Arriving 9/21/11

Pretty big week — not at all reduced by the fact that we’ve also received HABIBI direct from Random House (We’ve got a Craig Thompson signing on 9/28, remember?), that will be on sale on TUESDAY.

(This is a good place to remind you that this list only lists stuff we’re receiving from Diamond — direct buys like HABIBI or stuff from other wholesalers like Baker & Taylor don’t appear here.. mostly because I don’t have an easy way to cut and paste from any other source)

(There are a RAPIDLY INCREASING amount of books I’m not buying from Diamond, and one day I really need to figure out a solution to that problem, because it’s now like 8-10 books a week…. sometimes pretty big ones!)

  1. Great Rao! What a week!

AVENGERS CHILDRENS CRUSADE #7 (Benidis Free Avengers! No small little heads! No sonnets to Spider Woman’s hair! Just heroes being heroic, without the lectures. Or the dialogue: What, the dialogue’s a problem? – Not a problem. Just notable. – Notable? – Notable. Is that a problem? –No. No no no. Notable is good. – No it isn’t ‘good’ it’s just notable. – Well, it has won awards. – Hunh. Awards. – Yes, awards. It has won awards. Have YOU won awards? – Well, no. – So, no awards for you. –No. – No…. Just sayin’. – Yeah, I know. – I know you know. – Just sayin’.)

DAREDEVIL #4 (back to back weeks; this might be Hell’s Kitchen, but we are truly blessed. Sorry, I used my good zinger last week, and haven’t had time to think of a new one)

    DMZ #69 (I heart NY)

HELLBLAZER #283 (This Man This Raincoat! I am totally chuffed about this storyline, for a book that is always at the top of the heap of skulls for me)

HEROES FOR HIRE #12 (think I ordered this out of ‘Super Villain Team Up’ nostalgia for the Shroud, and out of a sense that Elektra might actually be two dimensional. Nostalgia, you foul betrayer!)

KEVIN SMITH BIONIC MAN #2 (issue two, and still no sign of THE ICE CAVERN WHERE COLONEL STEVE AUSTIN FOUGHT BIGFOOT! Of course, he hasn’t even got his bionic parts yet. Damn you decompressed story-telling! Still, this rated a solid VERY GOOD and made me think that Geoff Johns’ Hal Jordan is really just a civilian Steve Rogers)

    NORTHLANDERS #44 (Vikings!)

PLANET OF THE APES #6 (Damn Dirty Apes!)

STAR TREK ONGOING #1 (Please don’t screw up. Please don’t screw up)

TINY TITANS #44 (Aw yeah, DOOM PATROL! DOOM PATROL!!)

WONDER WOMAN #1 (Cliff. Chiang. Nuff said)

BACK ISSUE #51 (Special STEVE ENGELHART BRONZE AGE issue. Are you listening, Mr Jeff Lester? Available on the iPad so you can read AND waffle.)

And for my Nu52 pick-ups: probably Legion and Supergirl. Both or either could win me over if well executed.

  2. BATMAN #1
    BIRDS OF PREY #1
    BLUE BEETLE #1
    CAPTAIN ATOM #1
    CATWOMAN #1
DAREDEVIL #4 – MARCOS! MARCOS MARTIN! (I feel everyone should sing out his name to the tune of American Dad’s ‘Stelio Kontos theme’ for a few minutes before opening one of his books)
    DC UNIVERSE PRESENTS #1
    GREEN LANTERN CORPS #1
    LEGION OF SUPER HEROES #1
    NIGHTWING #1
RED HOOD AND THE OUTLAWS #1
    RED WING #3 (OF 4)
SPIDER-ISLAND CLOAK AND DAGGER #2 (OF 3) SPI – The only tie-in mini of SI that I’ll see a second issue of. That said, the first one was good, but not as a tie-in. Honestly, the book actually massively under-cut the threat of Spider Island by having Dagger get bored in the big battle and decide to go to uni instead – she was so certain the Avengers could deal with the threat, and there being classes still on, really undercut what was happening in the same battle in ASM.
    SPIDER-ISLAND SPIDER-WOMAN #1 SPI
    SUPERGIRL #1
WITCH DOCTOR #3 (OF 4) – WITCH DOCTOR! It’s Doctor Who meets Hellblazer!
    WONDER WOMAN #1
    X-MEN SCHISM #4 (OF 5)

I’ve decided to admit to myself that I’m all in on the nu-52 with their first issues.
I’m actually thinking this week will be better than last week’s lot – at the very least, there will be more variety.
(Deathstroke, Grifter, Suicide Squad and Red Lanterns all felt like the same book. Resurrection Man was close, but something about it has me interested in seeing another issue).

  3. Smallest week for me in ages, just Captain America, Invincible Iron Man, and the Kupperman Mark Twain book if my store carries it. None of this week’s batch of DC books appeals to me.

Oddly, my shop had the Art of Joe Kubert book last week. The clerk told me they had been shipped it by mistake (they hadn’t ordered it), and they had it marked 70% off. The book is pretty great, with a condensed version of Kubert’s biography focusing on his artistic development, a great selection of oversized art samples, and a section of pre-code romance, horror and adventure stories.

