  1. I really thought Marvel would have Ultimate Spider-Man #1 or at least Ultimate Avengers #1 in shops this week to provide a small bit of, as you said, counter-programming. Looks like it’s DC’s week to win or lose.

  2. What an odd week this will be. I am surpised that there isn’t just…more. More DC (the dropping of Vertigo is TRULY strange). More from the others, knowing that lots of eyes will be in an LCS (maybe), with cash in hand. Sure, there may be some speculating on JL, but if a buyer used to five or ten books, they’ll be walking out with far less than that this week.

This will be interesting. My order looks like this:

ANGEL & FAITH #1 (BtVS: Season8 never really resonated with me. Dawn’s a giant? wtf? But this book might scratch my itch, occassional though it might be, for those characters, without leaving me lost)

PLANET OF THE APES #5 (a really nice looking book. If I have one criticism, its that the story telling is very direct and focused. Hopefully as the issue count rises, we can get some B and C plots, and get off the narrative monorail. Still, nicely done and deserving of wider readership)

ROCKETEER ADVENTURES #4 (I am just loving the hell out of these. I guess I’m nostalgic for nostalgia)

WARLORD OF MARS FALL OF BARSOOM #2 (a nice intro issue, which had me wanting to learn more. I did manage to get the GORGEOUS Francavillo cover last time out, and will hunt again)

STEVE DITKO OMNIBUS HC VOL 01 STARRING SHADE (I have a birthday coming the week after next, so might try and see if this arrives from the Meta-Zone. But this book will be mine!)

so…will I go Nu? Truth be told I backed out of pre-ordering JL after the preview book dropped. Those pages, obviously meant to wow, left me cold. Totally detached. And more than a bit scared for the viability of the whole 52 in a way I hadn’t been before.

The solicits for Nu month two (Tu?) have given me further pause about books I thought might be fresh and worth a check(Aquaman, Savage Hawkman and – sad to say – Batgirl come readily to mind).

And then (judging by the Diamond code) FLASHPOINT slips and ships late, ALMOST missing its hand-off window for the entire thing?! That does not leave me with a feeling that grown-ups are in charge.

But I will probably have $6 burning a hole in my pocket so FLASHPOINT and JUSTICE LEAGUE will probably both come home with me. This is my hobby, and I owe it the chance to prove itself.

  3. I’m snagging the two DC titles, pleased that Ellis is back in comics (and bringing McKelvie with him) on SECRET AVENGERS. Might grab that DREDD trade, too.

  4. Corey:

FLASHPOINT is IN NO WAY late — it has ALWAYS been the plan (since nu52, at least) that it would ship on 8/31. You can go backwards from all the FP minis, if that helps — four a week, every week, for 12 weeks, right?

  5. Both DCs for me, too.

But SECRET AVENGERS is a must have, as anything Ellis is generally a must have.

Besides that, VERONICA with Kevin Keller looks good too.

  6. @Corey

Not only is FLASHPOINT on time (the JUN code is accurate JUSTICE LEAGUE’s JUL code is because it was retrosolicited for August) but it’s the 2nd FLASHPOINT issue in August, which was ALWAYS the plan.

There’s nothing showing so far that DC is *not* in control.

I have no doubt that there should be some… hiccups but I’m ready to be pleasantly surprised.

  7. ROCKETEER ADVENTURES #4 (OF 4)
    INVINCIBLE #82
    SECRET AVENGERS #16

I don’t need the Ditko Omni ‘cos I already own the run of Shade – ha!

  8. Why is this such a small month?
Wouldn’t this be a good week for other publishers to have launched some books?
Or do they think it’s a better idea to try flooding the market next week?
Either way, I’m getting a lot less comics than usual, and there’s nothing new and interesting shipping to try out!

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #668 – This book has been AWESOME since Big Time.
    BUTCHER BAKER RIGHTEOUS MAKER #6
FLASHPOINT #5 (OF 5) – Cornell pulled a heart string in the last issue of Action Comics… will the last issue of FP have the same effect?
JUSTICE LEAGUE #1 – It will be hard to resist flipping through this in the shop and inadvertently spoiling it. Will Johns end on a splash page of a unified team, or give us a patented ‘Geoff Johns last page WTF moment’?
    SKULLKICKERS #10
SPIDER-ISLAND DEADLY HANDS OF KUNG FU #1 (OF 3) SPI – This could be good. The Spider-Island tie ins have been a mixed bag. The villains one-shot was awesome, Cloak & Dagger a good book but lousy tie-in, and Spider-Girl was pretty weak.

STEVE DITKO OMNIBUS HC VOL 01 STARRING SHADE
I saw a Hitman trade solicited for this week, which I would have liked to get. Bit mean of DC not to go through with it.

  9. SECRET AVENGERS #16 – I’ll take this if it’s Ellis.
This can be my ‘There’s bugger all DC so try something different’ book.

  10. Nothing.

I can’t remember the last time this has happened. Or if it has ever happened in over 25 years of having a pull list.

Good week to attack the unread pile. (There’s always an unread pile.)

