Arriving 7/4/2012

THAT DATE IS NOT A TYPO! New Comics Day IS on Wednesday, the 4th of July! Check with your local store to see their hours; Comix Experience will be open from 11-5, with the slight possibility of staying later than that if business is brisk (We’ve never had to face this) — it’s not like fireworks start until like 9!

Big week, too

  1. So, is the Marvel “Muppets” book a reprint of the Boom material?

  2. The solicitation reads:

“• Kermit and the gang put on a show to celebrate spring’s arrival at the Muppet Theatre! • A special guest – Meredith the Mountain Gorilla – arrives to perform on the Muppet Show, and her many admirers compete for her affections. “”(W/A/CA) TBD”

So, it’s not Boom! material… but at press time of solicit, they had no idea who was DOING it.

    That’s probably changed since.

  3. Avengers vs X-Men #7:
I didn’t like the whole idea of the Phoenix 5 to begin with, but last issue was certainly a step up in terms of both art and story. I still just want this event to be over, but I’m not quite cringing at reading this issue this time.

    World’s Finest #3:
Scrappy heroines with a shared tragic past do pretty conventional fun super-hero stuff! Nice artwork by Perez helps make this an amusing buy. Nothing ground-breaking, but solid so far.

    Dreadstar Omnibus – maybe:
I thought this was going to be a hard-cover, which I’d be very interested in. But Hibbs’ listing above makes it sounds like a paperback? Not as interested… The book itself is a classic of the sci-fi superhero genre, however! Starlin at the top of his game!

  4. I believe that Muppet collects what was going to be a four-part arc Langridge did for Boom (although I’m not sure if all of it is in there or not), dealing with the four seasons. But then whatever happened with Boom, Dinsey and Marvel happened. It ran overseas; this is the first time it will be available in the U.S. That’s what I believe.

Wait, I have an Internet connection…Yes, on April 14th on his hotelfred.com, Langridge mentioned that a muppets comic about the seasons was being printed in Italy, but he didn’t know if it was gonna be printed in the U.S. or not. I’d link to the post, but I can’t figure out how to.

  5. LAST WEEK

BATMAN INCORPORATED #2 I like how Morrison always opts to show you the work behind the work when it suits him. Seeing Talia’s rise here gives her instant credibility as another of Bruce’s “mirrors.” As someone without an encyclopedic knowledge of the character I’d taken her as I’d always seen her – Ras’ coddled daughter. I didn’t really think or believe she’d gone through much as a character. For me, anyway, in one issue Morrison takes Talia from wallflower to high level threat. That’s good work. Also, Burnham is great. Just great to look at.

    JUSTICE LEAGUE #10
So, apparently, I’d been skipping this book. Damn aneurysm. Anyway, it was terrible. Aquaman picks up a cruise ship with his bare fucking hands. I mean, would it have killed you to show him using whales to move it or something? Nah, just have him lift it out of the water. I mean, he can do…that…right? And, as someone who spent a lot of money on Jim Lee’s comics over the years I have to say this is the worst I’ve seen him. Muddy. Background dominating foreground when it’s not appropriate. Layouts that make reading a medium I’ve been looking at for the better part of my life confusing. Bad. Your comic sucks. I will not buy another issue.

PROPHET #26 lobotomized Angry Birds as some type of organic hacking job? Weird robots? Washed out monochromatic presentation? I like that this thing has a sense of scale that’s not a one panel put on. They take time letting the enormity of the whole conceit fill you up and spill out. At this point we;re swimming in a very large body of water with not clue where we’re supposed to swim. I love it. If it were a conventional plot we’d be calling out, “Oh, can’t wait for x moment or y moment.” Instead, 5 issues in, we’re not even sure who we should be rooting for and it’s still thrilling. That’s a brave choice not easily packaged for a trade.

    SPACEMAN #7 (OF 9)
Our boy got knocked around pretty good in this issue. Risso delivered some really nice work. This is going to need a re-read because the whole plan of the Spacemen is starting to seem pretty nonsensical to me. Maybe that’s just because they’re slightly dumb? Hmmm.

    THIS WEEK!
This is my big week out of the monthly cycle…

ACTION COMICS #11 – I’m trying to feel my way through this new take. Scratching the identity plate has me confused for now but it could be a Morrison take on the classic Silver Age trope wherein Clark has to jump through hoops to convince people he wasn’t really Superman after all.

PW: “It’s only me, Jimmy…Perry White! Superman asked me to pose as him before!”

SUPES: “You see, I keep that hollow Superman dummy on hand for special occasions! Clark Kent has worn it often for me, which is why he’s sometimes accused…er…of being me!”

(Actual dialogue. Notable: Superman costume completely transforms Perry’s build and also has a mask. So…Clark is mistaken for him why?)

Anyway, I likes it so I buys it.

CREATOR OWNED HEROES #2 (Grinds teeth) Phil Noto draws pretty.

    DANGER CLUB #3
Buying digitally – Love the art and style switches. Big cliffhanger at the end of 2. Also, BIG ROBOT ACTION ACTION ACTION!

    DIAL H #3
Still building steam with me. I liked 2 better than 1 so hopefully that trend continues.

    EARTH 2 #3
Robinson has really been delivering. I’m really pleased that (for me anyway) his work has come back to the form and feeling so prevalent in his earlier material. I don’t begrudge artists growth at all but some are SO good at certain styles there is a joy in just seeing that work delivered to a page.

    INVINCIBLE #93
I love this book. Free hand. Free wheeling. Epic.

    WORLDS FINEST #3
    Maguire > Perez

    BATMAN EARTH ONE HC
Maybe. Listening to the podcast to see if Graeme continues to squee.

