Arriving 8/18/2010

Brian Hibbs

Crazy week of life for me — took our one and only week of “vacation” to Tahoe (wow, sunny; and floating down a river is tons of fun), and Ben starts (gulp!) Second grade today… this is way too early to start school, IMO.

I have to write a TILTING this week (after I decide what I’m going to write ABOUT), but, now that I don’t have to think about Ben in the mornings any longer, my writing “free” time should shoot straight up, so reviews in a day or three, once I get caught up on everything else (that’s the sucky part of vacation — coming back to all of the work that’s built up….)

It’s another teeny week of comics, this time — glad I don’t have to pay rent on a comics shop, or anything… Oh. Wait….

  1. Every week you call thin ends up being one of my big-ticket trips to the LCS.

    Age of Heroes
    Avengers and Infinity Gauntlet
    Avengers Academy
    Atlas
    Secret Avengers
    Thunderbolts

  2. Same here – a fair size week.

EX MACHINA #50 – Hail and farewell!

GREEN LANTERN CORPS #51 – another farewell for me, as the gas has run out of this series. It’s still fine superheroics and very well done at that, but I can take or leave it. So I’m leaving it.

HELLBLAZER #270 – my current favorite book! I’m shocked too! Peter Milligan is getting it perfect.

SECRET AVENGERS #4 – this might be it…for what OUGHT to be the best Avengers book, featuring a great artist and one of my favorite writers.

SPIRIT #5 – While the recent lighter (read: cartoony) Spirit series was fun, THIS new series has grabbed me by the collar and made me read it. I wonder how many people have passed it by thinking it was unchanged. Great stuff, particularly the new team of Hine and Moritat. Wow. Of course, I’d probably still buy it just for this issue’s Lapham/Kaluta back up!

SUPERGIRL #55 – I like fun in my straight ahead superheroics, with a dash of drama and humanity. Who would guess that quirk would have me reading Supergirl AND Batgirl for the first time ever! Fun stuff.

THUNDERBOLTS #147 – Very early Morrison ‘Doom Patrol’ vibe to this now, which is good (really!). When the T-Bolts cross-over with Shadowland, however, my shopping dollars will be elsewhere. That’s a decision which baffles me.

Title of the week goes to “MGM DRIVE IN THEATER #2: IT!! TERROR FROM BEYOND STARS!” Neat concept, but I think I’ll pass. Isn’t part of the fun of a schlocky movie (or a drive-in, for that matter) the actual MOVIE!? Besides, all that popcorn gets my funny-book all greasy.

  3. BRIGHTEST DAY, BULLETPROOF COFFIN, and maybe that DREDD trade if there are copies left and stuff I haven’t read within it.

  4. @Corey, I’m curious about what makes the Thunderbolt comics similar to Grant Morrison’s early issues of Doom Patrol, as I can’t really think of many comics (including Morrison’s own work) that’s similar to DP. Are they really surreal? Or just full of superheroes with tragic and alienating super-powers?

Just don’t tell me it’s because the artist is aping Richard Case!

  5. These and maybe a couple of other things look good to ME:

    DC UNIVERSE LEGACIES #4
I’m just fair grooving on seeing the masters of comic art going to town on the history of the DCU. It’s like The Expendables but with comic artists instead of action stars I have no interest in.

    HELLBLAZER #270
Man alive, I just dug out an old Ditko Shade t’other night. That’s some weird deal right there. This here is a great comic, but it can’t out-weird Mr. Steve “D is for” Ditko. Who could?

    MARVEL UNIVERSE VS PUNISHER #2
Goran Parlov is it? He can draw, yes he can. And here he is doing just that.

    TINY TITANS #31
    Aw, yeah!

WEIRD WORLD OF JACK STAFF #4
I think I recall that Mr. Alex Toth said nice things about Mr. Paul Grist. And Mr. Alex Toth was hardly one to shower words of favour willy nilly. So, there you go, then.

    WOLVERINE WEAPON X #16
Jason Aaron – if they cancel his books they will reboot them and he will come back more powerful than you can imagine! Jason Aaron – survivor type!

    Comics!

  6. Woo, sorry to see the Superman review disappear. I guess it had something to do with confidentiality and your getting an advance copy. I had little faith in DC’s ability to do HC novels with the talent announced, and with your review, my suspicions were pretty much confirmed. Thanks for the effort, though, I’m glad I got a chance to read it, and you were honest enough to post it.

  7. It was entirely and 100% my own fault for not understanding that these copies were different from other galleys they’ve sent me. I completely understand and support their request for me to remove it.

I suspect I’ll repost it the week after the book is released.

I vote we stop discussing it for now, however.
