I’ll try and work on that brevity thing. I do buy all those things that look good to me. Which is why I have to sleep in the shed.

  8. Brandon, you’re aware Morrison will be launching Batman Inc., yes?
