  1. NEW LOVE & ROCKETS!!!

I don’t even care about anything else. That’s all I need!

  2. LAST WEEK(S): Had a few weeks of adventures around Europe. Mostly in UK (girlfriends friends and family), with a few days in Amsterdam (Van Gogh museum, amongst other cultural delights… including wandering red-eyed into Europe’s oldest comic shop Lambiek, which was unexpected, and a little bit like heaven) and a week on a beach in Spain.
Graphic Novels I read on the trip: Grendal omnibus, Bakuman 11 & 12, Batman Earth One, Get Jiro!, La Pacifica, The Complete Bad Company, Nikolai Dante: Too Cool To Kill, Absalom: Ghosts Of London, Isle Of 100,000 Graves, Like A Velvet Glove Cast In Iron, and Dan Boring.
Dan Boring was the winner, to the point that when I finished it, I stood up and announced “Now that’s fucking art”, which led to my girlfriend reading, and loving, her first comic. My girlfriend has since read ‘Get Jiro’ which she thought was fun, a fair appraisal of the book.

    THIS WEEK:
BATMAN #0: I’m with Liefeld – no one buys this for Snyder and Capullo, they buy it for Capullo. Snyder just gets in the way with his endless words and talking.

CONAN THE BARBARIAN #8 – Cloonan! Unlike when she was on Batman (with Snyder) she’s actually allowed to draw the title character!

CREEP #1 – I tried the #0 and loved it. Can’t wait. Typical Dark Horse book, wherein it surpasses anything else most other companies working in genre comics are doing, to the point you aren’t quite sure how/why those other companies are still around.

    DEMON KNIGHTS #0

FRANKENSTEIN AGENT OF SHADE #0 – The last issue of this book I will get for awhile as it’s tying into Lemire/Snyder’s Rot storyline, which is a load of rot that’s already had me drop two titles, and I couldn’t be less interested in.
It wouldn’t be so bad, but all three books have great artists, and Lemire and Snyder are wasting them on endless boring shite.

HAUNT #26 – It doesn’t make much sense, but with Nathan Fox, it doesn’t need to.

INCREDIBLE HULK #13 – I dropped this awhile back, but facing almost a whole day on a plane, I decided to catch up. It’s priced high, but Aaron is filling each issue with crazy. Stay Angry was a great arc. Aaron’s style on this book is best described as Warren Ellis meets Bob Haney.

MANHATTAN PROJECTS #6 – Hickman hacks it out at Marvel so that this book can exist. Totally worth it.

    MASSIVE #4 – That’s right J_Smitty, I’m going back for more!

PUNK ROCK JESUS #3 (OF 6) – Fucking bonkers. Fucking Excellent.

ROCKETEER CARGO OF DOOM #2 (OF 4) – Yes.

SAUCER COUNTRY #7 – Have the haters come around on this yet? Not the actual haters, but everyone who was reading it ‘despite it’s mediocrity’?

X-TREME X-MEN #3 – I need to get #2 as well. I enjoyed #1, but was the only person in the world to do so. I’m curious whether this will be like Avengers Assemble, which I also enjoyed alone, but a few issues in realised I was wrong, or like Near Death, which just got canceled, and I’m left hating all the bastards who didn’t buy it (didn’t even show up on Hibbs’ Arriving lists!).

  3. Welcome home, Mr. Lipman! Sounds like an excellent time was had.

    LAST WEEK!

ARCHER & ARMSTRONG (NEW) #2 – Irreverent and enjoyable. What’s anybody done with Herc and Cho recently? Anybody?

BLACK KISS II #2 (OF 6) – Unavailable…digital here we come?

BLOODSHOT (ONGOING) #3 – Yes, glad I decided to come back. I’m enjoying the cobbled together freak show that’s chasing Bloodshot. I actually care a little bit one way or the other about this hunting party.

    DIAL H #0 – Nope…gave it a flip.

    EARTH 2 #0 – Sold out.

WORLDS FINEST #0 – Oh yes, the FULL Kevin Maguire. My kingdom (such as it is) for a new issue of STRIKEBACK!

ACTION COMICS #0 – Oh no. This was doubleplusungood.

Prince of Cats – Not avail. My guy seemed to think he was shorted or it hadn’t shipped. I’ll keep an eye out.

    OPIUM DEN!

STAR WARS #4 – Howard Victor Chaykin not looking particularly Howard Victor Chaykinesque (Damn likenesses) Pretty cramped panels for him.

AQUAMAN #62 – Mera gets over the death of her child and reconciles with Aquaman in a single issue. 1978 everybody!

THE SCORE – BOOK 1 (Piranha Press) – So, yeah, this wasn’t what I thought it was.

STARSTRUCK: THE EXPANDING UNIVERSE V1B1 – This is really, really gorgeous. Only given it a flip so far but for a buck it’s been worth it already. The page layout is short by about 2 inches so it could be printed to rack as a standard size book. Maybe to preserve the original format?

