Arriving 8/1/2012

August already? Man, Ben goes back to school in like 3 weeks, that’s insane. Plus we’ve been attacked this weekend by the world’s most inept spammer — lots of spammy nonsense comments, but they’ve forgot the part where they link to their  watch knockoff site…

Well, lots of yummy comics for our first ship week of the month!

  1. My kids are already back at school. I have had to import labor from out-of-state to help me pick up my comics this week.

    All three titles…

(Daredevil, Love and Capes, and World’s Finest. What is lacks in size, the week definitely makes up for in quality!)

  2. Yikes, this is a big week for serial comics and me: Action, Daredevil, Defenders, Invincible Iron Man, the subtly wonderful Mind Mgmt, Muppets (Langridge!), The Shadow–and I may add the awfully pretty looking Hawkeye, as I’m dropping more than half of those books in the next few months as their current creators leave.

The Avengers Trial of Yellowjacket trade collects the second most-grueling storyline of my childhood (the first being the disintegration & death of Rick Flag in Suicide Squad–spoilers!) and I lost most of my old Avengers comics somewhere along the line, so that may be a pickup.

  3. LAST WEEK – Every book I got was gold, so it was a great week of comic reading. Spur of the moment purchases Punk Rock Jesus and X-treme X-Men were both better than I’d expected, the latter being much better than it really has any right to be – it’s good. Near Death was as tense as ever. The store got short shipped on New Deadwardians, so I’m still awaiting that one.

ACTION COMICS #12 – My heart grew a little colder with the word that G-Mozz was leaving, because I really like this run. The 5th dimension are invading.

BEASTS OF BURDEN NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH ONE SHOT – These are always good.

BLACK KISS II #1 (OF 6) – A lot of Jewish boys are about to learn they can get blow-jobs, all over again.

DAREDEVIL #16 – The solicits say Murdoch/Nelson are breaking up. I hope that ain’t so, and am oddly nervous about the storyline.

DIAL H #4 – This is off the hook crazy, thus it’s great.

EARTH 2 #4 – I’m keen to see who is the next JSA member to appear, so I think this series is working for me.

GREEN ARROW #12 – Nocenti makes this a book worth reading.

    HAWKEYE #1 – Mmmmaybe. It’ll get a flick through.

MIND MGMT #3 – A perfect comic book?

    MIND THE GAP #3 – I don’t mind this.

SHADOW #4 – The Shadow fights the rising sun. Not a bad series.

THE SPIDER #4 – This book is kind of wild. I’m still on the fence, but I want to see where they go with it. The update they’ve given the character works well – it’s a good set-up for a character.

  4. In the future there will be:

    ACTION COMICS #12
    ANIMAL MAN #12
(I’m pretty sure this is just the same comic every month but with the pages jiggled around in a different order. Are they still in that ****ing van?! DROPPING.)
    BLACK KISS II #1
(Another elegantly crafted outing by an elder statesman of comics, being a no doubt joyful celebration of the highs and lows of this miracle which is Life. Or it’ll be smut. Could go either way, really. Ahem.)
    DAREDEVIL #16
(In which the Murdock-Nelson partnership becomes strained to the limit when Foggy reluctantly points out that it isn’t Battlin’ Jack Murdock’s finger Matt’s keeping in his drawer.)
    IZOMBIE #28
    MIND MGMT #3
(Matt Kindt! Where’s Matt Kindt’s 5th printing, eh? Forget that Star Wars by IKEA stuff, put that people in hats versus tentacles TV-pitch tedium down, get Matt Kindt his 5th printing! Matt Kindt! 5th printing! Ticker tape tour of each of the States! His own mug in the pub! A free session in one of those places where fish eat the dead skin off of your feet! Nothing’s too good for Matt Kindt! Except a 5th printing, apparently! Sort it out!)
    RASL #15
(Is this the last issue? I’ll miss RASL’s disturbingly large bobbly head most of all.)
    SHADOW #4
    (Howard Victor Chaykin cover!)
    SWEET TOOTH #36

And those there are my COMICS!!!

  5. THIS WEEK!

ACTION COMICS #12 – I’ve bought each of these and while it’s been uneven I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t anticipating these last issues. It’ll be interesting to see him go out with a countdown.

BLACK KISS II #1 (OF 6) – Did you know that the Howard Victor Chaykin tag now has 15 topics?

DIAL H #4 – In a kinder, gentler comics world the years between 1988 and now would have been filled with this type of material. Characters churning out left and right. Some hits – a lot of misses – and some very memorable stories that in hindsight we could all look back on and talk about in reverent tones.

EARTH 2 #4 – Oy, that last issue. Pacing, dialogue, character development…all very, very worrying. Personally, I’m hoping Robinson was just stressing re: the whole non-issue / mainstream media apocalypse of Alan Scott’s being gay. I can’t help but feel – if not an outright fumble – the baton was not taken cleanly between 3 and 4. #Olympicsreference #timely #tapedelayedtimely

    MERCILESS RISE OF MING #3
    Sure, why not?

    SHADOW #4
Shadow is quite boss at the wanton killing.

