  1. LAST WEEK on Arriving…
DAREDEVIL #18 – The whole “Matt’s Crazy!” plotline had a very predictable end-of-issue reveal, but this is still finely crafted superhero stuff from Waid and Samnee (still have to check out their Rocketeer)

FABLES #121 – The end of a very dark story arc. 10 years in, this series still has the ability to surprise

GODZILLA HALF CENTURY WAR #2 (OF 5) – If not the home run the 1st issue was, still awesome & the 2nd best Godzila comic I’ve read. Great monster fight, plus, Godzilla in ‘Nam, man

HELLBLAZER #295 – Perfectly fine, but in contrast to Fables, this is getting a bit staid. Curious how much life this title has past #300, considering how many guest appearances Constantine does in the NĂ¼ 52

SWORD OF SORCERY #0 – Never having read the original Amethyst comic, I liked this; the art and colors were lovely, & the darker Beowulf backup provided a nice contrast

    THIS WEEK!
HAPPY #1 (OF 4) – Hasn’t come out yet, & I’ve already seen mixed reviews of it. So I guess this is a big deal

NEW DEADWARDIANS #7 (OF 8) – I wish this were selling better, because I’m sad it’s almost over & would be happy to see a sequel

PROPHET #29 – I’m a little cooler on this than most, but Farel Dalrymple is excuse enough to check this out again

SIXTH GUN #25 – Still digging it

  2. Last Week…

GODZILLA HALF CENTURY WAR #2 (OF 5)
Here is how James Stokoe holds his drawing implement.

    http://www.tcj.com/brandon-graham-day-3reeeee/weirdstokoe/

If that wasn’t awesome enough for you then, well, I don’t know what to say. I enjoy how the layout really contibutes to the flow of the book. A great deal of thought goes into the compression of the “little people” panels which then gives the monsters room to really occupy the space.

    SHADOW #5

    “An old name…”

Man, I really enjoy this on a visceral level. Seeing The Shadow just outclass everybody in the room reminds me of the inevitability of Ennis’ Frank Castle. Issue one and two of all those MAX arcs would just stack the deck against the Punisher in such amazing ways but the whole time you’re just thinking, “Wait for it…wait for it…”

    WONDER WOMAN #0

I thought Azzarello did a nice job bringing a very straight face to this. And, maybe I’m slipping (only read it once) but either I missed the pun or he didn’t have one this ish. Actually starting to bug me now…hrmmm. Any help?

    THIS WEEK!

    BATMAN INCORPORATED #0
    Bwhaa?

BPRD HELL ON EARTH RETURN O/T MASTER #2 (OF 5)
    Yeeeees.

    HAPPY #1 (OF 4)
“Wouldn’t you like to get awaaaaay…”

    INVINCIBLE #95
Kirkman, Ottley, and Walker continue to push this thing to the limit. Loving it.

    PROPHET #29
Terror strikes my heart as Prophet single issue sales hover around 6,000 copies. Please, beat the drum people.

    MEMORIAL HC VOL 01
    Is this everything?

  3. AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #694–Alpha is the Jar-Jar Binks of comics. I know he’s supposed to be annoying, but Slott has succeeded a little too well, you know? He needs to find his way to the exit in very short order.

BATMAN INCORPORATED #0–Interested to see how, or if, Morrison uses this issue to show the way Batman Inc. fits into the Nu52.

FF #22–Bentley is my favorite of the Future Foundation. This should be a fine issue.

HAPPY #1 (OF 4)–Hmm. The description sounds sort of like an Ed Brubaker comic, but written by Grant Morrison? Trying to wrap my mind around this. I will definitely pick up this first issue, at least.

SIMPSONS TREEHOUSE OF HORROR #18–Usually amusing, will thumb through and likely pick up

  4. HAPPY! because every Morrison #1 is worth a shot.

BATMAN INC. #0 because every Morrison #0 is worth a shot.

  5. Last Week: Began life as a freelancer – I still wouldn’t work on Before Watchmen. Didn’t get to read enough comics. Judas Coin looked good, but Alien was better. Punk Rock Jesus was sweet. Godzilla by Stokoe tingled my balls. The Treatment, on the Madefire Comics App, is a pretty good violent comic.

    This week:
AQUAMAN #0 – Because there’s something wrong with me.

BATMAN INCORPORATED #0 – A smart friend of mine mentioned in an email that these #0’s have been a disaster, and I’m inclined to agree. This is the last hope for a good issue to come out of it.
(maybe one of the #0’s I own but haven’t read yet is good, but I dunno. The covers just make me feel apathetic.)

DEBRIS #3 (OF 4) – Sure, why not. It’s purty enough that I can almost forget Wild Children.

HAPPY #1 (OF 4) – Imagine if this was as good as we secretly hope for? I heard it read like a Millar satire rather than Brubaker. Supergods was pretty good self- satire, so I think he’s clear to take a shot at Millar, and am glad to see he’s almost moved on from Moore. Almost.

INCREDIBLE HULK #14 – It reads like Bob Haney channelling Ellis. This is a book worth reading for fun.