SUPER POWERS (84) #5 (85) #3 (86) #3 AND #4 – KIRBY!! After having the shit kicked out of him for a full page by Darkseid an underling offers up the communications device with a “–Ready, Sire?–” Darkseid spits back, “You can bet your bloodied carcass, I’m ready! NOW, TREMBLE, EARTH! — AND FEEL MY BOOT!!” As the years go on the series descends into full on toy wanking so catch the early greatness and skip the re-designed Orion costume Kupperberg years.

STRONTIUM DOG (EAGLE COMICS FOUR ISSUE MUTIE SERIES) The Ezquerra art alone is worth the dollar but look at all the cool mutant names Alan Grant came up with! Johnny Alpha, Duckbill Higgs, General Armz, Cuss Weerd, General Torso, Ghetto Joe No Knees, Evans The Fist, Clacton Fuzz, Middenface McNulty, Studs Boyce, I could go on.

STRIKEFORCE MORITURI #1 On the advice of the podcast. I really liked this as a number 1.

    THIS WEEK!

    BATMAN #0
    CONAN THE BARBARIAN #8
    HARBINGER (ONGOING) #4
PUNK ROCK JESUS #3 (OF 6)
ROCKETEER CARGO OF DOOM #2 (OF 4)
    SAUCER COUNTRY #7
    SHADE #12 (OF 12)
    SUPERBOY #0
    X-O MANOWAR (ONGOING) #5

  4. BATGIRL #0–Gail Simone does straightforward but well-crafted superhero comics. She seems to care in a way a lot of other writers don’t.

CONAN THE BARBARIAN #8–Becky Cloonan is killing it on the art.

FANTASTIC FOUR #610–Treading water. Only following it to see how it finishes before the new #1s.

FRANKENSTEIN AGENT OF SHADE #0–Lot of interesting ideas every issue. Hopefully the cross-over won’t kill the momentum.

HOAX HUNTERS #3–Make or break. The first issue was awful in execution, but I really liked the premise. The second issue was better, though still not great. Hopefully they’ve found their footing by this issue, but if not I’m dropping it.

SAUCER COUNTRY #7–This one really gets under the skin.

  5. Welcome back Ben! Exploring foreign comic shops is always fun, innit?! I once turned right instead of the intended left and found the only comic shop in Reykjavik using (the Mrs alleges) nerd radar. Or midichloriabns, i forget. Hope you’re rested and ready, as it is time for COMICS!

    LAST WEEK:

ACTION COMICS #0 – nope, not for me thanks. Not bought and not missed. J_Smitty_ tells me I saved $4!

BEFORE WATCHMEN SILK SPECTRE #3 – Amanda Connor really shined in this, despite the evil menacing ding-ding. I’ve commented on “teh nekkid” before across all the BW books….it all seems so very *forced*. Were the creators TOLD to go this route to be ‘edgy’? If so, that’s just sad. And immature. Is there some kind of “Intended for Immature Readers” sticker DC can use to warn me as a parent?

BLACK KISS II #2 – Speaking of ding-dings…HRH the Queen doesn’t think I should read this, and where has she ever led me wrong before? So I sent $5 to the CBLDF instead.

GI COMBAT #0 – the Unknown Soldier piece, despite a REALLY hokey premise, actually worked for me. The back-up, jeez… I’ve loved Dinosaurs vs Soldiers since I first saw it in a DC 80 pg giant back in Grade 3. THIS book is making me hate the concept, even. Innocence lost, man….So I guess this averages somewhere between OKAY and EH, with a ‘see ya later” and better hopes for the Haunted Tank next month.

PETER CANNON THUNDERBOLT #1 – the Jae Lee cover MAKES it feel very Ozymandius, and then, wait-what!? they actually STEAL the gig where he engineers/conjures/magics-up some mythical beast to unite the world? Fine art, I have faith in Darnall who I met at an SPX way back, but golly mister…this looks like it is heading towards AWFUL (although that could certainly change). Nice of DC to free the rights for their unused Secret Origin piece though. Quite classy, actually, and it makes for a solid overall package.

PHANTOM STRANGER #0 – This was CRAP. Like “ask for your money back” bad. And while some other sites love to hate on Dan D, that just makes me sad, actually.

PLANET O/T APES CATACLYSM #1 – A bit too wordy, but overall pretty GOOD. I do miss Gabriel Hardman and his great moody use of blacks, though.

PUNISHER #15 – VERY GOOD with a great shocker, which I had to read twice to be sure I had got it right. I will miss this book.

THE LONE RANGER #9 – Art was muddled, in that I really could not tell who was the ‘bad and needs killing’ soldier and the “shell-shocked needs saving” soldier. And because of that, all emotional impact of this went out the window. Making what could have been a mild OKAY actually seem quite AWFUL.