  11. RED SONJA #57
    SKULLKICKERS #10
WARLORD OF MARS FALL OF BARSOOM #2

  12. I’m all in for the NU52. I have 20 titles on reserve and will undoubtly pickup another half dozen off the stands to check out. My daughter is looking forward to a bunch of titles as for her this is a chance to be in on the beginning as it were. Marvel titles have always left my kids cold, so they are out.

    What I’m getting:

    FLASHPOINT #5 (OF 5)
    JUSTICE LEAGUE #1

We’ve enjoyed Flashpoint till now and I’m hoping I don’t have it spoiled for me on the drive back home. :)

    SONIC THE HEDGEHOG #228

My son loves Sonic and this is the only character he wants to read in comic form.

  13. AMAZING SPIDER-MAN (what can I say, Spider Island is waaaay more entertaining than it should be)
    PLANET OF THE APES
    UNCANNY X-FORCE
GAMBIT FROM THE MARVEL VAULT (maybe)
    ESSENTIAL WEB OF SPIDER-MAN

And yeah, JUSTICE LEAGUE #1. I also feel like I owe DC a chance.

  14. Butcher Baker, and naught else.

  15. AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #668 – Can’t get enough Spider-Man. I think I have issues, and not the comic variety!

DEADPOOLMAX #11 – Mmm, Kyle Baker
JUSTICE LEAGUE #1 – Why not, ya know?
SECRET AVENGERS #16 – HELLZ YEAH
SPIDER-ISLAND DEADLY HANDS OF KUNG FU #1 – I really want this to be good. Kung fu adventures on Spider-Island. Anthony Johnson said he has some good ideas to do with this, so lets do it.
UNCANNY X-FORCE #14 – Jerome Opena is back on, my pants are back off

  16. Lo! It BEGINS!

Does the nu look good to YOU? Do you do the do with the nu? I do. Well, okay, not this week, this week I’ll be doing the do with:

    DEADPOOLMAX #11
    (Kyle “The” Baker!)
    GOON #35
(Really dig the art so I’ll pick this up for a few months and see if a story appears as well.)
    SIXTH GUN #14
    (Still solid. Still good.)
WARLORD OF MARS FALL OF BARSOOM #2
(I want the Raquel Welch homage cover. You’re not fooling anyone, pal, you do too!)

    Books / Mags / Stuff
STEVE DITKO OMNIBUS HC VOL 01 STARRING SHADE
(Not only the wonky brain melt of SHADE but also Ditko/Wood’s STALKER, I believe? If I remember rightly on the cover of #1 the copy bellows “Beware the man with THE STOLEN SOUL–” who is “Beginning…An unholy quest for a STOLEN SOUL!” I guess a STOLEN SOUL is involved. I might have to call in some favours and get this lickety split. Sometimes I think Spider-Man was the least of Ditko’s genius. I never say it anymore though because it really, really upsets people. Golly, this book will be swell.)

No JL for me, not because I hatez DC but rather I don’t cotton to G Johns and J Lee, while an obviously talented man, just doesn’t set my blue touchpaper afire. I’ll be getting my nu on later don’t you fret about that none.

Buckle up, retailers! This is your Shining Time! Oh yes, exciting times for COMICS!

  17. Flashpoint 5
(You try my patience with the killing of Captain Thunder, Johns. You really do.)
    Invincible 82
(The closest thing to good Spider-Man being done today)
    Justice League 1
(Yes, preview pages also left me super cold. We’ll see, I guess!)
    Amazing Spider-Man 668
(Lots of recommendations here so I will venture forth. Plunge four into the Slott-o-verse. May this mission be more fruitful than the last)

  18. One more thing to remember is that tomorrow is one of those rare “5th Wednesdays” that come around. That spreads out new releases more thinly than normal.

Having said that… My DC total is STILL higher than my Marvel total for the week.

  19. Despite this being a small week, especially for DC, it’s a decent-sized week for me:
INCREDIBLE HULKS #635 – It’s been an occasional buy for me, and I like the series and Greg Pak enough to buy his conclusion

JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY #626 POINT ONE – The regular creative team are on this, right? Or at least Kieron Gillen? One of my favorites currently, so I’m in

JUSTICE LEAGUE #1 – Yes I’ll be buying this along with 2/3 or more of the purported regular comics-buying audience. F&@k, does that mean I have to get out of the house early tomorrow?

PLANET OF THE APES #5 – I’ve been meaning to take another look at this after enjoying the 1st issue, so this $1 issue is perfect timing

SECRET AVENGERS #16 – Boozy, jaded, self-proclaimed Internet visionary meets Indy ligne-claire hipster most worthy of a larger audience. A match made in heaven or a plague of disheartening shipping delays?

SIXTH GUN #14 – I was considering skipping this issue due to the fill-in artist (who may be a perfectly fine drawer and human being whose only fault is in not being Brian Hurtt), but like y’all have said, it’s a slow week

THE RINSE #1 – It’s some kind of crime comic from Boom! and it’s also a dollar, so maybe

CREEPY PRESENTS BERNIE WRIGHTSON HC – I’m sure to have some of this material already, but this will certainly tempt me, like a $20 hooker when I’m drunk. Stay strong, man, stay strong!