MIND MGMT #5 – I still need to read #4!

MIND THE GAP #5 – I still need to read #2-4! Damn standing order. This book looks like Morning Glories, so I’m treating it that way – storing to read in chunks… but I really need to make sure I really do like it.

NEW DEADWARDIANS #7 (OF 8) – Playa got laid last ish. There was a cock in panel and everything. Anything can happen in the last days of Vertgo!

PROPHET #29 – Last ish, Giannis Milonogiannis’ art impressed me so much, I bought his ‘Old City Blues’ comic on comixology. In a sale. It was cool – like Punk Rock Jesus, you could feel the artist just letting loose on the page. Who the fuck knows who is drawing this issue – it’ll be balls crazy regardless.

SKULLKICKERS #18 – I’m a little too keen to see where the cliffhanger was going for a fill-in issue, but this will probably be a lark.

SUPER DINOSAUR #14 – Brought to you by The Walking Dead.

SUPERMAN #0 – Kenneth Rocafort back on Superman? I’m in. I’ve still not read that Redhood And The Outlaws issue I bought after he left. It’s so ugly! Why isn’t anyone else nuts about this guy?

SUPERMAN FAMILY ADVENTURES #5 – It’d be less weird if I had kids, but I buy it anyway. It’s probably the best Superman book coming out right now.

    THE SPIDER #5 – It ain’t shit.

X-TREME X-MEN #4 – It is shit. But I’ll give it one more out of stubbornness.

MILKMAN MURDERS HC – I’ve not head a word about this other than house ads, but Casey is a laugh.

NEAR DEATH TP VOL 02 – This series ended at # 11. Never once did it appear on this list. It was one of my fave books of the past two years.

  6. COMICS THEN!

Haven’t read all of my haul, but found BATWOMAN #0 and DAREDEVIL #18 to be very good, and I was really surprised (in a good way) by JUSTICE LEAGUE #0, which was grand fun in a way not suggested by the pervy looking cover. STAR TREK #13 was pretty ‘eh’ albeit with some nice shout outs to older TOS fans, and WONDER WOMAN #0 was an unexpected buy. I loved the SHADOW #5 for EXACTLY the same reason J_Smitty_ did, and I thought SUPERGIRL #0 and YOUNG JUSTICE #20 were both outstanding books.

    COMICS NOW!

ALL STAR WESTERN #0 – last issue of Jonah was the best yet.

AMERICAN VAMPIRE #31 – Hollywoodland makes for a nice backdrop.

BEFORE WATCHMEN OZYMANDIAS #3 – Jae Lee is killing this.

HAPPY #1 – will this read the same after MozCon?

I VAMPIRE #0 – remember when I said I was dropping this? Well, #12 reversed that by being fantastic, so I’m back for more.

JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK #0 – Lemire is moving things along nicely, and the art is alway bleedingly gorgeous. I do have some trepidation over what awaits Constantine and his shared ‘secret’ with Zatanna. That said, I did appreciate the shout out to Alan Moore’s Swampy #50 last issue.

KEVIN SMITH BIONIC MAN #13 – already ordered for Bionic Bigfoot. But that last issue was CRAP and I resent having wasted $4 on it.

MARS ATTACKS #4 – a fun enough comic, but I’m probably not here for the long haul.

MIND MGMT #5 – still not caught up.

MIND THE GAP #5 – ditto.

NATIONAL COMICS ROSE AND THORN #1 – I enjoyed Eternity and Looker more than expected, so giving this a shot too.

NEW DEADWARDIANS #7 – yeah, really going to miss this one. Very nicely done at all levels.

PHANTOM LADY #2 – a pretty good first issue, with some trademark moments of Gray/Palmiotti fun.

PROPHET #29 – always. And yeah, 6k is scary.

PUNISHER #16 – last issue. Farewell Mr Rucka, you will be missed.

WINTER SOLDIER #11 – crikey, is this a daily yet? Ballerina Natasha has been awesome though.

and thanks to Thelonius_Nick for pointing out SIMPSONS TREEHOUSE OF HORROR #18, I had missed ordering that so will be looking for it.

8 DC; 3 image; 2 Dynamite, 1 Dark Horse and two Marvels, but those are for books where the company is tossing the creator off it.

No trades this month, as I had really hoped to see the Gerber Man Thing book here. Oh well, a la prochaine.

Comics! Its a tricky business, even for well-known fraudsters!

  7. I really enjoy reading the mini-reviews from everyone who posts in this column. I feel they give a much more realistic view at what’s working and not working than most of the other reviews out there.

Ben Lipman: Best of luck to you! It’s a tough, but rewarding, road.

  8. Happy #1: Wasnt as bad as Graeme said it would be, but wasnt that great either. Yeah sure I can see what people are saying by it being a Mark Millar parody in part/whatever but truth is I didnt really enjoy it. Some of the colouring in the middle was kinda nice though. Im not saying it wont pick up in later issue, but I dont think I’ll be getting the next one.