THIEF OF THIEVES #8 – Last time I said I was skeptical whether the core idea had enough there to sustain itself, and the answer is “no.” Martinborough’s art seemed a bit off, and saying “we need a heist because the crew is bored” is pretty lazy. This was EH and heading to DROPSVILLE.

DIAL H #0, EARTH 2 #0, HAWKEYE #2, MIND THE GAP #4, THINK TANK #2 – bought but not yet read

    FROM THE DOLLAR BIN:

Beware the Creeper (Vertigo) #1-5: Holy hell, guys! Some great Cliff Chiang art, and it’s set in 1920s Paris!

Ripley’s Believe It or Not! (Dark Horse) #1-3: Superb Cary Nord art, good selections and interweaving of the anecdotes and a non-intrusive use of footnotes! Fun AND educational!

’68: okay, its zombies (not dinos) against soldiers, but I can live with that.

DARK HORSE COMICS #4: The spectacular pulp majesty of Gary Gianni drawing Indiana Jones?? How did I miss this! (and does anyone have a spare copy of Gianni’s 20,000 leagues book?)

    THIS WEEK!

AMERICAN VAMPIRE LORD OF NIGHTMARES #4 – have fallen behind, so will need to catch up.

BATMAN #0 – I am a sucker for these “Bruce becomes Batman” stories. Although Batman sells itself, I hear. #creatorsdontmatter

BEFORE WATCHMEN COMEDIAN #3 – the best part of the movie has continued on to be the best part of the BW books, even if he’s a bit weak in his own book.

BIONIC WOMAN #4 – building towards the Fembots. Although I am still mad about the heartbreaking pile of CRAP that Bionic Bigfoot was over in the Steve Austin book.

CAPTAIN AMERICA AND BLACK WIDOW #636 – the title is clearly treading water until getting scrapped and rebuilt, so they have handed the reigns to random creators and they are having FUN. So am I.

CONAN THE BARBARIAN #8 – Cloonan!

HOAX HUNTERS #3 – Thelonious_Nick and I agree: GREAT concept, “but…..” I had liked the first issue, as its sort of felt like falling asleep with the TV still running on A&E and mixing three or four shows up in some really strange dream. Sometimes, however, you have to turn off the TV, roll over and go to sleep. ON NOTICE

MANHATTAN PROJECTS #6 – THIS BOOK has never disappointed. World Weary Ben Lipman is willing to put up with lots of NOW! MARVEL! NOW! crap existing, and so am I, if it lets Hickman ddo this forever.

MASSIVE #4 – Had high hopes of weighing in between J_Smitty_ and Ben Lipman, but still somehow pick these up and then never quite get around to reading them. When that started happening on DMZ , my dropping the book wasn’t far behind. I *WILL* get to reading these this month, and LO THERE SHALL COME A RECKONING! I will put myself ON NOTICE!

ROCKETEER CARGO OF DOOM #2 – Raptors… they should all be destroyed! But awesome work from HARVEY AWARD WINNER Mark Waid (cheers, sir!). Graeme was right that capturing the era is more than just drawing zeppelins and fedoras. A great return to the character.

SAUCER COUNTRY #7 – I was felling this all trending slightly EH with punctuated moments of brilliance, but have to tell you the cover from #9 looks *SO* awesome, I will stick around until then.

STUMPTOWN V2 #1 – More Rucka makes me happy.

WINTER SOLDIER #10 – This arc has stalled as of last issue, but that was probably about the time the creators were being told that the deal was off, and the book was getting yanked. So I will cut them some slack.

And my BOOK OF THE WEEK, even if it isn’t on the CE shipping list:

ALIEN ILLUSTRATED STORY TP – I remember furtively sneaking reads of this in my kids-only dentist’s office when I was like, I dunno , seven years old (why the HELL did any adult leave that for kids to read??! probably as it was ‘like Star Wars and the kids love THAT!”). Everything I’ve seen of it since, and esp JohnK(UK)’s review here, just fills me with awe and respect. So now that I get MY OWN copy for like, twelve bucks? Just a big THANKS to the comic marketplace (and Titan, in particular, I believe)

COMICS! No matter where you go, there they are!

A long one this time, so thanks for putting up with it (assuming you did). In looking at the new icv2 chart, I see that a great number of those books I truly look forward to and enjoy are firmly in the #200-#300 range, at 5k-10k with most hovering around 6 or so(Hellblazer, Prophet, Cobra, New Deadwardians and others.) So – and I say this not actually wanting it to be true – I think market forces might be trimming my reading list substantially in the all too near future. I do hope not, though, as we need some diversity. Although even just typing that made me think: MARVEL and DC: TOO BIG TO FAIL?

    Maybe on the next podcast.

  6. Wow! I really killed that thread! I’ll keep is shorter next time.
