  1. It’s funny; I would’ve figured this would’ve been a skip week for me hitting the store but between GODZILLA: HALF CENTURY WAR (Stokoe! Godzilla! Stokoe!! Godzilla!!) and BAKUMAN v.13, I’m going to have to figure out a way to get my ass in there.

  2. I’m looking forward to Archer & Armstrong. BWS’ run with the characters is in my top 3 runs of all time so it’s going to be very challenging to appease this reader BUT Van Lente is a writer that I actually could see coming close to hitting the mark. Plus, I was shocked that New Valiant would make this one of their core launch books when there are so many more commercial “easier” titles they could have gone with first. That really impressed me.

Brian, are the Valiant relaunch books selling for you at all? I’ve been impressed and surprised with the quality myself.

  3. LAST WEEK: For the second week running, everything I bought was pretty good, if not outright great. Hawkeye surprised by being pretty good – though not as great as a lot of reviews seem to think… Seriously, he beats the villain by having more money, what kind of a superhero/street level resolution is that? – and along with Daredevil it offered a tease into what Marvel could be. DC teased me with Dial H and Earth 2 showing what the nu52 should have been. Then I read Mind MGMT and Matt Kindt blew them all away. I’m still not sure what to make of Black Kiss 2.

BATMAN #12 – I’m hating myself for this, as although Capullo is doing great guns, Snyder’s ambition far outshone his talent on that last arc, and it ended with the biggest thud this side of series spinning out of a crossover that no one liked. That said, Capullo is doing great guns, and there’s not that much else coming out this week. Also, it was only in the last FIVE issues that the opening arc began to stink.

CONAN THE BARBARIAN #7 – Becky Cloonan! She’s leaving the title soon isn’t she? That’s a shame, but I’ll enjoy her art whilst it lasts.

DEMON KNIGHTS #12 – I think this book deserves a bit more attention than it gets. It’s good.

FRANKENSTEIN AGENT OF SHADE #12 – Matt Kindt! Two issues in and there’s been a cross dimensional floating Escher-city and a city of retired spies that’s inside a giant whale – and that’s just the settings for the stories! MATT KINDT!

GODZILLA HALF CENTURY WAR #1 (OF 5) – I’m getting this because I love Godzilla. That or JAMES STOKOE!

MASSIVE #3 – Has everyone else come around to loving this title yet?

PUNK ROCK JESUS #2 (OF 6) – I really enjoyed the first issue of this. It was rough around the edges and not perfect, but it had that great raw feeling of a good storyteller cutting loose doing a passion project. A great showcase for Murphy, and a cut above most first-time solo efforts.

BAKUMAN TP VOL 13 – I’m actually a volume behind at the moment – time to OD on Bakuman!

  4. I think this is a week of buying for the good of art and good artists as my purchases look to be Stokoe’s Godzilla, Cloonan’s Batman, Cloonan’s (or is it Harren’s this week? Conan and Murphy’s (really hard not to immediately type “Murphy Brown” there, habit I guess) Punk Rock Jesus.
I’m still undecided on Archer & Armstrong and Venom, what with the creative team fully revolved out of one and my growing disinterest in Valiant as it gets past #1.
Weirdly enough I’m not buying this new Star Wars series, I’d jump on it but I still need to read the series of ebooks it’s spinning out of, so I’ll be buying the new STAR WARS LOST TRIBE OF THE SITH OMNIBUS OF THE EBOOK COLLECTION PAPERBACK instead.

Crap. Scott Pilgrim is this week too? Here we go again..

  5. Brian

I don’t see the Neal Adams IDW portfolio listed. Are you not carrying it?

  6. ARCHER & ARMSTRONG (NEW) #1
This should be a test of my comics shop. The Valiant stuff has been jumping off the shelf. Am I right in thinking they should be able to stock extra at this point?

    BATMAN #12
Cool. New something…anything. I think I read somewhere that Capullo was going to take a few issues off. We’ll see.

    CONAN THE BARBARIAN #7
I like it. Cloonan’s back for a couple issues. Wood’s got a handle on the Howard style in this – Colorful world with horrible things that blunder into the scenery and remind you of the horror around the corner.

GODZILLA HALF CENTURY WAR #1 (OF 5)
James Stokoe and Brandon Graham are boys. He also did the Mindless Ones pod logo. He’s also a super artist. Plus, you know it’s going to be weird. Just soooo weird.

    MASSIVE #3
Alright, comic book. I’m going to be honest with you. You need to step up your game in the bedroom. You’ve had nearly 60 pages to give me something memorable and I’m left with nothing. No heat. No desire for you. Your setting is “weird post apocalypse” and the best you’ve done so far is show some shit under water. I respect you Ben Lipman but I think we’re living out The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost on this particular title.

PUNK ROCK JESUS #2 (OF 6)

    *****SPOILERs*****

As a contrast – Sean Murphy’s Issue 1 pitch – “OK, WE’RE GOING TO FINISH ON SOMEONE POISONING AND THROWING INTO THE RIVER CLONED BABY JESUS’ TWIN SISTER!” Lesson: When you’re playing the small press underdog, just f^&%ing go for it.

    SUPERBOY #12
This is the book that got Lobdell the other books. Good art. Developing character. RB Silva’s designs and style keep me coming back. F*&^ing RB Silva probably played a huge part in getting Nick Spencer a Marvel Exclusive with his stuff on that Jimmy Olsen. Thanks a lot RB, no, really.

  7. Bruce:

    That’s correct.

Given Adams’ recent sales levels, I had a hard time picturing who would pay $30 for an 8 page story, and we’re offering only as special order.

I also think, given the content, that this might not be an object to buy/sell given the recent shootings — the full story is online here: http://my.opera.com/billinbeijing/blog/neal-adams-thrill-kill-story-for-warren-magazines-in-progress

“This should be a test of my comics shop. The Valiant stuff has been jumping off the shelf. Am I right in thinking they should be able to stock extra at this point? ”

Meh, maybe not. For most stores the original A&A was the least commercial of the original Valiant books, and (to also answer Luke H’s q), for me at least, the V books have been diminishing for us — I have yet to sell out of any V book, and our actual sales on the #1’s have been:

    X-O #1 = 12 sold
    Harbinger #1 = 5 sold
    Bloodshot #1 = 2 sold

Maybe more worrying, again here in this individual store, is these are purely 1st week books — with the sole exception of X-O #1, we’ve not sold ANY copies of ANY of the six releases to date (again, all IN STOCK) past the first weekend on sale. X-O has a single subscriber, the other three have zero.

Unless something changes, I predict I will be forced to make these subs-only (thus: “we don’t carry them”) before the end of the year.

(Having said all that, we ordered more copies of A&A #1 than BS or H, because we were one of the few stores Back Then, where A&A was our #1 V book)
