Arriving 8/22/2012

Damn, first day of school in San Francisco — Ben’s in fourth grade already? Preposterous!

To celebrate, it’s a smallish week of comics — 84 line items? We get that much in just comics alone some times! — but there’s a few beauties in there; especially the STARSTRUCK TP if you’ve been waiting all of these years for the series to complete, AND be affordable, or the first PROPHET TP. Check more behind the jump!

  1. INVINCIBLE #94
Great book steamrolling towards #100. The second Kirkman title to do so. A model of consistency and excellence in “our troubled times.” Ryan Ottley and Cory Walker (original penciller) have been working on this book for years and are splitting the issues leading up to 100. If Kirkman’s such an unbearable liar and fraudster you’d never know it from these artistic partnerships. I know my points were “overruled” or ignored in the other thread because he’s ABHAY and I’m j_smitty but I stand by every word.

ROCKETEER CARGO OF DOOM #1 (OF 4)
Waid + Samne. What’s not to love? I’ve seen these two going to bat for the project on Twitter and really seeming to have enjoyed the collab. That merits a buy.

    INVISIBLES OMNIBUS HC
I bought the first two trades and stopped because I knew that someday – this moment would come.

JACK KIRBY’S FOURTH WORLD OMNIBUS TP VOL 03
Get it and get it and get it.

An expensive but small week. Happy reading everyone.

  2. I got your back, J_Smitty! But until you get that cage match scheduled I will be reading:

ALL STAR WESTERN #12 – I thought last issue was the best yet.

AMERICA’S GOT POWERS #3 – last issue lost some of the momentum of the first, but had enough of a hook to keep me coming back.

BEFORE WATCHMEN DR MANHATTAN #1 – smurftastic!

COBRA ONGOING #16 – Love it. For those who missed me waxing on in previous months, I’ll just say it has intriguingly complex stories and awesome art by Antonio Fuso, making it a must buy. I totally can’t believe I’m reading a GI Joe book.

I VAMPIRE #12 – On the other hand, I can see an end of the road for this. ON PROBATION despite the gorgeous, delicate, moody art.

JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK #12 – I somehow missed issue #11 and have not suffered for it. My inner fanboy wants to see the promised clash between the Houses of Secrets and Mystery, but after that this book is on what is likely a very short PROBATION.

KEVIN SMITH BIONIC MAN #12 – many moons ago, one of the first ‘coming attractions’ I did was for Bionic Man #1. And I griped about the lack of BIONIC BIGFOOT. Well golly mister, even though the preview shows Col Steve Austin fighting right-wing survivalist whack-a-doos (and with some pretty horrifying art, at that), there is a beautiful Alex goddam Ross cover showing Bionic Bigfoot. MUST BUY. Please don’t break my heart.

MARS ATTACKS #3 – these have been fun, but hardly ‘must read’, and at $4, that probably means this is on double secret PROBATION.

MIND MGMT #4 – have fallen behind on reading these, and must catch up.

PLANETOID #3 – First issue showed a very promising start. The second issue seemed to head right to Hollywood formula sci-fi tropes. That was a disapointment, and this issue may be the decider. What’s noteworthy is that I would probably have been less judgemental last year and just let this slide, but that was before Glory, Prophet and Saga raised my expectations for what I want out of my funnybooks.

PUNISHER #14 – have read the last few, and really like what I’m getting. Despite TOTALLY not being a Punisher fan. Great story, great characters, great art..so of course Rucka is getting pulled and the book is being given a Bold New Direction(tm). As an aside, Marvel’s ‘self-cover’ books feel really insubstantial, and I wonder how that is affecting sales.

ROCKETEER CARGO OF DOOM #1 – yep, I totally expect this to be weapons-grade awesome.

    Books and stuff:

JACK KIRBY’S FOURTH WORLD OMNIBUS TP VOL 03 – don’t ask, just buy it!

PROPHET TP VOL 01 REMISSION – see my concerns about Planetoid above? This book here…..? It does NONE of those things. And I read the hell out of it each month.

COMICS! It’s what people do between lawsuits!

  3. @J_Smitty: Hey, I read your comments and thought about ’em just like everybody else’s comments! I wouldn’t feel slighted any if I were you. I think things just wound down and petered out. Also, I did not know Samnee was doing that ROCKETEER book, Cheers!

@Corey (Ottawa): If KEVIN SMITH BIONIC MAN was actually about Kevin Smith but – as a bionic man, and he was fighting SASQUATCH! in the REVOLVING TUNNEL! I would buy that book. If it tore off his bionic arms and beat him to death with them I would buy two copies!

Nobody is buying STARSTRUCK? STARSTRUCK is the best! Brian “Would I lie to you, baby? Would I lie to you?” Hibbs says so. STARSTRUCK – it is good!

    STARSTRUCK is COMICS!!!!

  4. @JohnK (UK): some bad news effendi…

The following letter has been sent by Diamond UK to British comic retailers:

“Retailers will be aware that the first issue of Howard Chaykin’s Black Kiss II was rather explicit compared to other comics distributed by Diamond UK. We at Diamond have now had the opportunity to review the second issue and the explicitness has not diminished at all! In fact there are scenes depicted which may fall foul of UK Customs’ regulations on the importing of indecent and obscene material. Consequently Diamond has taken the decision not to distribute any further issues of Black Kiss II in the UK.

Had Diamond UK continued to import this title and encountered problems with Customs, it could have had a knock-on effect on the timely distribution of all titles in the UK. A situation wanted by no one.

All orders for Black Kiss II #2 along with Black Kiss II #1, have been cancelled by Diamond UK. Black Kiss II #1 will be made returnable at a later date. Please look out for details in Discussions.”

  5. @Corey (Ottawa):

Cheers, sir. That’s just ****ing great, that is. For ****’s sake. It’s just ****ing lines on paper!

Hey Diamond, why don’t you just put all the ****ing copies of BLACK KISS 2 in a separate ****ing box and then Customs can **** about with them to their ****ing heart’s content. I know it sounds ****ing crazy but hear me out: separate boxes. See, all that vital stuff like NEW ****ing AVENGERS gets to people and I get my BLACK KISS 2.

Okay, I get it a bit late but at least I ****ing get it. Look HM Customs, it’s 2012 A.D. and kids can’t afford comics anymore, so the chance of some kid seeing it and magically turning into a stinking degenerate not fit to eat with the servants is pretty small, verging on the highly ****ing unlikely you know? As risks go, it’s certainly one I’m willing to ****ing take.

And what about Howard Victor ****ing Chaykin? Are you going to deprive him of his lucrative U.K. stream of income? He’s got that money earmarked for ****ing Mai-Tais. I hope you can look him in his big sad ****ing face, Diamond, when you tell him he’s going to have to go back to selling his ****ing teeth on E-Bay. No dignity for you, Howard Victor ****ing Chaykin, not if we want ****ing NEW ****ing AVENGERS to get ****ing through!

A separate ****ing box. It just takes a moment’s ****ing thought.

Hello everyone in 2012 from all of us in the ****ing 19th Century! It’s ****ing tip-top here in the past and no ****ing mistake!

    Thanks, Corey (Ottawa)!

  6. That…was…awesome.

I hadn’t read that comment thread before because I don’t enjoy podcasts of any sort and don’t read comment threads about them, but I did go read it after reading your comments here. I thought you did a great job representing your opinions and while I don’t share your opinions, I definitely feel like you gave me stuff to think over. So, well done, sir!

Also, Abhay’s not always right. I don’t think Abhay thinks he’s always right, either. So, we shouldn’t assume just because he was speaking he’s right, you know? It’s a huge world and all opinions are welcome! ^_^