  4. I’ll be reading a lot of DC this week, but Red Hood & the Outlaws is the book I have been looking forward to the most out of all the New 52.

    BATMAN #1
    CAPTAIN ATOM #1
    DARK HORSE PRESENTS #4
    GREEN LANTERN CORPS #1
    NIGHTWING #1
RED HOOD AND THE OUTLAWS #1

SONIC UNIVERSE #32 – For my son

My daughter scores BIG with 4 girl comics this week. Also Starfire is her favorite character, so Red Hood & the Outlaws will also get a read through from her.

    BIRDS OF PREY #1
    CATWOMAN #1
    SUPERGIRL #1
    WONDER WOMAN #1

  5. BPRD HELL ON EARTH RUSSIA #1
    LEGION OF SUPER HEROES #1
    UNCANNY X-MEN #543 FEAR
    WITCH DOCTOR #3 (OF 4)
    X-FACTOR #225

    Books / Mags / Stuff
HELLBOY TP VOL 11 BRIDE OF HELL & OTHERS
    MORNING GLORIES TP VOL 02
NEW MUTANTS TP VOL 03 FALL OF NEW MUTANTS

  6. BATMAN #1 (Alright Capullo, you’ve been stuck doing Spawn circles for roughly…your entire career. Show me the goods!)

BPRD HELL ON EARTH RUSSIA #1 (I will be truly disappointed if Hellboy does not make a Yakov Smirnov joke)

CAPTAIN ATOM #1 (There was something about the character’s appearance in Project Superman that caught my eye. Also I’ve had a soft spot for him since he obliterated the world in some Armageddon 2001 tie-in after finding his grand kids murdered in a garbage dump. Potent stuff.)

DAREDEVIL #4 (Like I said, Martin has some pretty amazing shoes to fill here. If this series goes 20 something issues with Martin and Rivera alternating arcs I will be one happy dude. Side note: I nearly destroyed my laptop when I saw Greg McElhatton’s review of DD #3 on CBR. Graded out 3.5 stars. You’ve gotta be kidding me, man. Detective #1 gets 4 stars. Mighty Thor #5 gets 3.5? These are as good or better than DD? Maybe we’re just of different opinions and I should leave it alone. Jesus. Aside from Savage which has evolved somewhat from being a day to day review site who is the “paper of record” for comics reviews?)

KEVIN SMITH BIONIC MAN #2 (Echo damnation for decompression. Give him the bionics already, jeez. It’s such a boutique title you’d think anyone buying it would want to go directly to the snow cave and the yeti. This series would have gotten my ringing endorsement by opening on that fight.)

LEGION OF SUPER HEROES #1 (Gimme some a that future time weepy, Levitz)

STAR TREK ONGOING #1 (Hugely endeared to the idea of this. Have not bought a Star Trek comic since the late 80’s and have no idea what this is about. Yay, surprises!)

UNCANNY X-MEN #543 FEAR (Gillen continues a hot streak, for me at least. My eyes have evolved a shark like second lid to automatically protect me from the more objectionable Greg Land O-Faces. So, yay mutation!)

    WONDER WOMAN #1
I think Wonder Woman monster hunter has potential. Writers struggle so mightily with the idea of an ass-kicking ambassador of peace who is involved quite heavily with all sorts of sexual politics that I’m not surprised few can handle the juggling act. Couple that with S&M thing and the fact that the outfit is like a patriotic wet dream for some and yikes that’s a laundry list of challenges before you even put pen to paper.

I’d honestly like to see them go away from all that and have Wonder Woman deal with secret threats to humanity with a BPRD style team of assistants. Throw in the occasional flashback to Darwyn Cooke’s WW in various times throughout history and you’ve got me for as long as you want me.

    As ever, we shall see!

  7. Looking forward to the new Chew collection, and The Guild: Clara one-shot.

  8. Captain America #3
I guess I’ll stick with this through the first story arc and then probably drop it. The book looks pretty, it’s written competently enough, and I like Cap. Why aren’t I more excited about this book?

    Daredevil #4
As soon as I decide I like a comic, they change the creative team on me. This time, however, folks are heaping enough praise on the new artist that I remain optimistic.

No must-haves from nu-DC, but that was true last week and I ended up buying and liking Frankenstein. Looks like I should pick up Demon Knights from last week as well. I’ll flip through everything this week and see what sticks – maybe Batman for my son, Supergirl for my daughter, and maybe Legion if it has the flavor of sci-fi goodness I enjoy.

  9. If J_Smitty hadn’t reminded me, my LCS would have:

    I was also down for:

BATMAN #1: It’s Snyder folks; there was a lot of love for pre-reboot TEC, why is he being left hanging….

BPRD HELL ON EARTH RUSSIA #1 I said last week I was a sucker for faux vintage pulp covers; I am even weaker in the face of faux vintage Soviet propoganda covers. Plus, I liked BPRD 1945 and 1946. But to be clear, hate them Commies!