    WORLDS FINEST #4
I like this series. I don’t know. It feels hammy and a little precious in the way that the girls relate to each other but if you grant that their “Earth” in general was a kinder, gentler, and more generally naive place…then you’ll likely forgive it and wait for Kevin Maguire to draw purty.

@Ben Lipman – If you give Hawkeye a flick, you’ll buy it. Aja is just so on fire right now. I can’t – so I won’t – but consider that money spent if you flip through. If this is Fraction’s “get my smile back” book I would say it’s almost a lock that he handpicked Aja.

  6. In for all books of the Matt Fraction Invasion, plus Action!, Avenging Spider-Man, BLACK KISS 2.1, and (the crossover only I could possibly have wanted) Dark Shadows/Vampirella. Plus a mess of 2000 AD-related stuff (the Dreddzine and the Absalom GN).

  7. @J_Smitty _ Aja isn’t the reason I want to give Hawkeye a flick through before committing to it. He’s not let me down with almost every book he’s done, since showing such initial promise.

  8. If it helps, guys, in advance of a proper review, HAWKEYE #1 was pretty genuinely wonderful as a comic book.

  9. Good Day!
I have been trying to get a copy of BLACK KISS II #1 because I know EVERYONE is super-excited to hear what I think about it.

My LCS retailer couldn’t find it in his delivery and is “investigating”. Have any other non-Americans had problems?

  10. Word was – via the twitter machine – that most UK copies got customs busted. I will search for the actual, you know, proof.

  11. Oh, right…Graeme wrote it. I think Bleeding Cool as well.

    http://blog.newsarama.com/2012/07/31/report-black-kiss-2-held-by-uk-customs/

  12. @J_Smitty: Oh, thanks. That’s great! Well, it clearly isn’t, but it’s great that you knew what was going on.

Oh, what have you gone and done now, Howard Victor Chaykin! You big rascal!

  13. It will be a monster week for me too, and I doubt I will have time to read abnything as I figure out ways to bypass HM Customs agents and get JohnK(UK) his illicit HVC before he succumbs to Olympic Fever(tm, London Olympic Organizing Cte 2012).

BEFORE WATCHMEN NITE OWL #2 (preordered…sadly before I knew just how slavish it was to batman baggage)

BLACK KISS II #1 – I still remember the look on my face as I got to the final page of BK #1. Good times, good times….. And if Ben Lipman’s tag quote isn’t used by Image on the cover for a future issue, I will think less of them.

DAREDEVIL #16 – is this weekly now?

DIAL H #4 – can’t say it better than Ben Lipman or J_Smitty

EARTH 2 #4 – yeah, last issue really didn’t work. But I have faith (tm, Joss Whedon). Still going to stay away from bullet trains for the near future however. #BoyfriendsinaFridge

GI COMBAT #4 – I would have expected a bit more whimsy on the War That Time Forgot strip. It’s too serious and that is killing the fun factor. And if you can’t make soldiers fighting dinosaurs FUN, than you really aren’t trying, are you? That said, Forgotten Soldier has gone for madcap, over the top violence, so strangely, that strip *is* working for me.

    HAWKEYE #1 – Aja.

MIND MGMT #3 – I hope JohnK(UK) gets put on the Eagle Awards committee next year, just so he can get Matt Kindt! some hardware.

MIND THE GAP #3 – still befuddled over why both MIND books are always in the same week.

SWAMP THING #12 – last of my preorders for Swampy, and thus I close the book on this. DROPPED. And though I will probably be de-listed from Mike Sterling’s X-Mas card mailings as well, I just cannot handle the Rot any more.

THE LONE RANGER #8 – did not really enjoy the all-Tonto issue #7 that much…conversely the Chuck Dixon spin-off book was VERY GOOD stuff indeed.

SHADOW #4 – Issue #3 worked just about perfectly for me.

THE SPIDER #4 – hunh. I missed ordering #3, but from the quick flip I had of it, seems like I’m not missing much. Egyptian nihilist god wannabe’s? No thanks. Likely DROPPED after this, as my pulp itch is being ably scratched by the blazing .45s of the Shadow.

THIEF OF THIEVES #7 – Nice caper book, and Martinborough is at the top of his game. With apologies to all the speculators/investors out there, I just don’t see how this will make much of a TV series, however.

#comics! They are what I am reading, until JohnK gets back from his customs-busting swim accross to Belgium for the bootlegged Flemmish language version of Black Kiss 2.0!

  14. So…having Rags Morales only do like 3 pages was the secret to making Action Comics f’ing amazing?

  15. @JohnK (UK) – oh lordy, my friend! Do you need to read BK2. Made me think I had misremembered the part in BK1 where its all about an evil tentacle monster. Yeah …..its about how you think that would go.

  16. @Corey (Ottawa): Your customs are a slack bunch! Glad you got yours, anyway. Remember, if anyone sees it you don’t know how it got there!

  17. I got a copy, and if it clears Australian customs who tried to ban both Preacher and From Hell, and Canadian customs, who like to lock up people who read manga, then I’d say it’s just an Olympics thing with the book not getting into UK – when Australia had it, anything slightly suspect got held up awhile as they were being much more diligent in their searches. I just can’t see UK customs really not letting a comic in for featuring a cock monster!

    Hawkeye was rather swell.