SHOWCASE PRESENTS SHOWCASE TP VOL 01
WUT? If it’s half as insane as Showcase Presents Superman Family (from which the above quotes were pulled) this baby is coming home with me.

  6. Last Week – Chaos struck! So I’m having to cut down a lot on what I buy – the economy and all that – and I was only able to get to the shop yesterday.
Of the couple I have read, Batman Inc #2 was an example of everything that’s right about this take on the character, whilst Justice League #10 was an example of everything that’s wrong about this take on the characters, and I think I’m done with it.

ACTION COMICS #11 – I recently re-read the first ten. This book is great fun.

DANGER CLUB #3 – Has there been an extended gap between issues? Really looking forward to it. This should be generating more buzz than it is.

DIAL H #3 – #2 was freaking amazing. I can’t wait to see what heroes they come up with to top the excellent creations last issue.

EARTH 2 #3 – I’m still a bit on the fence, but I think this is a stronger launch of a series than most of the nu52 had.

GREEN ARROW #11 – The done-in-one didn’t quite do it for me last month, but it sure highlighted Noncenti for being a more interesting superhero writer than most at the moment. Felt like something a late-90’s Warren Ellis would have dropped into a run.

HAUNT #24 – This books gone off schedule hasn’t it? I can’t remember what went before, except that Nathan Fox’s art makes me weak in the knees.

MIND MGMT #2 – Matt ‘Motherfuckin’ Kindt! How good was that first issue? He’s launched his first ongoing in a line with Peter Bagge and Gilbert Hernandez, and done it with his head held high.

MORNING GLORIES #20 – I read this in big chunks, like I’m trade waiting, yet I get it in monthly issues. It’s the weird exception to my usual reading patterns.

BAKUMAN TP VOL 12 – I’ll get this when I’ve got a little less to read stacked up. It’ll probably be better than everything else, so it’s best to give it some space.

BATMAN EARTH ONE HC – Was ready to ignore this until Graeme raved on the podcast.

  7. Just got through our national holiday on July 1 (145 years years and counting since Britain slid us a little cash and helped us set up our own apartment), so I had some extra time to get caught up on the reading.

Prepare for the CANADA DAY COMIC CATCH-UP!

    LAST WEEK:

ALL STAR WESTERN #10 – I had sung Moritat’s praises high and low for The Spirit, but his Jonah has been very hit and miss for me. This issue tho, the art REALLY worked. And the Garcia-Lopez Bat-Lash was stellar. A shared and high VERY GOOD all around.

AMERICAN VAMPIRE #28 – Snyder’s voice in this is so clear and direct, and Albequerque is at the top of his game. EXCELLENT.

BEFORE WATCHMEN NITE OWL #1 – Formula and convention keep this from much more than EH! And a city cries out: “why bother”? And I laugh.

I VAMPIRE #10 – Conflicted. Sorrentino’s art is lovely (if slavishly devoted to Jae Lee) and there are some great twists of dialogue, but it is really not doing anything for me. EH!

JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK #10 – another where I love the characters, it has strong art, and I think the ideas are potentially intiguing but the package just isn’t working. EH!

LORD OF THE JUNGLE #5 – OKAY in that we finally get out of the jungle, and are going to be moving ahead.

MANHATTAN PROJECTS #4 – Einstein too!? Holy frak you broke my head! EXCELLENT.

NEW DEADWARDIANS #4 – Found its voice last issue, and showed great confidence this issue. VERY GOOD stuff.

RESIDENT ALIEN #2 – just OKAY. Too much murder mystery focus this time.

STAR WARS BLOOD TIES BOBA FETT IS DEAD #3 – OKAY tending to EH. Vader’s appearance was awesome though.

    THIS WEEK:

ACTION COMICS #11 – could only be better if someone used a Hostess Fruit Pie to stop a crime.

BEFORE WATCHMEN OZYMANDIAS #1 – nobody’s favorite Minuteman gets a chance to shine via Jae Lee. Lower my expectations? I did that 25 minutes ago.

CREATOR OWNED HEROES #2 CVR B – see J_Smitty above. grumble, mumble, Phil Noto…

EARTH 2 #3 – this has been a total surprise. The gore filled covers had me throughly distinterested, but Roberston has been doing here WHAT THE ENTIRE nu52 SHOULD HAVE BEEN DOING FOR A YEAR NOW: world building and bringing new ideas to old concepts. And for you kids, there was a B plot and a C plot in this issue. You may be confused, but its okay. This is how comics used to be.

DANGER CLUB #3 – still interested to see where this goes. Hopefully somewhere that BRAT PACK and IRREDEEMABLE haven’t already gone.

DIAL H #3 – started strong, and keeps building.

GI COMBAT #3 – I remain greatly underwhelmed, but am trying to give it a bit of time to find its footing. Unknown Soldier was the better strip in issue 2, surprisingly.

    MIND MGMT #2 – blown.

MUPPETS#1 – it’s time to light the lights! It’s time to get things started….!

NIGHT FORCE #5 – last of my pre-orders for this. This simply has not worked for me.

ROCKETEER ADVENTURES 2 #4 – last issue was the first I felt lacked the charm and heart of Stevens’ original. Nostalgia is hard, and nostagia ABOUT nostalgia, is harder yet. Still, it’s been a great series and a return to two-fisted fun. Looking foward to the new Samnee run for sure.

THE LONE RANGER #7 – I don’t think I’ll be visiting Utopia if’n I git down to those parts: them folks aint right. Nicley done Western, with the sense of isolation really working on the page.

THIEF OF THIEVES #6 – last issue set the caper, so we’ll see if the schemes start turning this issue.

Enjoy the 4th you Savage Patriots! Keep the comics back away from the explosives and try not not mix in too many Hibbs-Bosons particles with the beer, or you’ll get a tummy ache!
